main power brokers in syria's war lay out a vision for the future of the country but it's short on details. indonesia's national oil company takes the blame for a huge oil spill and file borneo. and marking fifty years since the assassination of martin luther king we look at his legacy. the growing spot between china and the u.s. over trade tariffs is playing havoc on american markets stocks on wall street took a tumble on the opening dropping by more than four hundred points the selloff was triggered by china's announcement that it will tax fifty billion dollars worth of u.s. goods let's go live now to gabriel elizondo who's in new york tell us more about what's been driving the markets and why they've been so volatile today. yes one economist put it he says this seems to be the opening salvos in what could

be a big trade war between the world's two biggest economies the united states and china there's a lot of worry here on wall street wall street does not like uncertainty and that's certainly what they're seeing there's many factors that are affecting this define the markets but it's certainly clearly the anticipation is based on a potential trade war let's look at the dow it's about twenty three thousand right now and numbers mean nothing without perspective the dow was under twenty thousand when donald trump took office at its peak it reached over twenty six thousand it's dropped about three thousand about twenty three thousand so it's still higher than it was when trump took office but they've seen the sharp drop. in the last several weeks and months really it's really this opening trade war that we're starting to see now that's causing this let's remember that trump in imposed three billion in tariffs on steel and aluminum around the world then followed that up with twenty

five percent tariff proposals on fifty billion dollars on chinese imports and then of course on wednesday china retaliate ng in a big way hitting back responding in kind announcing twenty five percent tariffs on fifty billion dollars on american imports these could in effect major companies that exchange on the stock exchange including boeing among others all of this leads to wall street basically very nervous and that's why you're seeing these sharp declines in the market it's important to note that right now from the u.s. perspective these are posed to tariffs that it has to go through a public hearing and then if it passes and goes beyond that these tariffs could go into effect as early as middle may so we'll have to be watching this over the coming weeks there's still potentially time for both sides to negotiate and back out of this. but right now wall street's considering that this could go forward and
7:04 pm
it could have ramifications not only for the u.s. and chinese economies but for the global economy and that is the fear in these markets right now isn't it with president trump showing no signs of backing down on certainty around the goshi ations how much of a threat is a deterioration in the u.s. china relationship to the global economy. yeah people are worried again because these are the two biggest economies in the world six hundred fifty billion dollars is traded just between the u.s. and china so there's a lot at stake there the roughly fifty billion dollars in tariffs that were announced by each side that in of itself will not bring down the global economy most analysts say but it's a foreshadowing to potentially more tariffs that could and that's really the real potential problem here and a lot of people are saying that this affects many big companies on the your new york stock exchange and that's why so many people are worried right now let's

remember trump promised that he would do this during the campaign so a lot of his advisors are saying he's just basically doing what he's been promising all along of course trump has said that that that china simply does not trade fairly on the open market and that u.s. companies can't compete and so he's trying to level these tariffs to bring them back to the negotiating table all right thanks very much gabriel elizondo with the market reaction to that story well meanwhile more and more people in china are calling for a complete oil costs for american products as tensions rise over the trade conflict adrian brown has the view from beijing. it's food since china began to open its economy to the world be encouraged ironically by the united states as a result their brands revealing the first to benefit now chinese government officials awarding the full decades of cooperation is being recklessly endangered

even if the venture goes sour we have a problem with china that's what president trump means when he accuses china of stealing intellectual property and he doesn't have to sign off on the latest terrorists for sixty days that leaves time for negotiation but not much adrian brown al-jazeera beijing. iran turkey and russia have promised a what together to ensure a last thing ceasefire in syria speaking at a summit in ankara iran's leader hassan rouhani blamed the u.s. for backing eisel fighters in syria you also called on all policies to respect syria's independence and territorial integrity that his president said this could only happen if it distance itself from what it called terrorist groups. what other will earn. as a guarantor country it's important to attain the territorial integrity of syria
7:09 pm
these fights have to be ended in the country has to be rebuilt on this we are in agreement the syrian public the civilians of those who are losing as a result of these fights there is a difficult process ahead of us but the light at the end of this tunnel is getting brighter we will not allow the face of syria to be darkened by terrorist organizations yet tad as. we stressed the territorial integrity of syria the sovereignty of syria and the unity of syria the independence of syria should be set as a very high priority on this is what the people of syria want. as i'm now joined in the studio by a senior political analyst marwan bashar and so we have two leading back as of president bashar al assad meeting with what has been perhaps up until now one of his leading opponents turkey why are they having this summit now of course i want categorize. the turkish president a supporter of bashar assad an opponent yes
7:10 pm
a point to just focus what we have now at this point in time is three parties that have problems with the united states indeed with the west. turkey has called peace with the united states and the rest of the europe. iran has major hostilities with the united states and bit of europe and of course russia is somewhere in between so what they have in common is that the three of them are heavily involved in syria the three of them could be involved for a long term in syria and the three of them have issues with the trump presidency or with the united states policy in syria and i think here i mean you have to give them some sort of a credit in terms of diplomacy in the end of the day is not about people agreeing diplomacy is about managing disagreements and i. i think we've seen these three leaders acting a statesman meaning while they will talk about the humanitarians and they talk
7:11 pm
about peace one of the symptoms bombarding and fighting in syria they still find it in themselves to be meeting and summits in order to advance their interests are a goodly not the syrian interests but they claim that they're also advancing the cause of syria and with u.s. involvement we've had comments from trump calling for an immediate withdrawal the u.s. doesn't want any sustained they don't want to stay in syria but they don't seem to be ready to pull out completely either. this is what you call president from prophetic to candidate trump you know he's always feel comfy is more comfortable campaigning so good in the campaign he said what the heck are we doing in syria we need to get out of syria. clearly the entire establishment in washington including his three senior national security advisers mattis and defense and bolton national security adviser as well as pompei with the secretary of state all
7:12 pm
three of them do not want to leave syria to iran or to russia certainly israel and its allies in the united states do not want to see trump leave and clearly from what we've heard from from saudi arabia doesn't want to leave syria so while he himself wants to leave everyone else seems to be pushing him to stay that is the ultimate is a convoluted statement from the white house saying well we are kind of finishing the job in syria but we would stay longer and we would consult with the olives and said then briefly marwan does that mean that iran might be closer of tuckey wants to contain the y.p. g. which has been the america's main supporter and then america's main aim in staying involved is to reach east iranian influence absolutely reducing iranian influence is the most important thing for the united states they're hoping russia would do it but it's not doing it but to be honest with you in miami i've never seen a situation where one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter i mean this
7:13 pm
is a situation where everyone seems to be blaming everyone else's client to be a terrorists the y.p. g s firestick is going to is a terrorist for the united states its freedom fighters hezbollah for the united states is terrorist for iran is a freedom fighter and go figure. on not hearing much more on a still to come for you a war of words between russia and the u.k. over the nerve agent attack is heating up we'll have that story also thousands of athletes nineteen different sports representing some two hundred billion people will have the latest from the commonwealth games and australia. well we're barely into april barely into spring really but the heavy rains to start
