10:01 pm
i am announcing today that the united states will withdraw from the iran nuclear deal. donald trump polls ours have an agreement he described as defective to its core and imposes the highest level of sanctions against iran. hello i'm maryam namazie and london with al jazeera also coming up immediate reaction from the iranian media hassani is saying his government will bypass washington a negotiated with the deals european signatories. also reaction coming in from france's emanuel macron the president was a champion of the deal and says he regrets the u.s. decision.
10:02 pm
in the last hour the us president donald trump has announced that he is pulling the united states out of the iran nuclear deal calling the two thousand and fifteen agreement defective to its core trump said the disastrous deal was an embarrassment for the u.s. he also said he would be imposing the highest level of sanctions against iran i am announcing today that the united states will withdraw from the iran nuclear deal in a few moments i will sign a presidential memorandum to begin reinstating u.s. nuclear sanctions on the uranian regime we will be instituting the highest level of economic sanction. any nation that helps around in its quest for nuclear weapons could also be strongly sanctioned by the united states america
10:03 pm
will not be held hostage to nuclear blackmail we will not allow american cities to be threatened with destruction and we will not allow a regime the chance death to america to gain access to the most deadly weapons on earth. well iran's president has an iranian offered an almost immediate response to the announcement. that they have done nothing except put empty signatures on pieces of paper without doing anything about it the iranian mission on the other hand has agreed to everything and accomplished all its responsibilities we had some duties based on that agreement and we have delivered all of them but today we can see which is the country that doesn't respect international agreements we've done nothing wrong is not acceptable that the u.s. is pulling out. let's go live now to our white house correspondent kimberly how that can leave all the options and scenarios before and president trump does appear
10:04 pm
to have chosen the most extreme one which will worry his european allies in terms of the consequences for them what is the explanation from the white house for this decision. well certainly there has been the explanation that we have heard often from this president that is that this the j c p u a negotiated twenty fifteen didn't go far enough that the secretary of state john kerry who was advocating for u.s. interests left a couple of key loopholes namely that it didn't extend beyond twenty twenty five the concerns of donald trump that there was no mechanism in terms of the inspections that there was allowed to continue this enrichment of uranium i think what's interesting is some of the reaction that we're getting from capitol hill very much on the concern of top democrat member of congress is how this is going to
10:05 pm
affect the united states moving forward with regard to its you its u.s. allies the fact that this could hurt not only america's global leadership but its role in standing in the world and also even from dianne feinstein a top democratic senator saying this is a strategic mistake by the president simply to fulfill a campaign promise but what i think is most notable is that there are some republican members of congress including speaker paul ryan who articulated that there was disappointment that there wasn't sort of a longer effort or more forceful effort to work with european allies to address some of the concerns so i think there certainly is an understanding that donald trump may have been accurate in some of his concerns of the limitations of the deal but certainly members of congress overwhelmingly even members from his own party saying that there is some disappointment with the president's decision to withdraw and re impose sanctions we know the trump administration thought that this deal was
10:06 pm
not tough enough on iran we know they wanted some sort of additional agreement in terms of iran's ballistic missile program and also its activities in the region but what are the prospects for this is there on there any plans now for members of cabinet to engage in any kind of process or talks. well we had a statement from the current u.s. secretary of state mike pompei o you heard the president at the tail end of that announcement saying that he is working actively engaged with north korea on that north korean issue but he released a statement his office saying in fact that with regard to iran that he will be working with allies to prevent a nuclear weapon from being acquired acquired but that the feeling of the trumpet ministration is that this is so much broader in terms of concerns about iran than just the nuclear threat the statement goes on to say that what the hope is of the
10:07 pm
trumpet ministration now is to work with european allies to in the words of the secretary of state address the menace across the middle east what the trumpet ministration repeatedly calls iran's malign activity and there is the hope that the u.s. secretary of state can build what he calls a global effort so already what we see is the announcement and now the next phase by the trumpet ministration reaching out to allies in the in the hope of addressing the concerns that the president feels were not addressed by the twenty fifteen nuclear agreement all right kimberly held at the white house thank you very much well a short time ago the european union's foreign affairs chief federico greeny reacted to president trump's decision she says the deal is working and the e.u. will continue to stick to it the european union will remain committed to the continued and effective implementation of the nuclear deal we fully trust the work the competence and the autonomy of the international atomic energy agency that has
