most extensive and longest israeli counterattack against both the rain and it seems syrian targets inside syria in what is being months of mounting tensions on israel's northern border as as you say months of mounting tensions how are people on the ground who are living in these areas reacting to all of this. well they have been told in recent days to prepare for such an eventuality the israeli military gave a briefing to no clues or media at the beginning of this week saying that. intelligence suggestions that iran may be planning a response to what took place last month and has been taking place repeatedly especially on april ninth there was an attack attributed to israel which struck in iranian base the tea for base southwest of damascus. about nine iranian soldiers were killed and then in the minutes after donald trump speech on tuesday
5:07 am
night there was another strike or series of strikes again attributed to israel. various reports suggest that again single figures but a large sizable number of. military personnel were killed in that strike as well so there has been some kind of a response being expected by the israeli military that's why they told mccool parties to open. bomb shelters for the public in northern israel that's why presumably during the course of wednesday these are the new closed off roads along the border and made a controlled military zone the question is whether this escalates from here the military again in that briefing suggesting that they expected something relatively limited targeted military israeli military targets not very civilians presumably to prevent this escalating further that now that such an exchange is underway of course is becoming extremely unpredictable and restoration is always
5:08 am
a possibility of course having all of this is coming against the backdrop of the escalation in rhetoric between iran and the u.s. and in the region because the u.s. has of course pulled out of the iran nuclear deal. that's right there are all sorts of regional and international factors in this week's got the u.s. pulling out of the deal on tuesday night with that speech by donald trump the immediate response coming from iran through. president rouhani was relatively muted although of course hugely critical of united states saying that iran would maintain for now its place in the jaycee period the iran nuclear deal and see what would eventually eight trying to calm fears in on the iranians about the effect on the economy in the currency and so on. the israelis. responded to the pull out entirely differently saying that this was something
5:09 am
they've been arguing for of course for a long time israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu has been advocating this saying that the iran nuclear deal would not prevent iran from getting nuclear weapons there's been talk of the potential for some kind of further confrontation with iran in the short of. this one is that we've had. traveling to moscow because of course there is a sizeable russian presence inside syria as well we had a lengthy talks to understand with russian president vladimir putin on wednesday after which he said that he had no reason to believe that there would be any russian attempt to. interfere with israel's freedom of action within syria and of course that is now being tested to a very large extent with these these clashes are a force of life for us in jerusalem thanks very much indeed let me bring in jamie he's director of the center for middle east studies at the university of denver he's joining us on skype from there thank you very much indeed for your time let me ask you about the position that russia now finds itself in because it's how i was
5:10 am
saying it of course as an ally of iran it also has in the past had very good relations with israel is there any role that it will be expected to play or be likely to play in trying to find some sort of solution to this situation. well if this escalates then the only country in the world that has diplomatic relations with all of the key players is russia and so they do have they've situated themselves. actually quite brilliantly from moscow's perspective to play the role of kingmaker here if they choose to do so. i don't think that russia's fundamental intervention in the region in syria will in the end be good for regional stability but if you look at the one country in the world that actually can step in and has diplomatic relations with all of the countries that are involved in these risk and at risk in recent escalation it's russian of course as we know if syria is
5:11 am
fractured it's not simply a question of one side against another what is the risk to think that whatever this this this tension between syria and iran and israel exists that some of the actors on the ground some of the armed groups on the ground should could take advantage of that and we could see a real ignition of fighting in some areas that had at least temporarily town down. i think those two things are actually very disconnected i think the clashes that we're seeing right now between israel and iran in the middle east and the internal conflict within syria are really two separate. conflicts that are taking place i don't think israel the united states or for that matter of course the islamic republic of iran really care very much about the syrian people and i think these days two things are happening in parallel and they don't necessarily overlap the other overwhelming reality is that much of the you know rebel opposition in syria has been crushed as
5:12 am
a result of the brutality of the assad regime that by russia and iran so the chance of a flare up in any part of syria i think you know is significantly reduced now particularly after the conquest of east ghouta given the situation that we're covering at the moment what is the risk that we're going to see an escalation in this and it's going to spill out. i think that risk is quite you know significant and i think the big turning point was donald trump's speech yesterday which could have been written by benjamin netanyahu i think there is a plan in place between washington israel and saudi arabia to to really try and go after iran in the region to provoke a conflict with iran and we're seeing this happening before our eyes iran is most weakest in terms of its position in syria and i think the plan very much here is to trying to go to iran into over responding which will then allow either israel or the united states to you know hit iran very hard. in syria or in other parts of the
