2:00 pm
probably see a big protest behind me helsinki this is fairly large there were protests on sunday involving ghosts perhaps three thousand people right now these protests have marched from a park elsewhere in the capital they're calling it helsinki against trump and putin of course there are issues that they differ with. donald trump over including immigration policy things like climate change but some of the protesters who are actually u.s. citizens have said that they've also come to to oppose what they see as their president acting in the interests of russia there's a tweet a twitter hashtag going round that is treason summit some people accusing donald donald trump of actually being too close to president putin and not prepared to push him on issues like meddling in a foreign elections of course he has promised to do that we'll wait to see what comes out of the one to one meeting as james was saying there is no official agenda
2:01 pm
later on on monday we're expecting a women's rights protest as well there is that these are all issues that have been picked up by protesters in the u.k. as well when donald trump was there he has indicated that he's aware of these protests in fact he waved to protesters at that golf course in scotland of course but there's no suggestion that it's putting him off for what he's come here for which is to spend time with blood amid putin and he says to try to push america's business interests but he's also called the european union a photo we're in the e.u. finland is a member of the you many people here worried by that sort of language the head of the european council don't tweet on sunday learnt that anyone that says. that the e.u. and america of photos is spreading fake news well that's a dig obviously at the u.s. president and banners around the city here also saying welcome mr president to the law. and of the free press people here are very concerned about his or targeting as
2:02 pm
they see it of journalists as well so plenty of issues that are making people angry indeed of course the deem you paint that the much bigger picture of what the general feeling is. thinking in the people that are there demonstrated when you've been speaking to the one to one basis one of those main concerns is that about fake news this is about the instability and relationship that the u.s. has with europe you talked just a moment ago about the e.u. being a foe in fact foreign policy chief frederica more green has only just tweeted on monday that perhaps the question that president trump should be asked is who are your friends who do finland think are their friends do they think trump is a friend. well certainly these protesters do not speak. there have been small pro trump demonstrations on sunday there were a few trump supporters who gathered here in cells helsinki and were suspecting
2:03 pm
perhaps a small far right gathering so well to say that he's welcome here on monday but in general no people are skeptical it's not just about their own national interest we've seen banners saying don't threaten the future of our children references to climate change something that's going to become a bigger problem in in the years to come things like immigration and the fact that the borders and walls are being put up all over the place we've been we've we've heard from campaigners who are worried about not just u.s. foreign policy and policy on immigration but e.u. policy towards refugees and migrants as well a whole range of things which are making people worried but then again they're also attacking vladimir putin for being anti democratic and just in the last few hours donald who i was mentioning has tweeted that europe and china and there's a big meeting between the e.u. and china of course on monday america and russia
2:04 pm
a jointly responsible for improving the world order not destroying it i hope this message reaches helsinki so lots of people really concerned about what's going to happen in that meeting between donald trump and vladimir putin because of the nature of the meeting that it's just the two of them that we don't really know and the kremlin has been saying on monday don't worry there will be no deals made behind anyone's back but it is exactly that concern that is driving some people indeed will see what does come out of that meeting with the press conference because later today for the moment a team thank you elicits more analysis on this from brett brew and he's the president of the consultancy firm global situation room consultancy he's also the former director of global engagement turned the white house under president obama joins me now on skype from. tenerife in spain good to have you with us algis their lives i mean when leaders of countries have a summit we do expect something to come from it something tangible be it even
2:05 pm
a nondescript agenda as we're experiencing what can we expect from this meeting. traditionally there's a sequencing to summits you want to bake ahead of time that deliverables that you are looking for out of that summit that will guide what happens in relations in the following weeks and months none of that has taken place and i think just like with singapore we're going to see very little come out of this apart from a big p.r. victory for of lattimer putin is some it too strong a word than to use in this particular instance because the old one does what's the point of having one shouldn't it just be saying well the president's a meeting for a cup of tea and a slice of cake the problem is they've been trying to walk this back the idea that it isn't really a summit and yet it has all of the. propaganda value of a summit the press and the prestigious platform all of these her what lattimer
2:06 pm
