5:00 pm
every. the world wants to see you as we are the two great nuclear power. the mere putin speaking of building a new relationship is fall into one on one in finland. hundreds of activists are out on the streets in the finnish capital protesting against both trump and putin. logs the whole robin you're watching al-jazeera live from our headquarters here in doha also coming up they've been waiting twenty years for a party like their son finally friend celebrates late into the night after winning the thrilling world cup victory also they were better foes just
5:01 pm
a few months ago but now they're the best of friends eritrea reopens december c. in ethiopia. welcome to the program donald trump and vladimir putin have avoided mentioning some of the most contentious issues between their countries as the u.s. and russian president spoke of building a new relationship they made a few opening remarks before they went into that one on one meeting in finland the presidential palace in helsinki trump said they discussed the nuclear arms and china putin said he wanted to talk about hotspots but there was no mention of allegations of russian interests here and it's in the twenty sixteen u.s. election that's talked to our diplomatic editor james bays in helsinki i suppose really both men need to measure each other up and tread carefully. well that's certainly it seems how president trump felt about it because certainly
5:02 pm
president putin laid out things like the war in syria and said that they had had some painful differences the u.s. president much more upbeat and seemed to avoid the areas that are the real sticking points between the u.s. and russia issues like ukraine the anniversary of m.h. seventeen those two hundred ninety eight people who died is four years ago on choose day suggest coming up in a matter of hours avoiding russia's role in syria and avoiding that whole issue election meddling even though there was indictment of twelve russian agents just a few days ago and he's getting some criticism for this not raising them before he went into the one on one meeting in the gothic call in side the presidential palace just interpreters on each side advantage of president putin because we know he speaks a little bit of english whereas president trump will be relying on that interpreter
5:03 pm
because we don't believe he speaks any russian that meeting went on what we're told longer than expected we were told originally by both the white house and the russian side that they expect it to be an hour and a half where it went on for more than two hours two hours and ten minutes and then the next stage has now started which is the lunch it's now the two leaders plus their key colleagues so it's five aside on each side at this lunch president trump joined by secretary state might pump aoe and others and president putin joined by foreign minister sergei lavrov reporters were allowed in at the very start of that lunch and they managed to get one question to president trump asking him how the one on one went. to. really good everybody. while at a luncheon. i think is coming to an end pretty soon so we don't think it will be as
5:04 pm
long as that one on one meeting that took place between the two presidents let me tell you what is next on the agenda because it's when we hopefully will find out what has happened behind closed doors and that's a relatively short news conference with statements from both presidents we think some questions what we were told earlier on is two questions from the russian side two questions from the u.s. side the timings of all not kept to the original schedule so i can't tell you or timing but we could possibly see that this half hour that press conference where we'll find out a little bit more about what the two have talked about in this meeting that had no formal agenda but of course we'll be covering that press conference when it does happen james and one of the issues certainly one of the points we've been very focused on is president trump's you might say loose lips he does speak off the cuff off the record off script but he's always looking backwards to make
5:05 pm
a deal and mentioning the nuclear arsenal earlier in the day perhaps makes you think that he wants to try and achieve something out of this meeting but is a deal too soon and is a nuclear deal too soon in the planning. wanted to pen's if he's just going to renew the existing nuclear treaty that's there which is called new start it's coming to the end of the timeframe of that treaty expires in two thousand and twelve now i think the obama administration had thought that that was something that should be renewed and president putin i think is keen to renew that treaty president trump in the past has said it was one of the deals that the u.s. has done that was not a good deal i think it's certain that there's no way in the time he's had he could have renegotiated that treaty so they'll either be the two saying they are looking to renegotiate something or perhaps president trump has agreed to stick with the
5:06 pm
