israel says it's destroyed nearly all of iran's military infrastructure in syria in a wave of overnight strikes it's in retaliation to alleged iranian attacks on israeli positions in the occupied golan heights with the prime minister benjamin netanyahu warning iran that it had crossed a red line tehran has yet to respond officially but senior iranian politicians have denied that iran was behind the attacks we're going to have more on iran's reaction reaction in just a moment but we begin our coverage with harry forsett from the occupied golan heights. cockpit video from israeli warplanes is they carried out the largest and most prolonged strike in syria since the start of its civil war israel says it hit dozens of iranian military targets as well as five syrian anti-aircraft installations israel says it was a response after iranian forces launched twenty rockets at israeli targets in the
12:03 am
occupied golan heights we have made it very clear that we are here to defend ourselves those who started this round of violence were the ring ins who attacked israel we responded accordingly and we are now waiting to see how the iranians will respond israeli forces in the occupied golan heights who are on alert for any further response at the same time local residents were told to go about their business as normal schools were open no restrictions placed on large gatherings israel says of the twenty rockets that were fired towards the occupied golan heights from syrian territory they all either fell in syrian territory or they were intercepted what followed was a massive and prolonged response from the israeli armed forces a real escalation in the kind of force that israel has so far been prepared to use within syria it's a message to deter any further such action and it's also making the most of an opportunity to do as much damage to rein in forces as possible israel's government has long warned of a growing threat from iranian bases and missiles inside syria it seems to have
12:04 am
decided to act sooner rather than later. we have of course hit all the infrastructure not all but almost all of the iranian infrastructure in syria they must remember the saying if it rains here it will pour over there and i hope that we finish this chapter and that everyone got the message. syrian state media said syrian air defenses it inserted most of the incoming rockets over the capital damascus but also confirmed that a radar station and a weapons storage site was struck. with iranian state television said syria had given a quote crushing response to the israeli attacks the strikes were carried out hours after israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu was in moscow saying he'd come away confident that russia would not prevent what he called israel's freedom of action a day later a different tone from the russian foreign minister. that we see this is a very alarming development we believe that all issues must be resolved through
12:05 am
dialogue during our multiple contacts with the leadership of both iran and israel including during yesterday's meeting between putin and netanyahu we underline the necessity of avoiding any actions that might be seen as mutually provocative. for now this latest flurry of cross border violence has subsided but all sides are aware that a new bar has been set for its intensity and that it could all too easily rise again harry force at al-jazeera in the occupied golan heights so the latest there the golan heights let's get more now on iran's response to the israeli action as ravi is monitoring developments from tehran. senior leaders in tehran were silent in the immediate aftermath of cross border strikes between syria and israel that israel blamed on iran instead we heard from m.p.'s members of iran's parliamentary commission on national security and foreign policy an influential body of government in the country one m.p. flatly denied iran's involvement saying it was syria rightfully responding to
12:06 am
repeated attacks by israel another m.p. speaking to the homage of a jamali said that israel was fabricating the nature of iran's involvement in the country. in accordance with international laws we have a presence in syria but there is no specific iranian military base that we may have a presence in some syrian bases for kind of consultative training so israel's claim is devoid of truth jamal he also had a warning for israel saying that the days when countries in the region did not respond to acts of israeli aggression are over moyock so much as we have a remark from the supreme leader that the era of hits in iran has gone before the iranian revolution and even until recently israel attacked syria several times bombed them bombed military bases to avoid direct tool syria chose self-preservation even iraq in the saddam era israel hit the atomic power plants whenever the zionists wanted they would break the sonic wall and attack the south of lebanon syria iraq and other countries so far they haven't seen any response but
12:07 am
recently they saw the f. sixteen shut down syria stood firm despite being weakened by seven years of civil war so because of that they have been considerably frustrated they are accustomed to being invaded and they never receive response be sure that if confrontation occurs surely the country who would be damaged the most is the zionist regime jamali added that he hoped that actions taken by israel by launching missiles at syria would eventually result in the liberation of the golan heights very strong words coming from iran's parliament and no matter what iran senior leaders say in coming days two things are certain that this represents a dangerous escalation of the syrian conflict where iran is heavily committed and it comes at a sensitive time in the region when iran is backed into a corner with the devolution of the nuclear deal earlier this week. send us ravi from tehran there will stephen miles's of the rector of the win without war group at the center for international policy joins us live now from washington d.c.
