on the go over. the siege of corporate. change unspanked my honorable is for south of office by socialist leader federal sanchez who replaces him as prime minister. oh i'm in london with al-jazeera also coming up italy's new populist government is finally sworn in off to three months of deadlock in wrangling. a palestinian paramedic is killed by live fire from israeli forces during protests along the gaza border. in the cape town you see i'm that dividing opinions.

8:02 pm
a new political dawn for spain forty six year old former economics professor pedro sanchez is now the country's new prime minister. in a moment i am aware of the responsibility that i assume in such a complex political moment in our country and what i can say is that apart from been totally aware of it i am going to face all our country's challenges with humility and commitment and above all with a lot of determination and with my first transforming modernize our country because what the socialist party has always done when we have been in the government and secondly to attend the urgent social matters of many people living in precarious conditions and suffering from inequality i'm going to do it with consensus with humility hard work and commitment from. the head of the socialist party pushed for friday's no confidence motion and won by a large margin m.p.'s from six different parties voted overwhelmingly to house marianna will and his center right people's party from office the head of the vote

apologize for his party's past mistakes. it has been an honor to be the prime minister of spain it has been an honor to leave behind a better scheme than one that i found when i took over government i wish my substitute will be able to stay the same i think i have improved the well being of the people of spain if anyone has been offended by my actions i think everyone especially my party without whom none of this would be possible thank you to all spaniards for their support and understanding and good luck to all of you and to spain. the vote follows a long running corruption scandal involving leading members of roy's party he became the first prime minister in office to give evidence in a trial last year. former people's party treasurer louis busyness was among twenty nine people convicted on corruption charges he was once a close ally. he was given a thirty three year jail sentence and fined fifty one million dollars the people's

the north korean leader's right hand man is heading to the u.s. capital to deliver a letter from kim jong un to president trump kim young charles trip to washington comes after what the u.s. secretary of state called great progress in the talks in new york on stay. strong set to be briefed them about the talks the meetings themselves and how the denuclearization f. it might take shape let's go live to our white house correspondent kimberly hulk it is in washington so we're expecting kim jong un's top advisor to arrive in the u.s. capitol to deliver the letter to trump himself will one of their plans how is this likely to take place. but what i'm learning is that any moment and i am watching that live shot position just like the rest of us or all of our viewers will all see it at the same time if it happens while i'm talking essentially what we know is that there was a scheduled meeting with the u.s. secretary of state and donald trump to take place right about now and we believe
8:06 pm
that there will be another person participating in that meeting and that will be the hand a liver as you point out of that letter written by kim jong il to president trump responds to a letter that donald trump wrote last week and that it is going to be hand delivered by the vice chair also the former spy chief this is certainly very significant given the fact that we are building now on top of the talks that took place in new york city between the secretary of state and the vice chair kim chill now this is certainly important because this is the next step of what the white house hopes will be a meeting between the u.s. president and the north korean leader on june twelfth this is what they are building towards this is what they're actively preparing for but they are not there yet and so what we have is the next stage of this incremental process of the white
8:07 pm
house says hopefully moving towards that summit taking place in singapore we know that there will be president the national security advisor john bolton also the white house chief of staff john kelly very trusted advisors of u.s. president donald trump we now believe that the white house does have some understanding of what the letter contains we are told that the president believes it is positive but it has not been released to the public as of yet and it is unclear if the contents of that letter will be released as we we don't know the contents of the letter and as you say uncertainty over whether or not it will be publicly disclosed obviously secretary of state is keen to show that substantial progress has been made but how what are we likely to hear from the white house and taken from president trump in the coming days and weeks. i believe and just one interrupt you for a second there that if i'm not sure what pictures you have but i do see in my
8:08 pm
