justice department indicted twelve russian intelligence agents on charges of meddling in the twenty sixteen presidential campaign the two leaders had more than a two hour one on one meeting talking about everything we're told from trade to military to missiles and china president trump first congratulated put in for the successful organization of the world cup and said he hopes for a fresh start with russia i think we have a great opportunity for together to to thank you thank you we have not been getting along very well with the if you like that here not too long that it's getting close to two years but i think you think you're going to get been saying and i'm sure you've heard over the years and there's a campaign that getting along with russia is a good thing that i think but the russian president didn't give away much on what to expect from his meeting with donald trump take a listen closely in the context continue over recent months we've spoken on the

phone and seen each other at various international event but of course it's time to discuss pearlie our bilateral relations and various hotspots in the world there's quite a few of them so we need to focus on them. and we are awaiting for a news conference between the two leaders very shortly it is about to happen in fact as the two leaders are walking to the podium there after their first one on one meeting since donald trump took office they have met on the sidelines of the g. twenty gathering in hamburg germany before but again this was their first one on one private encounter we understand that they met for over two hours and then their respective teams got together for lunch and they held more talks we are all of course waiting to hear what they talked about and what they agreed on possibly but nothing has filtered yet i want to let you know and we are of course waiting for this news conference in her sink in we'll bring it to you live as it happens here
6:04 pm
on al-jazeera i want to bring in our senior political analyst marwan bashar who is live in london watching this we've been talking to you all day marwan we've heard that north formal agenda was set for this meeting between trump and putin no major agreements expected to be signed no deal is expected so what was a point of all this. well clearly when the meeting was first announced it was only two weeks ago there's absolutely no time within two weeks to produce anything though of interest no time for working groups to meet and no time to set up an agenda certainly not time to agree on the principles of something like a nuclear proliferation treaty i think the point there are two issues here one issue is that i think president trump in particular wanted to meet president putin and see as they say in america they wanted to size him up they wanted to look into
6:05 pm
his eyes if you trust him doesn't trust emotional support that's of course if you trust the trump camp if you don't you would say that he's meeting with him for two hours because there is complicity between the american on the russian presidents and they don't want to get into these official documents what they need to know it all to do is to strategize between two best friends now there's also that one possibility that the two meet at this point in time as an introductory meeting in order to agree on the. macro guidelines if you will of what is and is not possible because at this point in time forty it's very difficult under the circumstances for trump to be able to promise putin anything particular because congress isn't really of him and against and you're operational with russia i thought earlier mar one of the two leaders were actually about to walk out and give that news conference but that hasn't happened yet as you can see on these live pictures not happening and in fact a protester that seems holding
6:06 pm
a sign up and. we can't exactly read what is holding but he is clearly being. controlled there by the security inside that room in helsinki where the u.s. president and the russian leader about to hold a news conference we don't know who that is but a bit of a commotion. going on in that there as we continue to watch these live pictures out of healthy finland quite interesting what's happening right now a lot of people not happy about this meeting not happy about donald trump being in finland we saw protests earlier in the streets of the finnish capital and then gentleman now being dragged out of that room he was quickly handled by the security people in there i want to bring in our diplomatic editor james sprays who is in helsinki covering this meeting this landmark meeting for us james we've seen just
6:07 pm
a bit of a commotion going on inside the room there where the man being handled removed from the room he was holding a protest sign we couldn't exactly see what he was holding but clearly this meeting between trump and putin has quite a few people upset. yes i can actually i've spoken to that gentleman in the last forty eight hours he has been here he has press accreditation he identified himself to me when i spoke to him as sam from the nation so it appears that from the pictures i've seen he is a man who has been operating as an accredited journalist here i can't give any more details until i check back through my e-mail because at one point during a conversation we he said he had some information he wanted to share with me and i think he sent it to me by email so i might be able to dig out that e-mail up i have to say i get
6:08 pm
a lot of emails and i don't think i've actually read it yet but maybe it will shed a clue on that particular protest but clearly there have been protests here in helsinki on the streets very minor protests in terms of the number we've seen for example in london last week but it is interesting from those that are protesting both president trump and president putin being here that they have a range of very wide issues from the environment to peace campaign as opposed to nuclear weapons to those opposed to russia's human rights record what it's doing in crimea to campaigners on the war in syria. and of course everyone watching this meeting and watching and waiting for this news conference jane to closely watch for signs of whether president trump is friendlier to vladimir putin than he was to nato leaders entering a few days ago your impressions various strains of what's we've seen in the past
