1:01 pm
we travel to a remote community in greenland living in fear of a natural wonder and i'm santa hummus with all the sports as one of the biggest stars in world football walks away from his national team. announcing his retirement from the german side citing racism and disrespect we'll have all the details later in the program. all three gunmen who stormed the kurdish regional government building in appeal in northern iraq have reportedly been killed. it follows a five hour standoff with security forces in the center of the city the group shot its way into the building in the early morning hours injuring at least two policeman at least one of them blew him self up. live now to amman in baghdad
1:02 pm
so the attack is over water authorities saying about a lot of unanswered questions in iraq. exactly but before i get to that can i just correct you there let me give you the latest information two of the assailants have been killed one of them looms self up with a suicide bomb the other was killed by iraqi sniper fire the third has actually been gravely injured and is in iraq in custody according to code kurdish security source says the attack began around seven am when the gunman went into the erbil gov building and they took one person hostage during that five hour attack one fifty five year old man was also killed in the hostage was subsequently released so we've had one casualty and two the suicide bombers who the attackers being killed and one of them gravely injured and taken into custody questions as you say all
1:03 pm
being asked how were they able to get into that building it's very unusual to be able to have attacks of this nature has been spared much of the violence of the rest of the country as seen in the last attack by eisel that was in two thousand and fifteen against the u.s. consulate in color area of bill so already people are blaming myself for this attack indeed the mayor of below says it's definitely i still have we haven't got a security source confirmation on that as of yet all right good stuff there from iran hala reporting to us on the situation that it's continued to talk about this though is a the ladley he's an iraqi writer and political analyst joins us now on skype from the tunisian capital tunis good to have you with us so as all reports have mentioned already a lot of officials pointing the finger at does it look like an ice floe tack to you . well it's certainly reasonable to assume that it's isis i mean first of all you know they're still active in iraq and very active in areas close to be including
1:04 pm
the border area that you have to be. and the border areas between could who can slaughter dean and it's right there anyone who's been to those areas knows house how close i could who is to abuse very very close and certainly not a stretch to assume that they could reach out to the first of all second of all the very active third of all there if you want a group that still remains very active at the moment so it's very fair to assume that it's nice to talk and also the mechanisms the means that they used in order to carry on as it appears to be very similar to what they've done in many places in the past including in had been in other places why an attack on this building that . well i don't i can't really answer that question other than to say that there are lots of targets that are possible for that it doesn't really matter which building for them specifically what matters to them is to create chaos to inflict maximum damage to terrorize people really and it may be the case that the building they
1:05 pm
consider to be a soft target or a softer target than other targets you know and of course it's you know it's a provincial government buildings so it belongs to the to the iraqi stage and to the kurdistan regional government and so it is so it's also highly symbolic in that sense to show the iraqi state and the christan regional government are still very vulnerable to terrorist attacks of this nature so what are probably explains it i would say. what sort of impact will this attack have i mean the bill northern iraq scene is relatively safe and stable now hasn't been an attack like this for a while has the. well it certainly is a lot safer than most of the rest of iraq if not all of the rest of iraq. and you know it is unusual however it's not unheard of there have been some attacks over the last few years it's fairly infrequent but it has happened on itself this particular time does represent a change in the trend we have to wait and see what happens in the coming weeks and months what's likely to happen over the future period is basically what we're used
1:06 pm
to which is not much you know iraqi officials you know secured institutions including kurdistan officials tend not to react very quickly and one attack on and so on itself will probably not be too i mean to change what would what would you rate this if this target were to lead to better security cooperation between baghdad and the there's clearly a major problem between the two sides particularly after the developments took place in good group last year which is basically allowed or isis to recover and regroup in areas around kid who. like to dean in other places and you know it's a clear indication there's a target that recovering isis in those areas are out for them to launch an attack of this nature so beach ridge if the two sides were not to wake up and realize a greater is a good cooperation were necessary should take place right away but judging from previous experience and what's been happening with the past few months it's unlikely to happen as a result of this attack lord are good to get your analysis on that fact so much
1:07 pm
think that's move you next door to iraq how iranian state media is condemning a tweet by u.s. president donald trump as a passive reaction to remarks by iran's leader president has done rouhani had insisted the u.s. cannot inside the reins against the government and address trump specifically to say war with iran is the mother of all wars that didn't stop secretary of state might pompei o from saying soon after the united states supports arabians protesting against the government in his speech earlier. i mean american community on pay a warm to her on its exports will be squeezed in the next few months as the us re imposes sanctions trumps tweets built on that sentiment hours later telling rouhani to never threaten the u.s. again or face what he called consequences like never before charlotte ballasts reports with television as their platform
