a strong determination to break the siege whatever the circumstances palestinians turn to desperate measures to break an israeli blockade and get urgent medical help . we begin this news hour in colombia where early results suggest that an arch critic of the twenty sixteen peace deal with foch rebels has come on top of the presidential election first round with counting continuing right wing conservative yvon do k. is ahead but will face left wing a ghost of a petro in the run to in three weeks let's go live to our luck in america editor of the sea and human lucy how has the voting been going. hello rob we are outside the savile paid to his campaign headquarters it is it's

raining as you can see but there is still a lot of his supporters outside and also inside the end of body tory i'm waiting for him to arrive they can't believe that there is static that he has made it into the second round against even talk of the conservative who six months ago was barely known but he has the support of the former conservative president i would it would even that's his main ticket the this election has been absolutely historic in so many ways first of all because it was the most peaceful election in all of colombian history in more than two hundred years people were killed they were fired that it went very very smoothly in that sense there were charges or claims of certain irregularities vote tampering and so forth but it hasn't seemed to really really have made much of a difference in the polls had put him in first place and will stab a paper in second place but you get the pendulum self had suggested that there would be fraud clearly that was not the case and all in all the left and center
2:03 am
left has won almost half of the votes which is unprecedented here in columbia happens it's going to be very interesting to see what happens in three weeks time on what lissie happens between now and then is there more campaigning or is there another vote. absolutely it's already begun it's campaigning and especially for the underdog who is committed to always we just have to remind our viewers he was a former and nineteen guerrilla he had been in prison he was once armed the and nineteen gave up the armed struggle back in one thousand nine hundred enjoying the political struggle as they call it but he is still seen by many here as a threat who could turn this country into another cuba or another that is the fear factor is going to be very important he's going to have to overcome that in order to bring over to his side the votes he needs to beat a vandal game which is still a formidable force he had he won almost forty percent of the votes he's threatening
2:04 am
to undo if not all at least part of the peace of the peace deal which is already floundering here so the whole future of the peace accord that was signed in the more than a year ago here in colombia hangs in the balance not just who would be the president this year is it predominantly the peace deal that is the at the center of this election because the country is also facing problems with health care on the economy and unemployment as well isn't it. you're absolutely right and you know when i speak to people out here and i say why did you vote for. they say they don't mention the peace deal as their first concern they talk about inequality in health education they say look this man is running on the platform of social justice in a country which has the second largest and social justice or social difference equal to the syndrome in the whole of latin america i'm pointing to the world bank that have a rather the largest inequality gap is the is the way it should be put so people
2:05 am
are very angry about that and they feel that was probably to will really look out for them as well as of course defend that peace deal while even look at it says and then like maybe it believes like many other people in this country that that peace deal was just might. still soft on the rebels and they need to go to prison so most of the people that voted for him have voted for him for that reason and the second round will probably do it to chemo how it somebody like will stop it from the say for now thank you very much indeed i want to bring in i'm very goal my squad as he's an associate researcher at the university of sussex his school of global studies and he's joining us on skype from bogota thank you very much indeed for your time if even duke a eventually does win how much of the fog deal is he actually going to be able to change in real terms. well the first thing that you need to know is that there's some changes already taking place in colombia so
2:06 am
in regards to the piers the ill how is there important parts of it remain that have not been implemented for example into poland want to get remains that has to do we were at an agrarian reform that point is almost not implemented at all and equal respect and see the resoled implementation of various points of agreement but really that point not a plate and the other issue that concerns many human rights defenders is the patient to each. part to all its best to not just make what. they did president kate if it becomes the president. what is the risk that if those changes are made to the fog peace agreement that they could actually spark violence in the country as the former fog rebels object to these proposals.