5:13 am
middle east where it has a presence so i think this is a very ominous development i think there this signifies particular donald trump speech is the first sort of attempt to pursue a new foreign policy toward iran that breaks sharply with what president obama was pursuing and to really pursue in some form or another a military conflict with iran possibly leading to you know regime change i think that's very much the hope of the of the advisers that donald trump has surrounded himself with given the current circumstance which of course stress that the only information we're getting at the moment is from the syrian state media and from the israelis that we've yet to try to get more confirmation of that of course will be coming in as they are as go by but let me ask you in terms of the nuclear deal is this going to create further tension between the other signatories of the nuclear deal and the u.s. will those signatories be pointing to this type of incident and suggest that it is
5:14 am
that pulling out of the deal that is at least in part to blame for this well i think it will i think this is one of the reasons why many people were supportive of the nuclear deal because there was a sense that it least it would not resolve all of the problems in the middle east at least diminish to those. those tensions and those problems and i think the plan also here from the israeli and the american side is to provoke an iranian xin overreacting attacking possibly israeli military sites or even civilian targets within israel which then would make it very difficult for the europeans to stay in a deal with iran if you ron is going after israel that would be i think a lot on red line for europe and then that would effectively mean that the deal will be officially over if you're pulls out so i think you know we are witnessing a very dangerous and allman is developing and and i think this is not an accident
5:15 am
this is a deliberate calculation a deliberate plan coming out donald trump's foreign policy advisers and closely coordinated with israel and saudi arabia to to start a major conflict with the islamic republic of iran. then i say we thank you very much indeed for your opinion on that well there's been a lot of different deadlines put forward by the us about why they could impose sanctions on iran it may happen it says as early as next week the u.s. move has been widely criticized from london to attack iran from where is and best avi has this report. the day after the united states tore up the nuclear deal iran set it on fire members of parliament into one burned a printout of the international pact and the american flag a show of anger and disappointment over what they say is a mistake by washington i doubt all right all you more him miss nettled if europe an important countries like russia and china fill this international vacuum perhaps that will be
5:16 am
a way to continue otherwise the islamic republic of iran will bring the us to its senses with its nuclear actions they have to know that under such circumstances iran has no commitment to remain in the nuclear position it was in before. iranians woke up to headlines that highlight the country's internal divisions moderates who are currently in government want the deal to go on without trouble hardliners stress the united states cannot be trusted and the agreement should be completely scrapped but both sides are bracing for an economic impact so short of. the withdrawal means more pressure will be exerted on the people and the country will go back to the days of resorting to smuggling to bring in goods and bypass sanctions i on wednesday iran's supreme leader ayatollah ali khamenei drew a line in the sand show needed. go hard for you all heard last night the cheap and impudent remarks of the u.s. president there were maybe more than ten lies most he says he threesome both the
5:17 am
establishment and the iranian nation that he will do this and that and i will tell him on behalf of the iranian people mr trump you don't like hell you will i while there is a sliver of hope for the deal to survive come and he said he knows iran is asking to remain signatories for the impossible to stand by iran and ignore the global financial threat posed by the united states has. now said that the agreement will stay in place with participation of the three european countries i do not trust these three countries. i. i while the full impact of renewed sanctions had yet to materialize on iranian streets traditional chants of death to america are getting louder once again perhaps the clearest sign of iran's anger was a message from the supreme leader to the american president in it he said that many u.s. presidents have died in their bones that decomposed and the trunk too will return

independence so many years ago so nobody really understands what steps need to be taken to transfer power to a nother party but my head here is at the helm of that ass he was at the helm of the bars on national for a decade so people are looking to him and expecting him to somehow not only devise as he said a new way of doing things but also bring together a large number of coalitions that supported him in this run against governments and these coalitions include ethnic minorities and a lot of groups in opposition members that might there he himself had once jailed when he was prime minister when he was trying to oust the opposition so regardless everyone is watching with great curiosity as to how he's going to handle this him accusing his former protege of ruling without an iron fist with an authoritarian

