processing facilities and they're already almost entirely full so they are going to need to have new space to do this and the question is how quickly can they get that up and running and can they do all of this in a way that doesn't violate previous court order that require the release of even in these family settings if you think children are there for longer than one day leon i've had a question from kelly who's watching on facebook live i want to throw it straight to you if i can does the federal government need permission to send children to other states like the ones have gone to new york she said you'll be transporting mine a children across state lines without parental permission is a felony what happened is this is a very complicated issue that was hotly debated obama administration. there are laws in place for what are called unaccompanied children who are not citizens of the united states there are fact all federal side to the ball and what those federal statutes written by congress saying is that when the government comes into
12:01 am
contact with an unaccompanied child they have to place them in the custody of the department of health and human services until a suitable guardian can come to pick up that jai and so we have had to build the shelters all around the country for a visa unaccompanied gender this instance is new because what the government is doing is it's taking a company children and converting them into unaccompanied children by virtue of the fact that they're putting that carried into criminal proceedings and so by doing that i have then they tried to bring in all of those protections again because suddenly they say well wait a second now we're faced with another company child and then they the ins they begin the process as if the child i've presented themselves along with them or strode in or isn't going to so moving forward again another one of our viewers his

comment in just said well basically this is a distraction because children will just be detained with their parents now do you think that would actually work as a deterrent because i guess what the top administration is trying to do here in the first place is to make this a terror and. i think the lesson him sir of the past twenty years have shown that this issue is not it's not one way or the other it's complex you need a combination of carrots and sticks and what i mean by that is this if you have a pure only deterrent policy then i have some point the question will be for the people coming to the united states is the situation worse in my country that it would be in the united states based on whatever deterrent exists on the vine and once people are familiar with that deterrence as centrally what happens as most people make the joins o.j. yes the situation in my country towards whatever the u.s. is willing they can't possibly be doing anything worse than the situation i face
12:03 am
here so that's what happened in these acts of love that if you create a more orderly process and combine it with sanctions for people who don't use that ordered orderly process such as for instance creating facilities either in central america or in mexico for people to make claims and if those claims are meritorious then tell the people yes we will accept you with us then i think you can start to get to a place where people won't show up illegally at the border of the u.s. has because they know they can go to the center right given a carrot to go to the center and us think this is what happens if you don't go to the center but that's the kind of solution we're going to need a long term to get this done leon fresco i'm glad we could talk to you to go in-depth on this one as well really enjoyed talking to you thank you. let's flip the coin now with leah because with all this anti trump sentiment out there online
12:04 am
on air and all that we do have to remember he's cool a strong support base and we saw it at the minnesota rally here and we really do need to keep that in mind his support base they're quite loud and they're very proud and many see the latest crackdown on asylum seekers as trump following through with his campaign promises take a listen. and the people that are coming here need to come here legally we would love it we hate we absolutely hate seeing children and families and anybody being being removed from their families but if you're coming to the united states you need to come here legally you need to follow the process and bring your family with you during that process so. for rules if you'd like to be here and we'd love to have you i mean immigration he said i came to the country about taking years ago. and life until it came like ike is sorry for their spirit of what they are by a lot of course by the democrats that these things can go the right way and they're

