forests on the shelves at a little further east was to buy castle shannon jamaica kingston at thirty one degrees may well we got some very very lively showers making the way across southern parts of the u.s. over the next couple of days with the possibility of tornadoes. the weather sponsored by cats on race. stories of life. and inspiration. as series of show documentaries from around the wilds. that celebrate the human spirit. against the odds with. al-jazeera selects hunted.
4:01 pm
this is al jazeera. hello i'm so raman welcome to the al-jazeera news our life my headquarters here in doha coming up in the next sixty minutes more mixed signals from the u.s. about whether it will launch military action against syria's government. also thousands of palestinians gather for a third straight friday of protests after violence that's left more than thirty people dead. also long before someone attacks cripple and his daughter with a nerve agent britain says russia's intelligence services were spying on the expiry . tatiana sanchez with the support the semifinals of the european champions league have been that liverpool will take on a very mad and buying munich oh wait two time defending champions around madrid
4:02 pm
more on that coming up. good to have you company on the news are we begin with syria as tension between the united states and russia continues over washington's threat of missile strikes france and turkey's leaders have spoken with president vladimir putin and are calling for dialogue with law now the united nations security council is that to hold an open door meeting after russia called on member states for a session russia's foreign minister says moscow has proof that the suspected chemical attack in duma last weekend was fabricated. so i would advise the us to wait for results because the old b c w commission and the pressure from. russia and the syrian government has left for sirius that they will be in duma what are specialists couldn't find any chemical weapons chlorine or whatever being used
4:03 pm
we have irrefutable evidence that it was another staged event at the hands of security services of a state which is very eager to be on the frontlines of the russia phobic campaign or syria's government has allowed an international chemicals watchdog team to investigate the alleged gas attack in the former rebel held town but there are mixed signals in washington over possible missile strikes while president donald trump senate harder is our correspondent for us in beirut and of course there are many moving parts to the story but the focus really is on duma now and the sort of chemical experts that are in there to investigate whether this chemical attack did happen. yes the organization for the prohibition of chemical weapons their team will be heading to tomorrow saturday the fact finding mission is set to begin tomorrow course being the town where that suspected chemical weapons attack happened they're going to be inspecting the site carrying out investigations and
4:04 pm
issuing their findings but some questions are being asked on whether or not they will be successful because there are some reports that you know the evidence could be tampered with there is a new authority on the ground when the attack happened the rebels were in control of duma and now there's a new authority the russians as well as the syrian government so questions are being raised now the another question is this organization its mandate is only to determine whether or not a chemical weapons attack happened they do not have a mandate to apportion any blame so will that be enough to stave off the possibility of military strikes against the syrian government or is president trump waiting for the outcome of this fact finding mission before deciding what to do in syria so this fact finding mission expected to begin its work tomorrow. in the stories the diplomacy the. diplomats talk. behind the scenes. well definitely the tension has eased the
4:05 pm
rhetoric has changed statements made by world leaders are changing we heard trump two days ago say the mist houser coming and now he's saying i never said when an attack will take place but it's not just him the french president just a short while ago calling for stepped up consultations and dialogue with the russian government just a few days ago was promising a harsh response saying that a chemical weapons attack is a red line but it's not just the french and american presidents we heard from the turkish president or the gone we know that turkey is playing a role in mediating role trying to bring the two sides together talking to both the united states and russia trying to diffuse the crisis or to go on saying that contacts are. continuing he's also saying that the atmosphere is much better and there's a possibility that tensions will ease a lot is at stake there is a possibility of a direct confrontation between the u.s. and russia and that is why you know we're seeing the stepped up diplomatic efforts to find a way out of this crisis for them is only will leave come back to you as a situation develops thank you. staying in the region thousands of palestinians are
4:06 pm
out for a third friday of protests along the gaza israel border fence several people have already been injured by israeli fire at the border demonstrations not palestinians could be seen hurling stones towards the border and lighting tires on fire and even pulling out the barbed wire fence calling this friday's protest flag burning day more than thirty palestinians have been shot and killed by the israelis in past demonstrations sorry force it is monitoring events force of the guards at israel border a great deal of activity on friday. there has been there's been as you say this flag burning protest where they burned the israeli flag they've been posting a huge palestinian flag they have burned tires to offer some kind of screening from israeli snipers as they've been trying to take away at least a section of a secondary fence that israel has installed some three hundred meters inside gaza
4:07 pm
and territory we just saw a big group of young palestinian men and boys dragging away a section of that fence just the last few minutes but so far the numbers of injured are much down on the previous two weeks at the most recent official figures we have although they may well be slightly behind the latest developments are one hundred twelve across the whole of the border area and about fifteen injured by live fire now when you put that in the context of hundreds of injured some sixteen hundred according to the gazan health ministry injured by live fire during the last two protests that does seem a big change with me here is dr assad i was shot who is the international media spokesman for the great march of return protests those numbers are very different from what happened the last couple of weeks and so what is going on is that protest is behavior change israeli soldiers behavior changed what do you think and i think even this a number which is there one hundred and twelve engineers today this is a big number of course simply because the part of the us that not use any kind of.