6:09 pm
few hours their first interaction. well the first interaction was at the very very beginning of the meeting worth telling you first that they both turned up late to meet putin has a reputation for turning up late his plane arrived an hour late obviously he was coming from moscow and from the world cup after he a lot rides late then president trump delayed his arrival to the president pilot presidential palace or at least it was delayed so the whole meeting was was or was delayed we are now i think going to see this press conference take place because we're seeing sergey lavrov the russian foreign minister mike compare the u.s. secretary of state coming in obviously we seem to lead at the beginning and then it was interesting because president putin seemed quite serious about matters president trump more upbeat talking about the world cup congratulating president putin on the world cup joking about the fact they call it soccer in the united
6:10 pm
states and when he was making those comments president putin seen to me to be rather solemnly looking on and not joining in in that spirit and president trump i think also more optimistic about what could be achieved in this sit down bilateral session alone when the two of them were together which now we know last a two hours and ten minutes and jane says learning now that the protester who was dragged out by the security forces just a short while ago was actually holding a banner that said nuclear ban treaty as you said the respective delegations are out and here now ah the two leaders donald trump and that amir putin about to hold a news conference after their first one on one meeting in how thinking finland let's listen in to what they have to say. and motion we can start working on a stand. yeah mr president. but there is

6:21 pm
scientist former diplomats and military man who would look for some joint is yours and think of how to construct this cooperation how to make it positive on the whole . let about this first meeting before this we had just short talks at international fora we spoke with mr ritter well i hope we start on a stab each other better and i'm grateful to him for that of course near us problems to remain and we couldn't to rectify all the obstacles so it was an impossible to do it but i think what it is very important step in this direction finally i'd like to stress that the creation of the working atmosphere of the negotiations over finnish host country with a lot of this atmosphere where i'm grateful to the finnish leadership of the
6:22 pm
finnish people this president who has sympathy for what they have done we know it created many inconveniences for for residents of half hour so again i apologize for that or this is a switch our meeting brought here and the finnish capital. thank you have just concluded a meeting with president putin on a wide range of critical issues for both of our countries we had direct open deeply productive dialogue went very well before i begin i want to thank president ninnies sto of finland for graciously hosting today's summit. president putin i was saying how lovely it was and what a great job they did i also want to congratulate russia and president putin for having done such an excellent job in hosting the world cup it was really one of the
6:23 pm
best ever and your team also did very well it was a great job i'm here today to continue the proud tradition of bold american diplomacy from the earliest days of our republic american leaders have understood that diplomacy and engagement is preferable to conflict and hostility a productive dialogue is not only good for the united states and good for russian but it is good for the world. the disagreements between our two countries are well known and president putin and i discussed them at length today but if we're going to solve many of the problems facing our world then we're going to have to find ways to cooperated pursuit of shared interests too often in both recent past and long ago we have seen the consequences when diplomacy is left
6:24 pm
on the table. we have also seen the benefits of cooperation in the last century our nation's border alongside one another in the second world war even during the tensions of the cold war when the world looked much different than it does today the united states and russia were able to maintain a strong dialogue but our relationship has never been worse than it is now however that changed as of about four hours ago. i really believe that nothing would be easier politically than to refuse to meet to refuse to engage but that would not accomplish anything as president i cannot make decisions on foreign policy in a futile effort to appease partisan critics or the media or democrats who want to
6:25 pm
do nothing but resist and obstruct constructive dialogue between the united states and russia affords the opportunity to open new pathways toward peace and stability in our world i would rather take a political risk in pursuit of peace. than to risk peace in pursuit of politics as president i will always put what is best for america and what is best for the american people during today's meeting i address directly with president putin the issue of russian interference in our elections i felt this was a message best delivered in person spend a great deal of time talking about it. and president putin may very well want to address it and very strongly because he feels very strongly about it and it's an interesting idea. we also discussed one of the most critical challenges facing
6:26 pm
