5:00 am
now you can come up with the right or wrong plastic waste of fries on al-jazeera how do you. think. this is al-jazeera. has i'm sick of this is the news hour live from dod coming up in the next sixty minutes and shake smiles and now apparently home visits donald trump and kim jong un accept mutual invitations to each other's countries. the media mega merger a t. and t. is given the green light to buy time warner what will this mean for consumers. what's in a name why macedonia will no longer be known as macedonia. and
5:01 am
the penalty shootout for the right to host the twenty twenty six world cup morocco takes on mexico and canada and the united states. the warming us north korea relationship has taken another unexpected turn kim jong un and donald trump have apparently accepted invitations to visit each other's countries that's according to a report from the north korean state news agency the long time adversaries met for the first time in singapore on tuesday there's no published timeline for the visit simply that they would happen at a quote convenient time diplomatic editor james bays joins us live from singapore and james light the agreement they signed in singapore these mutual visits are short on details. very short on detail and
5:02 am
president trump has also been speaking about this on air force one where he's had some brief comments to the pool of reporters a small group of reporters are allowed to travel on each trip on air force one and he simply says that yes i would like to invite chairman kim to the white house at some point as this proceeds and i think he's making the condition that it does proceed and that they live up to their commitments of denuclearization which were made in that declaration that joint statement that came out here in singapore so i don't think we're anywhere near the state the state visits actually taking place and being scheduled but certainly they've talked about the prospects of such visits and the lack of details aside is this another sign james of north korea and merging from decades is this international recluse.
5:03 am
yes absolutely some have described this meeting here in singapore as north korea's coming out party a country that has been so cut off from the world it's worth remembering that until this year kim had been in power for six years and he hadn't met a single foreign leader so this is a very big change the four leaders he's met this year the big summits to see that he's had with president moon of south korea and now the fact that he's been here in singapore unlike his father prepared to travel by plane and this historic meeting with the u.s. president what could be ahead certainly could there be visits between him and the u.s. president. trump going to pyongyang him going to the white house one that we haven't even thought about yet but it's coming up in a few months time the u.n. general assembly north korea normally represented by its foreign minister but could kill. come to new york i suppose that now is
5:04 am
a possibility let's discuss all of this more with. a former senior u.s. diplomat let me talk to you about what happened here in singapore we'll get to watch eventually came out of it but first the way it was done with this very unconventional president you know the way diplomacy is normally done for example the thirty eight minute with the g. eight minute meeting between the two leaders just with interpreters not even take his very unusual yes absolutely unusual but i think if you look at what happened here in singapore athletes from him somewhat someone all up with a single word disruption and here we talked in the past about the art of the deal and president now it's really about the disruption of diplomacy and for him maybe it's all about the diplomacy of this russian to the process indeed was very different from the old days when many things were already worked out before the final summit which is more ceremonial and they sign something this is really been the opposite this is the beginning of that long process but kudos to all that were
5:05 am
involved you know my hope is that things will indeed lead to something more tangible than just that initial document that they signed yesterday you look at the initial document what do you think of what see needs to malts not to need to the fact that some of the things that the president said were agreed to in the document and perhaps the most important stopping those military exercises in south korea involving u.s. forces in south korean forces terrific question but when you look at the document you know the key is that the use of the word about denuclearization there's so much i would say. acronyms abbreviations you know what is c.v. id complete what verifiable irreversible dismantlement of the new the north's nuclear programs so that they're really begin to focus on that i think is a positive thing but what is the definition of that the other thing that you know i what we call a u.s. military army brat i grew up part of my life in south korea that we're going to focus on something like recovering the bodies. people killed in action missing in
5:06 am