4:08 pm
violence they are coming just with their naked chest their bare hands and just they are coming just to protest and to send a message to the whole world a nonviolent message peaceful message get the israelis the within two to read such a message to the world and they still the u.s. live police and the use tear gas and the use all sorts of puts in order to. intimidate cnn's yet the policy that i quite determined to continue this protest in order to make the whole world wake up and to rise up to their responsibilities toward the right of return of the proceedings and to implement our right of return as mr pretty tonight the resolution one hundred forty resolution three two three six a resolution two three three four zero that is usually adopted by international community this is a message to the international community why do you. not criticize israel why you don't force israel to implement the united nations resolution taken by
4:09 pm
international community or as though you force other nations to do so is this a double standard on their part we ask them not to use double standard pussy and to it treat the procedure people as any other nation and to allow them to have their own right to return to just to break in on the international community an honest reaction to the life against unarmed protesters especially which there has been a lot of criticism of given the lower numbers now do you think that the israeli military despite what its been saying about not changing its policies do you think they have succumbed when you got pressure i think there is some pressure even from within the israelis and i remind you of. your island statement yesterday when he said that the israeli is the army is not the most immoral if you kill our men in their word because they killed journalists morteza and the previously. that tom hundred zero is a british and then they killed. a quarter which is american they were. peace
4:10 pm
campaigners with about athena did they did so in this case there is a lot of criticism within from within a human rights organization is that there's a veil between him and others from the human rights watch from international community care from all over the word because of this aggressive nature the criminal nature of that isn't really patient forces which they kill indiscriminately especially their title kill and to prevent commitment from transmitting this image to the where ok dr shah thank you very much for joining us so that is the situation here with this protest has been going on for several hours we haven't seen the same kind of violence that we have over the last couple weeks from the israeli side in terms of of live fire injuries of course we don't yet know how things will turn out during the rest of the day the message from the protesters remains the same that they want to send this message of peaceful protest and the
4:11 pm
right of return of palestinian refugees the israeli foreign ministry is issued a statement saying that these protests are in fact a cover for hamas attempts to instigate violent confrontation and indeed sabotage what it calls the security fence of course we'll continue to monitor events with you harry and come back to you if that situation changes thank you very for sit there in gaza let's join al-jazeera senior political analyst mara bashara joins me now from our london studio marwan we've seen the israelis target unarmed civil society unarmed journalists and stone throwing demonstrators some carrying throwing stones and some not and in the past few days we've also seen the israelis target specific hamas officials as well within the region is israel trying to provoke hamas into this conflict if we call it that on the border in a more clear a fashion so they can actually they have a much more overt you might say enemy to blame.
