more opaque language they're talking about this meeting which is now being called a clean jury meeting of the seven central committee of the korean workers party and the statement in the state news agency and in the state media says it's to discuss the important historic period of developing korean revolution now having this meeting and i think only going to be something that's going to rubberstamp the decisions that have always already been made by the supreme leader here in pyongyang but i think there's also another thing going on here which is trying to prepare the people of north korea for these talks which have not been mentioned they've been talking about the summit with south korea but the meeting with donald trump is something they're going to have to prepare the people here for but for decades here they've been talking about the u.s. as this imperialistic evil country now they've got to do a little bit of

a change on that james i want to ask you about the ongoing sanctions that are going on against north korea at the moment and the impact of those donald trump had mentioned during that press conference the pressure would continue he didn't specify particularly what one would assume that would be sanctions until north korea denuclearize has been done and some did say thanks to president xi of china regarding the sanctions that china put on north korea how difficult do you think it's going to be to hold these meetings in the goshi ations with those sanctions still in place. well i think the north koreans a well used to sanctions they've had sanctions for many years and the sanctions clearly have an effect here they stop north korea importing some things that it really would like but it's also worth telling you they are very successful at they doing those sanctions i've been wandering around some of the shops here you can

find goods that have been imported from neighboring countries you can find goods that have been imported from the west to they've managed to get around the sanctions western diplomats that i've spoken to when i was at the u.n. in new york am here on the korean peninsula will privately admit that the north koreans are pretty good at getting things through the sanctions also it privately what they say publicly the sanctions do have an effect on the north korean people and on the international humanitarian efforts in this country james for now thanks very much indeed i want to bring in kathy novak she's joining us from seoul to give us the regional perspective particularly from south korea kathy we've got this summit coming up between the north and the south korea's fairly soon do we know what kind of concessions the south is prepared to make in order to achieve some sort of reduction in tension with with the north. well the lines coming out of the

south korean government tend to be that the focus from their perspective will be on denuclearization and bringing peace to the korean peninsula south korea under the administration of the liberal president and has been happy to engage with north korea and have dialogue so it is pressing ahead with this summit it has announced that portions of it are going to be televised live that much is being made of that here in south korea and the fact that kim jong un the north korean leader is open to that happening almost three thousand journalists have registered to cover the summit so the south korean government for its part seems to be quite optimistic going into it but in terms of concession i think that remains to be seen in the past some of the things that have emerged from only two historic into korean some of that have happened in the past have been cultural exchanges economic exchanges for example the reunions of members of separated families this time around though

it seems that the south korean government does want to keep the focus firmly on denuclearization the question though is what does that mean to both sides the south korean the united states wants to see north korea dismantling its nuclear program and when north korea historically has talked about denuclearization it has had kaviak saying that north korea would be open to discussing it if it no longer feels threatened by the united states so how those two views come together will be interesting to watch many of south korea and older conservatives for a long time and been against any sort of easing of tensions a reporter with the north because their memories are long but given the fact that these changes are not happening is there a change in their view do you think. i think there remain conservatives here in south korea that are skeptical of north korea's intentions and their info indeed defectors who have come to south korea from north korea have expressed

a sort of a distrust in the administration of north korea and some of those views seem to be echoed by the japanese president prime minister shinzo abbay when he said that you know north korea shouldn't be rewarded as kimberly hauck i was pointing out for just showing up and those conservative views are that north korea should not be allowed to extract any concessions from south korea without giving up any in return and the fear on their part is that north korea may be just trying to buy time by appearing open to dialogue while continuing to develop its nuclear weapons program and not actually giving any concessions in terms of winding it back rob kathy novak live for us from seoul cathy thanks very much we've come down there is poised to become the new man in charge in cuba he's been nominated by the national assembly as the sole count it for president the first from outside the castro family in
