killed as the israeli army continues to fire live ammunition and tear gas at protesters at least seven hundred eighty palestinians have been injured with seven said to be in a critical condition it's a week since demonstrations first began to mark palestine's annual land day an act of resistance against israeli occupation and land seizures charlotte reports. palestinian words meet israeli bullets in gaza. from behind the border fence israeli snipers have palestinians on these sites they shooting a guest in life fire and rubber bullets. but still reeling from the bloodiest day in years this was the area where last friday israeli snipers shot seven hundred palestinians twenty one would die. a week later they're back with a smokescreen and stretches the casualty numbers quickly climb. injuries turn to
7:03 pm
fate tell us what's going to the stars they are seeing we're not bringing them for war anything we brought them to protect ourselves from israeli snipers. last friday's killings happened on what the palestinians called lend it's an annual protest an act of resistance to israeli occupation and the seizure of land for illegal jewish settlements. this year israel warned that opened fire if anyone approached the border fence and then they followed through. fourteen hundred people were injured many shot by more than one hundred israeli snipers some in the back as they ran away another is he price given the large number of injuries and deaths the ominous statements made by israeli authorities in the days leading up to the protest as well as indications that the individuals killed or wounded were unarmed or did not pose a serious threat to well protected security forces and in some cases were actually
7:04 pm
running away from the green line fence there are strong indications that security forces used excessive force. israel has ruled out any investigation by the united nations over the european union and to disproportionate use of force it blames him us for inciting its people is a travesty for the palestinian people that the hamas government is encouraging its people to attack israel is encouraging its people to commit acts of violence and encouraging them to actually storm into israel to try to destroy israel and kill as many people as possible palestinians will camp here until the fifteenth of may the day israel was created seventy years ago others will continue to press on the border taunting israel security forces and remembering what the lost loved ones and land they hold mirrors to blind the snipers hoping the world can see as they reflects the violence shot at dallas al-jazeera. joins us now from
7:05 pm
inside gaza had a can you describe what's happening there at the moment. well it is reaching the end of the a lot of that at least the families that were here are leaving this this encampment now still you can see at the border down there where you see the ambulances are they are still the young protesters they have been throughout the day trying to get as close as they can to the phones but they haven't been able to because israel's retaliation was pretty swift barrage of tear gas fired from across but also drones dropping canisters from above and also there's been several cases of people getting hurt by live ammunition now the latest figure we got from their health ministry as you mentioned earlier seven hundred eighty wounded in children of which two hundred by live ammunition it is not as high as last week but
7:06 pm
certainly a very high. and we know that these very minute train has said it's determined to prevent people getting too close to the fence the protesters that must be aware of the risks involved in doing this. they are and i asked over and over again why are you going there you've seen what happened last week i mean the bullets used by these really high velocity bullets we were in the hospital a few days ago and they actually they it's not just the wounded they mainly at people nevertheless the many young people said we have nothing to lose at this stage one young man was telling me i am sixteen i finished school i dropped out of school because simply it was a point for me to study there is nothing for me there is frustration that is anger not only had the blockade by egypt and israel but also at their own political
7:07 pm
leadership at the fact that nothing is getting better people here young people did majority of those who are down there teenagers or in their early twenty's have only known war since they were born has only known hardship and they see no end in sight so many will tell you and it's quite shocking to hear especially when you're looking at the face of that person and he's so young that they have nothing to lose at this stage they will keep on getting the taking of the grievances right judy headphones for everyone to see obviously many of them are quite i would say ambitious day say that at some point they will be able to cross that says and you have to bear in mind that all of them are descendants of refugees so all of them have an original home town across the fence. thanks very much how do i mean bring us the latest on what's happening there in side gaza we're now joined by beilin
7:08 pm
a former israeli minister of justice he joins me live from tel aviv thank you very much for speaking to us was the israeli military justified then in using live fire against unarmed civilians. well the question of whether or not it is excessive use of power. and i must admit that most of the israelis. you know it is a palestinian provoke. having the programs we would go on. with but a studio authority they're all coming close to the to the fence are still we actually we drew from gaza destroyed all the settlements a true that we are still having some a limb and so for a ruling through the sky and the sea but this is not
