push on with their assault to capture yemen's largest port ahead of a u.n. meeting to discuss the fighting. more turbulence for british engine make a rolls royce as it cuts almost five thousand jobs. and tatiana sanchez with the day's board as the football wild card is finally here excited fans descend on central moscow ahead of the opening match between host russia and saudi arabia. welcome to the new u.s. secretary of state mike pompei is in china on the final stop of a diplomatic mission to brief regional leaders about the outcome of the singapore summit between donald trump and kim jong un and earlier pompei was in seoul to reassure south korean and japanese allies about how the u.s. will guarantee that north korea will get rid of all of its nuclear weapons more
1:02 pm
than that in a moment but first let's cross over to florence levy our correspondent in beijing following events for is there a chance really for the u.s. to explain their position and the vague agreement trump signed with north korea which is an ally of china. that's why i'm not sure what sort of details i might pohnpei or will be able to give the chinese officials considering that at his press conference in seoul he was asked what sort of process is this denuclearization of north korea going to look like and he just kind of gave something really quite vague and just said that denuclearization would be complete but wasn't really able to give much clarity on the process i suspect however pompei is visit to beijing is also not just to brief chinese officials but to make sure that they are on the same page when it comes to enforcing sanctions on north korea now if you remember. the trumpet ministration believes it will be
1:03 pm
tougher u.n. sanctions that finally forced north korea to change its approach to stop its nuclear and missile tests to offer an olive branch to south korea these were events that eventually led to the summit in thing up or taking place on tuesday and post these singapore summit u.s. officials have made it absolutely clear that these sanctions these tougher sanctions on north korea will have to remain now for those sanctions to remain as tight as they have been they're going to have to rely heavily on china china shares a border with north korea it is not just a very close ally but also it provides a sort of economic lifeline if you will ninety percent of north korea's trade is with china china is also the main access point when it comes to accessing international financial system so it's going to be very important it's going to be crucial that the u.s. and other countries have the support of china when it comes to maintaining their
1:04 pm
sort of sanctions pressure on north korea and we've already seen that they may not necessarily be on the same page we heard the chinese foreign ministry spokesman say just a couple of hours after the meeting with trump and kim had concluded on tuesday that perhaps it was time to consider thanks really for north korea and the u.s. position they've made it clear sanctions have to stay and they will have to get the chinese on board but they do to try to will be very pleased with certainly one part of the outcome and that was the issue of military drills in the region which is always china. absolutely the jewel suspension or the freeze for freeze as it's called it something is a position that china has been advocating china and russia have been advocating for a long time now and for them to have been hand it there's now this would have delighted chinese officials no doubt so you can imagine that going into the those meetings might pay or going into those meetings with chinese officials because he's
1:05 pm
due to meet not just the president but also the chinese foreign minister as well as china's top diplomat the state council there will be a fair bit of good will coming from the chinese side that the u.s. is now unwilling to suspend military drills with south korea because the chinese have often said that they you know they they they consider this as a kind of a threatening gesture taking place so close to chinese territory these drills take place in south korea on land as well as on in waters off the south korean coast and china also views these exercises not just as a threat but they also kind of see them as a way to send a message the u.s. containment of china which is of course rising in influence in the global stage and also increasingly becoming a rival offer us not just in trade but also in geopolitics so this will be something that they are very happy about and this will go towards. the chinese
1:06 pm
extending some amount of good will to the u.s. indeed of course so we will be coming back to later florence. and the state secretary of state for this press conference which we are expecting at any time so we'll hopefully see that from its leader in beijing more now on meetings in seoul were he was keen on paper over those hints or any disagreements and confusion among america's key asian allies weigh in he has more from seoul. after the hype of the summit with the sworn enemy can the explanation to the allies. america's top diplomat mike pompei i met with south korean president in solved before a trilateral meeting with the foreign ministers of south korea and japan which provided an opportunity to show unity on the issue of north korea the u.s. alliances with these two countries are absolutely ironclad the declaration signed by u.s. president donald trump and north korean leader kim jong un in singapore was vague
