a council that does almost nothing to protect human rights is a council that covers for human rights abuses uses and is therefore an obstacle to progress and an impediment to change. let's now speak to louis united nations direct to the human rights watch thank you very much for speaking to us and so we just listening to some of the comments made there from secretary of state might pompei a very strong criticism of the u.n. human rights council saying that they the body had failed in its objectives that it was. accusing the body of shameless hypocrisy is there a serious need for this body to reform from within. the human rights council has done some very good work highlighting human rights abuses around the world scrutinizing then bringing facts to light which enable

us to work on holding these countries to account in syria they set up a commission of inquiry that has been working for the last seven years uncovering ghastly abuses reporting publicly on them they set up a fact finding mission for myanmar where we've seen ethnic cleansing on a scale that is mind boggling they have looked at the problems in south sudan burundi congo north korea so many issues that the human rights council has looked at and it's done very good work this is not to say that the council doesn't have its shortcomings the council should be spending more time looking at issues like the human rights abuses in venezuela in egypt turkey the united states has complained that that israel is being treated unfairly israel

deserves criticism the problem isn't that israel is being criticized but some of these other issues that i mentioned like venezuela turkey egypt are not getting enough attention so the united states to as a member of the human rights council gets scrutinized an all countries are going to be subjected to periodic reviews this is normal but to say that this is a reason to walk away from it that that's like throwing the baby out with the bathwater this isn't doing anything for the victims of human rights abuses around the world and it tells us that america first means ignoring the victims that the minority has and none more or the vic. doesn't like you and i do you understand how it's somewhat unprecedented for the united states to be walking away does it undermine the u.n. human rights council in some way how might it impact that work and their efforts

well i hope it doesn't what is one thing that i'm worried about is that a country as powerful as the united states is and the united states has led the way in bringing the human rights council around to look at north korea sri lanka and other abusive situations bit by walking away we don't want the keys to basically be handed over to countries like china which has a very poor record on human rights and would like to use the council as a tool to shield itself from criticism saudi arabia could do the same or some of the other some other powerful countries that might try to turn the human rights council into a playground for them we certainly don't want that so we hope that the u.s. will remain engaged in some level after what walking away from it this is certainly
