a warning to afghans to stay away from ministries from police stations and from anything associated with the government or the military this was a bold attack on a heavily fortified compound the ministry of interior the interior ministry spokesman tells us the ten attackers were involved in this assault started like so many others here with an explosion at the for at the main gates and then attackers heading in we are told they did not get into the main compound itself it is not a big road in kabul though and it was a it was shut down snarling traffic throughout the city and for about an hour an hour and a half flights also were diverted from the international airport here because the ministry of interior is not far from the runway of the international airport so it's caused a lot of chaos here in the capital the minister of interior was already on high alert after a car bomb was found there friday and diffused outside that ministry so with the spring offensive that's cold now in place do expect heightened security measures at
2:03 pm
a government buildings like the interior ministry. there have been heightened security measures all around the city there are new checkpoints a lot of more a lot more police and military trucks large trucks have been banned are not allowed to come into the city during the daytime they are searched and they're allowed to come in and do what they need to do in the city at night time. certainly security has been heightened at ministries like the ministry of and ministry of interior but despite this these attacks continue as it has just been the taliban as well has launched attacks here in kabul killing hundreds of people since the beginning of this year many of them very bold attacks now this one on the ministry of interior really was. an ambitious because it is a heavily fortified compound with a lot of buildings inside and a lot of guards and a lot of military police there protecting it's it has been

a very difficult time everybody here in kabul is on edge and around the country we're also hearing that the taliban. took over a district in tahrir in the northeast of the country today as well and they have been attacks in local and other parts of the country to jennifer glass thank you a flare up of violence between the israeli army and armed palestinian factions in gaza appears to be over hamas and islamic jihad say they've reached a ceasefire agreement with israel bringing an end to the worst fighting between the two sides in four years fighting was marked by twenty four hours of palestinian rocket attacks on israeli airstrikes mostly on tuesday meanwhile two palestinians are still in israeli detention off for taking part in the first ever attempt from gaza to breach israel's naval blockade on tuesday is really navy intercepted what was called the freedom boat shortly after it set sail from gaza shores as you can see bernard smith has more from gaza. it's been quiet in gaza since about four
2:05 pm
am local time when a cease fire appears to taken hold this we understand was following a message delivered from the israelis by egyptian mediators to the different palestinian factions in gaza saying that if you do not stop firing rockets and mortars into israel now then israel will retaliate in a much stronger way perhaps even targeting the leaderships of the different palestinian factions in gaza that seems to have done the trick the groups here in gaza saying while they have agreed to a cease fire what happened in the throughout the night was that because islamic jihad was the main protagonist and started firing these rockets into israeli territory then the kassam brigade hamas is armed wing felt obliged to join in there was pressure on the street to show its strength so this is when more and more
2:06 pm
groups started joining in firing rockets and mortars into israel and israel continued to fire rockets into gaza hit targets in gaza both sides exchange all of this fire till four o'clock when find about message seems to have come through on the palestinian groups have taken notice iraq's electoral commission says it's canceling the results from over a thousand polling stations used in this month's parliamentary vote it says it witnessed evidence of fraud and voting centers both in iraq and for ex-pats in other countries around ten percent of the total votes will now be manually recounted negotiations to form a government with the winning walk led by shiite cleric that a sudden are still going on trial stratford's joining us from baghdad to tell us more about how this decision came about charlie. well you have worrying times here in what can really be described certainly in the weeks since the election as being a bit of a celebration in terms of the security of this country and how smoothly those

elections went we understand that this all started yesterday a group of parliamentarians coming together and putting pressure on the government here on the independent electoral commission to make these recounts in certain areas of the country areas including baghdad bill unbias a lot had been an in of the majority of these areas interest in the sunni areas and it's also worth pointing out that many of these parliamentarians as soon as he didn't do very well in the recent elections now today a parliamentary session has continued and that pressure has seemingly had results now on the independent electoral commission these parliamentarians now saying that they are putting a draft law together in which they are asking for the entire election to be done again for there to be a manual recount of votes. right the way across the country and they're
2:08 pm
demanding that in this law that they speed down with the judiciary the iraqi judiciary supervising and the u.n. presence here the u.n. mission in iraq it's also important to recognize that this is a draft and will and it how the sea will have to be drafted and read debated and there are a lot of loops and hoops that have to be jumped through before that law is policy but it just shows you how tense potentially the situation can be here in iraq following these elections so how worrying then is all of this for the negotiations that are going on right now to form a government after the elections. well it was the prime minister hyderabadi yesterday who came out very interesting lisa said that he was concerned and said that if this kind of if these allegations continue and the scope pressures continue on the government then we risk seeing what he described as
2:09 pm
a political vacuum in iraq obviously the election commission as i think you reported of threatened if these kind of allegations continue instability indeed. rises then we could even risk this is according to the election commission potentially a civil war here we know how difficult it has been to get these elections through smoothly in iraq we know the history of this country we know how sectarianly divide is so certainly this is a worrying development but there is a lot that certainly these parliamentarians have to do in order for this draw floor to become law and for any kind of potential recount manually or otherwise to happen all right charles stratford reporting from baghdad thank you the north korean leader kim jong un's right hand man is on his way to the united states kim young told boarded a flight from beijing to new york a few hours ago he's the vice chairman of north korea's ruling party and is to hold talks with the u.s.