monitor some motorcades approaching the white house now which i believe could contain the vice chair may also have the secretary of state with him if they are traveling together it's hard to see they are going through at least in the monitor i'm looking at right now a security suite by the u.s. secret service so at any time we could see the moment where they drive up in front of the south lawn of the white house which is traditionally maryam where the president would greet members of state from other him other nations and that's where we expect that we will see some sort of a photo opportunity why is this significant well according to the talks that took place in new york city with the u.s. secretary of state and the vice chair of north korea there was substantial progress made the feeling of the united states is that right now there is a desire by north korea for what the u.s. is calling a strategic shift that means a willingness to denuclearize in exchange for help with by the united states to
8:09 pm
boost the economy and the crippling sanctions that currently are placed as part of the u.s. as maximum pressure campaign but there is a still a significant gap in terms of what it means to denuclearize the pace of denuclearization and trust issues so that is why this white house meeting is important there north koreans are very concerned about the united states not keeping its word and obviously anyone around the world knows that the u.s. word is not always one that can be trusted so this is where these relationships are coming and this is why mike pompei was having a steak dinner. if i was a continued state dinner in new york city with the vice chair and i'm looking at my monitor again and i can see that just outside of the white house there at the south portico in fact we do see the national security. john bolton i believe popped his head out so this arrival to take place any moment but certainly again when it gets
8:10 pm
back to relationships what we know is that this sort of sitting down to have an american style state dinner the president in his letter to kim jong un the north korean leader although it did have a points some concern about north korea's tremendous anger and hostility the overall tone of the letter was one of a willingness and a warmth to try and build on the relationship and that's what we're seeing mary of take place right now at the white house this continued effort to build a relationship something that would be incredibly historic if in fact that meeting could occur the white house saying that this sort of the issue of denuclearization may not be resolved in one meeting but certainly they are hopeful they can have that first meeting to achieve that end state that's right to the great deal of focus we've seen over the past few weeks on the atmospherics surrounding any potential meeting between the americans and the north koreans and at the same time
8:11 pm
skepticism around whether this entire process is going to yield any results atoll and yet we have seen the highest level north korean visit to the united states in nearly two decades i think the last one was when an advisor to kim jong il visited bill clinton in two thousand so regardless of what happens going forward there is a great deal of symbolic significance surrounding this. absolutely you are on in terms of your recollection of those dates and who participated and on top of that there is this recognition that there is an historic opportunity upon us sensually what the u.s. secretary of state called it was a quote pivotal moment he says that they're confident the united states that is things are moving in the right direction in terms of the progress that has been made in the conversations that took place in new york city but there's also an
8:12 pm
awareness that things could change very suddenly such as we saw a leading to the cancellation of the singapore summit that was scheduled for june twelfth which we believe is back on but not has been has not been officially put back on the calendar but certainly there is this feeling that anything could change at any moment and you can see the cars pulling up to the white house now there is in fact after going through the security sweep from my monitor it's difficult to tell who is in which vehicle so feel free to help me out mary you can see no i well i don't i think i mean anybody what we're seeing is that the motorcade has now arrived and can. making his entrance there to well presumably greet the delegation that awaits him and to hand over that letter and perhaps important to point out that. within north korean culture this is something that is it
8:13 pm
is seen as. well it's very important it's something that seen as a sign all of respect and certainly from that point of view this will be old costs of really building trust and positivity around a process that is still very uncertain. absolutely and i apologise i think that i had a little bit of a delay on my visuals compared to your so thank you for that because it was difficult for me to see who was going in and when but when it comes to that trash trust issue that you're talking about there's a lot that north korea has to fear and there's a lot that the united states has to fear remember the rhetoric just one year ago almost the fire in the fury the thing the tweets that we've had from the u.s. president my button is bigger than yours the talking about the nuclear arsenal on the flip side north korea also concerned about the presence the u.s. military presence in the region as some of the u.s.
