the israeli military says that it destroyed iranian targets in response to rocket attacks against its forces in the occupied golan heights an iranian spokesman called the claims baseless and fabricated kerry forces reports. cockpit video from israeli warplanes is they carried out the largest and most prolonged air strike in syria since the start of its civil war israel says it hit dozens of iranian military targets as well as five syrian anti-aircraft installations israel says it was a response after iranian forces launched twenty rockets at israeli targets in the occupied golan heights we have made it very clear that we are here to defend ourselves those who started this round of violence were hearing ins who attacked israel we responded accordingly and we are now waiting to see how the iranians will respond israeli forces in the occupied golan heights were on alert for any further response at the same time local residents were told to go about their business as normal schools were open no restrictions placed on large gatherings israel says of
11:03 am
the twenty rockets that were fired towards the occupied golan heights from syrian territory they all either fell in syrian territory or they were intercepted what followed was a massive and prolonged response from the israeli armed forces a real escalation in the kind of force that israel has so far been prepared to use within syria it's a message to deter any further such action and it's also making the most of an opportunity to do as much damage to rein in forces as possible israel's government has long warned of a growing threat from iranian bases and missiles inside syria it seems to have decided to act sooner rather than later and. we have of course hit all the infrastructure not all but almost all of the iranian infrastructure in syria they must remember the saying if it rains here it will pour over there and i hope that we finish this chapter and that everyone got the message. syrian

state media said syrian air defenses it inserted most of the incoming rockets over the capital damascus but also confirmed that a radar station and a weapons storage site was struck. with iranian state television said syria had given a quote crushing response to. israeli attacks the strikes were carried out hours after israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu was in moscow saying he'd come away confident that russia would not prevent what he called israel's freedom of action a day later a different tone from the russian foreign minister. that we see this is a very alarming development we believe that all issues must be resolved through dialogue during our multiple contacts with the leadership of both iran and israel including during yesterday's meeting between putin and netanyahu we underline the necessity of avoiding any actions that might be seen as mutually provocative. for now this latest flurry of cross border violence has subsided but all sides are aware that a new bar has been set for its intensity that it could all too easily rise again
11:05 am
are a force at al-jazeera in the occupied golan heights well israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu is threatening further action in syria you have covered bomb iran crossed a red line our response was appropriate the israeli army carried out a broad strike a very broad strike against iranian targets in syria i sent a clear message to the assad regime our action is aimed at to rein in targets in syria but if the syrian army will act against us we will act against it iranian m.p.'s have denied that iran was behind the golan attacks a senior politician has told al jazeera that israel is fabricating the nature of iran's involvement in syria and that its actions will have consequences. that they are accustomed to being invaded and they never receive response be sure that if confrontation occurs surely the country who would be damaged the most is the zionist regime let's go live that. same bus ravi is with us
11:06 am
now so we're hearing more reactions than from senior iranian politicians zain what's the foreign ministry been saying. yes adrian two days after the incident in question we have started hearing from the more senior levels of government the foreign ministry issuing a statement. completely criticizing israel's. incursions into syria criticizing what it says is a violation of international law violation of syrian sovereignty and the state and also criticized what it said was silenced by the global community over the violation of syrian sovereignty by the israeli incursion so a very very different narrative being pushed by the foreign ministry in that statement it also went so far as to suggest that israel as part of its strategic depth in syria was behind or was backing groups like the islamic state and we've had allegations like that from leaders here in iran in the past with regards to
11:07 am
israel's involvement in the country now would have what has to be said it is that what was not said in that statement is as important as what was said no specific reactions to the very specific allegations by israel that it hit a large numbers of iranian targets inside syria and no specific response to the israeli allegation that iran was behind the cross border fire that happened that it was iran who shot first so they are still holding their cards close to the chest here in tehran what are the iranian people making of all of this. well we're going to hear more about that later today almost certainly it's important to point out that we are just days away from when the united states tore up the twenty fifteen nuclear agreement in the aftermath of that in the immediate aftermath we saw some scattered protests around to iran in other cities but the
11:08 am
government did call for nationwide protests today following friday prayers which promised to be rather large government organized rallies tend to be quite popular and quite large here in iran so we're likely going to hear from protesters and to us demonstrations are expected to take place with risp in a response to the tearing up of the nuclear agreement on the diplomatic side or the foreign minister is planning in coming days to begin his. diplomatic tour to try and save what he can for iran from the twenty fifteen nuclear agreement he's due in china in the next couple of days then russia then on words to european capitals to meet with the remaining signatories of the twenty fifteen nuclear agreement saying many thanks i was there was a. wrong box rain a sunni muslim on a key with a large shia population has expressed support for israel's attacks inside syria on twitter the country's foreign minister said that as long as iran has destabilized