action that might still be in north korea for me that's a terrific next step what will certainly wasn't in that document in some ways it seemed like more of an aside at the president's remarks was this whole notion about the u.s. military presence in south korea motion aside though its seriousness is one of the most important factors i will assume they are very serious issue but to your question it wasn't really in those four key points of the document and i think we've already seen perhaps a revisiting of that with some pushback already from the korean version of the white house blue house you know i think some people were taken aback by that so i think what is also key as we talk about this process is that secretary of state pump ale is firmly in place as a key next step we saw in that document is second pompei is going to meet with the appropriate counterparts in north korea or with from north where i'm not exactly sure where and then it is going to move forward you have the former ambassador for the united states to the asian development bank so economic development is something you know very much about president trump was talking about north korea he said they have great beaches you see that where they have
5:07 am
a better exploding cannons and he went on about the opportunity of building condos and hotels how realistic is that model for north korea such an isolated nation since it's been seventy years ago you know i saw that maybe last maybe small but very clearly that is a vision that's a long time away but indeed i'm sure north korea's a beautiful place but it's also for me i would say an ugly place in terms of how north korea now treats its own citizens some of that really didn't come up so much as human rights i think very clearly that needs to be on the long term agenda we're talking about this ongoing process of what will be covered in a u.s. north korea dialogue so strictly to your point you know i'd say to investors out there i don't think now's the time to go into north korea you know president reagan which is how i began way back when i would always say trust but verify in dealing with the soviet union here i'd say don't trust and do verify so i think condos are a long long long ago. coming but it indeed that vision of
5:08 am
a peaceful and prosperous north korean my hope a united korea one day may well include condos down the line about sort of curtis chen with some investment advice thank you very much. james thanks for that james bays live for us their hands. at times promise to stop the joint military drills with long time ally south korea was a big concession and it's something the north has demanded for decades it is sure to rattle not just north south korea though but also japan patty cohen reports from washington. there was plenty of unprecedented things happening here but this was a pretty big one we will be stopping the war games which will save us a tremendous amount of money unless and until we see the the future negotiation is not going along like it should. but will be saving a tremendous amount of money plus i think it's very provocative those words have
5:09 am
never been uttered by a u.s. president who in the past have called the massive drills with south korea defensive and military exercises war games provocation that is what the north koreans call this many in the pentagon and south korea were shocked at the concession and experts say that might have a real world impact and there's unexpectedness and unpredictability that comes along with the time but an illustration that could make them turn tell turn of. operations where affectively south korea and japan decide to develop their own nuclear weapons because they feel like they can depend on the us nuclear umbrella any more the political reaction was largely split along the political divide even the most hawkish republicans holding back criticizing the president i don't think canceling a war a war game is going to matter over the arc of time the one thing that i would violently disagree with is removing our troops kim jong il is a butcher. and he's a butcher of his own people. and. trying to reason
5:10 am
with someone like that is like trying to hand feed a shark. doesn't mean you can't do it but you get to do it very very carefully democrats were less supportive i have to be honest with you this is the weakest statement i have ever seen come out of any engagement with north korea much less at the highest ranking of the president of the united states meeting with can joe what the united states has gained is vague and on verifiable at best what north korea has gained however just and lasting it's not clear if this will change anything over the long term for the relationship but it will change what these military exercises are called in the future provocative workings even the us president thinks so. al-jazeera washington. our u.s. federal judge has approved the merger of two the world's biggest media companies
5:11 am
the ruling allows communications giant eighteen t. to take over time warner in an eighty five billion dollars deal the judge said the government had failed to prove that the deal would harm competition or adversely affect consumers i'll tell you jackson is a financial analyst she joins us via skype now from dover in the u.s. state of delaware thanks very much for being with us so let's get straight to whether this is a good or bad thing for the customers of these two giants what is this deal going to mean for consumers. well ultimately it's going to mean for the consumers that they're going to have a little bit more opportunity but what the scary part is is that this is a president that's being sent which means others can do that and if we get to a point where we get a monopoly less competition means higher prices for consumers so that's something consumers really need to look out for when we're dealing with this type of merger now if you're a stockholder is probably a great thing eighteen c.