just seeing a different leadership but a bad player. according to a polling site five thirty eight aggregate a bunch of polls together trans approval ratings are at actually forty two percent and those numbers were updated just yesterday on tuesday you can see a slight increase there and his disapproval ratings are at fifty one percent now the immigration debate has been trending on twitter for days now but trump is the one who is leading that conversation today this tweet in particular he posted it it's a video of democrats who have been in office with the caption that reads don't worry the republicans and your president will fix it. our immigration system is illegal immigration is plain and simple all americans not only in the states most heavily affected but in every place in this country are rightly disturbed by the. illegal aliens entering our country people who should be here and those in the middle we
12:06 am
have to send a clear message just because your child gets across the border then doesn't get to stay and get everyone in that video are democrats many commented on that video hundreds dead one username sidney she said no child should have to go through this but their parents knew their risks when they came over here illegally when they came over here illegally i believe we should put more blame on the parents than our government they are just for filling the last set and place wait before trump became president now the media for the most part have not held back from criticizing trump's policies just a few hours ago time magazine revealed its latest cover featuring a terrified two year old girl from honduras sitting in front of a very disapproving donald trump the caption reads welcome to america. thank you lia we're going to wrap things up now with our white house correspondent kimberly halkett in washington d.c. kimberly i also this question at the top of the show what next i'm going to put that to you now talk us through what is actually expected of what is going to
12:07 am
happen next in the sickly speaking. there is a lot of clarity and so that's why some of the president's top democratic critics like nancy pelosi and also the top democratic congresswoman in the house of representatives than chuck schumer the top democratic senator they have sent a letter to donald trump saying that they are demanding that he put in place a plan that he presented congress about what is going to happen to the twenty three hundred children approximately that were subject to this child separation policy as well they say that this issue of the detention centers is not an adequate solution because it is coming not only taxpayers' expense but also is not something positive for the children growing up but we've also got the counter to that we've got the department of homeland security secretary curious to nielsen speaking earlier this morning talking about what your guest talked about a few moments ago and that is that this issue of child separations canal is new but
12:08 am
the issue of children being sent across the border unaccompanied to the hands of smugglers and traffickers is not new in fact children are up to ten thousand apparently according to the government have been housed by the department of homeland security in recent years so the focus is on congress right now there are two bills that are being voted on in the house of representatives today we're told but neither is expected to pass really this is going to require both democrats and republicans working together to come up with a solution that has been eclipsing congress for almost two decades and they right now seem to be more focused on finger pointing political point scoring than solutions kimberly without being crude given how sensitive the topic is but did anyone when you when donald trump signed off on that executive order did did did people when pressure on them political groups did anyone get anything positive out of all of this. in the short term i don't think so.
12:09 am
certainly there is the feeling that democrats have gained some traction and if found an issue that they can take to the midterm elections in november because there's no question the public did not like the child child separation policy two thirds of the public according to most polls did not like it and so that includes some trump supporters who just couldn't support that didn't like those images so certainly they are going to continue to work with that. you know i tend to be a bit of a pollyanna if you will i like to try and look at the bright side and see what good could come out of all of this if anything i think what donald trump has done because he is such a polarizing figure is he's gotten people engaged in the process putting pressure on their members of congress we're really going to have to watch the november elections because the only way things are going to change is if the lawmakers become accountable to the voters and i think in the long term there may be a glimpse that that is finally happening that the american people are finally becoming gauged in a way that may bring about change in the long term kimberly we love the fact that you're
12:10 am
a pollyanna we need in these times i think to really help kids live at the white house. read a great series on al-jazeera called we the people looking at issues in america leading up to the election this one was all about immigration and undocumented migrants specifically in the hispanic community of tell sorich lahoma. by the way this is from two thousand and eight george bush was still prison and then barack obama was months away from winning the election just to reinforce to you how immigration and kimberly was saying as well as always been a divisive issue if you search but we the people immigration you can go back into the archives at al jazeera dot com for that and you can get in touch with us as well consultations on screen had so many comments but more coming through now and thank you for the questions as well for our guests on the hash tag news grid it is good to get all your comments that i'm not going to read through too many of them because they are all a very very similar a lot of people in the united states saying how ashamed they feel of the whole situation and how inhumane it is that number there plus nine seven four five zero one triple one for non if you want to send us a video message perhaps or if you're out anywhere near the news we're covering and

having problems in the opening game it's obvious that shouldn't really come as a as a big surprise that their form in qualifying was not good they only squeaked through on the final round of the games they scored nineteen goals in eighteen games and for a team with their sort of silence i just simply isn't good enough they went through three coaches they now have progress some proudly in charge got huge successes chile and came from severe situation up with argentina he's all ghibli the best coach at this tournament so the question is whether or not he's had enough time to spend with the players and drill them into the sort of scene he wants and whether or not he still has to play is he can fit into a system that he likes and really over the last few weeks and months we've seen him stills take cream with systems tinkering with players and doesn't seem entirely happy that he's got the right starting line up east talks about the other players not being too reliant on. lino messy but that's a that's easy to say listening to interviews with some of the players who come into the school they say when you've got the best player in the world alongside you you

don't play your normal game you just think i'm going to give it to messi in the opening game he had eleven shots lino messy but couldn't score and he missed a penalty so he's under pressure and he'd love to make the sort of impact that christiane i was already made at this tournament scoring four goals as it is messi has and scored yet in desperate situations that sentiment and there were some live from moscow thank you very much for that well we'll go now to buenos ayres where our correspondent there is a ball is standing by with a huge crowd over there to raise or talk about the national team do you think the fans are still have hope in them. well i'm here in a fun zone and what you can see right behind me are mostly people from peru that have come here to watch the game but in a few hours we're going to see this place filled with people from argentina supporting argentina because they do hope that argentina will be able to turn things around that they will be able to pass this stage and make it and even
12:42 am
further most people have the knowledge that argentina has three has seen lots of difficulties since making it to the final two the final four years ago accusations of mismanagement within the argentine football association scandals you know missy leaving the team and then coming back they have seen at least three coaches during the qualifiers so there has been lots of problems with this team but people here are still holding that what happened back in one thousand nine hundred eighty six could happen again at that time argentina's team was criticized by the people people did not see that as a team and then they won the world cup so as i was talking earlier to india which isn't about the pressure and the the weight that they are now messi has to carry in his shoulder does he have to win a world cup to be at that level with diego maradona. while most definitely argentina is obsessed with u n n messi what we have seen since he failed to score