hand a ruling which he had kind of sets up and a president that he had originally said when he was prime minister. thanks very much indeed mollies a researcher and writer on southeast asian politics and she's joining us now from come. on scott thanks very much indeed for being with us. let's let me just ask you very quickly given the fact that this came as a surprise to a great many people how likely is it that the incoming party is actually going to be able to form any sort of government. well i mean like your correspondent just said just now actually nobody really knows what to do now is the likelihood is a little bit difficult to measure what i can see so much is that there's been claims range imo there for example that he's going to go to the palace and he's going to seek an audience with the king to sieges assent to form a new governments and the regime is a constitutional monarchy so the head of state you know just have to have some kind
5:27 am
of sign off process as haven't been activated but also obviously there hasn't been an opposition you know come to power after winning government in an election in the nation's entire history as an independent nation so we're going to need to watch i noticed that you know after martyrs announcement that he was going to the palace that the palace basically responders saying that it was an official in but they basically didn't know if it was going to happen. you know potentially there's going to be a little bit of this today a bit of back and forth attempts to get moving on things to form government but at the same time you know a few days i just don't think that it's very clear what's going to happen right now i know is that the opposition coalition that is claiming to have won has already started to circulate images of its future cabinet so i guess they're doing what they can to you know to ensure confidence muhammad is at the forefront of a four party coalition and that includes militias largest ethnic chinese party is
5:28 am
still planning to step aside once the defacto opposition leader gets out of jail is there any confidence that he's actually going to be able to hold that coalition together long enough to actually make a difference. well what they say is that they're going to get to work right away change the way business is done the business of government so they are saying that they're going to work with him with those couple of years of the term to take away some of their power that has been concentrated in the position of prime minister and that's power by the way that they're himself concentrated in the position of prime minister when he was prime minister twenty two years until two thousand and three so are you saying that they know how to hold it together they're saying they have a plan in place state governments together you know with a few ups and downs but ultimately they've been running canadian states some time now so there are precedents for how to cooperate because they haven't had my their and his new party in the coalition before but actually in many ways. that's been

prime minister mahathir mohamad will once again be back in the top job replacing. the us could really impose sanctions on iran as early as next week to ensure it does not develop nuclear weapons and follows america's withdrawal from a landmark deal that limited iran's nuclear capabilities iran's supreme leader has accused the u.s. president of lying. ok let's get you more now on those developments in the golan heights where israel and iran have been fighting it out over the last few hours the israeli military said iranian forces in syria fired rockets at their positions in the golan heights later israeli warplanes set to have fired at syrian military bases and an arms deputy white house press secretary said saunders has been speaking about the rising tensions between the two countries. are there shows that the iranian regime cannot be trusted israel absolutely has a sovereign right to defend itself and we support them in whatever efforts they
5:34 am
have in order to defend themself but again i think this activity in this action is just further demonstration that the iranian regime cannot be trusted in another good reminder that the president made the right decision to get out of the iran deal hillary mann leverett is a former white house national security official she's joining us now from washington d.c. on skype thank you very much indeed for your time hillary we should point out of course that information we're getting about this latest incident is coming from israel and from syria we haven't heard anything yet from iran but in your view what's the risk that this is going to escalate. i think the risk is high and we've been seeing and hearing now for days even even weeks here in washington that the israelis are concerned they're worried about an imminent attack by iran or running back back forces in syria but there's been very little evidence that we've been
5:35 am
hearing rumors of it we've been hearing rumors that the israelis have this or that piece of evidence but we haven't seen anything so certainly here in washington there's been all eyes and ears are in the situation there to see what's you know what will really happen but we haven't seen a lot of evidence it would seem that one of the catalysts that people are going to point to rightly or wrongly will be the u.s. pullout from the nuclear deal do you think that that is reasonable to assume that iran has used that as some sort of spark if you like to take this in this kind of action if it is true that iran has been firing these missiles. i think there's no evidence first that iran has fired these missiles that i've seen and i that i know that if anybody is seen here in the washington area and i also don't think there's really any evidence that the iranians would do that i don't think they're all that concerned about these really the american pullout from the iran nuclear deal that
5:36 am