2:07 am
well you know things are complicated so far because we have round six hundred thousand or five members who had already gone by the joint route so eat what the rest is not implement multi-page more members of the pirate rejoined. and they all think that we need to bear in mind is. the government they see in you is not honoring their remit we divide it won't be waiting maybe shape it you know president thought these take us back into pirates and things we're standing columbia in regards to human rights violations even took they only came into politics as i understand it in about twenty fourteen does he actually have the experience to think if he becomes president to carry through with the reforms not only to the peace deal that he's been talking about but also the
2:08 am
elements that we were talking to our correspondent the cea about in terms of the economy the unemployment and the health care problems that the country is facing as well. well he's a very decent of course he's been on lease senator for four years but it brought him he's not only do it but the people who are around him he's surrounded by. the right we say. based on rupert who thought they knew how being. all in gross human rights violations. and he has been joined also by. this but now no more mayor. prosecutor is. it all runs. all speakers who. didn't know that in europe and
2:09 am
creation in order to you know organize things you know wait they wrote implement so i'm told you won't so i would say that it is very. very. but you have a will and do something and you have that or if you well there are few things that stop you from doing that i do want to ask you about his opponent of course kristoff will patra because the the polls of the moment are showing the two men fairly close which of course is why it's going to a runoff that's going to be happening later in june because stubble petro has promised to deal with corruption he's promised to separate the political and judicial systems of colombia how much of a pushback do you think he's going to get if he attempts to do that if he becomes president. well yeah he's going to have a hard time too if we see the law. or let menteri pre-sold seem to lecture us in march when we can see. it mean what he's going to force in colombia essentially
2:10 am
people we do any piper same to all members of parliament and then you have come here and he does it we know i know there are twenty four percent but they together i think are saying to all. yeah they really with me girls i mean this is the. time to try to implement their own rooms that he wants to implement in order that russia however we hope it will has just that he would brody to a constitutional assembly because the congress hasn't got the willingness to trust the least of the inmates do you believe that they sometimes want because. it was in colombia and by no means the people he would be able to put in their reports that he's thinking to do but it's a very risky option also because prodi center of equal income will get a large number of seats in the new constitutional assembly it's going to be
2:11 am
a hard time for i don't those precedents undergoing a sort as we really appreciate your time thank you very much indeed thank you very much. the leader of italy's five star movement has called on parliament to impeach president. after efforts to form a new government collapsed it comes after the president vetoed the prime minister designate gore said giuseppi choice of economy minister forcing him to give up trying to follow on that administration the president was quick to defend themselves saying he had to block the euro skeptic candidates powerless of honor to protect italy's economy it's thought on now try to appoint a caretaker government there are fears of a possible constitutional crisis and fresh elections with continuing political instability al jazeera is not in baba reports. after weeks of talks and hopes of a breakthrough italy's prime minister designate throws in the towel. i have
2:12 am
announced the mandate which i have been given by the president of the republic a diploma government of change. had been asked by the so-called populist coalition which between them won the most seats in the march election with forming a viable cabinet now he says that's proved a bridge too far and the sticking point the proposed economy minister paolo servo a former minister who's also a well known euro skeptic italy's president says boehner would have sent a worrying message to italy's partners and the financial markets. they love. you and i'm not considering the individual i don't want someone who supports an opinion which was expressed more than wanted and that would inevitably lead to italy's exit from the you're right. up until the last minute material salvini leader of the right wing likud party had insisted his pick for economy minister must not be vetoed speaking live on social media late on sunday he called the president's rejection anti democratic. and said no he said there will not be
2:13 am
a government we work for nothing we will have a technocrat government i ask of the a democracy italy do the italian decide or do the germans of french decide it's absolutely incredible from my point of view. so vini wants fresh elections so too does luigi demaio leader of the five star movement which got the most votes in march when the mission there was over fifty percent support for two political parties parties that want to change things want to represent the talents in their interests but in the end a way to block it is always seems to be found the president is expected to decide his next step on monday it could well see another non-politician given the job of heading into real government for a tally of political instability is a fact of life one of many hoped was about to change the debugger al-jazeera because of a bigger is a professor of political economy at university of rome told vogue he joins us on