7:09 pm
a reason. to have these demonstrations against us especially when they ask so all what at judy these young people who are really suffering we all admit the suffering in the small street because so densely populated but what do they really want to form us if they want peace if they want negotiations well we are with you claire question mine is i suppose at the moment they just want to be able to have the right to demonstrate peacefully that's what they're asking for right now and you know the pictures that we were seeing mr beilin are just that behind our correspondent it they what they want soldiers or activists so much as women and children and families who gathered it's not the first time that live fire was used on a protest as many more died earlier on in the week does there need to be an inquiry . so first of all the girl should be at least an
7:10 pm
internal inquiry and my policy merits is the amending but i cannot tell you that this is the general view we are in of my in the minority in this demand because it is very difficult for most of the israelis to understand what do they really want from us now the point is that one has to be very very wise he smiled hill and clever and i see that the law at the level of consultation is much lower then a week ago and i presume also that it is not only because of the palestinians but also because of the israeli army which is more kill for than last time and that is of course a little bit better but if you ask me what should be the bottom line it is the following one if the palestinian leadership is not ready to recognize us all to
7:11 pm
negotiate with us at least we should have with them and. with them for a few years in which there will be no exchange of fire and that they will be able to develop their own needs our help which is much better than the current situation see us into a very modest this is not my dream my dream is that gaza would be part of the palestinian state eventually but it is it doesn't seem like something which will happen tomorrow. is the least kind of a solution and the solution is what we need to thank you for sharing your thoughts your perspective with us mr beilin joining us there from tel aviv. united states has impose new sanctions against russian businessmen companies and
7:12 pm
government officials including associates of president vladimir putin the sanctions target seven russian oligarchs and the twelve companies they control as well as seventeen senior russian government officials washington is saying that it's targeting russia's malign activities which include alleged meddling in the two thousand and sixteen presidential election. correspondent kimberly hulk it is live for us now washington what more do we know about the sanctions that are being imposed and of those that are being targeted here. well i think what we can take from these sanctions maryam is the fact that these ones are particularly personal for vladimir putin is seems that they have been designed to send that message they are targeting those that are really key allies of putin including one of his personal friends and even a former son in law in regards to his personal friend his name is oleg deripaska he's the billionaire founder of
7:13 pm
a group that operates siberian power plants but you remember also to his name from last year when it made headlines for being potentially tied to paul matter for trump's former presidential campaign chair so that is certainly notable and again the former son in law of lattimer putin now all of this is something that has been encouraged by the u.s. congress. donald trump was given this power by the congress last summer but didn't start to take action under this law that he reluctantly side until last month that we are getting some congressional reaction from this both democrats republicans applauding this action that has finally been taken in fact the republican senator marco rubio saying that these sanctions really are designed to send a clear message to putin that the illegal occupation of ukraine support for assad's regime in terms of war crimes efforts to undermine western democracies and militias cyber attacks will continue to result in severe consequences so it seems that very much these are designed to send a message to putin the russian president personally all right thanks very much can
7:14 pm
really help in washington turning then to all the developments the former russian spy at the center of a diplomatic row between the u.k. and rusher is no longer in a critical condition doctors say sergey script holds health is improving a month after he and his daughter will poisoned with a nerve agent in southern england britain blamed russia for the attack but continues to deny any involvement meanwhile the u.k. foreign office has confirmed scruples niece has been denied a visa to come to britain she was planning to take her daughter you back to russia . still to come for you on the program counter nine years from me to participate the monster is freed on bail after german prosecutors ordered his immediate release from prison. and residents out of the philippine terrorist island shut down fed cleaning suggest the government may have ulterior motives.