they would resort to attacking israel they understand what the stakes are and i think they understand too that they have the high ground they have the high world political and economic ground in this you know in with what's happening with the united states they have so far the europeans on their side the russians the chinese to attack israel right now i think would serve no iranian purpose and i see no evidence whatsoever that the iranians have planned prepared or taking any credit for this in any way given as you say that iran appears to have as you put it the moral high ground in this case do you think that we're going to see a wider pressure on the u.s. to try to fix this problem from those other signatures for example all of the nuclear deal. perhaps the way i think my understanding from the various european delegations that have come to washington in the past few weeks is that they they really i think they've given up hope they can convince the tribal ministration
5:37 am
staying doing anything constructive. for this for the foreseeable future and i think you'll see the opposite come out of washington and there will be i think more and more aggressive tactics these are the iran and more backing for israel for saudi arabia for others that have a religion against iran to try to stir anxieties and perhaps even realize attacks like we're seeing today in syria to blame on iran just further justify president transactions human level to thank you very much indeed for your time let's return now to the u.s. as pullout from the iran nuclear deal washington says it could really impose sanctions on tehran next week fitzpatrick is the director of the nonproliferation program at the international institute for strategic studies and he's joining us now from washington d.c. thanks very much for being with us let me first ask you about this latest incident that's been happening around the golan heights and also in the syria hillary mann
5:38 am
leverett was suggesting that iran may not regard the u.s. pulling out of the nuclear deal is reason enough to carry out an attack on israel do you agree. i agree and i think what she had to say was very relevant that first of all there's no evidence clearly that this is from iran but there would be other reasons that iran would have attacked israel you know in retaliation for the israeli. strikes against the t four base that killed seventy iranian revolutionary guards that was about two and a half weeks ago and i think it's it's at least logical to think that the iranians would have been biding their time and waiting for a period to respond with the nuclear deal to iran will respond. but we don't know when we don't know how it'll probably be asymmetric and it'll be at a time and a place of their choosing not necessarily an attack on israel but something else that might harm american interests on that basis are you talking about some sort of
5:39 am
military activity or are you talking about a cyber attack for example which it was carried out before or is it more likely to be political. i think it could be an all of the romance that you've just mentioned cyber is a natural one because it's hard to attribute military attacks i think are very natural because of the feeling of the iranian revolutionary guards. you know they've been victorious they've been expanding their influence america has done something that's been insulting to iran and they mean may be very willing to to take action where they may see an advantage but political is probably more likely and also in the nuclear realm iran will probably. turn up the dial on its uranium enrichment turned down the cooperation with i.a.e.a. inspectors they have to show some response they can't be seen to be taking it
5:40 am
without standing up to the bully as they perceive the united states the u.s. has said that it may bring in sanctions against iran within a matter of days in practical terms given the opposition that it faces how likely is that do you think. i think it's actually likely although the actual imposition of any fines would take some time the trumpet ministrations position is more hardline than many people thought president trump's speech yesterday showed no middle ground no gray area that some had been expecting that he might give the europeans a couple more months to try to find a way to bridge the differences with the united states and impose more limits on iran he didn't go for that at all it was sanctions right now in the u.s. ambassador to germany told german firms they better get out of iran now even firms
5:41 am
that are there quite legitimately the pressure is ratcheting up pretty quickly pretty sternly and rhetoric is one thing mark isn't it but enforcing the sanctions is quite another what kind of hurdles could the u.s. face. so there are several hurdles that they could face i think the europeans will try to put up as many hurdles as they can to protect their industry they could try to arrange for all transactions to be done through the euro currency not touching the american dollar so they wouldn't be affected by american financial measures but the problem is that most european firms that are involved in international trade with iran also have a footprint in the united states and they won't want to jeopardize that so the united states doesn't have to impose any fines any penalties at all but through informal pressure many firms will just stop doing business with iran out of
5:42 am
business prudence and that's going to be problematic for the survival of the nuclear deal mark fitzpatrick is director of the nonproliferation program at the international institute for strategic studies thanks very much indeed. three americans freed from prison in north korea have entered u.s. airspace synergy to touch down in maryland in the next few hours earlier their plane landed in alaska for refueling president donald trump took to twitter to say he looks forward to greeting the hostages from hydro castro in washington d.c. . the three americans released from north korea have issued a statement aboard the airplane now carrying them home and they say we would like to express our deep appreciation to the united states government president secretary and the people of the united states for bringing us home we thank god and all our families and friends who prayed for us and for our return god bless america the greatest nation in the world now this plane carrying these three men as well as
