philippines trying to rebound months after a major defeat. from the united states it has only a few days to avoid a trade war leaving it up to washington to deescalate tensions of a terrace finance ministers from some of the world's largest economies say they're concerned and disappointed by president trump's new taxes on steel and many m but as john hendren reports now from washington trump isn't backing down. with days to go before the g. seven summit in canada the economic alliance is fractured the allies are angry and openly talking about a possible trade war we we think this action is inappropriate we think it's absurd to consider canada a security risk the united states and therefore we've taken a targeted and considered approach to retaliation france's foreign minister also says unless the u.s.

reverses its new tariffs on steel and aluminum from europe canada and mexico a trade war is just a few days away. at a meeting ahead of this week's g. seven summit in canada u.s. treasury secretary steven minucci and tried to his ways the allies president trump has been very clear in wanting to address trade issues i don't think in any way the u.s. is abandoning its leadership in the global economy quite the contrary i think we have very broad objectives that are that are across a rebalancing the trade relationship and the trade deficit but he could not offer the one thing u.s. allies want tariff relief trump briefed by minucci and is not backing down taking to twitter on saturday he wrote when you are almost eight hundred billion dollars a year down on trade you can't lose a trade war many economists disagree they say everyone loses in a trade war because a vicious cycle of tariffs makes goods more expensive all around now some u.s.

companies say they fear a trade conflict could end the global economic expansion the upcoming g. seven meeting was expected to celebrate our estimates at this point and these are very rough but we would expect another ten to fifteen percent drop and we're also suffering because of the steel tariffs which was the genesis of all this everything we do involves steel our fencing everything else is steel related so we're seeing increased prices from those things too so it is kind of a domino effect european leaders have already chosen their targets for retaliation iconic american products like harley-davidson motorcycles levi's jeans jack daniels whiskey in florida oranges the next casualties in what could be an escalating trade conflict john hendren al-jazeera washington. well of the g. seven summit steve mission said the u.s. is also pushing for structural changes to china's economy those talks are being led by u.s.

commerce secretary wilbur ross who arrived in beijing on saturday washington and china have threatened to for tat tariffs on goods worth up to one hundred fifty billion dollars each the u.s. wants china to buy more american goods to reduce the trade deficit between the world's two biggest economies were florence italy joins us live now from beijing florence so these talks are broadly about the u.s. trying to reduce its trade deficit with china so how is it proposing to do that and what a both sides actually want. that's right now in the u.s. at the moment buyers about four times more products from the chinese than it sells to china and u.s. president donald trump says he has said he wants to reduce the annual trade deficit between us and china by about two hundred billion dollars within the next two years so how are they proposing to do that well the first step is by getting the chinese to buy more u.s. products now there was some sort of great commitment that the two sides had reached during the last round of trade talks that took place in washington d.c.

last month where china had said it was specific it would substantially increase its purchases of u.s. agricultural products as well as energy goods now in the u.s. secretary will be a ross this weekend is expected to push for a firm commitment from the chinese in terms of specific targets in terms of us in terms of chinese purchases of u.s. goods as well as perhaps seeking for longer term contracts which chinese officials have so far been reluctant to commit to now the other thing that the u.s. is expected to push for and we've heard this from u.s. treasury chief stephen a chin at the g. seven summit is the u.s. wants structural changes to the chinese economy now what does he really mean by that now the u.s. and some other countries are saying that china's unfair trait china is guilty of unfair trade practices and a large part of this complaint centered around intellectual property rights now at the moment foreign companies wanting a presence in china are sometimes required to do this via
5:06 am
a joint venture operation in which case they sometimes have to transfer technology or share technology with the local company foreign companies see this as effectively forcing technology transfer and they're also allegations that the chinese don't do enough to protect intellectual property rights and then there's also the case of chinese for chinese government subsidies which many foreign countries say that allows chinese. an ease to use goods and flood the world market with cheap goods so these structural changes how they vote will be much more difficult for china to commit to than the specific targets that the u.s. is seeking and florence just briefly we've seen a number of events in the past two days the u.s. imposing tyrus on its allies in the g seven finance ministers responding angrily so what impact is all of this having on those u.s. china talks if if any that's right so it was quite
5:07 am
surprising that the u.s. went ahead with tariffs on its allies and it's going to make it more difficult for the u.s. to come to find other countries who are going to come together and want to confront china what they say are china's unfair trade practices because remember many of these countries also share the same complaints against china intellectual property theft chinese subsidies allowing overproduction and therefore world markets being flooded with cheap goods especially steel and aluminum because a large part of these tires were meant to confront cheap. cheap metal and cheap aluminum and china is meant to be the target but instead the tires have been posed on u.s. allies and then the u.s. is going ahead with these tariffs is in essence bypassing world trade organization proceeding as it's acted unilaterally so in a way it ceded some sort of moral authority there by making it more difficult for it to find partners to want to work together with it in confronting china but we

