the people he's showing around came to germany as refugees this is just one of several billion museums taking part in the project called a meeting point and as well as bringing people together one of its aims is to emphasize the contribution of migrants right up to the present day to western culture. because i've been here for some time i can help them with lots of things that mrs ford to me the great thing is it's not just about museums about forming a new life it is a part of life it's culture. here for nearly half a century a controversial political figure in the cold in the middle east and one who was never far from crisis at home or abroad. in a two part series al-jazeera world tells the story of king hussein of jordan episode two. at this time on al-jazeera.

know he wants threatened kim jong un with fire and fury but don't trump now seems to be pulling out all the stops to come tensions with north korea u.s. president has hailed secret talks between his cia chief and the north korean leader saying forged a good relationship with came when they met last week the groundwork is being laid for a possible summit between the two leaders relations with pyongyang also top of the agenda at the president's talks with the japanese prime minister which meant taking place in florida i think by car. we're going to know one of the three. states and by the way you just left north korea and great meeting with you john. and got along with him really well really really. he's that kind of going very smart but he gets along with people. from north korean media say kim jong un is

reeling party will hold a full meeting of its central committee on friday after their diplomatic editor james bays in pyongyang with the latest. north korean officials are not commenting on all confirming the visit of. to this city all of the information at this stage is coming from the u.s. side but this is the highest level visit for a serving u.s. official since secretary of state madeline albright came to pyongyang in the year two thousand the u.s. doesn't have diplomatic relations with north korea there is no embassy here members of the diplomatic community have told me though they are aware that there is a channel of communication of negotiation ongoing between the u.s. and north korea between the cia and the north korean intelligence service they clearly are looking at the possibility of a meeting between the supreme leader kim yong and president trump the possible things that could be discussed possible things that could happen at the end of that
1:04 am
meeting for example three american citizens who are held in jail here in north korea the americans want them to be released but also have been talking about the possible venues for a meeting could it be in europe could it be here in pyongyang could it be down in the demilitarized zone between north and south korea are there other places that we mentioned mongolia for example we're expecting to hear from donald trump and she is at a joint news conference shortly this is the scene at the u.s. president's mylar go resort what is often called the winter white house bring you that news conference as soon as it starts but first let's go to kimberly how kit is in palm beach in florida kimberly what are we expecting from this news conference. well donald trump has been tweeting in the last hour or so about the great relationship that he has had and the experience that he's had with the japanese prime minister shinzo abbay while he's been here for this two day summit expect
1:05 am
that we'll hear a lot of that as this press conference gets underway but there really were two themes in this meeting the security issue specially with respect to north korea a concern for japan looking for some security assurances and also a bit of a point of contention when it comes to trade so we expect that these are the two topics that are going to be discussed but certainly what's overshadowing all of this is what you talked about at the start of this program the news that in fact donald trump sent in a secret meeting his cia director might pompei o for secret talks with kim jong un in advance of that meeting that should take place between the u.s. president the north korean leader at the end of may or early june now that certainly has made japan uncomfortable because usually the united states consults with japan on these sorts of matters and it appears once again that that was not the terms primary concern in fact the japanese were essentially sidelined by the united states so a little bit of awkwardness and tension in the midst of what donald trump continues
1:06 am
to say is a great relationship in the meantime some u.s. senators are not happy with want compares proposed woman to sector of state how how would his complicate the diplomatic efforts with north korea. it's a big problem lauren given the fact that you know donald trump has not got his top diplomat in place in advance of you know essentially four to six weeks this very important and and historic meeting so this is a certainly a concern for the white house because the list of u.s. senators say they will not support mike pompei as confirmation to become the next secretary of state is certainly problematic for this white house now they are downplaying it saying they're not concerned but certainly their concern is growing and that's evident the fact that they held a press conference or rather a telephone call conference call with reporters well here at mar a lago kellyanne conway the presidential advisor leading that saying that they're
1:07 am
not worried that in fact pompei was highly qualified he was the right person to go and lay the groundwork for this very important meeting but certainly there is some nervousness among this white house because we anticipate that confirmation vote could come as early as next week and those votes in the senate are no guarantee committee how could you very much indeed. end of an era in cuba the cuban national assembly has nominated me. as the sole kind of date to take over the presidency from roe castro fifty nine years on from when fidel castro made the successful revolution in cuba is the first time to castro's would be leading the country and pays a visit to the nomination but the results would be announced until thursday when d.s. can and is expected to be sworn in on
1:08 am
a solution you've been following events in the capital of allah. it's only a formality now before cuba's national assembly announces the votes for d.s. can nail who will be the new president replacing raul castro the first person whose name is not castro who will be leading this country after fifty nine years he was the only candidate so clearly there is no surprise but it is a historic moment these can l. is a long time communist party cato he is regarded as loyal to the party loyal to the communist party and above all loyal to the revolution and he is not seen as a reformist as a modern man maybe open minded but certainly not a person who will come to cuba to change the system on the contrary he is being trumpeted by a whole castro and the communist party and all of the state run media in fact as the man or the candidate rather of continuity the one who will remain firm and
1:09 am
loyal to the communist party and to this one party system the cuba has had for nearly six decades despite so much pressure from around the world for it to change the turkish president has called surprise early elections which are unannounced that elections origination jools from november twenty ninth teen will now be held on june the twenty fourth turkey is switching from a parliamentary system to a presidential one meaning that new powers for the president will take effect a year or year than planned lent is the director of the turkey project at the center for strategic and international studies he says the situation is looking favorable for another edda one victory. the incumbent party always says advantage is present there go on has and i'm broken record of electoral success stretching back to november two thousand and two when his party for us won. elections and gain power and you know the the main opposition party republican people's party