5:12 am
and time warner this is a big deal for them and it's very exciting and it's going to be a lot of people out of money but when you're a consumer at the end of day you have to make sure it doesn't cost you in the end and because we're may have less competition in the future because other conglomerates may want to do the same thing that may potentially mean higher prices and costs for cable in the future for consumers but the judge in this case obviously felt differently and part of his justification for it was actually backing eight hundred eighty and time warner's position which is that there are huge changes going on in this industry and that they had no choice but but but to do this in order to to protect their position what do you say to that you know eighty and he really did this because they're trying to stay in the competition with amazon netflix and the facebook and it really makes sense to do that but at the end of the day when we have the last competition that's out there
5:13 am
which most of these major media conglomerates can go out to la. can purchase the content providers what is that going to ultimately do for consumers now we may say it will lessen the cost because now there's more options out there but i do think ultimately later on down the line we have fewer competition that's out there and it potentially costs for consumers well they're also trying to do more customize ads for consumers as well which means it's going to be hitting on the pockets with the advertising i've been on a professional level on a business level this is an opportunity for eighteen c. is the best thing for eighteen c. and time warner i just need consumer. be very big a message on for example amazon it was a great deal when they decided to go in that market with groceries and then all of a sudden they're increasing their monthly membership fee nobody saw it coming but potentially that could happen hopefully it won't hopefully this will be
5:14 am
a great thing for not only eighteen c. time warner to stockholders but it will be an awesome thing for consumers but this can potentially be the precedence that it could go up cross global rounds within that so just be very cognisant so if this if this is going to open the floodgates then for more merges what are the types of mergers do you think we might see in this industry when we know that comcast is already trying to do some mergers out there any provider that's out there could purchase their supplier so it's not like they're purchasing their competition it's actually a vertical integration so they could purchase all of their suppliers and so right now we have eighty n.t. that's purchasing a lot of the news content our content providers now some people say it's not going to have an effect on content we'll see about that it may not cost more consumers dollars in the short run but it may cost consumers some information i don't know but we're see i'm hoping it's going to be
5:15 am
a great thing but i do know that this is going to set a precedence for global things to happen as well. tara jackson good to speak to you thanks very much for being with us thank you are the british government has conceded that parliament will have some say in the final deal to leave the european union it's being seen as a defeat for hardline brags it is who also want to leave the e.u. customs union but it doesn't resolve the lack of clarity over what regs it will actually look like honestly report. she spoke about all about courage it's tortuously slow and it's painful to watch so many times the british government has said it wants to do one thing over bricks it's only to be overturned and so again prime minister to resign may have not wanted parliament to have any say in what deal she negotiates with the european union but enough of her own m.p.'s threatened to rebel to force yet another climb down one minister even resigned so he could
5:16 am
speak more freely. i urged my parliamentary colleagues to follow my lead and vote to give audrey to situation this house of commons our constituents and our country the powers it needs to leave our children a legacy of which we can all be proud thank you so want to make of the government's continuing inability to make sense of brecht's it on behalf of people in places like sunderland in northeastern england who voted for it see it runs a small business selling machine parts to begin destry he wants out of the european union completely and he can't understand why the government seems incapable of doing it's pretty stern no i want to push to stand up for england stand for the table. push around and. they just don't let the new do it to the frightened lot as it is inc. all the see all the right things and
5:17 am
then when it comes to doing it. the work. and those businessmen who would back the conservative rebels like the boss of this factory are just as frustrated they rely on an economic relationship with the european union and yet the government can give them no assurances that that will carry on i'm a strong supporter of the u.k. in general however i think the or norm is the thing that we're frightened of more sed and i don't think the government's doing the best it could to give us the information and communication on the next steps in what's likely to happen on an exit from the entire economy of some zealand relies on the giants nisson on its feet a company is a failed brecht's it could easily lead to this factory relocating to consonant well europe yet neither nissen nor anyone else knows what shape bricks it will take and back in london all is discord perhaps the best indication of the divide in society over what's happening in parliament moments is on the front page of some of the
5:18 am
newspapers in the brics it supporting press the conservative rebels who want parliament to be given the final say on a votes or describes as betrayers and traces and yes in those newspapers which supports them they described as heroes it's hard to escape the conclusion that this continues to be a country politically speaking at war with itself largely al-jazeera in westminster . we've got plenty more ahead on this news hour italy sends two ships there transport to spain six hundred twenty nine migrants it's refusing to accept. after making new friends in singapore president trump has more hostile words for one of america's closest allies and. i'm a little worried the most all those things if it runs all the top of my brother but i was going to go over twenty twenty six world cup i'm staying lights back on.

. for far right leader and new interior minister. it is an election promise made good italy has said it will no longer europe's refugee camp. i'm happy to be able to give the italian people the first piece of what they asked for. is italy's new strongman leading the charge with his anti establishment coalition partners the five star movement and basking in high approval ratings for it. what is astonishing in this despite being judges populists this poll this is also very popular in italy there isn't a tremendous amount of people in these days saying yes we have to close the borders yes we have to control the access of immigrants yes we have to send them back home but timing isn't coincidental there's an meeting at the end of june that will consider changing the rule that asylum must be claimed in the country of first

entry it's that rule that is put italy on the frontline of europe's migration crisis italy's treatment of those aboard the aquarius is notice to the rules that she also changing each state has the right to manage his boundaries. but these should not put into doubt the. human rights our deepest concern is that if the rescue will be weakened by different policies by different arrangements this risk this journey might become even more risky. many women and children will continue to make the crossing to lose their focus to southern europe at the hands of unscrupulous people smugglers they probably won't be told but it just got much harder and more dangerous journey home road.