existing treaty we'll see that among many other issues issues that so far have not pointedly been discussed by the two presidents see how they're raised in the news conference by reporters from the russian and u.s. side and of course we'll come back to you for analysis when that does happen for the moment james thank you well hundreds of activists are out on the streets in the finnish capital protesting against both trump and putin their anger stems from many of trump's policies from immigration to press freedom to climate change and the russian president is under fire for alleged human rights abuses and all thora tarion it's and let's cross over to nadine barber one of the protests in the finnish capital what's the mood like there at the moment. well it's it's fairly light hearted it's fairly all of the protests that we've seen in the last few hours have been very good natured just to explain behind me
5:07 pm
a crowd waiting to to see the motorcade of the two presidents departing earlier on tens of thousands of people lined the streets of helsinki to see donald trump arriving there were cheers for him so there are people who do see this visit by the american president in a favorable light but on sunday and throughout monday there have been a number of protests against his presence and against brother mir putin to see many of the protesters highlighting similar human rights infringements as they see it by both presidents things like a women's rights and access to health care and abortion on the american side highlighting donald trump's immigration policies in his he's attitude towards climate change and the free press as well many of the protesters saying that both presidents have been camping down in their own different ways on freedom
5:08 pm
of speech certainly there have been posters around this city. reminding people what donald trump has said calling some media enemies of the people so they've been putting their message across very vocally those are messages which we've heard throughout donald trump's european trip the same in england and scotland as well wolf that we'll leave it there and follow events with you through the day also indeed my apologies obviously the the the tension that we've seen in other european capitals hasn't really been the same as it is as it has been in finland one wonders whether the finnish people themselves all the finns really have the same. feelings about the issues that the british or the span. the americans and selves have to the policies that each of these presidents seems to exude across europe.
5:09 pm
well finland is has traditionally been seen as a neutral country it's hosted many u.s. soviet and u.s. russian high level meetings before but of course it's a member of the european union before this summit donald trump gave an interview to an american network saying that the e.u. is one of the us his major photos now his defenders pointing out he was talking mainly about trade seeing things in terms of cum competition but it's really got hackles up in many european capitals donald toast the head of the european council saying anyone claiming that europe was a foe of america was spreading fake news and now this extraordinary statement we're just getting news all from the new german foreign minister hi chromos he said we can no longer completely rely on the white house europe must not let itself be divided however sharp the verbal attacks and observes the tweets may be really
5:10 pm
really strong words i think unprecedented from a european union foreign minister or somebody at such a high level really saying our traditional ally the u.s. cannot be relied upon there have been of course lots of worries about whether american support for nato will continue donald trump says everything's going fine at the moment the kremlin has said that we shouldn't worry about what happened in that one to one meeting but a lot of people around europe will be wondering what kind of concessions he may have made towards president putin but we'll see what happens certainly in late lots of parts of the day for the moment that in thank you. well the french football team is in the air preparing to land to a hero's welcome in paris within the hour for the fourth well cup victory over
5:11 pm
croatia fans have lined up in moscow also to see their boss at the airport big celebrations are planned in the french capital where six subway stations have been renamed in their honor just for the day the tasha butler joins me now from the french capital and if anything if last night's anything to go by the tasha i can only assume monday is going to be more of the same. as if you can have a behind the scene or you know that finds it behind her she also has a. nice cross and i think someone i was i ripped up and excited because of course the eighteen year olds were heading back from most on a plane who was a little bit of a delays today my place being longer but they will be coming down the sidewalk i have been told possibly prayed a hero's welcome i mean spies it probably to thank his team that of brought home to tracy defaulters a lot of excitement here i spoke to some fans
5:12 pm
a little bit earlier some who had come from other cities in france i spoke to a couple of the twenty year olds who when stressed cornice to france they partied all night they went straight to the station in the morning and took their train tickets just to be here in paris to say cut the amnesty i was exposed to father and son. he was a guy. was hopefully you can hear me at the tasha of course so we will try and get back to you later in the day when the team actually arrive. well croatia's for. team have arrived back in zagreb out to the country's first i thought well cup final there were celebrations going on at the airport a few short time ago these that those recent pictures of the team are certainly making their way into the main square where they're being welcomed to will be welcomed by the prime minister and the province and self has asked employers to
