and in europe and international observers keep a close eye on zimbabwe's first elections without longtime ruler robert mugabe. and i'm far as well be here with all the sporting including the latest from the open championship in scotland where there is a two way tie for the lead at the end of round two. has been another day of escalating violence at the gaza border with israel israeli airstrikes and tank fire and hamas positions in gaza killed at least four people three of them hamas members and the israeli military says gunfire at the gaza border fatally wounded a soldier the first israeli killed since the protests began on march thirtieth at least one hundred forty nine palestinians have died in the border demonstrations as

months ago the israeli army shot this man in the leg during a protest in april on the budget itself that unless i'm sending a message to the occupiers that this is our land and you came and took it from us you jews who came from france in england and around the world here it is our land and we inherited it from our grandfathers and before them. the israeli government is under pressure by some politicians to launch a large scale military offensive to stop the protesters. as the day ended israeli fighter jets targeted various hamas bases across gaza including this one in the densely populated neighborhood of z. tune. the ministry of health says at least three civilians were injured in this attack. well mohammed jim is live for us now in west jerusalem ahmed we know now that an israeli soldier was killed on

the gaza border how might israeli government respond or mariam we've just heard in the last twenty minutes or so from the israeli army another statement this clarifying further that this operation this wide scale attack that they say is going on in gaza is still ongoing that's according to the israeli army they say that the i.d.f. that's the israeli defense forces recently completed an additional attack on twenty five military targets located in the how mass but talian headquarters in units in the southern gaza strip targeted were warehouses aerial defense systems observation posts and even more this really goes to show how much things have escalated now it's not really all that much of a surprise considering the fact that even early this morning we've been hearing from israeli officials particularly the israeli defense minister avigdor lieberman he was in the town of there ought that's on israel's border with gaza he told the
12:06 am
assembled audience there that essentially hamas better watch out that israel was not going to back away from a confrontation if they thought that more violence was emanating from gaza today take a listen to more of what the israeli defense minister had to say several hours ago . oh oh oh well we tried to be sensible and responsible but the heads of hamas are leading us to a defensive situation a situation where we would have to go for a painful military operation not for the sake of appearance but an actual operation which will be one and a painful one. so these rainy security cabinet level said been meeting tonight mohammed any indication as to what they might do next. on this particular issue miriam we've not been able to get any details from the israeli army we have contacted them numerous times the past several hours since the israeli media outlets started reporting that this emergency security cabinet session was ongoing
12:07 am
at the moment we don't know if it's actually still going on the army will not confirm it there are reports in israeli media that it is ongoing obviously that makes many here wonder if the operations inside gaza being conducted by the israeli army are going to continue if in fact this is going to escalate even further so a lot of tension right now people are very concerned we're looking for more clarity from the israeli defense forces from the israeli army to find out exactly what's going on as i told you before we heard from the israeli army that this operation is ongoing at this hour but it's not clear about how much longer might be going on and how much longer this might escalate from leicester islamic. we go to developments in syria now rebels in the southwest province of can attract started leaving the area after giving up that fight against the government in the front tail of the israeli occupied golan heights the surrender is an important

12:15 am
saying this was fake news and that the president never had such a relationship the recording seems to contradict that statement of course the president at the time of this alleged affair also married with an infant son certainly problematic on a personal level so this really brings up the question of what the president knew and when he knew it it's also a concern given the fact that there is a separate investigation that is ongoing in all of this and that is the one being conducted by robert muller the special counsel well these two investigations are separate the one into michael cohen trumps personal attorney and the one into whether or not there was russian interference in the twenty sixteen u.s. election and whether the truck campaign colluded with russia with this information is shared it could be problematic for the president given the fact that if michael cohen in order to save himself from the charges he is currently facing he could decide to cooperate with the special counsel and that could certainly be risky for

12:25 am
that this test is either enough or that it's actually going to prove very effective in the long run particularly because i think we found a technology that mostly people will find some other kind of what. if they're really motivated to spread misinformation or woman it's a country where there isn't always a lot of trust in institutions i know sometimes we see these surveys saying india does have this great trust in the government will they have trust in the media i actually think that it's a country where trust is often in very short supply and so people sense of trust comes from you know trusting people in their social network maybe friends maybe relatives maybe community members and so i think that's where really the challenge lies so people will still want to get their information from people that they think are credible and very often those people are people in there you know whether they're people who've never been to by strong ties or whether they're bound to them by weak ties i think that's where they're trying to get the information from and so i'm not as i said before i don't think that either regulation or you know trying to