as a ceiling of about twenty five percent and has rarely gone beyond that the national action party as i said earlier is in alliance with. missed out on the mainly kurdish h d p party is in tatters and a number of its members and of parliament including their leader are in jail so you know the circumstances of the situation certainly looks favorable for another electoral victory by as they are going on in his party chemical weapons inspectors waiting to enter the site of a suspected gas attack in syria have been delayed due to security concerns the chief of the missions says it's now unclear when they'll be able to enter duma a team arrived in the capital damascus on saturday and un security group and to the city on tuesday to assess the situation had to withdraw off to gunfire and protests the u.s. and its allies accuse the syrian government and russia of delaying the inspectors

entry and tampering with a site but moscow has denied this meanwhile the head of the a p c w has rejected russian claims that traces of a second nerve agent were found in salzburg whether former russian spy segued strip out and his daughter were poisoned the u.k. representative to the a p c w has also dismissed russia's suggestion that britain was behind the strip. what was really striking about the session today was that russian continues to provide huge amounts of disinflation to others including on this occasion a russian government official actually accusing the united kingdom of poisoning the script of deducing them into a coma before they could poison them so that the u.p.c. w. could then go and investigate that is an outrageous accusation was made by a russian official in the o.p.c. w. today and those kinds of false narratives need to be stopped i. want to take you