2:14 am
skype from the italian capital thank you very much for being with us on al-jazeera first of all how likely is it in real terms that the president could be impeached very unlikely we've already heard one of their leaders of the two parties that have failed to. become government to say that these are minor issues there's another party the five star movement which strongly is arguing right now for impeachment but since the other one the northern league is already saying these are minor issue i would not say that this is the central point of the crisis. the president has said it was his duty to protect the savings of a tally of italians and that's the reason that he objected to this candidate for economy minister isn't the president right the president right to consider the wider implications when making these appointments. well you know technically speaking yes because it's him deciding who the meanest tears are going to be there's another issue that we never discuss during this campaign about
2:15 am
whether they're this was our government our was to choose whether to stay within the euro area are not to you came out later on and so you could argue that. should have another campaign to debate that more even more of if you can see the doctor program a do two parties together have put forward. has an implication of expansion of these components of five percent of g.d.p. from lower taxes and going to spending and people were starting to wonder where they would find the money and this was raising questions about whether their printing money getting out of the euro would be a solution so they were increasing the amount of that house and this government never quelled those doubts and this last minister was never able to say that there we was a government to stay within do you rock so the perception was that this was
2:16 am
a government that all of a sudden had put the issue of the euro descent through it splats form or at least was raising doubts about this and so there are many reasons for why a lot of people are understanding why we are current in the standoff to those of us outside italian politics it does seem that both parties have been elected predominantly on ideological grounds rather than experience crowns or grounds of practicality all we know seeing that becoming an issue as the two parties that are attempting to deal with the real day to day elements of running a country. i once said is that they all of you behind it i would say there are years and years of mistakes of wrong comic policies that have created a huge divide in the country and where more than fifty percent of the people i have been uncomfortable with these policies identifying them with european union advice and making you wrote that through the true scapegoat of this crisis while we
2:17 am
knowing that the problem where your stereotype policies so you have a lot of a semi's in the north not have voted for them are going to eat crushed by austerity and you have a lot of the people that i've always relied on turn up demand and public demand in the south and it being crushed and unemployment has gone up because of the lack of public investment so there are true economy reasons and the bad functioning of european institutions behind is that not just briefly. one final question given the fact that these parties are saying that they have chosen this individual to be their economy minister and yet that's being blocked by the president isn't it a right to say that this is actually working against a democracy in italy are we seeing a change in the structure of democracy as it's perceived in italian politics democracy entirely has always worked fantastically since world war two i would say that now we know very clearly that the next election likely to be in the fall we'll
2:18 am
have the center which you didn't have in the march the last march election we'll have at the center the issue of the euro whether we want to stay in the euro area or we're going to stay you know european union that still with the euro x. very recently in terms of asking less a stereotype and more development these issues were not debated enough during the past elections i think everybody's now aware of these are these going to be dissent told point of the next ones but we appreciate your time gustavo pic i thank you very much indeed great pleasure. plenty more ahead on the news hour including the reaction to a rally against refugees staged by germany's far right movement plus. all we hearing him is paying lip service to corruption and he's going to do both and he's going to do that hundred days i haven't seen anybody being arrested yet we look at whether several ramaphosa is living up to his promises to south africa's president . and daniel rykiel those victorious in the monaco grand prix peter is going to