a penalty during the match against eyes that is the cover of the hughes papers interviewing psychologist friend also affairs and wondering why you cannot deliver what he delivers when he plays in the about a cell on our team where they're wondering whether he's depressed whether he's having marital problems whether he's who read about another offshore account that has been found so most definitely what most argentineans would like to see is what basically did all my own i didn't back in nineteen eighty six he led their team up that time to victory so there is a live from where the sides thank you very much for that. now imagine tens of millions of people are watching you have a throw in the wood just seconds left and your team desperately needs a goal what do you do while if you're iran's milad mohamedi are you tempted to launch it.

12:49 am
hello there i'm barbara starr you're watching al-jazeera live from london also coming up on the program siren is on yeah with the wife of the israeli prime minister is charged with misusing more than one hundred thousand dollars in public funds the battle rages for libya's keep oil ports with both sides claiming to be in control and we look at how migrant children may prove to be the future of australia's socceroos. it was a rare reversal for a president who prides himself on being tough but after days of public outrage on political pressure trump signed an executive order to end his controversial policy of splitting up migrant families at the southern border but the order provides little clarity only more confusion for the families actually involved they want to know when they will be reunited and what will happen when the twenty day detention

limit expires gabrielle is on the went looking for answers in brownsville texas near the border with mexico. after washington announced an end to family separation of asylum seekers at the border there was no celebrating in brownsville texas state of confusion. the law states families seeking asylum that are arrested in the u.s. can only be kept together in detention for twenty days trump's legal team says they'll go to court try to extend that and the so-called zero tolerance policy it remains in place so there is no change in policy on arresting asylum seekers and charging them with the crime the thing that concerns us the most is that ultimately what this will result in as far as we can tell is indefinite detainment of families sounds like you don't think this is the solution absolutely not a lot of confusion still in the days ahead yet there's a lot of opacity still around this and ultimately until we see an end to zero
12:51 am
tolerance we don't think that this is. we don't think that you can address these issues without ending zero tolerance with not enough shelters or detention facilities to how's everyone tent city detention centers for children like this one in a remote desert area near el paso texas will remain for now conditions are difficult temperatures can reach forty two degrees celcius and in brownsville outside this shelter detention center housing hundreds of kids no sign of being reunited with their parents. this shelter behind me is one that already has children in it that have been separated from their families the big question now is how to get them reunited problem is there does not seem to be any system in place to make that happen so it could be days weeks or even months until families are finally reunited activists here remain baffled by what's going on saying that hellish
12:52 am
situation is just giving way to another. creates a crime in my minds a crime quite simply is the separation of a innocent baby from the mother. and it's completely out of proportion to what's going on in washington relief perhaps after trump's move to curtail the growing storm clouds his separation policies brought over his presidency but here just another night of kids going to bed without knowing what's happened to their parents gabriel's on to brownsville texas let's bring in our white house correspondent kimberly how kid kimberly when donald trump signed executive order yesterday remember him saying you know people are going to be very happy about it doesn't really look like that because confusion is reigning do we have any more clarity as to what is going to happen to migrant families both the ones coming now that could be separated and of course the ones that already have been. well certainly there is seems to be
12:53 am
a plan moving forward for the families that show up now that the executive order has been signed and that is that the family stay together that was the focus of the executive order well they await a hearing with an immigration judge but you're right those twenty three hundred approximately that were the subject of the piece you just heard there from my colleague gabriel is on joe there doesn't seem to be a plan that they seem to be in legal limbo some of been sent to health and human services detention centers very far away from their entry point into the united states and that's the big question so there has been a letter sent to the administration donald trump specifically from the top democrat in the house of representatives nancy pelosi top democrat in the senate chuck schumer saying look we need to know how these chiller going to be reunited you need to present a plan to congress and there also needs to be clarity on how the taxpayers are going to be paying for this given the fact that there was no plan put in place so all of this is happening in the backdrop of the. department of health and human
12:54 am
services homeland security secretary kirsten nielsen in fact speaking saying look at the issue of child separations maybe temporarily resolved but the issue of children being sent across the border often without their parents has been going on for years some ten thousand in the last two years and so the government is pointing towards congress saying look you need to do your job you need to come up with a comprehensive plan and that's where the spotlight is now and i guess that's the real stumbling block because of course they've been trying to pass some kind of legislation over four years there is an upcoming political battle at the immigration debate and vote tonight any sign that the two sides are coming going to meet halfway or come to some kind of resolution. doesn't seem to be any optimism on any side that either of these immigration bills that are going to be looked at the house of representatives fiercely debated is going to get the kind of traction needed to become law because even if one does pass the house of representatives
12:55 am
it's unlikely to pass in the senate because it contains very contentious funding requests for donald trump's border wall which democrats have said that they won't pass so as a result it doesn't appear that there is any resolution on the horizon for this issue barbara and heartbreaking of course for a lot of the families that are still separated kimberly how could a white house correspondent kimberly thanks for that well money on a sanchez now joins us live from outside a military air force base in guatemala city where some migrants who have been deported from the u.s. are brought back into the country so in a sense the other side of the story first of all mary and us what can you tell us about what's happening where you are right now. well barbara we are their force base where the remains will be landing this morning here with migrants from the united states and what you see behind me are family members of people.
12:56 am
unfortunately we're having problems getting our line to. as we will try to speak to her again a little later as she was in guatemala city airport actually let's try to go back to her now and see if the line is up and working again mary emma can you hear me. yes barbara i can you well i was saying that there's a lot of people that are waiting here. right this morning it is three planes that will be coming landing here from the united states to actually stop this air force base in the city or what they're not allowed many people to come here of course who are penny left and the ones who are shuffling members that will be waiting for them my views if you will are the lucky ones been able to write here without a penny and so the governments of guatemala i wield basically take them to a bunch of painkillers and that's from then on they have to secure it out to see how they get back to their homes or their families and then you see folks that of