8:14 pm
allies of course very concerned about some of those short range missiles from north korea and the damage that could be done so there are a lot of interests at play what we tend to focus on north korea and the united states you have to remember that in all of this the ones geographically most are at risk japan south korea japan if of course the japanese prime minister shinzo abbay will be here in advance of the singapore summit to make sure that they are not left out of any deal because there are many issues that strategically are of course important regionally as well so a lot to be discussed but it's right now the building of relationships to get that first meeting between the u.s. president and the north korean leader in singapore that seems to be the primary goal yes indeed to many different relationships to take into consideration it's interesting that you mention japan you have also the chinese you have the russians you have. interested parties but of course that the big difference i suppose the
8:15 pm
contrast between what we're seeing now compared to what we saw in the george w. bush and six party talks is a very bold a bilateral approach being made by president trump he does things differently. he certainly does and this is just another example of that and even some of donald trump's stacia's critics are giving him some credit for getting here to this point now certainly there's a lot that could go wrong and that's also a fear of many of the president's critics but certainly there is a recognition that when things weren't working taking someone who does have a dramatically radical approach often. using those tactics to try and break through an impasse there's a recognition that there is there are no worthy elements to be declared it all of this now as we continue to look at some of the pictures it appears now that they are of that group is now in the oval office where this meeting is set to take place
8:16 pm
we should remind our viewers that a letter is being delivered by the vice chair kim. coles the vice chair of north korea written we believe by the north korean leader kim jong il and in fact delivered to donald trump again the white house expected that the contents of that letter in the words of the president relatively or rather positive but again we're not sure if the contents of that letter will be made public we're also not sure maryam what happens after this oval office meeting the white house very secretive about next steps in terms of what the whereabouts of the vice chair will he joined the president who is scheduled to go to camp david it's a secure location where we expect he is preparing for the upcoming summit with the north korean leader but whether or not the vice chair will be present at those meetings at camp david is still unclear the white house not confirming any of those details but we imagine that we'll find out very soon in fact the exact words from
8:17 pm
the white house where you'll know when we know a lot could change in these next few moments it's a very fluid situation all right well i know you'll keep an eye on all fours thank you very much at the white house where kim jong un's top adviser has arrived to deliver a lecture from kim jong un to u.s. president. now prosecutors in germany a filed a new request to extradite the deposed katla need a car as budged a mountain spent to spain bush a month was detained in march on a european arrest warrant for his role in catalonia has failed independence but last year he's facing charges of rebellion and corruption if found guilty could spend up to thirty years in prison. now to italy where the prime minister the first populist government has been sworn in a little known law professor giuseppe conti will lead a coalition of the anti establishment five star movement on the far right party to bring an end to three months of political deadlock and in baba has more from iran.
8:18 pm
funding over to the new prime minister paolo gentilly makes way for law professor. marking the first time italy's so-called populists have been in government ruled years that if the us were to be loyal to republic to faithfully respect its constitution and its laws and to exercise my role in the exclusive interest of the republic. the financial markets have reacted positively to the new government with shares in italian banks gaining more than three percent on friday but this is unknown territory for it's early and the new administration is promising big changes the incoming interior minister matteo salvini head of the far right league wants to expel hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrants he's recently talked about setting up detention centers across the country while he's equally ambitious rival five-star leader luigi to my old buddy labor and industry minister has promised a basic minimum income then this is how italy will interact with the european union
8:19 pm
paolo savona a euro skeptic prevented from being economy minister just days ago would be in charge of e.u. affairs and giovanni tria the replacement economy minister has criticised germany and called for changes in e.u. fiscal rules to allow more state investment for you can be a bit more of a diplomat and they played a good cop bad cop you know role play in any case what we have to expect from the two men and from this government is a much more vocal a standing of the thing he added i wouldn't say against europe but in face of europe and this is what is worrying somehow international observers. the new cabinet should easily pass a vote of confidence expected early next week but the real test will be whether this highly unusual coalition can hold together and push for reforms that many voters expect and many e.u. leaders fear nadine barber al-jazeera wrote. a french newspaper is reporting that
8:20 pm
