interesting game we have not judo and not football it's just chaos and it's where we're heading and what we're concerned about. i believe that president trump abandoned the twenty fifty nuclear deal because it was signed by his predecessor. we now need to continue our discussion with iran in order to convince the united states to gradually return to the discussion because we will expand the framework not because we are giving up on the twenty fifteen treaty but because we are responding to a very legitimate concern to israel and saudi arabia to a larger extent we are thinking about the need to destabilize the whole region so i believe that the kind of dialogue i had with president trump was very necessary and very useful because it enabled us to open up about this particular point and allowed us to move forward. mike fitzpatrick is executive director of the americas office of the international institute for strategic studies he spent twenty six years in various posts at the u.s. state department is joining us live from washington d.c. thanks very much indeed for your time if i understand it correctly you rob thank

you very much the if i understand it correctly the foreign policy agenda of the department of state says the aim is to build and sustain a more democratic secure and prosperous world for the benefit of the benefit of the american people and the international community how is the trumpet ministration doing. that's typical boilerplate isn't it it's the same language would be used in any administration this administration isn't doing so well in most of those areas. you know they're good at tearing things down taking apart what terms predecessor had put in place but constructing things takes time it takes cooperation and they haven't been very good at cooperating with other nations except in a few areas so overall you can't rate them very high in success i'm strong is the argument that some of the deals that trump has pulled the us out

enemy a common enemy it can unite people and it can make a country easier to control and of course it can divert attention as well is it too naive to suggest that part of the motivation for the foreign policy such as it is that the trumpet ministration is following is to do exactly that to find a common enemy so that people can become more united and more easily governable. well if that is the strategy it's totally failed because america is politically just so divided today much worse than ever so but i don't think that's really the case i don't think that this is some kind of a. shake shake the dog you know it strategy of creating an enemy and then i'm going to war and uniting the country. this is you know preparing for war in order to prevent war this is a longstanding premise of american foreign policy it's stronger in republican

arabia seeking nuclear capability of its own and it destroys any possibility of working with iran constructively to improve many of the ways in which iran has been a problem so that's i think the biggest one but then you have the north korea situation which had been kind of close to war last year now north korea has been pursuing a diplomatic strategy trump has gone along with that but the way he's done it creates a lot of problems because he's so ill prepared so ill disciplined and within his administration you have a pump a zero saying one thing and bolton saying another and all of them saying things that the north koreans find have poor and so you don't get very high marks for that kind of diplomatic practice really interesting to get your views in this mark fitzpatrick thank you very much indeed exit polls suggest ireland has overwhelmingly back to change to the country's restrictive abortion laws the