putin has sought after the last several years to get back his respectability to get back his credibility and unfortunately donald trump has given it to him on a silver platter and of course if that's the case then donald trump has also said that relations are strained with russia we seem to be getting sort of mixed metaphors and different messages. because donald trump always wants to look like he's fixing a crisis whether it's one of his own creation or one that others have created that he can walk in and weave great dramatic flair and show that he is the savior of the protagonist that is bringing a solution even if it is only a superficial one in terms of the issues in your opinion that perhaps all should be top of the agenda what should be discussed right at the top should it be the alleged election interfering of twenty sixteen or whether it happened or not should it be crimea the annexation of parts of ukraine in your opinion what should
2:07 pm
it be. i think it has to start with the u.s. election meddling one there is an urgent see to this we are heading into legislative elections in just a matter of months russia continues to meddle in that process and trump needs to deliver a very clear message to putin that there will be serious consequences if he doesn't see thousand dissidents after that i think you want to address what's happening in syria and quite frankly to get some solutions and resolution to the situation before the charlotte side is given a blank check finally certainly on crimea we need to reiterate what has been standing u.s. and european policy that russia needs to get out of crimea internets but we will see what does transpire in the coming hours for the moment in the thanks very much for joining us in tel aviv so let's go straight back to our diplomatic editor james
2:08 pm
bays who joins me now live in james he would have just heard from that about you the top of the agenda he feels has to be the issue of russian meddling in the twenty sixteen election the all knowing rumbling that's continuing the indictment of twelve russians it is a subject that is not going away a we are heading to midterm elections in november with president trump needs to come out of this meeting with some sort of conclusion does he not. well certainly that will be the line that will come from those who worked like mr bruin for the previous administration and from democrats but also from some republicans and certainly at home given what has happened in recent days with that indictment it is the key number one issue but there are clearly other issues particularly in the middle east and particularly with regard to the war in syria which has been going on now more than seven years
2:09 pm
and the fact that it might be coming to its final days that are important president trump with regard to syria and the wider region i think will be pushing president putin on the subject of iran and iran's regional involvement particularly after he pulled out of the iran deal so i think there will be other issues. than just the election meddling which will be important to both sides and of course the issue of ukraine is an important one we are now seeing live pictures i think of you if you can see the live pictures of the two men i'm told the two presidents coming together and this will be the handshake ahead i think of the one on one meeting of the two you don't have the pictures yet hopefully you'll see them soon because i am getting them here in helsinki and i can describe what i'm seeing you'll probably see it in a few moments the two men sitting not particularly smiling and nodding at each other in two armchairs and chatting
2:10 pm
a bit briefly but certainly not smiling at this stage and some some comments it seems from the two man that we're seeing on the pictures i'm seeing here which we hope will be able to get to you very shortly on television and president putin certainly saying a few words ahead of this meeting president trump listening to him as they speak inside the presidential palace ahead of what is the most important moment of the day and that is the face to face meeting alone we think for up to ninety minutes you're now getting the pictures let's listen. events. and of course it's that time pic talk about essentially about all bilateral dice and about some painful is use in the world point and they quote
2:11 pm
a lot of them so that we can pay attention to them. really great world cup one of the best ever the one everybody goes to one of the best ever and also even itself doing so well. thank you why quite a bit in the united states we call it soccer and i like quite a bit of it and i watched the entire family in the semifinals and did they were released exactly again that is for you to be going to congratulations i. think
2:12 pm
you. folks think you're. going to get. most importantly we have a lot of good things to go things to talk about. scarcity and so on every day of the trade to the literary to missiles to nuclear to china. where we talk a little bit about china. and mutual friend president xi. if you're an internet thank you thank you thank you. thank you i think we have a great opportunities together as two countries that frankly we have not been getting along very well for the last number of years i've been here not too long but it's getting close to two years but i think we learned that having
2:13 pm
extraordinary like you i've been saying and i'm sure you've heard over the years and as i campaigned that getting along with russia is a good thing not if. i ask you. about that we're not like you. you think it's going to get a little because. we. think. it's a yes q i'm going to like you i feel and i really think the world wants to see us get along we are of the two great nuclear power ninety percent of the nuclear. got a good thing it's a bad thing and i think we hopefully can do something about that because it's not a positive force it's a negative force so we'll be talking about that among other things when you get unstuck you. are going to get what is going to. get you think
2:14 pm
you need to going to look i'm going. to go. i now well i think it was going to going to get a feeling. and with that the world awaits and i look forward to our personal discussion which i think you can sit down and then we're going to meet our old team . you have quite a few representatives of you and you all have a lot of questions and hopefully we'll come up with answers most of the way to you with f.e.m.a. going. i. want to. thank you very much i'm going to let you i thank you everybody.