straight to that room we're expecting the news conference with donald trump and shinzo abbe the japanese prime minister expect to hold a joint news conference shortly that is taking place in mar-a lago which is the president's resort which is described often as the winter white house and that the backdrop of this meeting is that the announcement from president trump today that his cia director had actually met kim jong un in north korea the north korean leader secret talks with him were confirmed by the president and this rather put a shadow over this meeting between president trump and prime minister. as the japanese were perhaps feeling they might have been slightly left in the dark about that meeting with the north koreans brain can really help it who has been monitoring the summit in palm beach so. how much do you think that the bridges have been rebuilt because japan and and the u.s. although they are on the face of it allies have not been getting on that well because
1:13 am
japan after all is one of the countries that was facing terrorist wasn't it up until. you know still training terrorists. that's right in fact we're watching in this joint press conference to find out if there's any news on that because certainly it was a major slight to a key u.s. ally you know when it comes to trade japan is america's fourth largest trading partner the united states that is and certainly the fact that donald trump did not exempt japan when he sent a whole host of countries to those foreign tariffs that are put on the imports into the united states of foreign steel and aluminum certainly was a point of difference between these two men something that many presumed maybe worked out and so we're watching very carefully for that but donald trump even just a few hours ago as the two men spoke to reporters was very clear that he believes
1:14 am
there is a enormously unfair relationship when it comes to trade in favor of japan and hurting the united states and this is been a key issue for donald trump on the campaign trail even before he became president not just with japan but a whole host of countries this need in his words as he said again today to make trade reciprocal so certainly one of the issues that donald trump was hoping to talk about in all of this was perhaps laying the groundwork for freer trade with japan possibly giving u.s. companies greater access to that very lucrative japanese market something he said is that he's hoping to quote shrink the u.s. trade deficit hopefully reach balance now one of the other headlines that's come out of these two days of meeting so far is the fact that donald trump has managed to secure a purchase by japan for tens of billions in u.s. airplanes presumably fighter jets as well as passenger planes so that lauren is another big headline again donald trump you know boasting about being able to
1:15 am
create jobs very eager to show that in terms of these working relationships that he has with world leaders including we should point out since zero abbay that he is. more than any other foreign leader as president that that he is making progress and success in favor of the american voter and kimberly as we watch the dignitaries falling into the room there before that news conference and one other issue i suppose the ticket was worried about was the fact that if if north korea's weapons program is kind of one of the things that is looked at and they say perhaps freeze all the kind of nuclear weapons that they could still be shorter range missiles which could threaten japan and that's maybe one of the security guarantees that has been looking for reassurance on that front right we're certainly watching for those security assurances which were really of key and critical importance to japan given the fact because of its positioning in geography that it
1:16 am
is so vulnerable and so certainly donald trump has been underscoring the importance of this groundwork meeting that was laid in place by his cia director mike pompei even though it is perhaps an orthodox that in his words this is certainly been very fertile in terms of relationship building to try and secure the ultimate goal of the united states and so much of the international community that is ending the nuclear program of kim jong il and so certainly these are some of the key issues we'll be watching for in this joint press conference kimberly i think you tom that perfectly because they we can see. president trump a walking into the room that's innocent in that news conference in palm beach thank you very much i want to begin today by expressing my deep condolences to the entire bush family on the passing of former first lady barbara
1:17 am

of seventy three years on never beat that record president george h.w. bush to the surviving children jeb and neil and marvin dorothy and former president george w. bush and to their many wonderful grandchildren and great grandchildren this evening i also want to send a message to all of the brave service members from the united states france and the united kingdom who were involved in the very successful strikes on targets associated with the syrian chemical weapons program last week once again the unmatched skill of the united states military and our great partners and allies was demonstrated to the entire world missiles were shot
1:19 am
they tried to knock them down they weren't in the least successful they hit none the purpose of our strike was to establish a strong deterrent against the use of banned chemical weapons. civilized nations must join together to prevent the horrors of chemical warfare and in fact warfare and i think our allies really were absolutely world class wonderful we thank them for their support today i'm thrilled to be joined by my good friend prime minister. of japan highly respected gentleman prime minister malani and i are honored to host you and mrs abi once again at bar lago. we're grateful for the tremendous hospitality you showed us during our visit to your country last fall it was
1:20 am
a true privilege to be welcomed to the magnificent land of japan or as i've heard all my life the land of the rising sun. it's so great during our visit to asia in november we had tremendous success enlisting support for our campaign of maximum pressure on the north korean regime as you know i will be meeting with kim jong un in the coming weeks to discuss the de nuclearization of the korean peninsula hopefully that meeting will be a great success and we're looking forward to it would be a tremendous thing for north korea and a tremendous thing for the world so we will be doing everything possible to make it a worldwide success not just for the united states to
1:21 am
a south korea or north korea or japan but for the entire world we hope to see the day when the whole korean peninsula can live together in safety prosperity and peace this is the destiny of the korean people. who deserve in have gone through so much over the years we hope it all works out we'll be trying very hard i want to thank the prime minister for his inside in support over the past year as we have pursued the dream of a peaceful nuclear free korea shinzo you have worked very hard along with us and all of our people and we thank you very much and we're with you and you're a lot closer than we are but we'll work in this together and thank you very much you support has been critical to getting us to this important moment in time it's
1:22 am
a historic moment and possibly beyond that if it works out properly our discussions today reaffirmed the close cooperation between the united states and japan on do issue of north korea and our common defense we will not repeat the mistakes of previous administrations our campaign of maximum pressure will continue until north korea the nuclear rises we have great respect for many aspects of what they're doing but we have to get it together we have to end nuclear weapons ideally in all parts of the world that would be a goal for all of us to hope for and to cherish as i've said before there is a bright path available to north korea. when it is denuclearization in
1:23 am
a complete and verifiable and irreversible way it will be a great day for them be a great day for the world during my visit to japan last fall i met with japanese families who endured the terrible heartbreak of having their loved ones abducted by the north korean regime we want to see these families reunited as soon as possible and i know for a fact that it's one of the truly most important thing on chins those mind we talk about it often it's so important to you and we're going to do everything possible to have them brought back and bring them back to japan i gave you that promise. the united states also supports japan's efforts to improve its defense capabilities and we're exploring ways to expedite the sale of american military
1:24 am
equipment to japan through the foreign military sales program we've stepped up our effort not only with respect to japan but other allies that when they order military equipment from us we will get it taken care of and they will get their equipment rapidly it would be in some cases years before orders would take place because a bureaucracy with to cooperate of defense state department we are short circuiting that it's now going to be a matter of days if they're our allies we are going to help them get this very important great military equipment and nobody nobody makes it like the united states it's the best in the world by far we're also working to improve our economic partnership by reducing our trade imbalance and removing barriers to u.s.
1:25 am