10:08 pm
published reports certifying that iran has fully complied with its commitments the lifting of nuclear related sanctions is an essential part of the agreement. the european union has repeatedly stressed that the lifting of nuclear related sanctions has a positive impact not only on trade and economic relations with iran but also mainly crucial benefits for the iranian people. a diplomatic editor james bays is live for us from u.n. headquarters in new york we know that president trump had a long score on the iran nuclear deal perhaps this decision will come as no great surprise but nonetheless what has been the reaction there. well i think diplomats from the other signatories to this deal were expecting this but they're still pained by a short time ago al-jazeera spoke to the deputy russian ambassador here at the
10:09 pm
united nations who said it was disappointing but not surprising he was asked whether there could now be a meeting of the u.n. security council about the situation he said all options are now on the table i think we do have a potential problem down the line though between position that you heard there from the e.u. foreign policy chief federica more greeny and the positional sanctions as outlined by the u.s. administration and i think the next few weeks could be crucial we're hearing on capitol hill that the trump administration has given an indication that there might be a slight lag a slight delay before the sanctions actually come into effect maybe ninety to one hundred eighty days we need to seek clarification of that with those days could be key because i think the problem is this that you've heard president trump say other countries that help iran will be targeted we've had a tweet in the last hour from the trumpet ministrations new ambassador to germany
10:10 pm
rick grinnell saying german companies doing business in iran must wind down their operations immediately and that you hear that the e.u. wants to go ahead with the deal while the deal involves no sanctions from the e.u. companies doing business in iran so that potentially is a clash coming between the united states and its key issues key allies on this very issue and of course that affects the survival of the nuclear deal because you heard president rouhani of iran say that they will take a few weeks to examine the situation to speak to the europeans and if they can guarantee the performance of the deal then they'll stay in the deal but if those european countries can't trade because of your citations then the deal looks like it will die a slow death. right of course we also heard president referencing talks with north korea we are expecting a meeting between him and kim jong un possibly in a matter of weeks for there to be such an outcome for the iran nuclear deal one
10:11 pm
that has been described as a violation on the part of the u.s. does that undermine the strength of u.s. credibility i think it makes it harder potentially for the united states alone as a counter argument that it makes the u.s. seem tougher but obviously there is a very high bar for president trump and his potential deal if he can do one would supreme leader kim because the iran nuclear deal took years of painstaking negotiations i think people will examine the iran nuclear deal and whatever deal that trump may or may not get with kim because so far you have a situation where the government in pyongyang have actually conceded nothing and already they're getting a meeting with president trump whereas iran managed to have a deal where it said it would have inspections of its nuclear program were gave up
10:12 pm
its center of centrifuges were gave up much to bits enrich uranium and they find that they're frozen out by the united states very different scenarios but comparisons will clearly be made. thanks very much from the united nations our diplomatic editor james bays there was rather he joins us live now from tehran and we had quite swiftly from president has and ronnie reiterating that iran wanted to continue to adhere to its own commitments under this deal but at the same time saying that it's ready to resume he said it to iran was ready to resume its nuclear work after after holding talks with new members of the deal do we know what iran's plan is now. the resumption of enriching uranium is very much as far as your writings are concerned not only something that could help them with a future. nuclear program or
10:13 pm
a civilian power grid but it is also a political leverage and they know that and they've said over and over again in the weeks and months leading up to today that they would begin enriching uranium because they can in a very short amount of time and it can be expected that if the desire to stay in the deal does not work out of iran's favor if it is unable to negotiate what it needs to get from the deal that the remaining signatories of the nuclear agreement and i think it is very very likely that part of its response to the ending of the deal in the resumption of sanctions is once again enriching uranium having said that iran is a signatory to the north liberation treaty and it has said over and over again from the supreme leader of iran right down to members of parliament the point has been reiterated that making a nuclear bomb is not a pursuit of the iranian government it is not part of the runs political strategy and it will not pursue a nuclear weapon in his speech the true president rouhani also addressed the very
10:14 pm