humanity nuclear proliferation i provided an update on my meeting last month with chairman kim. that we seem to have lost our connection there with. us present donald trump making a statement there after his meeting where. that amir protein i think we have it back to we had it back i think it's there and horrific terrorist attacks and we have agreed to maintain open communication between our security agencies to protect our citizens from this global menace last year we told russia about a planned attack in st petersburg and they were able to stop it cold they found them they stopped them it was no doubt about it i appreciated president putin's phone call afterwards to think and i also emphasized the importance of
6:27 pm
placing pressure on iran to halt its nuclear ambitions and to stop its campaign of violence throughout the area throughout the middle east as we discussed at length the crisis in syria. is a complex one. cooperation between our two countries has the potential to save hundreds of thousands of lives i also made clear that the united states will not allow iran to benefit from our successful campaign against isis we have just about eradicated isis. in the area we also agreed that representatives from our national security council's will need to follow up on all of the issues we address today and to continue the progress we have started right here in helsinki. today's meeting is only the beginning of
6:28 pm
a longer process but we have taken the first steps toward a brighter future and one with a strong dialogue. and a lot of thought our expectations are grounded in realism but our hopes are grounded in americans desire for friendship cooperation and peace and i think i can speak on behalf of russia when i say that also. president putin i want to thank you again for joining me for these important discussions and for advancing open dialogue between russia and the united states our meeting carries on a long tradition of diplomacy between russia the united states for the greater good of all and this was a very constructive day this was a very constructive few hours that we spent together. it's in the interest of both
6:29 pm
of our countries to continue our conversation and we have agreed to do so i'm sure we'll be meeting again in the future often and hopefully we will solve every one of the problems that we discussed today so again president putin thank you very much. but our president is each of the ninety's this moment as the great presidents now the journalists would have a chance to ask the questions two sets of question is it first the russian journalist the last question you please to give your affiliation. my name is alex a mesh called. interfax information agency i will question to president trump during your recent european tour you mentioned that the implementation. of the. north stream to gas pipeline makes europe a hostage of russia and you suggested that you could free europe from this
6:30 pm
by supplying american elegy but this cold winter actually showed that the current model current mechanism of supply of fuel to europe is quite viable at the same time as far as i know us had to buy even russian gas for boston i would question the implementation of your idea as a political team should do it or is a practical one. it will be again formed in the supply and demand make an ism and the first is the consuming countries who will fall into this gap and the second question before the meeting with president putin you called him an adversary a rival and yet you expressed hope that you will be able to bring this relationship to a new level did you manage to do this. you know actually i called him a competitor and a good competitor he is. and i think the word competitor is
6:31 pm
a complement. i think that. we will be competing when you talk about the pipeline i'm not sure necessarily that. it's in the best interests of germany or not but that was a decision that they made will be competing as you know the united states is now. or soon will be but i think it actually is right now the largest in the oil and gas world so we're going to be selling l.n.g. and will have to be competing with the pipeline and i think will compete successfully although there is a little advantage location only so i just wish them luck and when i did i discussed with uncle a muckle in pretty strong tones but. i also know where they're all coming from and. they have a very close source so we'll see how that all works but we have lots of sources in the united states is much different than it was a number of years ago when we were unable to extract what we could extract today so
6:32 pm
today we're number one in the world at that and i think we'll be out there competing very strongly thank you very much. but. if i may i'd throw in some two cents we talked to mr president including this subject as well we are aware of the stance of president trump and i think that we as a major oil and gas power and the united states is a major oil and gas power as well we can work together on regulation of international markets because neither of us is actually interested in the plumbing of the of the prices and the consumers will suffer as well and the consumers in the united states will suffer as well and the shale gas production will suffer because beyond a certain price breakout it's no longer profitable to produce gas but nor
6:33 pm
we are interested in driving prices up because it will drain juice is live just as from all other sectors of the economy from machine building etc so we do have space for cooperation here as the first thing and about the north stream too mr president . voiced his concerns about the possibility of disappearance of transit through a crane and i reassured mr president that russia stands ready to maintain this transit moreover we stand ready to extend this transit contract that there's about to expire next year in case. if the dispute between the economic and this dispute will be settled in the stockholm arbitration court. jeff mason marauders. thank you mr president you tweeted this morning that it's us foolishness is