5:13 pm
release stuff early so they can attend and train tickets to zagreb a half price full day sunday was the first time that the country a full million people have ever reached the world cup finals foresee walker is in zagreb before so i think we have to say robyn first just paint the picture where you are and what's going on right now. well we've had we've had all kinds happening here when we had all the thousands of packed into the square now we had a military fly. fighter jets high school see the croatian see back here to the airport from moscow we had a helicopter fly go ahead with croatian flags they believe they are going to step aside now to give you a sense of the carnival atmosphere here on. making square in zagreb where it's saluki. with people most people even then came out yesterday to watch the game. we got black card saying you know. whatever the result it didn't
5:14 pm
matter there you go i think whatever well twenty eight hundred forever and that's how the croatian see it that they came second but they are absolutely heroes that somebody else is going to so i never doubted if you can see it is it's a bitch marry me i just i'm just going to weld myself by the reception by the by the way in which the croatians have reacted to that today it seemed they just overwhelmed by the by how far they came how well they played yesterday what it could have what a fantastic bunch of players that they have. despite of course being such a such a small country you know they literally have had the red carpet rolled out for them and they are now driving through the city on an open top bus in detroit we can actually see we can actually share with all viewers that open top bus and the routes that it's making from the airport to wards the square in the main
5:15 pm
capital of course one has to you can perhaps give us an idea of the sort of the national pride in the journey that this very young team has made to get to a world cup final for the very first time what it actually means to this country. it means so much because i'm trying to sort of ask myself just imagine how things could have been if that's a good i don't in the five know and they have lost against the french i i don't think there would be the same. reception for the team that you. believe that i think boils down to the fact that croatia has been through so much since its independence from yugoslavia with the war in the ninety ninety s. that left a scar on the station and in fact two of the peace talk play is completely become
5:16 pm
outreaching self. from that from that crisis and think how far they've come you know the baltics is grandfather was was murdered by paramilitaries jury. and went to the house in a hotel with his family. i guess his credibility is recognized that he was selfish royalty that he let scandal involving corruption and get his play golf and played credibly well at the croatian simply given that the cuban regime. football despite the state's controversial situation with regards to corruption it doesn't matter they are absolute heroes and they see the result at least so that they will be rapturous when the team abroad to use where it's going to be the nominee sees here i'm sure it will of course will fall over with you are not welcome that the creation team gets when they arrive from force we walk about
5:17 pm
in soccer. well still ahead here on al-jazeera a test of media freedom in myanmar as two journalists who reported on the brink of crisis go on trial. may change one thousand new faces enter parliament after a shock election victory earlier this year. hello there some parts of china have seen an awful lot of wet weather in the last few days and this is one province we've had flooding and this is one of the rescues that took place you can see just how deep the water is there that was out of this area of town taken stevie is still with us at the moment but i think over the next few days the wetter weather is going to be in the south and that's where we're going to have more problems already in the so the positron and the northern parts of it now there's lots of cloud at the moment this probably won't develop into
5:18 pm
a tropical cyclone just because it's too near land there's also very strong winds high up in the atmosphere and that will stop it forming but we are now seeing this area of cloud develop some kind of rotation and that's going to track its way towards the west and as it does say it will probably intensify an edge its way towards the southern parts of china and northern parts of it now and so over the next three or four days it's going to be incredibly wet here and we are likely to hear reports of flooding there here's what we're expecting to happen on tuesday that already the rain has set in over the northern parts of southern china and then the here is the next system this is the cycle and it's working its way towards the west and will bring us yet more very heavy rain over towards the west and the rains over india have been pretty active recently particularly in the northwest and then we more heavy showers here still to come. he has no passport yet he's politically active in two countries i was the only one