the members including the former president bush because of. the wind from the sea and the blue sky thank you very much for inviting us once again here at mara lago and we have been able to have extensive and fruitful discussions this time around and i feel thankful for about a year ago. when we had dinner. back bed north korea had enforced the launching of the i.c.b.m. this is something that we cannot. accept and after i mentioned that president trump without any prior plans he moved in front of the camera to say that we are allies of japan. and he can move aid we

commitment a strong commitment to the world in front the media donald the words that you mentioned back then. is something that is deeply ingrained in my heart along with the good memories that we have in our visit tomorrow a logo and it shows how strong and robust the alliance has been is that has lasted over half a century. and i truly offer my respect to what you have done since i want a half years have passes since then we will have. the first u. s. korea a summit. thanks to the decision made by president drum we must not repeat our past mistakes present trump and myself i think on this point are
1:29 am
completely aligned. after the framework agreement ninety five and also the six party talks. they commit north korea committed to the abandonment of nuclear missiles but they have not kept to this commitment. all efforts made by the international committee have been broken and we have seen that that time has been used to develop their own new clear agenda. and in this sense along with the international community u.s. and japan. have looked for a confirmation for complete very fireball and irreversible unbanned meant of nuclear weapons or missiles by the north korean regime regime it. we have gone through as many possible thinkable scenarios and have made
1:30 am
extensive consultations in regard to this issue. we must not. return. any favors to north korea by just by simply them joining the talks we would need them to commit oprah grammatic and substantial steps for the abandonment of their weapons. the most important priority for us is the abduction issue and having a corporation from the u.s. has also been confirmed in our talks and this has also been reiterated here in this forum he mentioned clearly that they will make. efforts to that and i feel reassured from that statement donald half
1:31 am
a year ago when you visited our country in japan you met with some of the family members who had family members abducted you listen to them and you mentioned that you wanted to help them. and that. it is engraved in the hearts of the japanese people. we would lie to. bolster our efforts to have bring resolution to the abduction issue in north korea and north korea they have ample resources. we believe that if north korea can take the appropriate direction. then it is able to
1:32 am
bring happiness to its. its country countryman and we can open the normalization of diplomatic talks with the other countries. in order for us to see north korea move in this direction the big assumption is the complete abandonment of missiles. and through the talks that we've had with the u.s. we. hope that. north korea will move into this direction. in terms of the economy. u.s. and japan will lead the economic growth in the in the pacific region and we would look at free and fair trade we've been able to have candid discussions with president trop in this area first of all. we must strengthen the
1:33 am
ties between the two countries in terms of economy. there is an increase in terms of energy and aircraft export from the u.s. . and also. with the. tax reforms there has been some increase in investments. this has been. shown to result in the growth spurt of the economy. and we would like to support this the further growth and based on this foundation. we would like to look and drive the economic growth of the indo pacific regions and we have many

countries have committed to going into discussions about.