6:34 pm
stupidity and the moeller probe that is responsible for the decline in u.s. relations with russia. do you hold russia at all accountable for anything in particular and if so what would you what would you consider them that they are responsible for yes i do i hold both countries responsible i think that the united states has been foolish i think we've all been foolish we should have this dialogue a long time ago a long time frankly before i got to office and i think we're all to blame i think that the united states now is step forward along with russia and we're getting together and we have a chance to do some great things whether it's nuclear proliferation in terms of stopping to have to do it ultimately that's probably the most important thing that we can be working on but i do feel that we have both made some mistakes i think that the the probe is a disaster for our country and i think it's kept us apart it's kept us separated
6:35 pm
there was no collusion at all everybody knows it people are being brought out to the fore so far that i know virtually none of it related to the campaign and they did have to try really hard to find somebody that did relate to the campaign that was a clean campaign i beat hillary clinton easily and frankly we beat her and i'm not even saying from the standpoint we won that race and it's a shame that they could even be a little bit of a cloud over it people know that people understand it but the main thing and. we discussed is also zero collusion and it has had a negative impact upon the relationship of the two largest nuclear powers in the world we have ninety percent of nuclear power between the two countries it's ridiculous it's ridiculous what's going on with the pro. for president i could
6:36 pm
follow up as well. why should americans and why should president trump believe your statement that russia did not intervene in the twenty sixth election given the evidence that u.s. intelligence agencies have provided and what you consider extraditing the twelve russian officials that were indicted last week by u.s. grand jury well i'm going to let the president answer the second part of a question but as you know the whole concept of that came up perhaps a little bit before but it came out as a reason why the democrats lost an election which frankly they should have been able to win because the electoral college is much more advantageous for democrats as you know than it is to republicans we won the electoral college by a lot three zero six two to twenty three i believe and that was a well fought. that was a well for battle we did a great job and frankly i'm going to let the president speak to the second part of
6:37 pm
your question but just to say it one time again and i say it all the time. there was no collusion i didn't know the president. there was nobody to collude with there was no collusion with the campaign and every time you hear all of these near twelve and fourteen it's stuff that has nothing to do and frankly they admit these are not people involved in the campaign but to the average reader out there they're saying well maybe that does it doesn't and even the people involved some perhaps told mr oriel though in one case the f.b.i. said there was no lie there was no somebody else said there was. we were in a brilliant campaign and that's why i am president thank you. com. as to who is to be believed and to who is not to be believed. you can trust no one if you if you take this where did you get this idea that president trump trusts me
6:38 pm
or i'd trust him he defends the interests of the united states of america and i do defend the interests of the russian federation. we do have interests that are common we are looking for points of contact. the ratios where our posture is diverge and we are looking for ways to reconcile our differences how to make our effort more meaningful we should not. proceed from the immediate political interests that guide certain political powers in our countries we should be guided by facts could you name a single fact that would definitively prove collusion this is utter nonsense. just like the president recently mentioned. yes the public at large in the united states had a certain perceived opinion of the candidates during the campaign but there's
6:39 pm
nothing particularly extraordinary about it that's usual think. president trump when he was a candidate he mentioned the need to restore the russian u.s. relationship and it's clear that certain part of american society felt sympathetic about it and different people could express their sympathy in different ways but isn't that natural isn't it natural to be sympathetic towards a person who is willing to restore their relationship with our country who wants to work with us we heard the accusations about the concorde country well as far as i know this company hired american lawyers and the accusations doesn't have a bucket doesn't have a fighting chance in the american courts so there's no evidence when it comes to the actual facts so we have to be guided by facts and not. by rumors now let's get back to the issue of these twelve allegedly intelligence officers of russia i don't
6:40 pm
know the full extent of the situation but the president trump mentioned this issue and i will look into it so far i can say the following. the things that he offered of my head we have an acting and existing agreement between the united states of america and the russian federation an existing treaty. but they go back to one thousand nine hundred ninety nine. their mutual assistance on criminal cases and this treaty is in full effect it works quite efficiently. on an average we. initiate about one hundred hundred fifty criminal cases upon requests from foreign states. for instance the last year there was a one extradition case up on the request sent by the united states. so this treaty has specific legal procedures. we can offer.