1:08 pm
a ratcheting up of thrifts between iran's president hassan rouhani and the trumpet ministration on sunday secretary of state mike compare spent a full twenty six minutes criticizing rouhani and his leadership the ayatollah are in on the act to judging by their best work they say are more concerned with riches than religion these hypocritical holy men advice all kinds of cricket's games to become some of the wealthiest men on earth while there are people suffer the u.s. administration is attacking iran from multiple angles in may president trump withdrew from the twenty fifteen nuclear court in august he will reimpose sanctions aimed at crippling iran's economy pompei or warned tehran its exports will be squeezed in the coming months and is pressuring allies to stop importing iranian oil by november its biggest source of income and now the u.s. administration is seizing on process in iran to begin a media campaign president rouhani referred to the strategy and threaten trump
1:09 pm
against turning his people against him but doma shootable as you know which don't play with the lion's tail you will regret it forever you cannot carry out these measures it is out of your capability you cannot force during ins to act against their own country you have clearly shown you are against the iranian people. those comments got this response from president trump who tweeted in capital letters never ever threaten the united states again or you will suffer consequences the likes of which few throughout history have ever suffered before we are no longer a country that will stand for your demented words of violence and death be cautious . to tweet is a flashback to trump and north korean leader kim jong un kim was also at the wrong end of a new caps tirade last year for the two leaders came together at a summit in singapore in june. the difference with iran is protests the soaring cost of living has pushed iranians to the streets numbers not seen since twenty
1:10 pm
twelve but analysts say a media campaign to win them over will be received as u.s. propaganda i think it's quite clear that as much as they are frustrated and deeply frustrated with the government of iran they're not jumping onto trump side anytime soon from california to tehran the high stakes verbal sparring we watched by its target audience iranian people shallop alice al-jazeera. ted hoff is a professor of international relations at the national university of singapore joins us now via skype from singapore good to have you with us on this one so. let's start with the rhetoric from by the u.s. president donald trump his tweets is this simply rhetoric or is he really considering some kind of unprocessed starkly unprecedented action against iran. i
1:11 pm
know it's hard to take trump seriously anymore is kind of the road to president. but unfortunately in this case he has you know a lot of support within the republican party and congress and the bureaucracy in the united states you know unlike the cases where he says you know crazy and saying things about russia nato or the tree system the last seventy years when he talks about iran he finds a lot of resonance within the republican party so part of the democratic party and even among tens of millions of american people who fight against iran. what options does he have than. well not a lot me who will pose the sanctions but you know when you impose sanctions on a country they're only as good as. the universality with which to implement them
1:12 pm
and already you know russia and china are trying to develop alternative banking arrangements to avoid using the us banking system so will use the chinese renminbi as the cleary currency for buying an iranian oil and gas. when pump aoe talks about how do you hope that other countries will join us to this pressure em pay me i mean literally on one hand count the number of countries that support the united states withdraw from the nuclear weapons agreement we're talking about israel u.a.e. saudi arabia that's it russia china u.k. france all the rest of the world owes the united states on withdrawal from the. right there if i could jump it can the u.s. then shut down the round so oil exports the sort of zero option that some officials
1:13 pm
went oh about this is it this is even more dangerous right because rouhani has already that has already stated that kind of shutdown with the declaration of war against iran and iran with then respond in an asymmetrical way that we saw from the one nine hundred eighty s. and basically you know maybe tanker and soon the straits of hormuz and falls you know world economic crisis skyrocketed in the price of oil. oh i will leave it there for now thanks how much has health. now hundreds of thousands of children in china may have been given sub standard vaccines health regulators found and drug maker violated safety standards it's the second scandal to hit the company in the past week adrian brown has more from beijing. it is a worrying time for parents across china outside beijing's top children's hospital
1:14 pm
we found many still absorbing the fact the china's second largest pharmaceutical company has been producing vaccines for babies that are fake you know your god you know the people who made this fabricated vaccine should be executed right away without any hesitation they did it to babies not adults he added this mother is especially concerned her one year old son was inoculated for rabies last month he has a fever and the scandal has heightened her anxiety my son was born very weak he always has been this now his dad and i don't know if it's related to the fake vaccines in china or vaccinations to prevent diseases like tetanus hooping cough and rabies are free but now some parents no longer trust the made in china versions. and the media these free chinese vaccines cannot meet correct safety standards i would have to think about buying imported vaccine so far there have been no reports of children
1:15 pm