4:12 pm
that's a great question so i think it goes to the heart of what has gone on for at least twenty five years this room finds it difficult to deal with peaceful protests it finds it difficult to challenge civil society on the palestinian side it finds it even more challenging to challenge international law and especially when we had this guest from gaza you know israel turned the palestinians into united nations resolutions repeating creatures in magic someone sits in gaza just to preach to you nonstop various you and security council resolutions i think all of that is problematic for israel because israel then cannot justify why it continues to occupy palestinian lions why the security arguments is nonsensical after twenty five years of peace process and why when the palestinians simply want to burn an israeli flag and erect
4:13 pm
a palestinian flag when they burn tires that that in the end by itself constitutes a threat for israel so much so that the israelis so-called defense minister would charge a palestinian journalist of being a captain with hamas imagine if palestinian journalists who worked for the chinese opposition artist they wear way in making certain pictures and photography as a photographer in gaza becomes a target for it is very like hundreds or thousands of palestinians but in this case shot dead considered a security threat what is there so really it's become so nonsensical that israel simply can no longer justify what it does and or why it continues to occupy palestinian land but of course mona as you were listening in to her in our guest i mean even the guest there was saying that he thinks israel has been influenced by the international criticism of the way it's handled the situation if this had. all
4:14 pm
the time we have a very forceful approach by israel which leads to deaths and then they back off and wait to see what's going to happen next and one wonders what is going to happen next while the protesters say they're going to stay there until may the fourteenth fifteenth. i think point in time any regrets if there are any on the israeli side or any. reconsideration if you will of the policy that has led to the to the death of tens to the injuries of over a thousand and by the way the injuries of over a thousand and i checked with a few experts medical experts in the case a lot of them were shot in the back of the leg on the on the nice side in order to cripple in order to paralyze for a long time and these are young people being shot imagine that you have a neighbor called this that targets
4:15 pm
a whole young generation in order to cripple it to decapitate it four for four from making for that activity and all of that is by the way is is managed is led by a personality a character that is everyone recognized to be a neo fascist i recently grant to israel imagine that the palestinians are being employed suppressed by a defense minister who is a mode dove and for god's sake i mean you know the middle east and the palestinians and the syrians have been already calling allies by french and british and spanish and and you know americans than and so on so forth but i'm old though then foreign minister the foreign minister to come defense minister that is calling the palestinian terrorists that wanted to bomb the us one done in egypt this is the kind of product that is leading the onslaught of the israeli onslaught against the palestinians so really for the palestinian it's
4:16 pm
a major tragedy that they can't even burn flags they can't even picnic so they call it a fence and they want to defend it but that fence is violated every day by israel just the last few days israel you know flew its do its air for its aircraft itself fighter jets and bombed the palestinian targets so why is it ok for israel to continue to violate the fence but it's not even ok for palestinian youth. to approach the fence well we should see what does up certainly in the coming hours the moment now and thanks for joining us from london let's head to africa now where a report by the united nations children's agency says the armed group boko haram has abducted more than one thousand children in northeastern nigeria since twenty thirteen now many of the children were taken from schools like the chibok girls school in twenty fourteen more than one hundred of those two hundred seventy six girls are still missing unicef says nearly two thousand three hundred teachers have
4:17 pm
been killed and fourteen hundred schools destroyed by the armed group and the dress has more now from the capital of joins me the report actually leads to grim reading what more detail did it have to tell us well basically the report is only talking about events that happened between two thousand and thirteen to two thousand and eight and that a period of five years but we've known even before now that several school children have been taken or abducted by boko haram long before the chibok girls were taken in two thousand and fourteen that approx you encounter got other parts of the state where we've seen invading and taking hostages or abducting especially girls from the schools and even before then inside made a group. for quote i was still inside maybe agree parents complain that
4:18 pm
walk into there. are probably something like ten fifteen dollars at big their daughters and they say and they tell them that these are dollars for your children and we have the right to claim them or take them away now you're talking about. the devastation suffered by a book where i'm in terms of physical structures we see but the psychological impact of all these is long lasting for the many ways that there were hours of course come back to you with more later in the program thank you. still ahead here on the al-jazeera news china's president watches his navy put on a show of force that hotly contested waters. and i'm now going where laying out is the beginning of this year end of the evil of the democratic republic of congo by the way. to get away from winding will be

4:21 pm