a discussion with him about payments to an ex playboy model who says she had an affair with the u.s. president. now the green party in the u.s. is hoping to benefit from the country's current political impasse at november's midterm elections the party believes it can take advantage of anger at the trumpet ministration and frustration with the democratic party around two hundred candidates and their supporters holding their annual meeting in the state of utah christian salumi hospital. in salt lake city utah against a backdrop of beautiful local scenery and national political turmoil the green party is holding its annual national meeting. these left leaning green candidates are hoping to capitalize on american voters frustration with an increasingly polarized two party system and make a mark in the upcoming midterm elections i'm here to represent a better way forward i'm here to represent policies built on empathy built on the
12:31 am
idea of the things that we do to our impact all of us green site studies that show sixty percent of americans want a third party option whether it's protecting the environment social justice or immigration the greens insist that they not democrats are the truly progressive party and unlike democrats and republicans they are free from the influence of corporate money. to. just sign ran for president on the green party ticket in two thousand and sixteen she got less than one percent of the vote nationwide but some democrats blame her for hillary clinton's loss they queue stine of siphoning democratic votes in states like michigan and wisconsin that clinton narrowly lost to donald trump many believe greens would have more impact if they worked with democrats to unite under the banner of the democratic party to essentially fight for the soul of the democratic party i think is a smart strategy for people on the left who need a place not only where they can feel at home but where they can more importantly
12:32 am
where they can have an effect on our country right now. shereen gorani agrees she shares a lot of the greens frustrations. but decided to run for congress as a democrat i think third party politics has risen to give people that sort of sense that they could have a voice unfortunately as the system works we're going to have more success if we can get in line behind one of these two major parties and really start talking about the issues that matter to everyday people but the green say democrats aren't doing enough the democrats have traditionally not been able to stand up they've offered no solutions and in fact being also corporate backed they will always choose their corporate donors and the elite over whether people in the planet me they may be small in numbers but greens are fired up. setting their sights on the midterm elections hoping to change not only the direction of american policy but the election system itself kristen salumi al jazeera salt lake city utah. i'm
12:33 am
joined now from los angeles by bill schneider a political analyst and author of standoff how america became ungovernable thank you very much for speaking to us is the green party in a position to win more voters in november midterm elections. i don't think so because the democratic party whatever the complaints may be from the left the democratic party is really pretty united in its distrust and even hatred for donald trump i think that's going to be enough to hold democrats together in twenty eighteen how have the green party then impacted the general political landscape have they contributed to a shift in the balance of power towards the left wing of the democratic party possibly. well it they might have made some contribution towards that the democratic party is having an argument among themselves right now over how whether to move to the left and how far i'd say the
12:34 am
biggest force in that debate is not the green party it's bernie sanders the independent senator from vermont who got about forty five forty three percent i think of the primary vote in two thousand and sixteen his people are there they're very are they're very powerful they argue that the party made a mistake in nominating hillary clinton who lost instead of bernie sanders and his voice is still a very strong voice in the democratic party certainly stronger than the greens right but what does that mean then will increasingly have to the left help or hinder the democratic party's chances in november well i don't think the parties is moving to the left as a whole party some candidates are from the left we saw some upsets in primaries where the left defeated candidates who are part of the democratic establishment but
12:35 am
it varies right now democrats are doing very well in the polls because they represent the alternative to trump to vote democratic is to send a message i want to stop donald trump that's a message centrist democrats left wing democrats radicals even greens agree with and really the only way to make that happen is to vote for a democrat which is strengthening the democratic party right now and in a way it's weakening the greens what does all this mean for president on the trunk what's at stake for him in november. well what's this thank you for him is that the democrats they are to riri a very good chance of taking over the house of representatives and possibly a smaller chance of taking over the senate and the message will be very simple stop trump that's the whole message and the democrats will get that message if they are in charge of the house of representatives they will do everything to stop trying to defeat his policies they can't stop his nominations because nominations don't go to
12:36 am
the house they go to the senate and there we simply don't know what's going to happen but democrats will get that message loud and clear and the only question in the house will be do will they also see a mandate to vote to impeach president trump that's not clear yet but that would be the most extreme version of the message you can imagine. without getting too technical just give us a broad brush view of how many seats are in contest in november how how many seats could the republicans lose potentially well there i think there are twenty three democrats need to pick up twenty three seats which is well within the prospect for this year's election probably about at least fifty seats are in play all over the country most of them are suburban seats outside of the major cities there inhabited by affluent and well educated voters
12:37 am
who have a history of supporting republicans the problem is that trumps republican party is bleeding support from affluent well educated voters who simply can't accept donald trump they can't stand him there's a big educational difference now in american politics the better educated you are the less likely you are to support donald trump and that's what's driving a lot of republicans away and that means that a lot of these suburban districts outside of cities like philadelphia and washington are are now in play for the election in november it'll be a fascinating one to thank you very much bill schneider in los angeles. now the e.u. says the u.k.'s new bricks it plan is constructive but there is still concerns about what the with about the withdrawal agreement itself the british prime minister terry's amazed balancing the demands of the program faction in our party with the need to maintain close ties to the e.u. in order to avoid a hard border with their public of island joan hull reports could this be the