next two years but once he's pardoned once he's released from prison and while would then have to go through a byelection process in a seat somewhere in malaysia they would then then have to be an internal vote in his party for him to become party president and only then would he be able to assume the position of prime minister of malaysia kenya's public prosecutor is launching an investigation into what caused a dam to burst killing at least fifty people rescuers are still searching for survivors after rushing water swept away most of the village in the county under simmons reports. it was fast and unforgiving the dam burst released a surge of water that took homes and lives with it there was no warning and it happened in darkness this is the scene hours afterwards they're searching for one of dozens of people many of them children. the sprawl of daybreak is where
11:12 am
families once lived whole homes swept away. from the air you get some idea of the scale of this tragedy the dam is almost fully drained downstream the waves of flood water gain momentum and later spread out inflicting much more devastation over a wider area. thank you for a long stretch from the dump area down stream we are also looking for the families that they were missing hoping that christening. yes charles kim or no already knows he's lost a family member his sister fifty year old nancy moon this was her home. we heard about the flooding came to look for my sister we looked everywhere we only found her body hours after the water receded. bernard mankato works at a village clinic he's trying in vain to clear things up. i lived here
11:13 am
with my colleague there were many houses around us and this is where many people were swept away the dams main purpose was irrigation of a large flower farm investigators will want to know what type of fortifications had been used and other dams in the area are being checked this tragedy has really brought it home just how dangerous these continuing rains are making it for kenyans right across the country the rainfall is the heaviest for two decades and it proves beyond all reasonable doubt that the infrastructure of this country simply can't cope with. the kenyan red cross is describing the floods which started in march a national disaster it says that aside from all the lives lost the number of people now homeless has reached three hundred thousand. and anderson is joining us now
11:14 am
live from. in kenya andrew our thirty's there. any clearer as to what caused this dam to break. well it's you know the end of the day was the sheriff force of the water the bulk the massive amount of water in that reservoir because of these heavy rains but the director of public prosecutions has a lot of the chief of police to mount an investigation he wants a written interim report within two weeks and there are reports in kenyan media that this farm was subject to inspection by the water resources authority and deemed unsafe and was ordered to close now there are question marks about that. that move because there was no follow up to it so why did the authority if it had thought it so dangerous did not follow up with any any orders through the courts
11:15 am
local people were against this reservoir being built in the first place because of the safety standards it's not up to civil engineering proportions when you look at it from the air you can see quite clearly that you don't have reinforced concrete with steel structure or anything to actually contain the reservoir it is basically made out of natural resources such as rocks and cement and bits and pieces and so therefore there are question marks now about seven other dams in the area these are big farms mainly exporting flowers but also to do with exporting mcadam macadamia nuts and also other food stalks as well which include fruits and other of the crops but this is a major farm like many others in the rift valley that is controversial for the way it's using irrigation systems such as this and now look at this disaster and the
11:16 am
devastation it's course what about the number of people still missing after this search and rescue operation is continuing but is there an accurate figure as to how many people remain unaccounted for. well the national disaster team is finding it hard to put an exact figure on this are reliable sources of the county health ministry now quote the number of dead found fifty the latest being a child more than twenty which children amongst those found dead already about on top of that you have at least fourteen missing and that's further down river because the river surged forward like well huge wall of water and then spread out as it gained momentum over a vast area which you can see from the aerial pictures you see this vast area that was taken people just running for their lives in the middle of the night they'd heard the surge of water as those that have some notice and that would have been

just a matter of minutes and of course the children on the weakest were the main victims it's horrendous some of the the pictures we've seen so far we can't broadcast children of major victims in all of this and prepare for a larger death toll at the end of the day injured all right andrew many thanks indeed al-jazeera sanderson's live in in kenya we're going to weather update next here on al-jazeera then iraq's internally displaced people tell us about their hopes for the future ahead of the first election since the defeat of isis. a protest in the philippines after one of the president's biggest critics is removed from her job. from the clear blue sky of the dome home. to the fresh autumn breeze in the city of atlanta. hello and welcome to international weather forecast now as you look at

weather conditions across europe we've got one frontal system extending down through scandinavia into central parts of europe the some thunderstorms associated with that so looking pretty unsettled crossed southeastern parts of europe as well we've seen some severe storms affecting parts of greece and in the west well jerry weather conditions not too bad there we have got this frontal system pushing in across the u.k. bringing in some more unsettled weather with it so that's pushing in across much of our own through into scotland during the course of friday still some showers across the alpine region extending down through the balkans and then as we head on into the start of the weekend of course is right on the way much cooler conditions just fifteen as a high in london paris seeing some rain to the southeast there is still seeing some very unsettled weather conditions just in the twenty's though for much of russia through moldova into ukraine there with care scraping twenty degrees celsius i never saw the mediterranean weather conditions generally looking fine plenty of sunshine here winds coming off the mediterranean for the most part so temperatures