a political analyst joins me now from pakistan's capital islamabad good to have you with us live. well it's been very clear what the courts think of mr sharif his future house in terms of his political life but the law stones in pakistan right now he appealed to anything to overturn this decision. when thank you so much as you said. that is there is any option of. their former prime minister begin to appear you can make again appeal file if you will before the supreme court of pakistan nor know all options are over. and here is to accept that is to you know if the court and whatever the verdict and by the epics court of pakistan supreme court of pakistan the supreme court of pakistan has declared him this was a fight you saw because this game in this petition
4:22 pm
filed before the supreme court of pakistan asking the board to enter very that this disqualification is. natured no decision has been announced by the court there this despite a vacation is it cannot be jetting because this soon bear the bench richard layard disqualified former prime minister has now declared him disqualified for life ok in terms of his political legacy for the moment he's been a domineering political character for decades in the country in and out of office dealing with military coups and military takeovers how would you assess his influence on pakistani politics as we lead really very closely to another general election. definitely the verdict will have far reaching implications for our. former prime
4:23 pm
minister but as his influence is concerned definitely he has been disqualified to contest for the parliament but he has not been disqualified to make a public campaign to reach out to people so he will continue to have a strong influence not only over his party but in the domestic politics that is definitely so far. has come from his party progs on with some big numbers but there are several options that are being considered by this and of our chief and his party and these options have not been announced. by court off the elections the party can adopt more stuff being more tough going and then it again that you do see but one point will be very clear that this judgement by the supreme court of pakistan will be the focal point by pakistan with some of the numbers and
4:24 pm
mr know in the upcoming elections the diet election campaign will be focused on this particular decision and they will be seeking public support they have already declared their day in court is the public so the decision will be definitely a key point in the upcoming election and continue to play our video important pivotal role not only within his party but in the national politics but only one thing that he cannot and peered into the parliament that mean he cannot contest elections if that's the case obviously you know people watching across pakistan and i've been there reported from there you know you ask anybody what they think of their politicians they say well they're all corrupt what the court has done today is send a very strong message to politicians across the country across the party structure all the parties that is to say that we're watching you have they not. well it's a very good point made by you that indeed is
4:25 pm
a very strong message and this message is not only to former prime minister nawaz sharif this message is all due to the another political leader that is senior leader of pakistan that he can stop any and who has also been disqualified for life and this is. the decision is also a landmark and as far as the article which has been debated by the court there is article sixty two so your video. message to all political parties to the all politicians there they have to be in line with the party good sixty two are the sixty three of the constitution of islamic republic of pakistan that means these political leaders before contesting the elections they have to be the right years they have to be the honest they have to be the operate person so the message by the supreme court not only applies when mr know if it is applied on all major political parties put it to good leaders so the political leaders would be very

where the russian former double agents are going to cripple who was poisoned last month had been under surveillance from moscow for at least five years now those comments were made in a letter from a senior british intelligence official to the nato secretary general. and his daughter yulia were exposed to toxic nerve agents in solsbury in march he was jailed in russia in two thousand and six for passing information to the u.k. but was later released as part of a spy swap deal let's get more on this for our correspondent need barker joins me now from london it does seem need that we're getting sort of like this small trickle of very specific information on the scruple case from the british that from their position is trying to strengthen their argument against russia. yes you do get impression that the u.k. are continuing to point the finger at russia and attempting to bolster what evidence they have that moscow is behind this the latest comments come from monk
4:28 pm
said well u.k.'s national security advisor who has written a letter to you and stoltenberg nato secretary general with more details about the poisoning of these cripples and soulsby last month in that exchange said well it's been said that he believed this cripples have been under russian surveillance for at least five years that you get a scrip our e-mails have been under close scrutiny and it was said wells opinion that surrogate script was very likely being seen as a potential legitimate target for assassination by the russian state probably comes as very little surprise that a former double agent would still be under the watchful eye of russian intelligence but as you said he did arrive here in two thousand and ten no attempt to piece to be made to hide his identity or spirit him away to some secret location in a part of the country it was a very high profile spy swap of the brought him here to the u.k. the question is why perhaps did he remain
4:29 pm
a person of interest for russian intelligence will the moments i think may be coming to an end is a press briefing by the russian ambassador to the u.k. alexander yakka vanco he said that he was surprised by the spying allegations and as accuse the u.k. of a policy of trying to destroy all evidence linked to the script case claim versus counter claim continues this diplomatic route is really showing no sign of abating whatsoever but for the moment we'll leave it there of course and come back to what that situation develops thank you. well it's time for weather his editor with news of what wildfires in oklahoma we talk about the bad weather yesterday where the cold that sort of thing he says the full shrank across the state to be seen some very very high temperatures in the southwestern corner very low temperatures converse lee in the northeast if only the two would come together see the satellite picture here and you can see our latest area of low pressure which is making its