have all the action in the sport. u.s. officials are in north korea to discuss details of a possible summit next month between donald trump and kim jong on plans for a summit on june the twelfth and singapore were initially scraps when the u.s. president announced on thursday he was pulling out only to express enthusiasm a day later says things are going well in a tweet trump writes i truly believe north korea has brilliant potential and will be a great economic and financial nation one day kim jong un agrees with me on this it will happen mike hanna has more from washington d.c. . the state department has confirmed that a u.s. negotiating team has traveled to the north korean side of the demilitarized zone for negotiations hitting the team is some king now he's
2:20 am
a former ambassador to south korea and he was part of the delegations that negotiated during the so-called six party talks between two thousand and three of tall they broke down in two thousand and nine now interestingly enough on the north korean side their chief negotiator is chose she's a deputy foreign minister and was part of the north korean delegation during those six nation talks so certainly the go see it is from both sides know each other well aware of the history of the ongoing crisis in north korea now what they are doing we understand is to set an agenda for the talks should they take place on june the twelfth without a clear agenda discussed over the next three days there's likely to be no summit the u.s. delegation arrived in north korea after a surprise meeting between conjunction and mungy in on saturday south korea's
2:21 am
president says pyongyang is committed to denuclearization and kim is looking forward to meeting trump and thomas reports from seoul. the surprise summit the second meeting in a month between julian and kim jong il was arranged just hours in advance it was held in secret this for to choose released only afterwards by the two governments it's north korea's with excited commentry attached. what's clear is that the sudden into korean summit was a direct response to donald trump's letter canceling the june twelfth north korea u.s. summit the leaders of both koreas want that back on littlejohn's. we have agreed that the june topes summit should be held successfully and that our journey to the korean peninsula as denuclearization em perpetual peace should not be halted president said kim jong un once again committed to denuclearize ation and that he
2:22 am
had told him that president trump in return would end hostile relations and cooperate economically this was not a meeting president trump was told about in advance but in washington tonight he hinted he could yet be travelling to singapore a lot of people are working on it. will be along very nicely so we're looking at june twelfth singapore that hasn't changed. and it's more along pretty well analysts the splits on who's driving the agenda donald trump is seen as a person who can start a war and the last say forty eight hours to get maybe more of the fear that dormant thompson is stray from is going to cancel the summit and then this if you lead to a new escalation of tensions and probably of what if this year has been decisive others think it's kim in the driving seat they think his commitment to denuclearize ation means u.s. withdrawal from the region to not unilateral north korean disarmament in exchange
2:23 am
for the lifting of sanctions i think it's the north koreans driven disengagement consolidate for strategic nuclear deterrence they've decided that they can push forward under those reasons not only with the united states but also south korea and reengage with china they have a clear pathway forward whoever is driving the june twelfth singapore summit is looking a lot more likely than it was it seems like longer but it was only three days ago that the u.s. north korean summit was suddenly called off since then we've been on what some have called a diplomatic rollercoaster roller coasters run along cranks someone designs them plans the twists and turns this ride is altogether different and a lot more serious and littleness al jazeera so. a protest against refugees has been held in germany's capital thousands of supporters of the far right party alternative for germany or the march through berlin the party swept into parliament
2:24 am
last year on a wave of anti migrant sentiment it's now the largest opposition bloc. since twenty fifteen more than a million refugees have arrived in germany as part of chancellor angela merkel's open door policy last year she agreed to cap the number of arrivals at two hundred thousand a year as a concession during talks to form a new coalition government last month merkel agreed to take in ten thousand people selected by the un's refugee agency for the resettlement program it's not clear which countries they will come from david jason has more from berlin. a highly vocal confrontation herron beilin but not a violent one alternative but germany held a large rally outside best of all the burley in main train station then marched through the streets to the brandenburg gate behind me where they they held their actual demonstration of their speeches from the party leaders but it was a message which the protest has and the more many more thousands of them on the
2:25 am