1:07 pm
there was no detail about how denuclearization will be achieved the north korean state media suggested that the two leaders had agreed to similar taney s actions suggesting pyongyang could be rewarded along the way michael says that's not the case thanks and you really cannot take place until such time as we have demonstrated that north korea has been completely immune despite not being told in advance south korea's foreign minister says donald trump's decision to unilaterally end joint military exercises wasn't discussed in detail in thursday's meeting north korea believes the drills are a rehearsal for an invasion but the united states and its allies have always said that defense of japan says it's been assured by the u.s. that they suspension is contingent on progress on denuclearization but tokyo is still concerned about the possible implications concerning u.s. are ok exercise we believe about japan u.s.
1:08 pm
alliance as well as. deterrent based on them play an essential role in security in the norse used ajor south korean seem to be generally positive about what they saw in singapore they believe it's a step in the right direction but with something is significant is joint military exercises with the u.s. being given up soon want to know what north korea will do in return at the moment that seems to be very little if anything at all. while the diplomats were meeting all the adverse reason walked side by side in the. separating the two koreas this was the first high level meeting between the militaries in more than ten years in a sign that practical progress is being made but until concrete changes see north of the border doubts will remain about the commitment to keep promises that have been broken so many times before when hey al-jazeera soul stephen is
1:09 pm
a senior associate professor of politics and international studies at the international christian university joins me now from tokyo good to have you with us on the program with nike how important is it for like to explain sort of the precise language of the agreement that he signed along with kim jong un because he needs to bring the chinese on board in the right frame of mind. what within the context of the chinese he needs to convey to his chinese interlocutors that the deal is about incremental denuclearization of north korea of the korean peninsula that chinese national interest will be considered and that the denuclearization process really is not meant to inherits u.s. influence on the peninsula rather it's meant to. deescalate the tensions on the peninsula for the south koreans and the japanese however i think that the document
1:10 pm
that was signed in singapore needs to be explained in much more depth and there's great hesitations and concerns in in tokyo in particular that the deal doesn't go hard enough against the north koreans in particular denuclearization but also those other capabilities such as short range missiles mid range missile submarine systems as well as those chemical and biological weapons we should remember that north korea tested tested those systems in the sea of japan and over japan and there's a certain. concern that those weapon systems can be used against japan ok i get a little concerned about the military build up but obviously north korea house i mean in terms of the positioning of where china is in terms of the way that it's whether it has you might say the influence to bring north korea to the bargaining table i mean how how important is their role now as we much analysis about what
1:11 pm
sort of push they may have given to pyongyang to get to this stage what is their influence right now. i think their influence is is is rather positive in terms of moving denuclearization and deescalating tension in the direction of the north koreans rather than in the direction of the united states i say this for a few reasons first of all i think it wasn't the american maximum pressure that brought the north koreans to the table it was them securing a strategic nuclear deterrent they gave them the confidence that they could engineer a meeting with donald trump as a nuclear equal beijing's very happy with this position the engagement of kim regime whether it was into china with united states south korea and gauge that process means that diplomacy is back on the table that will make a military option in dealing with north korea very very difficult it will make it
1:12 pm
difficult in terms of a united front in terms of applying sanctions on north korea and this suits beijing very very well beijing does not want conflict on the peninsula it's concerned about how the conflict and u.s. presence on the peninsula will affect its own national interests and the fact that this maximum engagement process of of the kim resume has moved in a very positive direction serves not only north korea but it serves beijing's interests of decreasing the chance for conflict in the region to see what have to be interesting times ahead. stephen thanks so much for joining us from nairobi thank you thanks for having me. politicians in argentina's congress are voting on whether to allow abortion in the first fourteen weeks of pregnancy they've been debating the highly contentious issue all night hundreds of people have gathered outside the congress in borders ariz while the session is taking

