he has i'm so there's a lot to unpack here but we go back to james komi when he was still director of the f.b.i. he wrote these memos in the early days of the trump administration documenting the private conversations that he had with trump in person and over the phone komi says he wrote this all down immediately after these meetings because he was troubled by some of the topics that trump broached two requests in particular courting to komi trump asked him to drop an f.b.i. investigation into a senior adviser and the president according to komi asked him for a pledge of loyalty now reminder this is as komi was leading the f.b.i. that was investigating possible russian meddling in the elections komi refused to pledge his loyalty and was soon fired by trump then after his firing komi shared two of these memos with a close friend who then released them to

a reporter komi says he did this with the intention of hoping to provoke a special counsel investigation into the trump administration and that is exactly what happened today with robert mueller that special counsel who is investigating possible collusion between the trump campaign associates and russia as well as possible obstruction of justice by the president himself has them and what is trauma hope to gain by discrediting the memos. well if you look at that tweet again that day today he said that the special counsel investigation was established based on an illegal act that act teaser furring to is komi sharing the contents of the memo and in trying to discredit the memos trump is also trying to discredit the special counsel investigation which has caused him many problems both both personally and politically but it should also be pointed out that also today trump tweeted that these memos show clearly that there is no collusion and no obstruction

so what we have here is mixed messaging from trump on one hand he's holding up these memos as credible evidence of his own innocence while on the other hand he's trying to discredit them by saying that they were leaked illegally have them all right heidi castro in washington thanks for that our republican strategist joe watkins joins us now from philadelphia he is a former white house aide to president george h.w. bush thanks very much for being with us so let's talk about president trump first what does it say for public faith in these important institutions in the united states like the f.b.i. like the justice department when you have a president and his surrogates as well constantly attacking their attacker to the end and accusing them of political bias. well it's meant of course to build up some sense of distrust by the public in these institutions and this is

rather unprecedented we haven't had u.s. presidents in the past attack these institutions within government so only these investigate investigative institutions have not ever been attacked by a sitting u.s. president so this is something new for our country. at the same time i'm not sure that everybody is buying it despite the fact that there are these almost daily attacks on the integrity of the f.b.i. and on its leadership and on the department of justice i think americans for the most part still have a great deal of confidence in those institutions and what do you base that on. based on the fact that for the most part the president is trying to message his base he's got a very solid base of maybe about thirty percent and that base for the most part agrees with him on almost every issue and they're the ones that will buy the fact that the certain leadership in the f.b.i. is against the president or that certain individuals at the department of justice

have it in for the president and that's why he tweets constantly about them and does all that he can through his tweets of course to discredit them or to diminish them but at the same time i don't know that the majority of americans are led to believe that james komi or that the top officials in the just department have done anything wrong i think that a majority of americans would like to see this investigation by a special prosecutor muller reach its reach its course and do so in its normal time so from that standpoint i think that americans still have a great deal of faith in the justice department a great deal of faith in these investigating in institutions and on the outside james comey has has plenty of detractors among both republicans and democrats and when when he writes this book giving his side of story and using the book tour to say things like that that he believes trump is morally on fit to be president among other things now that's his opinion and he's entitled to it and many people would

agree with that description but in doing that hasn't he given his critics an opening to coal him in part isn't rather than a law enforcement official. i don't think so remember he's the same guy that announced just a couple weeks for the election that he was opening that there was an investigation of hillary clinton he's somebody who was a registered republican until just before the election so i don't know that he'd be accused of being so terribly partisan one way or the other in this book that he's written and i think people forget who james comey is he's actually a very thorough lawyer he's a lawyers lawyer he's somebody who served as the united states attorney for the southern district in new york and then after that was the deputy attorney general of the united states before because named being named to head up the f.b.i. so he's somebody who has had a distinguished career as a lawyer before being named to head up one of the nation's top investigative
