stuff like when the railway is built and when you come to visit so it's all going according to plan. it's all going according to plan but certainly they've revealed some very frank comments from the north korean leader which i suspect will not get reported in north korea where you are constantly told that the country is better than any other and life is particularly perfect when they talked about comments that kim made to move about a possible moon visit to north korea kim said i would be honestly worried if you come it might be embarrassing bera seeing that the transportation is not good he then returned to the k.t. x. which is the bullet train here in south korea and so they didn't have anything like that in north korea and he said if he came he probably should come by air because the roads were inconvenient so admission there that you very rarely get from the

north koreans that life and economic life is not as good as it is here in the south certainly when i was in north korea in recent days they took us on the subway and told us how it was the best in the world well now very different comics coming from the north korean leader worth noting that the important images that we've seen in the last few hours were not shown live on the north korean media we assume that they will be edited and broadcast later and i think they'll be very careful which images they show but they certainly will be showing the historic meeting. technically they are still at war but this was carefully choreographed to create a new atmosphere of peace north korean leader kim jong un entered from the north side of the demarcation line the south korean president moon j in waited at the concrete block that marks the start of his country's territory.

a historic handshake. and then something in all the years since the korean war that kim's father and grandfather never did the north korean leader crossing into south korea. it was followed by a reciprocal gesture moon jay in very briefly crossing the line into the north. both leaders seemed relaxed and was smiling but of course they hope this summit is only the start of a process and that's likely to be complicated and will involve difficult negotiations. among the most head on today in this meeting i hope there is a new history written with regards to peaceful prosperity and i will approach this with a feeling of a brand new start i'd like to discuss all things as standing honestly and crudely i
7:06 am
would like to take this opportunity to say that i hope to have a very good conversation with president noon today honestly crudely and with intent to. come on. when the supreme leader across the demarcation line on this historic moment there is a mensa expectation almost all over the world and i hope this discussion is productive let's approach this discussion boldly in wishing for peace and i like to give something very big to the people looking at us we have all day to talk and that's to sell and make up for the ten years that we have left the past. very historic images there of this meeting the question though is whether they can go beyond the photo opportunity and actually agree anything and i think we have to be a bit honest here so far they have not agreed anything at all nothing has been decided at this summit there's talk of trying to start the work to have some sort of peace treaty to end the korean war because it never formally ended there was
7:07 am
just an armistice this or truce that was signed in one nine hundred fifty three and in these sort of talks yes you can get the mood there but the devil in the end is in the detail and the big detail that everyone is concerned about is north korea's nuclear program north korea all along or said it needs its nuclear weapons and its missiles to preserve its government so they get they don't get toppled or overturned and of course the other side the u.s. and south korea say no you must give up all your nukes and all your long range missiles getting down to the nitty gritty at some point in the future james many thanks well not everyone is happy about those talks and teen north korea protests have been taking place close to the surf korean city of power shoot where james is based for the next few hours close to where the leaders are meeting demonstrators want president moon the south korean leader to cancel the summit china correspondent adrian brown has more now on how the meeting is being viewed in

beijing. where pictures of this historic event are being shown live on state television here in china that's a measure of the importance the chinese leaders placed on this event of course china is about the only ally that north korea has there's is a relationship forged in blood between one hundred thirty and one hundred fifty thousand chinese troops died fighting on the north korean side in the civil war china though is taking a cautious approach it finds itself in an odd position on the sidelines of a major event happening right on its doorstep. now officially china has said that it welcomes the prospect of a korean peninsula free of nuclear weapons it welcomes the prospect of a peace treaty but where it's less hesitant is the prospect of a unified korea and china worries that a unified korea might perhaps be less friendly to china and perhaps some u.s. troops might remain on the soil of a unified korea. the view from beijing let's get
7:09 am
a broader perspective joining us on skype from singapore is graham on the web he's a research fellow at the rajaratnam school of international studies graeme good to talk to you again what's your main takeaway point so far well in relation to china their concerns are extremely real they ask themselves questions about what the future is going to look like if the korean peninsula is able to work its act act out and to unify did been have degenerated into the sixty year long steel meet between north and south creating a establish security buffer between china and india for the presence of american military forces in the region and so therefore it's quite understandable why the chinese government particularly under president xi jinping would be quite concerned about how changes in that security environment can possibly put at risk chinese national security interests ok they have clearly kept the dialogue and the level of
7:10 am
dialogue the intricacy of it incredibly simple to date but by definition surely when we start talking about the summit between north korea and the united states that dialogue has to get complex because then they have to start talking about things like the state of the economy in north korea denuclearization sanctions the relationship between pyongyang and beijing. certainly certainly did there's no running away from these issues i mean right now today's summit is more formed and substance is about getting the top of the relationship right there's been an immense trust deficit deficit between north and south korea in fact a trust deficit all around between all the stakeholders involved and that needs to be rebuilt before substantive discussions can be can be tackled head on but when once you get into those substantive discussions clearly beijing like tokyo will want to have a seat at the table and to articulate very clearly what their concerns are because
7:11 am
all their concerns will have to be squared off in order for. peace to be truly forged not just on the peninsula but in the region and so when we come back to china's role in china's concerns these things will it will be have to be discussed . we will have to unpack he's rather uncomfortable issues and it's going to be a long drawn affair that's for sure because the perspectives among a good number of countries in the region are actually quite divergent when it comes to what the end state in the korean peninsula ought to look like both leaders both delegations today obviously wanting to appear and they have been utterly utterly charming for mr kim how does he want to be seen to see want to be seen as a end of the leader or does he want to be seen as a leader who is part of the nuclear club i mean is that his his international political calling card. absolutely i concur with that assessment.
7:12 am
all the established you know historical precedence and logic here you like dictates that kim jong un has gone this far in investing in his nuclear weapons capability i mean carrying on from the work of his father and his grandfather you like and it just it's quite puzzling to think that he would want to or reverse that investment in time soon so what we can expect north korea under kim jong un to do is to negotiate towards. having the right to possess nuclear weapons as any other nuclear power today particularly in the u.s. france the united kingdom russia or china or india or pakistan and to and to be recognized for that by the same time to assure the international community that north korea bears no mel intent on or sinister intentions against any country in the world today and i think if you don't able to achieve that assurance that he has
7:13 am
no hostile intentions but at the same time it will to argue his case that he has a right his country has a right to bear nuclear weapons i think he might be able to achieve that outcome where north korea gets to keep what it has and to still achieve this perception recognition as a normal state as ever a pleasure talking to many thanks for joining us here on al-jazeera graham on web in singapore that well the white house has released new photos of the new u.s. secretary of state meeting the north korean leader mike pompei o travel to pyongyang earlier this month as the cia director to lay the groundwork for a meeting between kim jong un and the u.s. president donald trump shuttle for late may early june pompei and is now on his way to a nato meeting in brussels before traveling to the middle east the u.s. senate confirmed him as the top u.s. diplomat by fifty seven votes to forty two. in other news the armenian parliament is expected to hold an extraordinary session in the coming days to vote for a new prime minister the country was plunged into a political crisis this week after the former prime minister. stepped down