4:33 pm
well the back to the al-jazeera news are i was the whole rom the reminder of our top news stories russian foreign minister sergei lavrov says moscow has proof that last saturday's suspected chemical attack in syria was staged with the help of foreign agents to strengthen an anti russia campaign the united nations security council is to hold an open door meeting in the coming hours after russia called on member states for a session. also thousands of palestinians are out for a third friday of protests along the gaza israel border fence several people have already been injured in the demonstrations palestinians could be seen hurling stones towards the border and lighting tires on fire. and pakistan's supreme court has banned the former prime minister nawaz sharif from politics for life he was

removed from office last year on corruption allegations. now the democratic republic of congo is not attending its own donor conference in geneva on friday saying that the u.n. has exaggerated the number of people who need aid although violence has subsided in the sign many people have not received food due to a lack of funding but escalating violence has displaced more than four million people within the d.l.c. and since december alone seventy thousand have fled fighting in the east to camps in the brain uganda what malcolm webb has retrace the refugees journey now he's travelled from uganda's capital kampala to the ching wali camp where most of the refugees as resettled he then headed to kiss any land site on the shore of lake albert in the d.r. sea and this is where many refugees take boats to escape to uganda and finally he visits one year and a couple of people who fled the fighting well malcolm actually joins us now from
4:35 pm
borneo and it's a grim site is it not. right conditions here really aren't very good at all there are a few thousand people living in a few hundred shelters made of plastic sheets stretched over frames made of sticks it's been raining a lot today in the the ground inside these shelters is just bare earth you can imagine the impact on the quality of life here when the heavy downpour of rain and also on people's health been speaking some of the community leaders say many of the children have diarrhea that's just one of the many problems that it's all come out but they're only living here because they were attacked in their villages by militia. saying that people have been chopped up with machetes young children elderly people it's acting forces made it clear everyone had to get out so most of the population from the area to the north of twenty years fled some of them are in camps like this around the town of when the tens of thousands of crossed the border into neighboring uganda and we retraced the route of some of those refugees
4:36 pm
starting off in the tangle ali refugee camp in uganda let's take a look at the story now. it's taken days for cooma corinne and her children to get from have a village in the democratic republic of congo to the safety of this refugee camp in uganda with two year old patrice yes. and he septic sprays just too much. life in the camp begins with frank scenes in a medical check. fled her village after her brother in law was killed by a militia with machetes. husband his father was left behind they don't know when the fighting started we were very scared other people ran away but my husband wasn't around so i waited after everyone left i was alone so then i decided to run. among thousands who fled to uganda since the
4:37 pm
beginning of this year most of them arrive here by boat on the shores of lake albert borders the two countries un registers them before taking them to the camps . retrace their journey across the lake. in their wooden boat. carrying is already. very often. others have. one or two days. around. the u.n. says the people who took this journey are among millions of congolese in need of help displaced by multiple conflict across the country he says the crisis is neglected and he wants government meeting at a conference in geneva to donate around one and a half million dollars when we reached the congolese side of the lake we found more
4:38 pm
people who fled their homes many here couldn't afford the boat and unlike those in uganda they receive almost no assistance but the government says the un has greatly exaggerated the number of people affected by the crisis so it's not attending the conference. but. we're not trying to deny that there is a humanitarian problem but we don't consider it's at that level we have to avoid making a business out of the humanitarian situation which discourages investors we can bring economic development. it's clear that many congolese desperately need help chronic poverty makes the crisis much worse. this camp one of the things that the community leaders told us they need most of all is food no formal food distribution here and there's one charity that's cooking people about one meal a day although apparently there's not always enough to go around the shelters
4:39 pm
obviously a key issue as well as well as health care and sanitation and a very serious problem and we just heard a short while ago of that one point five billion dollars the u.n. asking for at the conference in geneva the european union is one of the host was just announced that they will be donating seventy seven million euros towards the humanitarian crisis here so that's a tiny fraction of the amount of money that the u.n. and other humanitarian organizations are asking for whether it is the millions of people affected the u.n. claims or hundreds of thousands as the congolese government claims is definitely no question at all that the people here are in desperate need of help. for the moment malcolm of course will follow you and the events. time progresses thank you. we must protest in india and allegations that the ruling b j p is trying to protect men accused of raping and murdering. indian administered kashmir the