events football's world cup kicks off in russia in a few hours time the first virtual see the home side take on saudi arabia president vladimir putin says it's a chance for russia to show its unique culture to the world well let's cross over to rory chalons who is live for us in moscow a real chance for russia to put out a more positive image of itself for. well that's exactly it if you are looking for a convenient soft power purchase them hosting the world cup is one of the most you know sort of sensible off the shelf purchases you can make is a country there are a few other events that will bring a t.v. audience of billions watching what's going on in your nation you're also hosting visitors from all over the world is providing you can avoid the pitfalls of say stadiums not being ready or bombs going off it's
1:22 pm
a pretty good bets for burnishing your you know international image but having said that it's not a date certain certainly for russia which for many countries around the world particularly the west is certainly in the bad books it is questionable whether even hosting the world cup can actually make that much of a difference as i explain here in my report. the fans are arriving football chancer reverberating around city squares one of the biggest sporting parties in the world is upon us once again and it was here. it was eight years ago that fever announced the two thousand and eighteen host would be russia amid allegations of corruption and the world cup bidding process nevertheless by the may putin was pleased enough to accept with a rare speech in english been all that believe in these things and fear fine.

you can work. we will come but eventually we'll get. to that still. world cup moments is now here russian business news site estimates the full cost fourteen point two billion dollars and for that gets a chance to generate some much needed goodwill for the country because internationally russia has something of a reputation problem the annexation of crimea and the war in eastern ukraine the sports doping scandal allegations a russian interference in foreign elections the poisoning of a former spy and his daughter in england all these and more the list of perceived transgressions is long enough that political analyst under a kolesnikov suspects any world cup image boost will be limited to the home front. it's extremely important to to make such a gift to a domestic audience but for foreign audience russia will not change
1:24 pm
its image as a toxic toxic paul or toxic country. because there were so many events of other kinds that even the good organization of. can change and i think i'm sure. as he spoke at the feet of congress on wednesday. putin made it clear hosting the world cup isn't just about pleasing russians or international politics it's about giving visitors the best impression of russia to. our goal is that all our guests from football stars to simple fans feel the hospitality and cordiality about people that they learned the authentic multinational culture and unique nature of russia and that they would like to come back to us again it's something he's tried before four years ago russia hosted the winter olympics in sochi the region was flooded with cash to smarten it up for all the visitors for the world cup that's been done on

a much wider scale in total eleven world cup cities have received investment money from the huge metropolises of moscow and st petersburg to smaller cities like homs and some model the aim is to get fans and money to parts of the country far off the usual tourist trail making sure visitors get a russian experience is something that's filtered into the choice of this year's official world cup instruments to these. and there are not dates on the played in traditional russian folk music the sound of a full stadium banging these together is something you're going to hear a lot of in the weeks to come. for visitors to have the best possible time here of course involved keeping them safe the european championship two years ago in france violent clashes between english and russian fans were broadcast around the world since then russian police have come down hard on local hooligans they want no

repeat of such violence here and you're a security measures such as a strictly controlled id system are in place to prevent bombs and other attacks for a month the eyes of the world will be on russia everything has to go smoothly. well the fans are there henri and of course will be some very high profile visitors from the diplomatic sphere also taking in that very first match. yeah the kremlin says the at least twenty world leaders are going to be there at the opening ceremony this evening in moscow for the opening match as well of course the saudis and russia now headlining i suppose the list of leaders is the saudi crown prince mohammed bin salmond who's also going to be here to talk with putin about oil strategy and that sort of thing but then there are also people like the president of the presidium of north korea's supremes people's assembly kim

young nam and the new armenian prime minister nicolas passion young going beyond that so you get people like the president over as a vice president or better routes the bolivian president the kazakh president the kyrgyz president which basically paints a picture that this is with a few exceptions largely a kind of post soviet affair most of the leaders who are coming here are going to be from you know the former communist states of the u.s.s.r. and its near abroad and i think that kind of reinforces what i was saying in my report that we just watched that you know with western leaders annoyed at russia at the moment for a good many reasons most of them have chosen to stay away from this world cup well will continue to follow events with year area and the teams across russia that are reporting for c.n.n. i'll just say we're the month long football fest begins thank you. well i have some boxes here in a moment where the look at the weather here on al-jazeera then he has. also big to