accusatory tone the president took calling it rude in saying that iran was on the right side of this that it had made no mistakes and he quit the blame for the ending of the deal by the u.s. side squarely on the shoulders of the white house of president. and we knew that president trump and said you know he said many times before that if this iran nuclear deal was to fail that iran would then be forced to come to the table and renegotiate a new agreement now the foreign minister zarif has dismissed that saying that you know this many years to get to this point and that iran would not the to supply in any such talks but one of the possibilities of iran engaging in some kind of process possibly with the european signatories. well we've heard from both presidents and if you look if you look at the rhetoric
10:15 pm
in president rouhani speech reminding his people of all the battles and old wars with the united states the kinds of things that this deal had hoped to put in the past. it really is a return sewer resetting of the clock of the political clock in terms of relations between the united states and iran and with with the accuser tory tone from the trumpet ministration and a very defensive tone coming from the president has been high it is really difficult to see where there is common ground for reaching a new agreement also now with hard line critics and military hard in iran reminding the president that they had told him and that this deal was a fool's errand when nuclear talks began president hassan rouhani will be taking the moral high ground and the government is likely to say to its european partners and anyone else that will listen that we try to do it your way and it didn't work out for us and if they are likely to pursue you making policy on their own terms in the future they must arriving in tehran thank you and now in terms of other
10:16 pm
reaction in the region israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu is an outspoken opponent of the iranian plea deal but some in his government and security establishment see it as a least bad option that should be preserved he spoke in west jerusalem a short time ago and applauded president trumps decision to withdraw israel fully supports president trumps both decision today to reject the disastrous nuclear deal with the terrorist resume into iran israel is opposed the nuclear deal from the start because we said that rather than blocking iran spread to a bomb the deal actually paves the runs to an entire arsenal of nuclear bombs and this within a few years time the removal of sanctions under the do is already produced disastrous results. the deal didn't push war further away it actually brought it closer. and now
10:17 pm
a full set joins us live now despite what we hear netanyahu saying there is this discrepancy between where he stands on the iran nuclear deal and senior members actually within the military and security establishment there in israel all their concerns about what this could mean for israel. well certainly if we've been hearing from sunny former and retired generals and intelligence officials that for all its faults which many people here in israel openly talk about the jaycee v.o.a. the iran nuclear deal had certain merits and was potentially the best way to try and prevent iran from getting a nuclear weapon in the future and that of course is entirely in opposition to what benjamin netanyahu has been arguing for many years now and you heard that he tried to strike a pretty somber resolute tone in his comments both in hebrew and in english but
10:18 pm
behind the scenes there's little question he will be celebrating this because he tried to many years to lobby president obama on this issue he bypassed obama went straight to the u.s. congress made a speech against the idea of an iran nuclear deal since it was instituted he's been lobbying against it now he has this u.s. president who seems to share his concerns and his recommendations almost entirely and i think a couple of things in trump's speech will have stood out specially for netanyahu first trumpet using the the the same sort of speech that netanyahu gave with the screen behind died and saying iran lied last week he cited that talking about it iran not making good on its promises it promised and it lied but more importantly as far as you know is concerned it's the same case about how the j c p o a does not prevent iran from doing other things which the israeli prime minister says a so dangerous to the region bringing missiles into syria having influence in
10:19 pm
various countries president obama talked about wreaking havoc around the region so he has the u.s. president and the united states very much on side he has this very big victory as far as the israeli prime minister is concerned of the u.s. doing its best to consign this deal to history. all right thanks very much from jerusalem harry force it. all let's get some other reaction then to this announcement the british prime minister to reason may says the u.k. edges all sides to remain committed to the iran nuclear deal as full implementation and to act in a spirit of responsibility the u.s. democrat leader nancy pelosi says the decision has raised the possibility of yet another major conflict in the region the french president says he's disappointed but is ready to work on a new deal with iran so just a flavor of the immediate reaction that's been coming in but want to eat at france
10:20 pm
germany and the u.k. regret the u.s. decision to leave the g. c.p.o. a the nuclear nonproliferation regime is at stake we will work collectively on a broader framework covering nuclear activity the post two thousand and twenty five period but listing activity and stability in the middle east notably syria yemen and iraq all that's going to. fly first now in paris. and so european leaders we know that they tried very hard to convince president not to withdraw from the nuclear deal and to continue to uphold it they have vowed to live up to their commitments but how difficult is it going to be to deliver on that without u.s. participation. well i think that's a big question i mean what we have seen this evening is certainly european leaders rallying round and trying to form a common position in that position is as we heard in the words of the e.u.