2:15 pm
i thank you i. your child is their president of the u.s. meeting vladimir putin president of russia for the very first time that i go to the private closed door meeting that's bringing all diplomatic at the james base who is this new again. we expected a few words from both men and they certainly did speak let's just focus in on certainly the latter part of that comment from president trump one of the topics he suggests they will discuss more about is the nuclear arsenal two world powers they need to do something about it he says. yeah he says it's a serious issue here is a serious issue and you have a treaty called new start which is the current basis of their nuclear diplomacy that is supposed to expire in two thousand and twelve and president trump has not been sure that he wants to renew a treaty which he says is a bad treaty that was one of the things he said they'd be discussing remember
2:16 pm
they've said it will be a loose meeting no formal agenda but i thought it was interesting that president trump did mention some of what he said would be the issues he said trade military nuclear and china now there are other issues that at home people want him to press president putin on and those are all very important global issues but he didn't mention election meddling in the u.s. he did mention cyber crime during the twenty sixteen election and the indictment of those twelve russians in the last few days by the special counsel he didn't mention the russian meddling in eastern ukraine and the amec sation of chris ukraine in twenty fourteen which all is it ministrations say is something that needs to be reversed all in the administration all the key figures apart from one president trump who seems very very reluctant to pronounce those words which are supposed to be part of his nation's national security strategy and he didn't mention the middle
2:17 pm
east and in particular syria so president trumps idea of what the key issues are perhaps doesn't match many other commentators at home including members of his own party who want him to be very very tough with vladimir putin and of course one of the other statements that have come out was the fact that the president say getting along with russia is a good thing not a bad thing and that's also one of the many alarm bells will be ringing across the political spectrum about this relationship he wants to develop seemingly with the russian president and how that's going to go down not just in the u.s. but with america's allies namely the e.u. which he seems to be distancing himself from day day by. well he's very critical of the obama administration and what they did with regard to russia and it seems that he wants to reset the relationship i'm using. deliberately
2:18 pm
that's exactly how the obama administration started let's reset that was their words the relationship with russia and for a time there was a slightly better relationship and then it got worse again and there are those that say the president really isn't learning the lessons from the past with regard to this worth noting we didn't hear all the translation of president putin's comments but he said we're going to be talking about some of the painful issues of the world telling us how difficult this conversation was going to be and then followed by very positive language from president trump congratulating president putin on the way that he'd. handled the world cup and joking about how americans call it soccer the tone between the two didn't seem to match no we'll see what the tone transpires like later on certainly the day for the moment james thank you let's
2:19 pm
join brew and he is the president of the consultancy firm global situation room consultancy also former director of global engagement at the white house under president obama we spoke a short while ago live from ten a reef with you could have you back with us and thank you for staying on you've managed to hear the initial statement certainly both from the russian and the american president and certainly president trump giving us an indication of what he would like to discuss certainly in the public domain yet there are many subjects there that he didn't mention that perhaps will be talked about behind closed doors . yes and what i heard was president trump desperately looking for a deal as he did it in singapore he needs a deal more than putin does just by virtue of having this meeting putin has gotten a large part of what he wants which is that credibility that respectability he doesn't need the deal as much as its trump does and that i fear what we will see
2:20 pm
