let's bring in diplomatic editor james who is in singapore for this historic summit so a few hours some some meetings have already happened bigger meetings to come all these details still being worked out where things stand right now james. well proprietary meetings are what have been taking place in the last few hours two hours in the morning and they've actually sat down again senior officials from both the north korean and the u.s. side in a hotel near where i am i think they're working out what they might be able to say in some sort of statement or declaration at the summit on shoes day president trump has been meeting the prime minister of singapore with him was and secretary of state mike pompei oh he's released a very brief statement we've had substantial in detail meetings to date the president is well prepared for tomorrow's engagement with chairman kim the u.s. position manes remains clear and unchanged that a statement from the u.s.

secretary of state ahead of this important summit clearly we're already it's an important moment the first time since the korean war almost seventy years ago that the leader of north korea and the u.s. are in the same city. a moment of history the leader of north korea first and then the u.s. president several hours later arriving in the same city this on off summit is now effectively on the way the face to face meeting aimed at diverting a nuclear crisis taking place on choose day kim jong un borrowed a plane from china to bring him here he's probably the least well traveled leader on earth in charge of his isolated nation for six years he had met no other foreign leader until this year. he came to singapore with his own body guard unit and brought his own armored limousine on

a cargo plane again supplied by china remarkably it's only nine months since president trump told the u.n. general assembly he was prepared to annihilate pyongyang diplomacy did finally kick in with north korea sending a delegation to south korea's winter olympics in february. a historic summit at the demilitarized zone between the two koreas was followed by a secret trip by then cia director mike pompei oh the first of two visits he made to pyongyang they paved the way for this summit in singapore trump briefly canceled this summit last month and he's repeatedly threatened to walk away if he doesn't believe the negotiations are serious a tough line but at the same time trump has been sending mixed messages to kim before he flew to singapore he was asked what he wanted to achieve at this historic summit but i had a minimum i do believe at least we'll have many each other we will have. seen each

other hopefully we will have like each other and will start their process i would say that would be the minimal no demand then for the north korean leader to commit to completely give up his nuclear capability but experts say that kim is also well aware that trump is unpredictable and that he's coming from another summit the g seven where he fell out with his closest allies a meeting where the optics are positive meaning try and get a handshake with kim jong un and it agreeing to some kind of nuclear the need nuclear deal would go a long way to mescaline for president from as much as it would for the. north korean state committee so in in all likelihood i think the north koreans are. upbeat but they are careful with the same time. as kim had a brief courtesy meeting with singapore's prime minister news emerged that he was planning to leave the city just five hours after his meeting with trump that

suggests there will not be lengthy substantiative talks but we shouldn't discount the idea that the north korean side may perhaps of those proposed timings as a negotiation tactic. eighteen hours to go until this historic meeting the first ever between a sitting u.s. president and a leader of north korea let's discuss all of this further with my guest alexander neal from the international institute of strategic studies you heard the statement i read a moment ago from secretary of state pompei or he said the u.s. position is clear this is this term technical term among you disarmament experts explain what that is see if it yes it's quite a mouthful it's complete verifiable irreversible denuclearize ation and that's the bottom line for the united states that's what the state department's been saying that's what the white house has been saying although perhaps trump has had to be educated in the vagaries of just the fine details. what c.v.

it actually means but i think the bottom line really is both sides they want a peace deal i think that's the lowest common denominator they've got this far and there's so much political capital invested in this that to not walk away with with something along those lines would be quite catastrophic at this point they've set the bar pretty low for this first meeting if you listen to what president trump has said he just wants to get on and meet the man and see if he can do business with him but in terms of denuclearization you just been talking about how far apart are they really i think they really are quite far apart on that because kim jong un he's basically put is regina legitimacy at stake and that's linked to a nuclear deterrent there's those also the very public spat with bolton about the whole issue of you know whether or not they were going to go for the libya option

or not and that and that would have been a personal affront to kim because what they're talking about is potentially his ultimate demise that was the libya solution so what they're going to be looking at i think is starting off with some cosmetic approaches some choreography and then they're going to perhaps move in an incremental way towards or perhaps find some middle ground see very light perhaps or start working on aspects of c. of it the bits that actually fits the mold for the united states and then perhaps move on beyond that at a later stage but i think as you've as you've rightly said this is a handshake opportunity there's been a lot of choreography and tricks associated with that i can see a scenario where we'll have president trump declaring how his story kitties when he when he meets in less than twenty four a time when they were going to start this great process do you have a fear that it could be

a process that is going nowhere. there in the end if if it breaks down down the line what are the other options well there is always the possibility of a trump walk out there's a possibility of a kim walk out but unfortunately the options should all of those fall apart are actually pretty stark pretty dire. the the koreans the north koreans would like to see the chinese the u.s. garrison on singapore they want to off the korean peninsula so to the chinese but that that's off the cards that's something that was stated very clearly at the shangri-la dialogue ten days ago when secretary for defense jim mattis said very specifically that that matter is something between the south koreans and the united states this whole question of trying camera rapprochement is not not part of that equation at all.