a group of gunmen have attacked the afghan interior ministry headquarters in the capital kabul police say a car bomb was detonated at the entrance and then several gunmen managed to get inside the compound security forces say they battled the attackers for more than two hours before subduing the. italy's interim prime minister carlo carli has been holding talks with the president in an attempt to form a new government president had named the wall rejecting the choice of a populist parties that won the most seats in the recent election both the five star movement on the far right league opposed to rarely they have now renewed efforts to form a coalition government. workers in greece have walked out of their jobs in protest against extending austerity measures as part of the bailout agreement with foreign lenders labor unions have called for a twenty four hour a general strike it will disrupt flights public transport and close schools hospitals will only have emergency stuff greece's latest bailout ends in august but
2:17 pm
the austerity measures will continue for at least two more years. one of the conditions of greece's bailout is that it sells some of its stake in the public electricity company but union leaders fear this will lead to the loss of hundreds of jobs john reports from lawfully. megalo pulley introduced electricity to southern greece in one nine hundred seventy the public power corporation p.p.c. invested hundreds of millions of dollars in a power plant based on exclusive access to cheap lignite coal but that is about to change greece's eurozone partners and creditors have ordered the corporation to share access to this abundant fuel in the name of competition the p.p.c. is being forced to sell three power stations and the lignite mines that feed them union leaders fear that will put eleven hundred jobs at risk in this town alone the little guy going to list all the good paying the whole idea this power station called to be did great a to create his energy security for half
2:18 pm
a century now we're expected to sell it to a private here in the blink of an eye they're coming in to buy ready built plants and mines that's not development development is building new plants hiring people creating jobs this is a sellout there's enough coal here to run the past ation for another fifteen years that would see most of the present workforce safely into retirement but under privatisation their jobs are guaranteed for only six years so they're looking at the prospect of unemployment in middle age but they are partly the victims of their own success the p.p.c. union has fought liberalization for two decades the public power corporation built the electricity market and its infrastructure from nothing over the past century making money wasn't the point investment in the economy was the goal but under europe's free market rules it must now divest itself of its titanic monopoly it has sold its transmission network is privatizing three profitable power stations and by the end of next year must lose half its client base high carbon dioxide emissions
2:19 pm
risk putting lignite coal out of action altogether last year this plant paid thirteen and a half million dollars in emissions fines and their costs have since nearly tripled energy experts say the real value of the sale is not in the existing operation but the thousands. hectors of land and the operating license that come with it so we may well see in a situation where no one or you all know come seen or parades that ignite a few years and then decides to dismantle the lignite. parts of the operation and substituted with a gas power plant or a fourth all take one that's not a transition workers here support renewable energy requires little labor and if this land is given over to a different use it likely won't require the skills jumps at all plus al-jazeera make a locally police in paris are dismantling the largest makeshift camp for refugees

and immigrants in the city the camp in the north east is next to a canal and houses nearly one and a half thousand people they'll now be taken to gymnasiums for this month two migrants drowned in one of the canals along the camp police have cleared out about twenty eight thousand people from camps in the city over the past three years but also butler has more from paris. well there were about thousand five hundred migrants living along this canal in the north of paris and you can see behind me that cleanup operation is still ongoing there were attempts there all along both sides of this canal the conditions are really quite appalling nerdy sanitation everyone here relying on the kindness of strangers and charities for food handouts most of the migrants here were from eritrea so don and somalia now the parish council has actually been in something of a clash with the state governments over the past few months urging the government
2:21 pm
to try and do something about the situation to shelter these migrants and i think things really came to a head recently when two migrants drowned in the canal just behind me it was around six o'clock this morning that said the paris police then came down to this area and decide it's clear evacuated it was very peaceful the migrants were placed on the buses and they are being taken we are told by french authorities to shelters across the paris region where they will be hopefully identified we're told those who are eligible for asylum will be supported now in the french government as recently paul said a very tough immigration law it wants to crack down it says almost so-called economic mark runs on illegal immigration and the interior minister sent out a statement this morning about this evacuation saying that those who are eligible will be helped with their asylum procedure but of course admitted in that statement to say what would happen to the others but we know that this government has really