12:08 am
sir welcome to al-jazeera so we've seen there this as collation of intensity in the attacks between israel and iran over syria obviously the timing comes just what over twenty four hours since the u.s. president pulled out of the uranium nuclear deal how linked to do you think the two are i mean obviously it's not a coincidence but what do you think the cause and effect is here whether you're absolutely right there is clearly not a coincidence here i think the words from the the story we just heard were absolutely spot on we're in a dangerous moment the iran deal for its greatest achievement was that it took the united states iran and indeed israel back from the brink of war and what we're seeing now is that tearing that deal up has put those parties right back right back on the brink to war and not just the brink to war i mean there are some reports that the u.s. and israel may actually be sort of acting together it's no secret that certainly new members of the trumpet ministration in israel wants regime change in tehran so
12:09 am
arguably the u.s. would take the economic angle and we could see israel perhaps putting military pressure on iran what do you think that would what do you think that would lead to especially would you think the iranian response to that would be. well there we have to be clear the iranians are unlikely to have no response to the kinds of provocations and the attacks that we're seeing right now in syria obviously these attacks over the last twenty four hours have been the largest that we've seen in decades but the israelis have been repeatedly attacking or reining in positions in syria for quite some time now throughout the last several years in fact before those missile attacks from syria on the golan there was israeli attacks preceding that on iranian positions we're entering the cycle of tit for tat escalation where both parties both sides are claiming they're the aggrieved claiming they're the victims of the other's aggression we have to be alarmed about where we're heading and you're absolutely right we have now this potential between the hawks in the in
12:10 am
the forces that we're seeing in the donald trump administration folks like john bolton folks like mike pump aoe that have openly talked about war with iran repeatedly in the past we have to be wondering what they're saying to their israeli counterparts right now in a way that the game changer country in syria has for a long time. and again talking about timing what's been really interesting is that benjamin netanyahu was literally speaking to the russians again less than a day before this happened then you know saying i think his phrase was given the ok for freedom of action by israel i mean we heard the russians sound a bit more cautious but russia's role here is key are they going to let an escalation happen in syria. i think it remains to be seen obviously russia is deeply invested in the assad regime and in their position in syria russia has a tremendous amount of military assets syrian air defenses really depend on russian military on the anti aircraft missiles that they're operating there mostly have taken as we have you said a standoff position of these types of escalations but going forward russia's
12:11 am
acquiescence to this kind of incursion by the israelis is going to be crucial and it's hard to see any situation where russia doesn't play a vital role and very briefly if you can because we're a bit short of time i mean we've seen a proxy war in syria for years and using it as a realistic chance that we're going to see an actual direct war no more not not a civil war anymore but an actual war between nations over syria what we have to be very concerned about that and we should start with the reality that for the people of syria who have suffered for years and years to this horrific war the events of the last twenty four hours have only indicated that more suffering is on the horizon what we really need now is a major intervention by the international parties but one that is diplomatic and is focused on ending the kind of hostility we've seen and indeed ending the larger war and bringing an end to the human suffering seven miles from the win without war group at the center for international policy sir thank you now donald trump has

confirmed that the date and the venue for an historic summit with north korea's leader the president announced it on twitter saying the highly anticipated meeting between kim jong un and myself will take place in singapore on june the twelfth we will both try to make make it a very special moment for world peace well let's go live now to hide the castro who is in washington for us so we have a date we have a location why singapore. hi barbara so single poor is seen as a natural fit for the trouble ministration it's a neutral territory it hosts both the u.s. navy a presence there as well as an embassy of north korea it is also proven to be experienced in hosting this type of high stakes bilateral talks in two thousand and fifteen singapore hosted the leaders of china and taiwan in that historic summit and it's not too far from north korea it is about five thousand kilometers would still be the furthest that north korea's leader kim jong un has traveled from home to north
12:13 am
korea has appeared to offer a list of concessions favorable to the u.s. side of negotiations leading up to the arrangement of the summit it has said that it is willing to stop testing of its nuclear and ballistic missiles programs that it is willing to tolerate the presence of u.s. troops on the korean peninsula and of course we saw in recent days the release of those three american prisoners who are now back home in the united states now the big question is what will north korea want in return from the u.s. at this point there is no indication of what that list will be president trump is said to be preparing to enter this summit meeting on june twelfth with the attitude to find out what north korea's intentions are in a statement from the white house just today saying that the president's main priority for that summit is north korea's complete verifiable and irreversible denuclearize ation