coming out of this is a very bad deal for europe for the u.s. and other allies who does president putin impress that by getting this one on one meeting who is he trying to impress because as far as president trump is concerned his allies his political adversaries and supporters obviously watching. the minutes pass by and wondering what the president's going to get out of this and how it will affect the couldn't is looking to create distance in the western alliance and i think just this morning we saw a victor or brian in hungary talking about the time coming for. releasing russia from sanctions that's exactly the kind of leader that putin is hoping will take his cue from what president trump is saying of course when you actually. see the president try in this particular scenario with president putin as our
2:21 pm
political editor suggested the body language is very different the tone from the two men is very different do things change behind closed doors you worked with the president see where you might say president obama said one thing publicly but there were different types of conversation surely that happened behind closed doors. there is and i have colleagues who continue to work on the national security council who talk about these meetings with president trump and the reality is they're not much different in private from what you see in public they tend to be very superficial he tends not to dive into the details and doesn't in a strategic way deplore why he is is anger his aggressiveness will lash out but very much in terms of what personally affects him rather than what's in the interests of the united states is is this a stage being set perhaps full the secretary of state might pompei it to take over
2:22 pm
and work with his russian counterpart sergey lavrov i'm speculating here but one wonders where you go from a meeting between the two presidents and beyond. this is the problem so just like with singapore pompei oh follows up with a trip to pyongyang trying to extract more concessions more detail to put on the bones of what was a pretty white statement out of singapore and has a very tough time getting any of that i think similarly pompei oh we will have great difficulty because the moment to get those concessions is now russia's coming off of the first stage as the president mentioned the world cup they don't want that tarnish this is when you need to tighten the screws on food for the moment to but we'll leave it there and of course that's analysis with you throughout the day
2:23 pm
thanks so much for your time and joining us from time to race let's cross over to our correspondent who is in health think certainly it's a different venue a different atmosphere protest is obviously not very happy with either president it seems arriving all the finnish soil. absolutely so i mean these protesters have marched through helsinki it's been a carnival atmosphere there's been lots of music and. levity if you like but there are serious issues that protesters are angry about both with president trump and president putin many of the banners and slogans you hear denounce u.s. immigration policy as well as the trumpet administration's attitude towards the paris climate change agreement but then similarly they've denounced president putin as well for trying to to destabilize the region and they've said
2:24 pm
a lot of the protesters have actually drawn parallels between the two presidents in terms of what they see as their anti democratic policies things like cracking down on a free media there are posters up around the capital here put up by one of the major newspapers saying mr president welcome to the land of the free press obviously those for mr trump they were in english but some were also in russian blood amir putin accusing him of cracking down on the free press as well and so there's a lot of hostility here to both presidents but at the same time as the two when. drove towards the presidential palace tens of thousands of people did welcome them and there were cheers particularly for president trump so there are people here on both sides if you like well for the moment we'll leave it there and a demon come back to you through the day thank you.
2:25 pm
it. is. the thing. my name is just six. hours born enough from a new eleven sloughed i did it. because the woman in my money but it was still everybody has one. so that's how i came to bear.
2:26 pm
the. simplest matter we had to go bust city center at least to get ahead beginning for food and not just walking. in the lead in a two meter that depletes where she lived. below the. last. bit up plastic bags that would be touching to me is just sad. sometimes they succeed and my friend is not having something so i want to show them in each to. me and. go. in it for poor little bit rich people. and. you. did it begin did.