7:15 pm
however we've got some slightly dry weather coming into central and southern parts of china now sees a rather big downpours recently just around chengdu sliding further south which will see a little more cloud coming into hong kong quite breezy day there on sas day key northeasterly wind temperatures around twenty three degrees celsius woman weather as we go on into sunday the winds falling lights and we should see very pleasant weekend in store that's a hong kong getting up to around twenty five degrees much of central and southern china looking fine dry and sunny also dry weather to across a good part of south asia we have got some live the showers just cropping up into india so they see some warnings on the indian met department here i mean possibility of seeing some big down poles in places maybe underneath one to two of these shower heads pushing up towards the northeastern quarter still pretty warm
7:16 pm

7:17 pm
welcome back let's recap the top stories for you this hour five people have been killed and hundreds injured after israeli security forces fired live ammunition at palestinians protesting near the gaza border. the united nations human rights office has warned israel against using lethal force saying that it violates international law. and our other top story the u.s. has announced new sanctions against russian businessmen companies and government officials close to president let him in. at will for more on this story now
7:18 pm
the protests in gaza are our top story today al-jazeera is senior political analyst marwan bashara a marwan how how significant are these protests in terms of the way they came about and the way in which palestinians are choosing to express themselves here i think it's quite significant for a number of reasons one they are part of a long series of all protests in various kinds over the last several decades of peace since one thousand nine hundred sixty seven when the gaza strip the west bank of these jews there were all compiled by israel so the palestinians have seen a number of. means of protests some of them were armed some of their were very violent some of them were in fact acts of terror and a lot of the most of them where acts of civil disobedience or peaceful protests like what we've seen today and i think it's shows a certain maturity on the part of the palestinians to be embracing such peaceful means such creative means because really last friday they were almost bikini king
7:19 pm
on these very borders erecting tents and chanting and singing and so on so forth if that annoys israel and of that brings the attention of the international community i think that's a probably of rebellion and i'm just looking at some of these pictures now i suppose the question many people are asking is whether or not they will stay this way to take if there's an essential factional body that organize the demonstrations could it possibly morph into something else most probably especially that the israelis are already moving in to various parts of the west bank preempting activists in other palestinian areas from joining the. palestinian brothers and sisters in gaza look as long as the causes continue to exist i think the palestinians will continue to resist and your earlier guests your civilian who is an israeli left its peace is loving apparently israeli a part of the peace camp
7:20 pm
a source of war was asking almost torturously the same question again again so what do they want from us i think it's kind of interesting not to see astounding that a former politician like yossi beilin would really insist on this question of course is not expecting you to answer that but yet he insists on what do they want from us now. after several decades of occupation for an israeli former politician peacenik to say what do they want from us i think it's amazing what i'll answer mr bell it i think the palestinian want justice i think the palestinians want freedom i think people in gaza want freedom from drones they want freedom from shelling they want freedom from want bargaining they want freedom from blockade they want justice they don't want crumbs from the israeli table they want to be able to share their historic land palestine with the israelis on equal footing all right thank

wait many more years to get a verdict no matter what that verdict is catherine. for macand i need a car as vigilantes calling for dialogue with the spanish government following his release on bail from a prison in germany who was detained last week after crossing the border from denmark spain is seeking his extradition on charges related to his role in catalonia as illegal independence referendum last year german judges have ruled can't be extradited for charges ever badly and could be on the grounds of misuse of public funds dominic cain has more from outside the prison in germany. colors pushed the most surprised everyone by taking a considerable time to actually obtain his freedom to walk out to address the waiting media we would be led to believe it would be at some point early in the morning after he would have posted the bail of seventy five thousand euros and agreed to meet the stringent conditions that would be placed on the his release

from incarceration here at the prison in. finally once he had complete complied with all the formalities and did emerge from the prison doors and when he did so the message he could he came across to the media with was one of the need for dialogue to resolve this situation. the time for dialogue has arrived we are demanding that daily from the last that she hears and we only received a violent representative response now seeing the form of that response it's time to do politics so carlos has managed to get himself released from the confines of this prison hartstein where he spent much of the past two weeks since his arrest he says now is the time for political dialogue to try to resolve the crisis and indeed the german government has sent that there needs to be a regional government created in catalonia to help resolve the crisis but for the