12:14 am
a tall order indeed barbara. starr with the latest from washington d.c. heidi thank you. was mentioning there trump's tweet came just hours after he welcomed back three u.s. citizens who were released from jail in north korea can be how kate was at andrews air force base. back in the united states it's been more than a year since kim hacksawing and tony kim have seen their. families for kim don shula it's been even longer he was imprisoned in north korea two years ago forced to do hard labor after being convicted of espionage speaking through a translator kim described his treatment in north korea forced to work but also treated well when sick. we were treated in many different ways for me i had to do a lot of labor but when i got sick i was also created by. the release of the three americans being viewed by the white house as
12:15 am
a goodwill gesture by north korea's leader water back here who really. was. excellent to these three incredible people they are really three incredible people the release of the three americans is the product of negotiations ongoing with the united states and north korea but it is also a prelude to the upcoming summit between donald trump and north korean leader kim jong a summit that trump says he hopes will yield even greater results trump says his primary goal is to achieve complete denuclearization of the korean peninsula is looking forward to his upcoming summit mike pump aoe has made two trips to north korea it's during his most recent visit that kim reportedly accepted the u.s. proposal to grant amnesty to the three detainees kimberly help at al-jazeera andrews air force base. so much more to come here on the news hour including ninety

cope the kenyan red cross is describing the floods which started in march a national disaster it says that aside from all the lives lost the number of people now homeless has reached three hundred thousand and two simmons al-jazeera there is a county in kenya. ok now let's bring you the story of nora hussein a young sudanese woman who's been sentenced to death for killing her husband nora story begins when she was sixteen she fled her family home near her two to escape a marriage forced upon her by her father for three years she lived with that and then focused on getting an education but when she was nineteen she was tricked into returning home and then forced to marry a few days later her husband raped her with the help of his relatives who held her down and when he returned again the next night to repeat the act nora fought back stabbing him several times and eventually killing him her case has attracted
12:20 am
widespread attention and social media with the campaign justice for nora now trending on twitter all joining us from new york is yasmin has sun she is the global executive director of the activist group equality now the group is working on a petition calling for justice for nora thank you so much for joining us here on al-jazeera to discuss this terrible case i mean we keep on referring to this man as her husband but really he's a rapist i mean she never wanted to marry him in the first place but ultimately under sudanese law marital rape isn't a crime which presumably is why she has been convicted of murder. yes that's absolutely correct but sudanese lower the constitution also provides full full and free consent to marriage and that is what we're arguing she never gave her consent to marriage in this case. this is a travesty of justice from every angle that you can look at and it also shows all the various steps in which sudanese laws and policy failed this young girl who had
12:21 am
a very bright future ahead of her from the aspect of child marriage sudanese law allows girls right after puberty to be married off by their father this allows phone no marital rape exemption there's no medical rape recognized under the law the girl has to be obedient to a husband so there's not so fast specs of the law that are called in to challenge by this case the case is a very very hard one under sudanese bill but when you look at it from a human rights aspect in many many other countries of the world this would be looked at as a victim and would be provided services and care as opposed to being you know put in solitary confinement and given the death penalty so we are appealing to the president to the legislature to the ministry of justice on behalf of sudanese activists and international human rights groups that no neuron must be freed and this case must be looked at so i think this is also and the hope that i get here sorry please go i'm. so the hope that i have here is that
12:22 am
we have had a previous case four years ago in sudan where a young ethiopian woman was gang raped and the know at that time provided that if you couldn't prove your rape you were going to be flogged and guilty of fornication and adultery and we got together with sudanese activists and that time bad nor was changed and so the rape provisions were amended and back movement did get justice so i'm hopeful that justice will prevail in numerous cases and i'm hopeful that with international media attention with international human rights groups and sudanese activists all working together we can get there for. the international attention is there now the twitter campaign is gathering steam is people like you supporting her but interestingly when she was in court her own family has owned her so she was alone in court she didn't have the family support and her husband stroke rapist's family could have had monetary compensation but actually want her to be