streets of berlin than there were members of the old terms the germany they tried to drown out the message of this party it first came into the parliament in the last elections with a bonus tag any more than ninety seats they are now the main opposition party in germany they have overtaken the green party and they're beginning to challenge the social democrats who are part of the grand coalition so there is a movement here towards the extreme right a populist movement a movement it was because essentially by the large number of refugees more than a million that came in and angela merkel's open open borders policy though this is a problem that's going to remain here in germany the fact that even in the bone the stark you're hearing paranoid race accent phobic anti semitic remarks you are now hearing them it's little rallies on the streets of berlin this is a problem that's going to be causing ructions within the grand coalition social
2:26 am
democrats want to keep a liberal attitude towards refugees but to act them up as parties trying to tighten up the borders restrict immigration two hundred thousand a year that's causing attention even within the grand coalition and we're going to see more scenes like this and we're going to hear more from the old turn to germany because now essentially they see that growing mainly the demographics borders from the east the blue collar workers the unemployed in the old the people in the east and. many who fear that he really isn't being changed forever and who fear for their future so we'll see many more of these demonstrations and many more of these confrontations three palestinians have been killed by israeli shelling in gaza that happened east of the city of rafa in the southern gaza strip israel's military says the men were armed members of the islamic jihad group more than one hundred people have been killed by israeli fire in the gaza strip since mass protests began in
2:27 am
march two boats will leave gaza this week with palestinians needing urgent hospital care on board they're going to try to break an israeli blockade which has prevented medical supplies from getting in and patients getting out hospitals have been struggling to treat thousands of palestinians wounded by israeli bullets during protests but in smith reports. gaza is blockaded by israel on all sides see included but this week two boats loaded with patients who need hospital treatment and students with university places will try to breach israel sea blockade which begins sixteen kilometers out in the mediterranean the passengers have a strong determination to break the siege whatever the circumstances whatever the challenges whatever the obstacles that would have been that would be posed by the israeli side doctors hospitals are full of patients who need urgent medical treatment there are those injured in two months of protests and longer term cases
2:28 am
at least now i have sixty five of them already admitted those who would want to do in the marshall for turn. but there are many other cases of cancer and open heart surgeries and many other complicate neurosurgical cases the cases all of them need to travel abroad because of shortage of personalities induced by the israeli blockade in gaza strip and why can't they travel abroad because the bulk of our seed must of time and these patients should probably in time he can say to a patient why when cancer come back after three months that he will deteriorate and you have too much complication they cannot wait life long waiting for this product up in. the post that will be used to being kept hidden organizers fear israel will try to destroy them before they leave the port and reality the boats are not going to get any further than israel's maritime blockade which is as tightly and harshly enforced as the land blockade but at least those on the boats will highlight again the open prison like conditions that there are here in gaza that prevent almost anyone from leaving burnitz with al-jazeera gaza palestinian president mahmoud
2:29 am
abbas will stay longer in hospital where he's being treated for a lung infection the eighty two year old was expected to be discharged from is the shot in hospital on sunday but he'll remain there for an eighth day he's been admitted for what doctors initially said were medical tests following is surgery military commanders in iraq say the defeat of eisold doesn't mean the threat has ended iraq's army is no training with the u.s. led coalition that helped win the fight against the armed group but the presence of foreign troops remains a contentious issue some of bins of aid was given rare access to a coalition base run by spanish troops. it's a hot day during ramadan but these iraqi soldiers must complete their task officers are being trained to become trainers for their own troops. iraqi forces need to maintain control after the defeat devices and hang that i would to target them the most we have eliminated i so militarily we have retaken all the iraqi territories
2:30 am
now we are conducting hunting down and pursuing missions and intensifying intelligence work our fight now is a fight of intelligence prowess so he would do as small units are learning how to navigate alleyways in a me controlled territory. a civil guard unit is conducting this course at the spanish run base as part of the u.s. led coalition the commander says exercises are important for iraqi forces to maintain security. to train iraqi forces to be able to provide a safe and secure environment. after years of toppling their shooting skills it's time for more verbal communication it's important for iraqi soldiers to know how to serve warrants and make arrests they need a different method from fighting eisel training for war equally important as training these troops are not just training for warfare but how to maintain urban peace in an environment which is close combat. u.s.