harmed by the vaccine or having contracted rabies. the trunk shroom biotechnology company in northeast china produced the fake vaccines executives have now admitted falsifying test results for its rabies vaccine production is halted all vaccines are being recalled were still just last thursday this same company was fined over its substandard production of other vaccines so a tiny she at the end after we found out that the company forged the records of production and production inspections and modified technical parameters and equipment at will the actions seriously violated their relevance to belay sions of chinese law this scandal broke four days ago but it wasn't until sunday night the china's premier league chang spoke out urging severe punishment for all those responsible now the government says that all companies are produced vaccines in china will be subject to unannounced inspections this industry was already in
1:16 pm
trouble just two years ago another pharmaceutical company was found to have improperly stored tens of millions of dollars worth of vaccines many of them had expired but in unusually open coverage china's state controlled media have called for an overhaul of an industry which one newspaper editorial said had been contaminated by scandals adrian brown al jazeera beijing. plenty more still ahead on the news hour including we look at emerging force that could shake up politics in pakistan no reprieve from a hate wave as record scorching temperatures hit japan. and in sports history is made at the open championship in scotland allianz wins a golf major right. now the syrian regime and its ally russia have stepped up their offensive against eisel
1:17 pm
controlled areas in the southwestern part of the country people in northern israel have reported hearing sirens go live now stephanie decker she is in these radio occupied golan heights sirens puffs of smoke what's going on now there there is sirens earlier all in the israeli army telling us that this was because they feared incoming but basically they said that rockets landed inside syria what we've been watching throughout the day you're seeing it now sam is the intensive campaign by the syrian government of course backed by the russians to take what is this last pulkit of opposition control that the group in charge here is affiliated with i still there is no negotiation no deal on the table for them we've seen a lot of airstrikes tank shelling from this part in front of us and also from the other side so it looks like they're advancing on two fronts also just where we are
1:18 pm
we've been here in an hour over the last couple of weeks and before we never really saw any sort of israeli army presence today that has changed we've seen multiple platoons of soldiers calmly really but they are monitoring what is happening behind as they have cameras are taking pictures keeping a very close eye on what is a very close conflict. stay with us for a second stephanie because color related to this is what we heard not too long ago benjamin netanyahu talking about his upcoming meeting with the russian foreign minister. for virtual machine look i will meet with the delegation today with the approval of the russian foreign minister sergei lavrov and russian chief of staff valery get saddam out of the delegation arrives following the request of president putin during a conversation that he had with me a couple of days ago i will discuss the regional issues and mainly the situation in syria so stephanie do we know what the mission will be of the russian delegation going there. well they'll certainly be discussing syria i think they will be
1:19 pm
discussing that surprising evacuation of the white helmets that israel undertook at the request of the americans of the canadians and others we've had the syrian government come out today and condemn it so it's not clear very loud plane in the sky now it's not clear whether the russians were informed of it or not we would assume so but it's not clear and of course they will be discussing syria why. you can hear the jet there oh there you go see they just i mean to the right. and because this is such a close conflict as you're seeing now sammy this is the choice for us as you know. that area that we can see smoke is that inside the occupied golan heights the israeli occupied golan heights all the rest of syria no that is that is the syrian that is the syrian side but it's incredibly close to the fence i mean i can see the the fence you can probably see it and it's very close to those tents in front that
1:20 pm
is the syrian side sami but it shows you just how close it is a much some you can you see the fence there's probably a fence yes you can see the fence in your shot that is the line sami between the israeli occupied golan heights and the syrian side and of course israel's main concern here is not about the conflict it's about iran and about iranian forces. with one assumes would that be a pro so i want to say syrian jet but a program jet in syria or russia bombing some positions by the syrian opposition is that basically what we're looking at. yes you're looking at i can tell you whose jet it is but certainly either syrian regime jet or russian jet and this has been going out for the last couple of hours intensely in front of us and also to the other side of the other area what this group called the taliban why lead group they're affiliated with ice and what you've seen happening here throughout the last month or so is also the push by the syrian regime and the russians and then
1:21 pm
forcibly a negotiation deal with the rebels seeing those that don't agree then move further towards the north so there is that i'm not so i'm sorry is that a lot of the intention of jumping in and interrupt here but this is really interesting i think we should clarify for viewers what we've been talking about the last few days is how opposition groups are being bussed out and are heading to live think clearly there are still some groups left opposition syrian opposition groups left and in the southwest can you clarify a little bit who's left and what the strategy is. yes i was just mentioning the khaled bin why lead brigade who are affiliated with eisel these are the ones in this pocket there is no negotiation deal being offered to them at the moment the rest of the deals have been with other rebel groups along this border the most recent one in this is a little further north of where we are those buses even today still leaving and these are the rebels and their families who do not agree to any form of but there's
1:22 pm