saudi arabia is threatening military action against cattle if it acquires russian weapons le monde newspaper says the saudi crown prince has written to the french president to warn that it is ready to retaliate if cattle acquires the s four hundred anti-aircraft defense system the paper says the crown prince asked emmanuel mark on to put pressure on castro not to buy the weapons cache as ambassador to moscow said in january that his country intended to acquire the missile system saudi arabia along with the u.a.e. in bahrain cut off relations with castle last june. a palestinian paramedic has been shot dead by israeli forces during protests along the gaza border several more palestinians have been injured have been demonstrations there every friday since march thirtieth is the latest scenes follow a week that saw the worst escalation of violence between israel and palestinian factions in gaza since two thousand and fourteen sorry force it has more. well another volley of tear gas has been fired into the crowd which remains just
8:21 pm
a couple hundred meters away from the border fence this has been yet another friday of protest here on the gaza israel border it's been going on since march thirtieth and shows no sign yet of stopping these protesters and once again being met with live fire from israeli forces and repeated use very heavy use of tear gas as well the question now is really how long this is sustainable it is still seen by many palestinians here in gaza as a way of venting their continued desperation with the humanitarian situation as it continues to get worse here the real question though is when the political decision from hamas will come to end these protests if it does i was speaking to a senior advisor to the hamas leadership and he was saying that it is a question of israel lifting the siege and blockade at that point the strategy of peaceful protest could perhaps change however the question really is whether a long term ceasefire can be agreed between israel and hamas there's all sorts of
8:22 pm
reporting about that with egypt as the main broker there also reports in the israeli media today that these really army is once again urging its government to act and try to come to some kind of accommodation with hamas as the humanitarian situation can use to it continues to worsen because they're worried that that is further going to worsen the security situation as well both sides though remain a long way apart in terms of what they would want from any such kind of deal and for now the protests continue. european union has launched a dispute settlement case while trade organization in response to the u.s. decision to impose tariffs on steel an alum many in the e.u. along with canada and mexico said they were tallying against in the promising levies on billions of dollars of u.s. goods and explains. the european union must defend itself is the message from the block's trade commissioner who says the e.u. leaders are united in imposing retaliatory tariffs on u.s. exports we are not seeking to to escalate any situation but but we need to respond
8:23 pm
and we do so in a measured manner. but not responding would be the same as accepting these these tariffs which we consider are illegal and against w. there's no word on exactly what the terrorists would be on or when they'd be imposed but they're expected to target a range of u.s. imports from jeans to motorcycles the e.u.'s foreign policy chief says a dispute settlement procedure is being launched at the world trade organization but a trade war isn't wanted the european union is a peace project including on treat we believe in. global free fair trade and we will continue to do so. donald trump's announcement on thursday to impose a twenty five percent tariff on e.u. steel imports and ten percent on aluminum has infuriated e.u. leaders the french president who's worked hard to develop a good relationship with his u.s. counterpart hardened his tone i like him
8:24 pm
a lot he said i think that this decision is not only illegal but it's also a mistake because it addresses the already existing international imbalance by further dividing it and by bringing economic and trade nationalism nationalism is war era leaders may be united for now but will they remain so over the question of whether or not to enter into trade negotiations with washington the twenty eight member bloc has to act on consensus but finding a common approach will not be easy germany is likely to want to avoid a full blown trade war as the largest european exports are to the u.s. it has much to lose france on the other hand may pursue a tougher line. something made clear by the french finance minister. we do not discuss under pressure and we do not negotiate under pressure i think we must return to more wisdom in world traders. the e.u. is one of the main trading partners of the u.s. for now e.u.

a city's first populist government has been sworn in ending three months of political deadlock just that because it's a coalition of politicians from the anti establishment five star movement and the far right party. and the north korean leader's right hand man is at the white house to deliver a letter to the u.s. president from kim jong un kim yong cho is currently meeting donald trump in the oval office. as a new obstacle for millions of syrians who want to go home after fleeing the seventy a war when six million people have been internally displaced by the fighting another five and a half million syrians are refugees in other countries now many of them stand to lose their homes a syrian law passed in april of the government to seize property from people who can't prove ownership the move was countries hosting the refugees because they may now because they're worried that the refugees might not leave they will hold

may be considered safe by some but political economic and security reasons prevent others from returning and now the law is an obstacle to those who want to go back home even if it means living under bashar assad to rule mohamed farah so how is one of them his hometown has been all but destroyed and he has no documents to prove ownership of his land. that i'm doing and i don't have any papers i don't even know my property number that is because i inherited it from my father i don't know if my house is still standing i have nothing by god it's estimated up to fifty percent of syrian land was not officially registered before the war for many permanent displacement is becoming a reality. because of that lebanon rights groups have condemned what they call a shoot to kill policy towards and ink.
