friday. and yemen's drone strike has hit our port. it didn't hurt. north korea has returned the remains of some american soldiers killed during the korean war kim promised to return the bodies during his meeting with donald trump in june and the eight thousand u.s. soldiers listed as missing from the korean war and the remains of five thousand three hundred all believed to still be in north korea friday marks the sixty fifth anniversary of the armistice and the white house is praising kim jong un for delivering on promises made at last month's singapore summit saying today the chairman is for funding part of the commitment he made to the president to return our fallen american service members were encouraged by north korea's actions and the momentum for positive change. joins us now from washington d.c.
6:02 am
these were ten this return of these remains of u.s. troops one of the few clear actionable points to come from the singapore summit did have a take longer than expected what was the process here. you know no one knows really why this took so long because many analysts were saying this was one of the more simple processes that should have happened and a lot of analysts and critics here in the u.s. that a lot of. these remains should have actually been handed over to the americans even before president donald trump agreed to meet with kim jong un but nevertheless it didn't happen it was in the communique has happened now but it's unclear why it took so long after the singapore summit for this to happen but clearly there were a lot of questions about that but we do know that secretary of state pompei o just made a recent trip over to north korea and most likely this was on very high up on his agenda pushing the north koreans to facilitate this hand-over hand over which now
6:03 am
apparently has happened now that means somebody padre sions of the is having that but how many more u.s. troops are still unaccounted for on the peninsula yeah more than sixty five years after the war and according to u.s. government there's about five thousand three hundred u.s. service members that did not return after the war now how many of those do the north koreans still have some remains of that's a little unclear it's believed that the north koreans have about one hundred twenty to two hundred sets of remains of u.s. service members that are ready to be handed over at some point it's unclear how many were handed over in this in this most recent and over of remains right now but clearly there are still a lot of u.s. service members that are still unaccounted for from that war so many decades ago so
6:04 am
i believe that there are a number of remains on the plane that's just arrived down and touched down in south korea what's the process now what happens to these remains get identified. yeah well there did the remains landed friend an air force plane it on air base in south korea they were met by several thousand u.s. service members there we're told in. a formal act of respect i guess you could say and now we're told that there are going to be some military officials there experts in d.n.a. identification that are going to start going through the remains in a very meticulous process again his remains have been he's been deceased for decades now so they'll be using experts to kind of go through the remains really identify them as best as possible next week there will be a formal ceremony there and then the remains will be sent to hawaii and eventually presumably handed over to any family members that they're able to clearly identify
6:05 am
it will certainly be a very somber process but many family members of some of the people that have never come back are certainly going to be. taking on this process in a very somber somber manner after all these years finally having something to identify their loved ones that died in this war so you know very. thanks very much for joining us from washington. the u.s. government says more than eighteen hundred migrant children have been released from immigration detention centers and more than fourteen hundred of them have been reunited with their parents the government also says around seven hundred children are still separated as they're not eligible for reunification. explains from mccallum in texas. the u.s. government has indicated it will not meet the court imposed deadline to return all children that had been separated from their parents at the border some seven
6:06 am
hundred children have been detained in eligible for reunification and according to government attorneys they fall into groups where parents have red flags in their criminal history or were discharged into the interior of the country and then lost track of by the government or the most concerning in predominant group more than four hundred cases of parents being deported from the country while leaving their child behind the government claims that no one has been deported without the opportunity to ask to bring their child with them but that assertion is being fiercely contested by immigration attorneys who cite client after client that claim they were removed from the country under protest knowing they were being forced to leave their children behind going forward there will be a status hearing on friday where the government will work with the american civil liberties union to come up with a plan of how to reach these four hundred some parents who have been deported asked them if they want their children back and develop
6:07 am
a new plan and how to reunify them. is former deputy assistant attorney general in charge of immigration u.s. department of justice and he explained why the government says it's calmed reunite some children with their families. being the only basis that they used to say that the parent is unfit is that they were committed if they were convicted of a crime and. i mean there's plenty of parents who were convicted of crimes we don't lose custody over their children and it just goes to the nature of the crime then you know whether the person been rehabilitated or not but what the government is trying to say as a proxy is we don't have to trying to do all of that we're not going to reunite involved parents of children where the parent been convicted of her crying we will keep the parent or keep the child in the custody of health and human services and try to find a different guardian or that those children do not have any illegal immigration status but they're not permitted to be deported unless and until their removal
6:08 am
hearing is conduct that but children have special rights or they can apply for something called special immigrant juvenile sabots which is if they've been a band of abuse or neglect that by their parent they can act only a pain a lawful permanent resident status in the united states and so oddly enough if the government creates that that you agent or the government itself the parent who abandoned abuse or neglect to the child the child may end up being able to get a lawful permanent resident green card in the united states even though the parent were reported. pakistani politician emraan khan has declared victory in the general elections promising to build a new pakistan is a still being counted in the official result when they confront until late on friday but rival parties are already questioning the outcome that has more from lahore. supporters of blocking something in softball he celebrated their victory