another one actually miss i made to the right so yes either russian or syrian jet sami no negotiations here we have heard that civilians have been fleeing this area over the last couple of days i cannot give you an exact assessment of how many civilians remain in this area but again as you see a very active campaign no deal on the table for the group in charge here and sami just briefly to get back to your question this is the last remaining pocket of rebel held territory in southwestern syria so this what you're watching is the government's campaign helped by russia to take back the entire part of south western syria thanks for bearing with our staff i mean i think it gives viewers a really good look at a live war going on and what it means to have that sort of conflict in such a sensitive area with clearly some civilians still left in there thanks so much stephanie doing a great job now young woman is dead another thirteen people have been wounded after
1:23 pm
a shooting in toronto police say the gunman was killed after an exchange of fire with officers the attack happened in a popular area of the city known as greek town the motive still unclear but toronto's mayor says the canadian city has a problem with guns. as voters in pakistan get ready to elect a new government there's been more violence and candidate for the headache insaf party which is led by former cricketer mankind was killed in an attack in my own car and that's in the northwest of the country sort of the gun the poor died from his injuries after his car was targeted by suicide bomber he was a former agriculture minister three other people were injured take a closer look at some of the candidates in pakistan's election shahbaz sharif is

press club where the human rights commission of pakistan has just held a news conference alleging serious allegations of the misuse of media by pakistani state agencies including its intelligence agency the portion of media personnel and. a very violent campaign violence against political actors in this political fight as elections have been coming through the human rights commission of pakistan says that biggest agencies have not just stopped the newspapers from being distributed but also persons just say what they should and should not they have also been saying here in this news conference is that the party of pakistan tehreek e insaf where iran. has been given undue prominence by various on the behest of the intelligence agencies so it's a very charged atmosphere in the city of lahore between going from one constituent

this in the. nation being. nothing new. blaming the military. and everything. that it will be a peaceful election because they've already seen. the candidates being from different political party. on the shot of his eighty is a political analyst and policy development adviser joins us now from the pakistani capital good to have you with us. is this a done deal fall emraan khan absolutely not it's not it's not over until the fat
1:29 pm
lady sings and she sings tomorrow the people of pakistan have repeatedly asserted their autonomy and their freedom when it comes to election day many elections have been engineered or plumbed and this this election has sadly been no different from many others in the past but that doesn't mean that the people of pakistan will accept the attempts to influence the outcome of this election this is ultimately going to be a choice that the people make and if there are attempts tomorrow to undermine the freeness fairness and credibility of the credibility of the election it's only going to undermine whatever comes there after so i think we still have a chance to extract a reasonably good outcome and that outcome will be whatever it is that the people of pakistan choose but the notion somehow that imran khan has already won this election i think is a fallacious one but one that certainly many people have tried to insert into the
1:30 pm
discourse you say many people trying to insert it do you believe the military is backing him which seems to be the belief of at least some in the public. well i think there's. there's a widespread belief and i think that there's some degree of truth to the to the idea that there are people within the military establishment that are very big non-con fans they really think very highly of his message and his personality but to suggest that the entire military is systematically backing a broad column would do i mean if it's true it would convey some very worrying things about the military in pakistan and it would also be inconsistent with the military has the military really is about a pox on the security and to the extent that it can sort of control of pakistan whereas a man khan is about imran khan and it showed in control of pakistan by iran so i think there's a there's a fundamental inconsistency intention there if the military has indeed backed him
1:31 pm
on on and he does become prime minister the military is about to discover a very unmanageable proxy in the very near future what do you make of the suggestion that perhaps that what the military ultimately want is a very fragmented civilian rule also a civilian political map buying college in the rise of not only among calm but also the sort of inclusion of more militant elements into the political process so that the ami keeps its turf under its control. look i don't think that the army's turf was in it was that it was ever at any risk of. being taken over by the pm eleanor nobody should leave so i think again i think that notion is is not necessarily true i think there is definitely areas of pakistani national life that the military is very guarded about and likes to likes to defend itself but ultimately i think that it undermines pakistani national security to have
1:32 pm
constantly fragmented and unstable color takes so if there are people in the military who want instability and a fragmented parliament they're acting against the best and national security interests of this country and i'm confident that that at least. as an institution and formal terms that is not the case all right thanks for your analysis on that one shot of the evening. and a few moments we'll have all the way though with stuff called on also still ahead on al-jazeera lewis hamilton is back on top of the formula one championship standings out to his closest rival crushes out in the rain and the german ground.