10:21 pm
foreign policy chief just a bit earlier frederica more green a is that they are determined to maintain this deal whether or not the u.s. is is in it now the u.s. is out and they say they will press on in fact we also heard from donald tusk he is the president of the european council saying that next week european leaders intend to meet in brussels to discuss the next step but they are certainly putting on a united front they want to maintain this deal before it from iran that for its part it wants to maintain this deal the question will be how realistic is it and how exactly will this work and there are other questions donald trump for example saying that the u.s. is now going to impose economic sanctions on iran well what will that mean for european businesses france for example has billions of dollars of trade with tehran ever since those sanctions were listed lifted in twenty sixteen how will those new sanctions affect the businesses the europeans have been really trying to grow with iran over the past couple of years and they'll be all the questions as well as to
10:22 pm
how reliable the united states can be as a partner for europe because we've seen now the u.s. pull out of the nuclear deal and donald trump pulling out of the climate deal at the end of last year so i think going forward those european leaders will be meeting in brussels will certainly have a lot to talk about it does call into question the reliability of the united states as a part of europe but what we've seen on the part of europe so far is particularly the french president emanuel is a drive to really persevered with the relationship and to try and persuade donald trump and clearly that hasn't worked how how much concern is there over there about some serious fractures in the transatlantic alliance going forward. well i think it's still early days but there is no doubt that the message was from the french president when he tweeted very shortly after that announcement by donald trump that france germany and the u.k.
10:23 pm
are least united by saying they deeply regret this decision that donald trump has taken him out or might cause just two weeks ago when he was in the united states in washington on a state visit he in fact left of that state visit saying he thought it was quite likely the trump would pull out of this deal so it's not exactly a surprise but there is no doubt there's a great sense of disappointment in france amongst those many people here who work very hard on that deal and those who really try to preserve it and none more so than the french president who over the past few months has really taken the european lead in trying to persuade an urge donald trump to stay in this deal saying that it is the best deal that there is out there that it is stopping iran from developing nuclear weapons that it is bringing some form of peace and stability ceremonial markhor also nurturing a very close relationship with the u.s. president in order to try and influence him in particular on this deal and perhaps there will be some in france who will say that some are cross diplomatic efforts
10:24 pm
have failed at least on that front all right well thanks very much international in paris we're now joined by our senior political analyst maran bashar. marwan one thing we've seen with this decision just contrasting reactions coming in from israel saudi arabia america's european allies but just picking up on on the point that natasha was making there how much is this going to sort of up and diplomacy as we know it because to some extent is really does hurt america's european allies on this side of russia and china i'm sure that's on the surface there's a lot of anger beyond regret and disappointment from the american decision to walk away from the nuclear deal and i think president mcgraw's tweets were a bit too elegant than a bit too diplomatic. and if he insists on being trump's aarons boy and
10:25 pm
continuously trying to fix things after trump basically destroys them as he did with the nuclear deal that's basically up to him but i think europeans in general i think u.n. security council members like russia and china would not be as would be decent as mccrone will be in dealing with what they what they now define as america's threats to the national security and order by basically walking away from an international agreement like the iran nuclear deal. we have seen saudi arabia and the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu very much welcoming this decision could this embolden saudi arabia and israel in their own competition with iran in the middle east and look let's just all agree a crystal some simple facts before don't trump became president the only thing he knew about the middle east was airports golf courses and some rich gulf the tenants
10:26 pm
in his golden followers that's that's as much as he knew about the middle east so whatever he got to know was from the three the zionists that worked for him including his son and lo and the one who became actually his ambassador to israel mr friedman and his international envoy getting bought and in us for as from the middle east the only thing he actually learned about the middle east is from saudi arabia and israel and saudi arabia basically incited against iran and enticed trump who is quite greedy you know when it comes to business doing business and so on so forth with hundreds of billions of commitments of contracts in order to get trump on board against iran so it's not that saudi arabia and israel supports trump against iran it's trump. embracing israeli and so would the mindset against iran and the danger here is that
10:27 pm
previously american administrations looked at the region whether it was the so-called off shore balancing or confrontations or tensions between various regional partners and they try to weigh and calm the situations but when the united states itself acts like an israel when the united states itself acts like a saudi arabia or basically you could kiss the region goodbye. thanks very much around the sheriff and now we do have much more to come for you on the program including. i mean his new prime minister is given a hero's welcome to a mass rally in the country's capital. love it uses three new cracks in the ground in hawaii destroying more homes and engulfing stranded vehicles.