6:41 pm
that the appropriate commission headed by. by. a special torney mover he can use this treaty as a solid foundation and send the formal and official request to us. so that we would interrogate only to hold the questioning of these individuals who he believes are previewed to some crimes and i will inforce meant. perfectly able to do this questioning and sand the appropriate materials to the united states. moreover. we can meet you halfway we can make another step. well we can actually term it official representatives of the united states including the members of this very commission headed by mr miller we can lead them into the country and they will be present of this questioning but in this case there is a there is another condition and this kind of effort should be
6:42 pm
a mutual one and then we would expect that the americans would reciprocate and they they would question officials including the officers of the law enforcement and intelligence service of the united states and we believe i have to. have something to do with the illegal actions on the territory of russia and we have to request the presence of our law enforcement. for instance we can bring up the mr mr browder in this particular case. business associates of mr browder have earned over one half million dollars in russia they never paid any taxes neither in russia not in the united states and yet the money escaped the country they were transferred to the united states. they sent a huge amount of money four hundred million as
6:43 pm
a contribution to the campaign of hillary clinton well that's their personal case it might have been legal for the contribution itself but the way that money was earned was illegal so we have a solid reason to believe that some intelligence officers a company and and guided these transactions so we have a an interest of questioning them. but we can know that it could be a first step and we can also extend that options abound. and they all can be found in an appropriate legal framework. and if you direct any of your officials to help him do that. when we can yes i did yes i did because he talked about bringing the right us relationship back to normal those same year that moved on there were three more that. i think there can be three questions from the russian people fresh today you have the fore. thank you so much.
6:44 pm
good deal going to everyone my name is. r.t. t.v. channel in english mr president. would you please go in to the details of possibly any specific to rage moments for the u.s. to work together with russia and syria if any of these kind of a rage months were made today or discussed the deposit it's of. my question to president putin and russian since we. we brought up the issue of football several times i ask. russian court is a true and how would you use this act having
6:45 pm
a ball. i guess so and so the first part of the question we've worked with israel for a long and hard for many years many decades i think we've never never has anyone any country been closer than we are. president putin also is helping israel and we both spoke with bibi netanyahu and they would like to do certain things with respect to syria having to do with the safety of israel so in that respect we absolutely would like to work in order to help israel and israel be working with us so both countries would work jointly and i think that when you look at all of the progress that's been made in certain sections with the eradication of isis with about ninety eight percent ninety nine percent there and other things that have taken place that we've done and that frankly russia has helped us with in certain respects but i think that their working with israel is
6:46 pm
a great thing and creating safety for israel is something that both president putin and i would like to see very much one little thing i might add to that is the. helping of people helping of people because you have such horrible. if you see and i've seen reports and i've seen pictures i've seen just about everything and if we can do something to help the people of syria get back into some form of shelter and on a humanitarian basis and that's what the word was really a humanitarian basis i think that both of us would be very interested in doing that and we are we will do that thank you very much excuse me but for now nelson pick agreements for instance between the military well our militaries do. going along militaries actually have gotten along probably better than our political leaders for years but our militaries do get along very well and they do coordinate in syria
6:47 pm
and other places ok thank you. yes we did mention the us we mentioned the humanitarian track. of this issue. yesterday i discussed this with french president mr mccrone and we reached an agreement that together with european countries including france will step up this effort on our behalf we'll provide military cargo aircraft to deliver humanitarian cargo and today i brought up this issue with president trump i think there is plenty of things to to look into. the crucial thing here is that the huge amount of refuges are in turkey in lebanon in jordan in the states that border jason to syria if we help them help them migrate three pressure upon
6:48 pm
the european states or will drop will be decreased many fault and i believe it's crucial from any point of view from humanitarian point of view from the point of view of helping people help all the refugees. and in general. i agree i concur with president trump our military cooperate quite successfully together they do get along and i hope they will be able to do so in future and we will keep working in the u.s. to now for much i mean russia turkey and iran which i informed president trump about. but we do stand ready to link this efforts to this so-called so-called small group of states so that the process would be a broader one that would be a multidimensional one and so that we will be able to maximize our fighting chance to put together the ultimate success in the in the issue of syria and speaking of

putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today and what he did is that incredible offer he offered to have the people working on the case come and work with their investigators with respect to the twelve people i think that's an incredible offer thank you but. i like to add something to this. after all i was the intelligence officer myself. and i do know how those years made out just a quick just second. as the first thing now the second thing. i believe that russia is a democratic state and i hope you're not denying this right to your own country you're not denying that the united states is a democracy do you believe united states is a democracy. and if so if it is a democratic state then the final conclusion in this kind of dispute can only be

delivered by a trial by the court and not by the executive by the law enforcement. for instance the concorde company that was brought up is being accused it's been accused of interference but this company does not constitute the russian state it doesn't represent the russian state and i brought several examples before. well you have a lot of individuals in the united states take george soros for instance with multi billion. capitals but it does that make him for. his position because for sure the posture of the united states no it does not was the same case various the issue of trying a case in the court and a final. that the final say is for the court to deliver. we are now talking about the private in the individuals and not about particular

states and as far as the most recent allegations is concerned about the russian intelligence officers we do have an intergovernmental treaty please do send us the request we will analyze it properly and will send a formal response and as i said we can extend this cup aeration but we should do it on a reciprocal basis because we want to wait. russian counterparts to provide us access to the persons of interest for us who we believe can have something to do with intelligence so let's discuss the specific issues and not use the russia and the us relationship as a loose change there was a change for this internal political struggle. a question for president for president and thank you two questions for you sir can you tell me what president tried may have indicated to you about officially recognizing crimea as part of russia and then secondly sir do you just in the russian government have any

political analyst mo and bashara so there's a lot of anticipation for this meeting what do you think the biggest take home is from that. well. my sense is it was businesslike it was a businesslike meeting it was a business like press conference not a lot of business was accomplished in the business like meeting. i think the words that comes out more than anything else was the search for harmony. both between the two leaders and between their two countries and i think the idea is we have not exactly reached anything concrete on any of the particular issues of concern to both of us in our countries none of the regional issues none of the global issues but in terms of harmony of relations in terms of. getting the relations out of the war space that where as that was described by president trump

the worst relations ever or that that he inherited from his but this also is that that this point in time this is the beginning of something very different as president from what it said to me it was interested on that issue that the state of the relations before the meeting trump century that it was the u.s. is that it was to blame for the state relations he didn't mention any of the the the facts like the crime in or the other things that actually contributed to the bet but in the news conference he said there was blame on on each side of but it is interesting also that the only issue of crime it proved instead we disagree on that in their commission is clear it was illegal and that's not all physician there's always that they've been able to park all these things and say we disagree on this we disagree on that but we can we can we can get a reasonable a vote of sorts if we don't something like that for instance iran where would what we're trying to achieve in this meeting is there anything concrete it will apparently not apparently on the questions of iran question of syria they have not really mended fences or they have not found common grounds except that bit the

president put it in for size which is the humanitarian bit i don't know if something secret happened but whatever came out of the press conference does not signal that they have arrived at strategic. agreement on the future of syria the future of assad the future of peace within syria and certainly the future of iran iran nuclear deal. will and iran's influence within syria i think certainly put it doesn't seem to have given any ground to president trump on that and i think we also heard from him before that meeting saying we don't exactly see eye to eye on iran now look on the question of crimea and so on so forth because i think then today it's going to be ukraine for iran where they were to give me on an iran i'll give you back on crimea and so on and so forth but certainly on the question of ukraine and the question of who is responsible for the worsening of relations i think president trump street.