from the capital. as the world this week turned its attention from iran's non-existent nuclear weapons to north korea's actual ones iran's working men and women tried to come to terms with the personal price they've paid for the years their government spent building a nuclear deal with one american president all. need to see a broken by another. then he has. also break the deal with north korea he's an unwise person and no one has confidence in him today he says something tomorrow he'll say something else someone who makes a pledge and an hour later takes it back is not human no one trusts him and as the iran nuclear deal is lost so is hope that it would bring a better future iranians don't just blame the american president for their circumstances they say their own politicians also share the blame for decades of hostility against the united states and an endless pursuit for position on the

international stage across the street a father of two says iran's people have no choice but to continue being patient but for him there is a difference between surviving and thriving and for the sake of his sons he says he plans on leaving the country is that us. i'm stressed my mind is always busy thinking about what will happen tomorrow what wrong decisions our leaders will make next how will they decrease pressure on the people i hope one day we will see our leaders make better decisions but now they think in a selfish way they don't think about their people they just pay attention to some specific interest. it's a common complaint from iran's working class their leaders have pitted them in ideological battles against so much of the world for so long it keeps hurting the economy and makes just getting by more difficult every year i mean. america has no pity for iran and iranians but also we have no power to stand against the of us so everybody says we should negotiate with them like north korea

is getting it. right now no one is happy with the economic situation any story go into it's like the price of gold things here get more expensive every week in some cases prices increased hour by hour it's almost certain things will get worse before they get better the value of iran's currency keeps falling more u.s. sanctions are set to take effect in august and european companies have already started leaving the country so for iranians there are more clouds on the horizon is in basra the old is here at the iran. the un general assembly has personally non-binding resolution condemning israel over the recent violence on its border with gaza one hundred twenty nations voted in favor of countries among them the us voted against it it is now mandated the secretary general to explore the possibility of an international protection force for palestinians israeli forces have killed at least one hundred twenty nine palestinians over the past ten weeks

tens of thousands of pregnant girls and teenage mothers across africa they're often denied banned and discouraged from going to school that's according to a report from human rights watch the group is calling on governments to urgently impose policies that allow students to stay in school while they're pregnant and return after giving birth a campaign titled leave the girl behind is being launched to help improve young mothers access to education ellen martinez is a children's rights researcher at human rights watch and joins me now from nairobi good to have you with us on the program when did your organization become aware that this young demographic of women in was being discriminated against. over years human rights watch has documented widespread discrimination of adolescent girls who fall pregnant and are no longer allowed to go back to school.
1:38 pm
two years ago in tanzania we found that the government has a very worrying discriminatory policy in place that keeps young mothers out of school despite this being the right to education. and in june twenty seventeen last year the situation escalated when the president of tanzania declared a ban on pregnancy girls going back to school now in my other countries such as south sudan. senegal human rights watch has found school officials often discriminated against and mothers and deny them the right to education what is it is it cultural is it religious social norms or stigmas that are attached to pregnancy or such young ladies adolescent mothers face a lot of cultural and social and financial barriers particularly those that are that are struggling those from poorer areas of the country that may not have
1:39 pm
the means but also their communities may not be supportive of girls falling pregnant outside of wedlock however what our report really tries to highlight is that governments have a responsibility to tackle these barriers but also to ensure that all girls can go to school free from discrimination and that they do not have policies in place that specifically target lesson mothers who are often some of the most vulnerable girls trying to get an education well let's bring in the country where you are right no no robey kenya is one of the few countries that does encourage these young ladies to rejoin education to pregnancy a law was passed in nineteen ninety four the problem is not many areas. in kenya know about it or implement it quite innocently. and i should say this is a reality and we found the twenty six countries have policies laws or practices in place similar to kenya which is very good news and shows that there is broad

support now in kenya as you say in one thousand nine hundred four the government adopted a reentry policy meaning that all school officials should be admitting girls back into school the issue is that there hasn't been proper dissemination of this policy also that there is no law that a company that binds school officials and that makes sure that any school official that turns down a school pregnant girl unless and mother faces consequences for depriving the girl of an education we're also we're calling on kenya as well as a group of twenty six countries to ensure that their policies are actually properly implemented and that they monitor that adolescent girls do go back to school and that they are supported fully to go back to school which is the what has happened there certainly in the months ahead ellen martinez from human rights watch thanks so much joining us from nairobi. when war crimes charges that were overturned against the former vice president of the democratic republic of congo. they have changed the complection of the country's upcoming presidential elections where last