10:28 pm
with. and over the heat is now being chased out of europe and certainly being very warm recently but now we're seeing more in the way of cloud just affect us in the northwest this is just quite a week feature but you can see this large bank of cloud up towards the northwest that's what's rolling in for wednesday that's going to give us some heavy rain and some pretty strong winds as well as that makes its way across us will see a real drop in the temperatures so force on thursday london will only be getting to seventy of paris will be up at sixteen that is that weather system then making its way across the central parts of europe on thursday for the east though still very warm here warsaw up at twenty eight degrees that's eighty two in fahrenheit but as well as being caught for many of us there will also be a few rumbles of thunder and if you catch a shower it could well turn out to be very heavy for the other side of the mediterranean there's a good deal of cloud here that's gradually rolling its way towards the northeast
10:29 pm
and as it does so it's going to drag up the temperatures as well so forcing cairo will see the temperature all the way up at forty degrees on thursday so really very hot for us meanwhile towards the northwest ten is still not that hot we're looking at nineteen in a row back to the still a good deal of clatter out of some of us in possum rocko and area and they could just squeeze out one or two more showers as we head through the next few days. one of the really special things about working for al-jazeera is that even as a camera woman i get to have so much empathy and contribution to a story a feel we cover this region better than anyone else would be what it is you know it's very true to the body but the field because you have a lot of people that are deployed on political issues. the people believe to tell the real story i'll just men be used to do the work individualism we don't feel included work. across the globe.
10:30 pm
come back a quick look at the top stories u.s. president donald trump has decided to withdraw from the iran nuclear agreement saying the deal is defective at its core and will lead to an arms race in the middle east is also want he will impose the highest level of economic sanctions possible iran's president hassan rouhani says as a short time to negotiate with other world powers to keep the nuclear deal in place the president says france germany and the u.k. regret the u.s. decision to leave the deal he says they'll now work collectively to make a new broad agreement. for more on this go to paul brennan
10:31 pm
who joins us from berlin and i think there's been some reaction from german foreign ministry officials saying that they wish to continue implementing the deal as long as iran holds up its side of the bargain. yeah i mean yes there's been a. joint statement from the germans the french and the u.k. and i'll say that today the germans have sent high ranking diplomatic officials to brussels where they have met with colleagues from the u.k. and france and the european external advisory service and the iranian deputy foreign minister in brussels today this was ahead of president truman's meeting to try to work out what the response might be and how they might move forward after president trumps announcement now it's clear that the germans allies want to continue with the deal with iran even if america wants to pull out the statement
10:32 pm
that's been issued said that our governments remain committed to ensuring the agreement is upheld and will work for all the remaining parties to the deal to ensure it remains the case including ensuring the continuing economic benefits to the iranian people that are linked to the agreement that refers to ongoing business deals that have been springing up since the twenty fifteen deal was struck the hope that they believe is that by keeping the economic benefits rolling towards iran iran could be persuaded not to follow suit with america and rip up the deal and there are concerned about the consequences the knock on effects of european fans and banks doing business with iran what is the latest on that. well this is the problem just as these three countries are getting together saying they hope to continue that iran will feel the economic benefit of abiding by the g
10:33 pm
c p a america the us administration is letting it be known that they will impose sanctions on any company that does business with iran the new national security advisor president trump john bolton has said that companies now have one hundred eighty days to start winding down their business contacts with iran and if after one hundred eighty days from now they continue to be doing business with iran they will face sanctions so it's going to have a dramatic chilling effect regardless of what the germans the u.k. and france are saying to continue business not quite as normal but certainly to try to continue business the u.s. is very clearly telling european companies you go anywhere near iran we're going to have our treasury department and department of justice land on you from a very great height it's very difficult to see how they can reconcile the two sides and i think that the threat of iran being economically isolated once again is very .