now the world cup starts this week but before that fever will be meeting on wednesday to decide who will host the twenty twenty six event two bids are in contention the first is a joint bid from canada mexico and the united states both the u.s. and mexico are former torment hosts and meanwhile morocco is making its fifth attempt to be the host nation a simple majority from fee first two hundred eleven member so she is all that is needed to decide the host nation. travis waldron is a sports reporter for the huffington post he joins us live from washington thanks for being with us now the smart money and money is the operative word here is on this so called united beat from the three countries the u.s. canada and mexico. over
5:28 am
a much smaller country of morocco is that is that how you see this playing out as well well i think when it first launched that was definitely where the smart money was and if you listen to the north american officials from the u.s. canada and mexico. they've said in the last few days that back in february and march they were a little bit less confident but they're starting to feel more confident again now that they have the votes they'll need are there that they're very close to the votes they need i still think the allure of the money in the revenue from a potential world cup in the united states and the majority of it will still take place in the united states but also in mexico and canada will be too much for a lot of these countries they seem like they have most of south america in the caribbean on their side and the question will come down to what europe and asia do most likely but i would still at this point be pretty shocked if the united states mexico and canada joint bid isn't the winner tomorrow morning what about the
5:29 am
potential for the so-called trump factor in this that this is the kind of rumblings of. discontent from from african many african nations and muslim nations over. position on the muslims and what he said about. certain certain african countries as well could that play into their decision to favor morocco perhaps. it certainly could i think that was definitely a reason why we if you go back to two thousand and seventeen two thousand and sixteen the united states reached out to mexico and canada for a joint bid instead of competing with them in the rest of the world it definitely maybe gave them some cover to have mexico and canada involved in the bid if you ask the american officials they kind of have downplayed for the last six months to a year the effect might have at the same time fee for president johnny and tina
5:30 am
said that travel ban on for on refugees and immigrants from certain muslim countries could affect the the american bid. donald trump came out this week and said that no one would have any issues he of course won't be president when the two thousand and twenty six world cup happens so that's unclear but i think the the americans the people behind the north american bid really seem confident or at least are really making the argument that hey donald trump is not really involved in this and politics shouldn't be involved in this which we of course know they always are but they're definitely making the case that hey this is a bid about soccer in the united states canada and mexico not about the president of the united states what about the way this this vote is being decided this nation is being decided the way it's being voted because the criticism that was made last time around when two countries were. named qatar and russia it was
5:31 am
basically a small group of top executives about a dozen or so them just gathering in a room in switzerland and this time around it's all of the individual nations that are going to decide is that does that go some way to making it more transparent. we'll have to see it certainly seems on its face to be more transparent because fifo has said they're going to release the results of the vote they're going to show us how people voted it's led to people kind of tracking how the votes are going and where people are and where different nations and federations are the hope is that it will be more transparent at the same time you know fee for released results of how they evaluated the big and we don't know if those are having any effect on anyone you know it will have to see how it works this is the first time they've they've done it this way and when it comes to feed it's always kind of let's see what happens before we start calling anything
5:32 am
a successor or definitely before we start on anything transparent but yeah should be fascinating to see. how this does play out that thanks for being with us travis waldron joining us there from washington thank you now still ahead on al-jazeera abortion law is coming under scrutiny in argentina but the catholic church has long dominated the debate. how palestinian protesters are using kites to fight with israeli forces. and its four world cup hosts russia confident they can advance past the group stage for the first time in more. the weather sponsored by qatar. however the rain is gathering once again for

southern china including hong kong and there has been heavy but it's been just not falling recently it was coming back its season it should be doing its concentrates got think on the southeastern corner there's a line to take the high ground and to the border this looks as if you're in chengdu hari where you might expect right on the. but about the thirty degree mark is clearly a lot of a lot of action for the south of taiwan and over the philippines if it was a very heavy rain recently overdue song it could be repeated showery feel like we have a further south than that and there's a hint here well more than a hint as evidence of significant shazahn soloway see which could be in the repeated forecasts or sudden borneo and even catching parts of java and sun and sumatra with two to the north of that k.l. for example mostly it's a cloudy picture there because a lot of the more shows coming out in the monsoon trough which doesn't just affect john it also affects india and bangladesh it looks as though the concentration is