2:27 pm
you manage to get them to. leave. well french team leaving after i woke up with on sunday the team is now heading back to paris where fans have been celebrating since the victory and celebrating along with i'm sure was our correspondent in the time hopefully you haven't got a sore head but i certainly was not up till of the early hours of the morning but i can tell you a lot of people around me i wasn't very tired looking faces this morning very happy looking faces because of course from it's all the world champions and we were in a fan zone when the final whistle went to the end of that cup final match between
2:28 pm
france and croatia and the crowd absolutely ruptured enjoy that party started then and it really hasn't started and is going to continue really hasn't stopped i should say and it will continue today because here on the shells of these a people are starting to come you might see them gathering behind me because the bus carrying the french team is going to come back it's going to go down front says most of the famous avenues are since most famous street and then head to the police a palace where the team will meet. the french president they will be carrying the cup this is going to be a huge welcome home and the celebrations will of course continue of course it's really invigorated french football also society as a whole they never really had very much hope that the team would do so well. no that's right at the beginning of this tournament so the french team perhaps would performing as well as they could have but then it all changed somewhere in
2:29 pm
the middle with those marches against argentina and uruguay and now look of course they all the world champions and there's a wonderful spirit in the air i have to say you know lots of people have been talking about how victory like this can unite a nation well i think a lot of people all united behind this team they are young they come from diverse backgrounds many of them come from some of the paris suburbs say that places where you know there isn't much opportunity so that really you know being seen as role models as young people have been working hard and i think they've really touched the hearts of this nation the day they have it will join you later in the day. well the world cup in russia is not over but all eyes are on the next host that's where we're broadcasting from and we prepare for that told event in twenty twenty two the gulf country will host the world cup in the middle east and for the very first time john of course roscoe went behind the scenes to take a look at how preparations are going. it may not look that impressive but this piece of concrete is the spots where the cats are twenty twenty two world cup will
2:30 pm
kick off it can also be seen as symbolic of this country's solid determination to make this tournament a success as it enters the second year blockade imposed on it by its gulf neighbors initially that prevented some construction material from getting into cattle but organizers now say that all eight stadiums are on schedule with all of them ready to years before the world cup kicks off frankly speaking it hasn't affected construction on the site there were materials originally sourced from people came in countries however those are not the only sources of material in the world there are plenty of other alternatives and we quickly diverted our sourcing to other places the world and other shipping routes things are back on track instantly so the factory. let's say will stadium maybe here will host the opening game and the final and when it's finished in around two years' time it will seat around eighty thousand spectators now with the tournament being moved to december it also means
2:31 pm
those fans will avoid the kind of summer heat that we're experiencing today as part of its winning bid cats are promised to take apart many of the stadiums so at the end of the world cup and send sections to developing countries to help them grow the game of course that's only part of the legacy cattles leaders and world cup organizes a still hoping football can bring this region closer together football always has a has a way of bringing people together sport in general does. look when it comes to the to the point of view of the state of qatar we haven't stopped anybody from entering qatar we are the ones that have taken the decision to cut ties or to blockade anybody. all fans are welcome fans from the blockading countries are welcome i really hope above everything else that people will walk away with a true sense of what our hospitality is middle east of us dollars he is unique and goes above and beyond and in all regards and i really hope that people will feel
2:32 pm
like i'm fairly confident that they will so well the next global festival of football will make history in me twelve it also comes with its own unique set of political goals. so let's just remind you of our top story the u.s. president of the russian leader vladimir putin have just addressed the media ahead of the full meeting in finland president putin and trump said it's time to properly discuss relations between the two countries that are conduct a closed door meeting taking place at the presidential palace on the other side of the city there are protests that these leaders are in finland we are following events throughout the day here on al-jazeera do stay with us.
2:33 pm
what should the world expects from the trump put in summit in helsinki accusations of election tampering the war in syria ukraine and arms control issues at stake between the u.s. and russia so will the two leaders reach a common ground this is inside story. and welcome to the program. u.s. president donald trump and russian leader vladimir putin expected to hold their first one on one meeting in house on monday but the two leaders will hold some of those meetings without a vat's worrying diplomats trump has been under pressure to console the summit on.