also have. the china u.s. about face from a couple of days ago when it says it's when it said it was going to go ahead and impose tariffs on chinese goods when it had said that they were going to put this on hold so it will leave u.s. officials as well as chinese officials without much certainty that what they work on this weekend is going to have much effect florence thank you. now the israeli military says its jets have targeted ten sites belonging to hamas in the gaza strip and just two munition manufacturing and storage sites were hit earlier israel said it intercepted at least one rocket fired from gaza over the city of steroids rocket sarin have been activated in southern israeli areas bordering the gaza strip. well earlier on saturday thousands of people attended the funeral of a young palestinian medics shot dead by israeli forces at the gaza border on friday twenty one year old on the job and volunteering since the weekly protest began in march but since then israeli soldiers have killed at least one hundred twenty one

palestinians protesting for the right to return to their homes will have a force that was the funeral of han eunice in gaza. the body was nice and is now being brought to once a mosque here i counted as there is a huge mixture of emotion here we've seen some of her colleagues crying applied it to themselves but here as a body comes in way hearing shots of anger and defiance there has been a huge reaction publicly across gaza to the death of this young woman she was shot on the friday protests as she went to the aid of somebody himself he'd been shot near the border fence and she died of her injuries that are listed in medical association saying that she was shot through the chest and she died of her injuries we spoke a short while ago to a colleague who was right next to her when that fatal bullet struck her and she lived in a southern money raising our hands who were in our uniforms were about twenty

meters from the fence and they could see us easily so we thought they would shoot at us as we arrived they shot two bullets one had resigned in the chest and the second went through my other colleagues and then hit me in the leg two bullets they hit three of us killing resign. omissions are running very high here at the cemetery where rosen has been brought to be buried and we've been seeing people trying to stop others from walking on top of graves we've seen a father come in his face entirely awash in tears but we spoke to mahmoud her colleague earlier on he said that she was a young woman of sweet nature someone who never tired of risking your own life to help others the israeli army says it is investigating the reports of her death but as far as people here are concerned they are outraged that someone. he was volunteering as a medic trying to help other others who'd been injured by israeli sniper fire a self the victims are most often barghouti is general secretary of the palestinian national initiative he explained why the killing of on the job has resonated with

so many people. shooter prison so very clear and straightforward and justice committed by those that only stayed she was a very beautiful young. you wanted to help people she didn't put us as a first provider and she wasn't violent it with us it made because if so. since the beginning of the peaceful marches in gaza she engaged in to help people injured she did her best to help as many people as she can although she was injured one slightly she continued to do this work and she was very committed. and on trade there were two closures as you know and this is the only attack peaceful nonviolent the most looters many of them were shocked by it as they go in to reach them and help them with the issue of the first to provide and that they were

very clear in their white cords who were clearly mythical people who at the end. and she afterwards do you know and injure people and i mean shutter shot turned in the chest and. there was nor justification whatsoever for not only don't it's not but shoots such a beautiful young girl who was just that i think to people who were injured i'm just was dying to know that he leave the pain. in my opinion the kissel sort of sound and it is sense now yeah lutie of the situation in palestine. a struggle between an oppressed between you or pressed people and the rest between occupied people and then occupier between people who want life and peace and justice and health and those who are going to deprive them from all. and israeli soldiers of shot dead a palestinian man in the city of hebron in the occupied west bank israeli forces say troops fired a thirty five year old when he tried to run them over with his car. but also to

come here on the news hour including. nobody understands what we're feeling ok because many people there are in their homes their own kids six months after hurricane maria hit puerto rico hundreds are still homeless and federal aid is running out. and stepping up the fight against the bone a virus in the democratic republic of congo. and in sport a win for serena williams the french open sets. all this rivalry. now there's been another day of violence in nicaragua where protesters are accusing the government of repression the red cross says at least two people manning barricades were shot dead in messiah in the capital managua weeks of unrest between security forces pro-government militias and protesters have led to the formation of

neighborhood watch groups in the u.s. has called on the government to end the violence which has killed more than one hundred ten people since mid april manual or pollard joins us by skype from managua you at the site where the clashes took place today tell us what happened emmanuel. again those clashes that took place today happened in messiah this is a town that's about forty five minutes outside of month now while the capital city where we are at this point when we arrived at the scene the clashes had just finished taking place the scene was still very tense it was it's actually quite difficult by the time that we'd heard that the that the violence was taking place the police were using live ammunition against demonstrators we had a hard time arriving at the scene because there are several roadblocks it's quite difficult at times to get around the country because of these roadblocks that are set up by the by the demonstrators themselves but when we arrived at the scene it was very tense people are very suspicious of anybody coming into this community

that's from the outside because these types of attacks by paramilitary groups attacks by gunmen and attacks by snipers have become quite common but we spoke to volunteer doctors who have confirmed that assad at least two people were killed during that clash with with paramilitary forces to men but again tensions are high these paramilitary groups continue to come into these. to these communities and at times are shooting indiscriminately so they are not only targeting demonstrators they're targeting the the civilian population at large and what's the atmosphere like mao is there a sense the violence could spark again where we are in monoglot it's quite quiet at the moment it gets quiet at night but that doesn't necessarily mean that nothing is going to happen i have to stress that just because it's quite just mean that these demonstrations are going on there are ongoing protests there are students that are barricaded inside the universe.
