the u.s. market he went on to say that prime minister justin trudeau of canada acted so meek and mild during our g seven meetings only to give a news conference after i left saying that u.s. tariffs are kind of insulting and he will not be pushed around very dishonest and weak our tariffs are in response to his two hundred and seventy percent on dairy well these are the comments that trump is referring to particularly did not take lightly the fact that it's based on a national security reason that for canadians who either themselves or whose parents or community members have stood shoulder to shoulder with american soldiers and far off lands in conflicts. from the first world war on words. that it's kind of insulting i have made it very clear to the president
8:51 am
that it is not something we relish doing but it is something that we absolutely will do because canadians are polite were reasonable but we also will not be pushed around. let's get more this from our correspondent john hendren who's in quebec city and of course that war of words has begun in the meeting has barely finished john. that's right so we thought that the g.'s evan was divided when the meeting started on friday morning before donald trump had come and by the time he left it looked like they had papered over the differences all of them signing a statement of principles with some vague wording about free trade and other things but in the end they are more divided than ever apparently trump reacted so badly to trudeau those words that he took to twitter on air force one in order to revoke their signing that he made just the signature that the u.s. representatives were still to have made it he said he's going to stop them from
8:52 am
doing that and he's apparently looking into new tariffs so the trade war that everyone else here at the g six had hoped to deescalate has in fact accelerated it's hard to say where it will go from here or whether these guys will make up but what's interesting is that trudeau has used language like that before and trump in the past just fired back with some tweets criticizing trudeau criticizing the way canada and europe operate and trade barriers this one though really seemed to affect trump and now that you seven appears in disarray indeed that's the trade war is leaving as i think we all assume it will be the canadian prime minister obviously will not like the description given to him by trying but i'm more or less calling him a liar. exactly endo week one which the canadian prime minister cannot really afford with his domestic audience here he was trying it seemed to tread the line
8:53 am
between being diplomatic and being strong as canadians wanted him to do people are upset about these trade tariffs but trump is also concerned about his domestic audience he wants to look strong which of course is why instituted these measures that he keeps talking about farmers for example being hurt by canadian trade tears well that is. that is trump's base and he is doing his best to protect them ahead of midterm elections that are important to trump coming up this year he's afraid of his republican party losing control of congress so this goes deep and it doesn't look like trump is about to back down and we will be interested to see what response if any comes from today though and the rest of the g six leaders but we have not had any up to now. for the moment john of course continue to follow the story thanks so much john hundred think we're back city let's cross over to colleen robertson these the vice president and fellow at the canadian global affairs institute joins me now from ottawa in canada via skype good to have you with us on
8:54 am
the program sir just your initial reaction to the statement being made by president trump about your prime minister well it's like living next to her neighbor who's gotten increasingly crazy and you try and be polite to him but he he he just keeps pushing back and he pushes all those around him so i think that. canadians will sort of view this says just another in what has been a series of irrational statements from the president united states that he is singular where there's never going to president like him but. we have to we have to deal with the united states and our prime minister will continue to deal with them and there it is is it going to be difficult because of a trade war is more likely as part saw correspondents in various analysts suggesting the language that has been used more or less calling your prime minister a liar is quite tactless on the diplomatic front how is that going to sour
8:55 am
relations between ottawa and washington d.c. . well i think the prime minister understands the most important relationship that internationally should be as it is that with the president ited states so i think he will continue to try to work at that and i don't think he'll be pouring or on this he'll just wait because who knows where trump will be tomorrow or whether trump will phone him tonight as he as he does. what is important is that canada and mexico in the united states are still negotiating in there an effort to. restore and bring new vigor to the north american partnership trump has not yet council that he has threatened to do this during the campaign he's trying to do it a couple of times and when he talks about farmers will in fact farmers are the most to sit for us in wanting to maintain the relationship with canada mexico because canada mexico their two biggest markets of course in recent days we've seen the
8:56 am
canadians draw or policed a very long list of potential products that will be sanctioned if this trade war continues how do you see this being resolved in terms of both on the diplomatic front and on the trade front and how do you think canada will proceed both with its trade minister with the prime minister the foreign minister told the whole trying to you might say calm the uneasy waters at the moment. well i think that we will these tariffs that the president talks about in fact don't take effect on should do until july the first and they are in response to u.s. tariffs on opinion still momentum we are the biggest suppliers of steel loomed united states but they are also the biggest suppliers of steel to canada and in fact they have a surplus on steel and so the additional terror so you talk about another goods are to make up for the differential that is the american surplus on their trade with canada they won't be put in till july the first emerged targeting them specifically to try and get out to members of congress mitch mcconnell paul ryan nancy pelosi
8:57 am
because our sense is increasing that congress will act as a kind of check on the president the the application of checks and balances in the american system in to keep the trade relationship going certainly our foreign minister will be talking to secretary of state or trade in our foreign ministers also responsible for trade so she'll be talking as she does almost every day with the united states trade representative and every talks with the commerce secretary you know our ambassador will be working tonight to to to talk to just sort of thing you see where things are we know mr trump is many things on his mind he is off to singapore now to meet with kim jong un we'll hope this is just a passing phase but we will prepare and idea and our prime minister said we will apply these tariffs on july the first you are full of diplomat yourself just from sort of from your sort of diplomatic experience when you have these spats with the one world leaders having spats with each other how do you actually try and dare i
8:58 am
say it in a very simplistic way resolve these issues when you know you actually want to kohl and say what on earth are you talking about and how are we going to solve this will . well this is unique because we've never had an american president like donald trump and. but as i say it will be all hands on tonight to sort of talk to an american in counterparts not just in government but those in congress just to say look we don't here's where we're at and we are finding that there is in fact a fair bit of appreciation that the canadian position and i think that's putting some pressure on the administration to continue for example the negotiation with canada it he talks about the farmers again the farming community united states has been the most active in pushing the president to as they say do no harm to the agreement as our manufacturers our next biggest or biggest traded commodity of course are autos and the auto industry is saying do no harm to this this stuff
8:59 am
works on a north american basis so that's what that's what we'll be doing but you can be sure that tonight our foreign minister and our senior diplomats are going to have an evening of talking to their american counterparts just to sort of assess what is the president talking about and how seriously do we take this but one thing we've learned with mr trump tomorrow's another day and tomorrow will be another tweet and who knows what will be indeed we'll have to wait and see i'm sure colleen robertson thanks very much for joining us from autumn a sigh of relief we share your time on al-jazeera thank you while division has been the talking point at the g seven unity is the theme in china where world leaders are meeting for the annual shanghai cooperation organization summit chinese president xi jinping is hosting the event which includes that he does of russia iran and india his belt and road initiative is expected to dominate the two days of talks is a trade program that spans sixty plus countries across asia the middle east europe and africa and a tank it is a political and economic affairs commentator he says the contrast between the g

seven and the s.d.o. summit is staggering. it's a tale of two summits the best of times and the worst of times on one side of the world it is the worst of times if a family fractured instead of showing unity their bickering amongst themselves instead of creating a trade group they are talking about trade wars on the other side that putin received a medal of honor from. it seems like a love fest it's gearing up to be something very interesting and it is a definitely a counterpoint it is also perhaps the focus of a new initiative that will link up the c.e.o. with the belton road initiative it is really the g six versus one at this point is despite the nice things said by the italian side it is clear that the u.s. is isolating itself and that is where a lot of people are going to be looking at.