course come here traumatized not only as this long and very arduous and dangerous trip to the united states where they hopped in duels of many dangerous what they have spent the whole the money that's been kept usually five six ten thousand dollars to get there with their families and. and so many people arrive here traumatized barbara and mariana just briefly if you can how would you describe it i suppose you sort of have in a sense the mood oh guatemalans their response responding to the migrant crisis what have people been telling you about how they feel. about her are furious. ministration because they think they don't understand that people children living from guatemala i don't mean for poverty to be filthy flee violence in their school conduct community violence they cannot control and the government does not protect

them but also they're furious at the government for having a very controversial response with the foreign minister saying that the children in the united states were in good hands the spokesperson from the president. and it was from policies and so they are people are very angry in the government house retracted a bit on this petition but it's kind of late because people are now gathering through the social media to protest against the government on friday. with reaction there in guatemala city were a lot of migrants are returning from the united states mariana for the moment thank you. and saying with the story time magazine has that it case had its cover page to donald trump's zero tolerance immigration policy the title of the latest issue reads welcome to america it features the president looking down at what's become a viral image of a two year old one door and girl crying as

a mother is detained at the us mexico border will be one of the front page of the cover of time she's got it now. the wife of israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu has been charged with fraud the justice ministry says sarah netanyahu is accused of misusing state funds by allegedly spending government money on catering services herefore said has more now from western. it's been coming for months and now it's confirmed sarah netanyahu indicted for fraud the case against misuse of state funds connected to her husband's position as israel's prime minister investigation started three years ago when a government official issued a report on excessive spending at the couple's official residence in west jerusalem she's charged with using nearly one hundred thousand dollars from the official prime minister's residence budget for private ships and food for family events

allegedly conspiring with an official to hide the fact that a resident chef was already being employed and falsifying fifteen invoices for the services of outside caterers all very different from the prime minister's initial rebuttal of the allegations when he spoke of take away dinners in full trays the fact that she's indicted this is a sign that. the system and the police and the people people of israel are not willing to accept such a criminal behavior and this is a bad sign for netanyahu because they will stop with the wife and will finish with him israeli prime minister understands all too well the position his wife has been in in february israeli police recommended that he be indicted of a two corruption cases we're going to slowly i will continue to lead israel responsibly and by the way as long as the citizens of israel choose me to lead you i am certain i am certain that the truth will be revealed and i'm certain that at the next elections which will be held on schedule i will earn your trust again the