12:23 am
sentenced so it's interesting i mean you mentioned that parts of sudanese law actually aren't her favor but it seems that it's still a cultural barrier there is very difficult to to get over in many parts of the world. and the laws are in conflict so at one on the one side the law says a male guardian marries off a girl or a woman and on the other hand the constitution says full and free consent is required for each marriage rights and there's that aspect and then we have the aspect of her family the the man's family being able to forgive her which i was hoping they would be able to do it's the same family or demand but they have demanded execution so this appeal is going to be a hard appeal i know that a meeting this saturday she has a team of four and figuring out what the best defense is what i'm hearing is that they are going to go for second degree murder charges which still carry five to ten years punishment but we're hoping that the international community can pressurize
12:24 am
the government and can really look at this case and get noura off free and get her the care that she needs right now. i mean all this attention now there's a petition on change the org the twitter i mean how much does that actually impact on the people that ultimately make that the signal norah's future in life but really a lot of women like her around the world. yes the danger but the thing is if people are not aware people can speak out and i have seen even in countries like iran and in sudan international attention has helped in drawing the focus because i don't think any governmental needs to own wants to look very very bad in the international community so i think that the attention cannot hurt in this case but we have to do it with a look at what how it's nora as opposed to what how it's the international human rights community saw focus really in this case has to be on this dog getting how fussed out of the death penalty situation and then getting her free yes and i think
12:25 am
i'm going we can all do that together by talking about this js and shining a spotlight or let's certainly hope so there's fifteen days now within which there can you know her appeal there could be an appeal against her conviction so let's certainly hope for the best for the moment he has made her son a global executive director from the activist group equality now thank you so much for having joined us thank you so much for having. muhsin muhammad has been sworn in as well asia's prime minister following his unexpected election win here previously government and the eighty's and ninety's thursday's win makes him the oldest elected leader in the world when hate reports. it was a long day for mahathir mohamad has he waited to be sworn in by the king of malaysia as prime minister for the second time the serum he was expected the morning after the election but following apparent delays it happened a few minutes before ten in the evening so. mild

12:33 am
to the also of the report amy capek's joins us live now from new york city thank you so much for joining us here on al-jazeera about him so first of all why do you think that these types of attacks have become more widespread. well thank you very much for highlighting this incredibly important issue there are a few reasons that we found in the report that these attacks have become widespread in some countries the first reason is the rising rising extremist violence and in particular the rise of the islamic state and groups affiliated with these state in fact we did find attacks by islamic is the islamic state and its affiliates in twelve countries in the report another reason is the willingness of governments to use airstrikes and in particular to use airstrikes in civilian civilian areas which damages civilian infrastructure including education a third reason is the communal rising communal conflict and
12:34 am
a fourth reason is widespread repression at student students and teachers who are protesting and exercising their academic freedom and freedom of expression. you've highlighted so many reasons i guess one of the ones that gets mentioned most the least in the media rightly or wrongly is the attacks against women so i'm thinking of the use of for example the little girl who was shot in the face by the pakistani taliban because she was pursuing an education is that because in lots of parts of the world more women are now getting educated to get education or is it more of a reaction to that well that's a very good question i think it is in part because of a protest possibly because of a push to educate females but we are seeing certainly that there are there is a trend of girls schools and teachers being targeted in particular and i think perhaps
12:35 am
the global movement to promote girls' education could be a contributor to that. so i mean effectively now the question is what can governments actually do about her new do you advocate a sort of safe schools that clear ation what would you advise governments to do well governments can sign up and endorse the safe schools declaration and also implement their commitments the safe schools declaration and calls on governments to prevent the military use of schools and universities as well as to provide education that is prevent protective and preventative and though the declaration really does make a tangible difference we've seen for example governments changing their military doctrines to prevent the military use of schools and universities we've also seen in some countries where attacks on schools are very common like afghanistan or the