losses that are related to that consolidation effectively what we're looking at here the majority of them are going to be middle management roles where the has been the overlap has been created by bringing five into three he's now stripping out that overlap one is to say is that it's necessary to make it a more dynamic company he wants it more efficient he wants to return it to profitable growth and he believes that that's going to happen within the next three years it's ironic as well i think as well that the five hundred thirty seven billion dollars of savings million dollars of savings that he wants come at a cost of some six hundred fifty million dollars over the next two years the long term effects he believes are going to be a a much stronger rolls royce of coal so with job losses apoel come hand in hand normally a reaction from the unions. yeah the union reaction has been rather measured it they know that the statement from warren

east specified there would be no compulsory redundancies among the union recognized staff and so that's reassuring and there was also a deal that was done last year to protect engineering jobs so from that point of view the unions particularly rolls royces main main business unit in dalby which employs more than fifteen thousand people. they all take it you know in a calm way that they can sound that one cuts it might be a little bit too deep they're worried about that but they are at the moment giving the benefits of the doubt to the chief executive and the city two is given a relatively positive reaction. rolls royce has up nearly three percent on the wake of. ruling child is clearly glad that he's getting a grip on the company's past problems and they believe that he is the mts attended around the c.e.o. so we follow that story in the weeks ahead thanks paul. let's head to the americas now where haiti has banned the british charity oxfam after some of its workers were

shouldn't be surprising their performance same cops they have qualified for most of them as they really pulled out one of his i beat belgium in ninety ninety four and i really need to prove themselves here what they. have won a much. they risen a great deal of expectancy that the russian same can go far more hard. do you think they have the edge they have more of the tradition maybe just playing at the luzhniki stadium in such a big match for the nation one of the biggest ever maybe their biggest ever will inspire the. just to get a result and i think the group already. you acquired favorites egypt possibly without. fully fit myself. russia can find a way through to the knockout stages while we will see now leave for more casual fans he might be watching the first ever world cup why should they look out for.

many of the world's population for even countries that have a qualified remember united states among the qualified i think a world cup is such an exciting thing and as i was mentioning earlier we talk so much about the politics of football football has become a business but it's such a wonderful thing when you get to thirty two. might the most of it while we can because when it changes to a little bit before what's not as good this is a perfect groups of four the knockout stages it's simple to follow and of course what's lovely is when a team that's not expected to do well starts to get a bit of momentum like costa rica did four years ago. the motion is beside itself with excitement who's going to do that this time that's what i'll be looking out for thank you very much he joined us from russia ahead of the world cup first match which begins later on and hay is

a record seven african titles but they're making just a third appearance at a world cup is this performer he's called seventy one percent of the goals in qualification although the team are sweating over his fitness and the last member of group europe why they are the smallest country by population to have ever won the world cup which they've done twice the last time was back in nineteen fifty. pain have replaced their coach on the eve of the tournament in dramatic fashion and under hero take over from a julian look at tag the former spanish international who played a four wildcard has coached for just one year at a second division five let me take it with back to after around madrid and now and here we take over there after the world cup. good times there's a ruckus only in the current circumstances a sip this responsibility with courage it couldn't be any other way i'm aware that

we have a group of staff and players have been working towards the world cup for two years i've been sporting director for the last seven or eight months and i understand if your body's great excitement i just couldn't let them down beyond that i have the greatest respect and affection for a lot to take for the great work he's done over these last two years without a doubt i wish him the best. but many spanish fans are actually on happy with this decision you have a bigger sample for it so i think the way it's been done is not the right one i believe real madrid should have waited until the end of the world cup to make the announcement to avoid destabilizing the national team. but there you go yes i find the decision to fire up to take you head of the world cup in correct an outrageous because we're two days away from the opening match against portugal which is the most difficult rival we're facing in the group i think leaving the team without a coach at this stage is going to be fatal because at the end of the day the dynamic they had until now is going to be lost i don't see much future for spain at