2:31 am
troops are also helping maintain the readiness of iraqi forces after the two thousand and three invasion u.s. forces were seen by many as occupiers since then there has been a growing military partnership u.s. led coalition forces have provided weapons and training to build the iraqi army despite their close coordination the presence of u.s. troops in iraq remains politically sensitive and we're going to maintain i'm unsure at the iraqi security forces have what they need the u.s. commander says their mission is important even after isis defeat i think there's still any of course that that neighbor be the decision of this government of iraq and the government that comes because we're here on their imitation but we see now that we move to more of an operational and strategic level assistance that we can provide. after the initial collapse against isis iraq's military regroup to hunt down fighters and recapture territory iraqi soldiers are confident they have learnt from past mistakes and are ready to confront challenges head on osama bin job

a down to zero. iraq it's been a hundred days since forza became south africa's president he took office after his predecessor jacob zuma resigned under pressure from his party during his eight years in power zuma failed to shake off corruption scandals malcolm webb reports from johannesburg. they called it rama four yeah the reaction of many south africans when cyril ramaphosa became president in february things had gone from bad to worse for his predecessor jacob zuma he's eight years were blighted by a series of corruption scandals. last year people protested calling for him to step down eventually resigned under pressure from his own party to run opposed has been promising to clean up ever since this is the year in which

we turn the tide. in our public institutions thanks he began with a cabinet reshuffle some of the controversial ministers resume in years were out but others stayed including this man. now minister of home affairs leaked documents linked him to major corruption scandals he denied involvement. but it seems rum oppose a has helped investor confidence south africa's currency the rand and its credit ratings have stabilized since he took over but the political opposition says it's not enough and i haven't seen anybody going to jail for the corruption top of the corruption in south africa all we hearing him paying lip service to corruption and say he's going to do both and he's going to do that one hundred days i haven't seen anybody been arrested yet. last month from oppose a cut short a trip to a commonwealth summit in london people protested in the northwest province they demanded the governor zuma ally to step down over all delivery of public services

frequently recurring issue in south africa. another key issue is land since apartheid most of it still belongs to the white minority many black people the land less on the pressure from opposition in february opposes a.n.c. supported emotions in parliament to try and amend the constitution to allow government expropriation of land without payment historically the a.n.c. is rhetoric has been radical with politicians promising redistributions of wealth but in practice its economic policies are centrist in that respect in spite of the talk of land redistribution things haven't really changed much on the run opposer he's been on the boards of several corporations is widely seen as a friend to big business with presidential elections due next year rahm opposes performance in the months ahead will determine if the a.n.c. can still win the majority it's always enjoyed malcolm webb al-jazeera johannesburg

south africa. ok let's just quickly recap our top stories this hour results from the first round of colombia's presidential election suggest a right wing fog peace deal critiquing iran duke a is in the lead with about thirty nine percent of the vote he's likely to face left wing challenger gustavo petrol and a second round run off at about three weeks' time. the leader of italy's populist a five star movement has called for president says your model as impeachment after efforts to form a new government collapsed prime minister designate receptive kaante gave up attempts often not at all a veto to his choice of economy minister says he blocked the euro skeptic candidates to protect the economy. donald trump says u.s. officials are in north korea to prepare for a possible summit between him and kim jong un next month in the tweets the president also said north korea will become a great financial nation one day earlier trump announced he was pulling out of the

june twelfth meeting but then back trying to quickly let's get more on that story with intel to orbit he's a former u.s. diplomat he's specializing in north korea we appreciate your time thanks very much for being with us on al-jazeera on has obviously demonstrated that he is capable of making some snap twists and turns and so has donald trump is it going to be smooth sailing towards a summit whenever it happens do you think. why i think one thing both leaders have proved in the last couple of days is that they both have a real stake in the success of the summit but the two leaders have not resolved the broader question of denuclearization and i think the substantive gap remains quite large so it remains to be seen whether they can do anything to close that in your experience because you do have long experience of this kind of negotiation given the strong words that we've heard from north korea and the u.s. what can actually be achieved at this meeting given that there are so many very
2:37 am
areas as you mentioned why i think it's important for u.s. policymakers to understand how seriously north korea takes its nuclear weapons program it is a source of leverage for them it is a guarantee of regime survival and it's not something that it's going to give up easily if at all so the only way this summit can succeed is if the united states comes closer to the north korean position on denuclearization or if the two sides work to lower public expectations is that going to be possible because there's a great deal as we were talking about about the rhetoric on both sides there's a lot at stake personally if you like certainly politically for donald trump and kim jong un respectively in their own countries there's not really going to be a lot of room for negotiation when it comes to saving face in the terms.
2:38 am
and i think it's absolutely about managing public expert expectations if the united states and north korea can agree on a lower threshold for what constitutes success i think it's possible for both sides to find common ground but if they're going to continue to take a maximalist approach to denuclearization i don't see much prospect for success. is a former u.s. diplomat specializing in north korea we appreciate your time thank you very much. al-jazeera as investigative unit has exposed a much fixer from an organized crime syndicate who claims to have bribed international cricketers to under-perform he correctly predicted what players in two test matches would do at a certain point during the game david harrison has our exclusive report. al-jazeera went undercover posing as wealthy investors to investigate corruption in cricket. that is how serious we are an e