the weather sponsored by cattle las. hello there tropical storms are still causing a fair amount of flooding over parts of asia at the moment for the northern part of it now we're now seeing these pictures this is where a deadly storm struck just a few days ago that was song tin we thought it would fizzle out but actually what it did is it turned back around and headed back over the gulf of tonkin and so it's here at the moment and now it's partially working its way towards the north and it has reformed now it's not a particularly intense storm as far as the winds go but it distil going to give us a period of very heavy rain as it gradually meanders its way northward and it does it's only moving at around eleven kilometers per hour so very slowly and this whole region is going to see a period of prolonged rain that will give us more in the way of flooding so what we're expecting then it's the southern parts of china where we see the worst of the weather on choose day and that gradually tracks its way towards the west you can see the dark blues here on our chart for wednesday in the northern parts of vietnam and that's where we've already seen the flooding so full force here it was like
1:34 pm
these are going to get worse also in the same chart if you look up towards the north shanghai has just seen a tropical storm but that one has now moved away instead we've got this blob of cloud here that's working its way north with it doesn't look too intense but it is a tropical depression and what it's going to do is bring us yet more heavy rain to a region that's already waterlogged. the weather sponsored by qatar airways. when people think of cuba they think revolution but it's undergoing a revolution believe. with cuba it's an. we're here to discover if those changes are reflected in the plea that this is q what is the q. and a. restaurant owner i'm trying to read more. a.j. it's on al-jazeera. an insider's perspective just six months

ago we were at the brink of a war of the real donald trump i think he makes comments that he probably shouldn't make from the former campaign national security director tom was in a class all by himself and for the thirty years i've known donald he creates his own reality maybe he goes head to head with j.d. coolidge there has been no evidence that shows collusion if that's not collusion if that's not working with russian what is on al-jazeera. they're watching al-jazeera time to recap our headlines now three gunmen have been killed after they stormed the kurdish regional government building in appeal follows a five hour standoff in the center of the northern iraqi city the group shot its

that he was able to deliver a piece that wasn't over an hour and a half later which is quite historic the first in philippine history that the state of the nation address of the president what he did promise it was going to be brief he read the beach most of it really was a reiteration of a promise to continue his. war on drugs. the war on drugs will be as chilling as the day it began and there was a lot of appeal in this beach basically about pursuing all of the reforms that he promised but again these have been overshadowed by the politics that is really in his own party right at the house floor which is really has been seen as the spectacle here and behind me there's been thousands of protesters here basically calling on the president to resign they think this administration is oppressive.

a while so far it looks like wednesday and thursday there's a chance of showers if you get a shower that should help exactly but it's hit and miss so you might be ok but only a mile up the road there might not get a shower and things stay going to be hot one thing that came to mind i was reading that it's hotter twelve degrees a thing than it should be or usually is why. just that if there's a high pressure over the top and so the temperatures have been soaring and because this is happening day on day on day you've got a sequence where the temperatures start to climb you would never get a maximum temperature just one hot day it would have to be over sequence so the sequences happen and then that's when you get your extreme temperatures is it possible to say if this is global warming i know it's controversial subject but when you look at things it's not really controversial we know now that the earth is heating out can we say this one particular event wouldn't have happened without human interaction no we can't say that but what we can say is we are expecting more
1:43 pm
of these kind of things to happen so we're expecting more heat waves to happen and for the heat waves we see to be more intense so this is in line with what we expect with climate change but we can't definitely say that this one definitely was climate change or you know without it would have happened it fits the pattern exactly fits the pattern all right thanks to. the tiny coastal village in greenland has been on edge for more than a wake up to an eleven million tonne iceberg drifted next to the settlement it's the largest class and many of seen if it breaks up people fear the waves could wipe out their community clock reports from the remote village of inner suit helicopters in these parts of the lifeline for small communities they provide all services especially in times of crisis.