a village in the kuta county. people in indonesia are rallying in the capital jakarta in a show of solidarity with palestinians they're condemning the united states decision to recognize jerusalem as israel's capital i was a serious step fasting is that. angry speeches here at the national monument and chuck tens of thousands of people have gathered here to show solidarity with palestine and they're saying that the move of the united states embassy to jerusalem is an insult to islam and the provocation to the world although it's organized by conservative groups this is an issue that unites many here in indonesia in the nisha doesn't have any diplomatic relations with its route and president joke we don't again stressed this morning that he condemns the u.s. move and also condemns its route and he urges united nations to take steps against the move of the embassy and the united states embassy is very near to here only
11:22 am
over there and the security is very very high but so far the organizers have not announced if they're going to move the whole protest to the united states embassy this is a large protest of a series of protests that have been happening since last year december when donald trump announced the move of the u.s. embassy and also then tens of thousands took to the streets showed their anger and also urged all indonesians to boycott american products russian opposition leader election of only is once again in court this time for mobilizing protests against the government on the eve of president vladimir putin's inauguration thousands of people protested against his fourth term evolving it was a war i was among one thousand six hundred people detained by police but out of moscow i was here a story challenges outside the courthouse what are we expecting to happen to election of only. well he's up on two

different counts here the first of which is disobeying the police when they were detaining him and the second counts is for repeated organization of authorised rallies it's a familiar routine this this tends to happen pretty much every time he calls people out onto the streets the authorities offer him one rallying sites he rejects that because it's too far out of the city center and instead hopes to bring his supporters down to somewhere a very much in the heart of things in moscow then quite often you get a rest as we did last weekend and it's usual that only is one of those detention so what i think we're going to get today is perhaps an indication. to me of putin starts his fourth term in office as president an indication of whether or not it's ready made putin is changing his tactics when it comes to the valley
11:24 am
previously want to get to a reason the short spell in police cells he gets twenty thirty days something like that he sits there tweets a bit and then comes out if there's anything on top of that we might suppose to be a putin is tightening the screws but if it stays as a normal twenty or thirty day detention i think we can just assume the right to be a person assumes that if it's not broke he doesn't need to fix it but it's sort of and it's not that. the russian government is denying the opposition an opportunity to protest it's just that the opposition feels that the venues that they're offered are not quite high profile and that is not right. i mean essentially want a round he says every time he applies for a permit every time the authorities in moscow say well yes you can have something but only for a small number of people and out somewhere in the suburbs always says we shouldn't
11:25 am
have to go through this rigmarole because under the russian constitution we are allowed every russian is allowed to take to the streets and to express their political opinions so no value always says that the strict rules and regulations that have been brought in in the last five years or so to make sure that. opposition process are limited to faraway locations or if they are taking place in the center of the city it's basically one man pickett's in a valley says this is against the constitution we shouldn't have to do this and that's why he's prepared to essentially break the most recent laws bring listen porters into the center of moscow and risk what's going on now on repeated occasions him having to end up sitting in a jail cell for a while already many things i was there as were a challenge there in moscow iraqis will vote on saturday in the first parliamentary

destroyed in the west of the city alone. every few days people who used to leave the gather in the camps to collect food handouts. off camera some tell us that when eisel took control of mosul in two thousand and fourteen many among the city's predominantly sunni population believed eisel may improve their lives up to what they describe as so many broken promises by the bank that government but they say that quickly changed when they began to experience the brutality of life on the. fled the fighting in mosul in july last year she blames the government. and the suffering she and her family enjoy in the camps. one of the but i want to do another part not that i think we only want to go home it's inhumane living here the other day it rained and our tent flooded we're only asking politicians to rebuild their homes isn't the least of all human rights

it's the fault of the government that brought this calamity on us thought i might mean deliberately winning the trust of mosul sunni population is going to be a major challenge for the new government if it is to prevent iraq's sectarian divide getting wider. and hundreds of thousands of people like him the first step towards winning that trust would be rebuilding their home so they can start rebuilding their lives. at al-jazeera sunshine camp in iraq. that the protests in the philippines off the top court expelled chief justice but he alluded serrano she was removed in a vote by fellow judges acting on a government petition seeking her dismissal so i know has been critical of president would bring order to say urging people to stand up to what she called his or thorough terry and rule richard hey diane is a fellow at the manila based struck based struck they say the institute he says
