that's taking things to a new level from around the world the backdrop of course all of this is a gigantic power vacuum in northern irish politics with no functioning local government for eighteen months. hello i'm maryam namazie this is the news hour live from london coming up in the next sixty minutes zimbabwe's first election without mugabe on the ballot passes off peacefully but opposition leader nelson chamisa expresses concern about huge delays that and polling stations. fresh from making out with ethiopia eritrea as president agrees to mend relations with somalia. four million people are left off

a citizens' list in india's assam state even them in fear of being detained or deported and thousands more flee their homes in northern california as two wildfires combine. and i'm far is small have all the day's sport and clearings former tennis world number one eddie murray returns to action for the first time since pulling out of wimbledon. well voting is wrapped up in zimbabwe's first election in nearly forty years without a former president robert mugabe on the ballot and i see four year old came out to vote though in the capital harare saying he's supporting the opposition candidate nelson chamisa annoyed his former ally amisom and i'm gaga hundreds of thousands of people turned out to make their choice observers say the election was very smooth

in some areas but totally disorganized in others and chamisa says long voting delays reported in urban areas were an effort to undermine his supporters. as well as deciding who should be the next president voters are also electing two hundred ten members of zimbabwe's parliament and nine thousand local councillors twenty three people are running for president but in reality it's a two horse race between the incumbent zanu p.f. amisom and i'm gaga and leader of the opposition movement for democratic change nelson chamisa when i goggled was an ally of robert mugabe for decades until a former president sacked him prompting the coup that so mugabe ousted and the one god were installed in his place now some chamisa is a young lawyer and past who replaced opposition still want morgan chang after his death in february he's proved popular among young people particularly in the city's well malcolm webb has more now from pani district in west in zimbabwe. this polling station has now closed as have others all across the country after twelve hours of

voting on the counting has begun to clear plastic ballot boxes are emptied out and first the ballots are counted in the polling stations before that data is forwarded to the provincial tallying centers opposition say they deployed extra agents to observe this process carefully they've complained of a lack of transparency in the process of some and irregularities but the electoral commission deny that anything untoward is going on meanwhile the chief european union observer said in some parts of the country the voting was very smooth in other parts of the country totally disorganized he said his teams had witnessed queues of young people waiting for up to six hours leaving in frustration when they were told they were in the wrong queue he said he also heard reports of people being passed from one district to another to vote in polling stations where they're not meant to possibly an electoral now practice but he said he didn't know to what extent these things that happened and if they were widespread or significant or not
9:04 pm
that's something that will come out when the e.u. write their reports on this election in the days ahead meanwhile it's going to take a few days before we get the results it won't come out till saturday fourth of august so zimbabweans now are waiting for them to find out who will be announced as the winner of this presidential election. joining me live now is child director and head of politics at u.k. consulting firm various maple croft he's also the author of the land of deception political opportunism and zimbabwe's land air and thank you very much for coming to speak to us so often decades of one man rule robert mugabe is off the scene how critical could this election be to the country's future i think the country is looking with bated breath to see who wins everything is riding on the outcome of the selection of the country will take one of two pathways forward it will either be a variation of zanu p.f. rule or it will be a new start under the m.d.c. but there's a lot to lose was in bob winds of the outcome isn't in their favor the opposition
9:05 pm
are already raising their concerns about delays and problems in voting it to caylee in an area is odd they likely to accept the result if it doesn't go that way i think it really depends on the degree of problems that we're seeing one will inevitably see some calls like this of people saying they haven't been able to cost the votes what's been very slow and one must remember that the some bobby left royal commission operates on a tiny budget and there will inevitably going to be challenges in actually carrying out an election like this but that said it's been a long standing zanu p.f. ploy to gain more votes by throttling back the ability of the opposition members to vote on election day and they draw their opposition opposition draws its votes mostly from open areas how important is the verdict of international election observers in the country what will you be watching for from them the international observers want to bring
9:06 pm
a positive result it's absolutely essential that one of the key off comes from the selection as a legitimate leader naturally no one wants to. dictate that the election is positive that the outcome has been free and fair if it hasn't but it's absolutely essential that the international community is satisfied that whoever. it takes power is the legitimate leader. does the incumbent have an inherent advantage share can we be sure that this playing field has been an absolutely equal one the incumbent has an enormous advantage the incumbent has access to state for sources zanu p.f. controls many much of the election operators zanu p.f. coming into this election is virtually automatically the party that is tipped to win so it means that the opposition has their work cut out if they want to defeat the ruling party not likely to go to what you think i think there's a strong likelihood it will most surveys suggest that this is a neck and neck election i think there's a possibility of
9:07 pm
a swing vote from young voters but it remains to be seen whether the m.d.c. can actually come out on election days in big enough numbers to actually took the vote their way why would why would they have when you say. if it's to tip the election their way why would they have trouble why they had trouble in the past and mobilizing the supporters in the past it's been beans purely because of danish ocean yes the state security services have a fierce reputation in zimbabwe and one must remember that the resources of many voters are a quite meek and they just lack the ability to withstand those kinds of threats and coercion and so historically that's been one of the biggest problems the m.d.c. has had in actually getting people to come out on election day could that change in this election it absolutely will charles larry and thank you very much appreciate your analysis meanwhile south africa's high court has overturned a decision to grant diplomatic immunity to zimbabwe's former first lady grace mugabi she was accused of assaulting

a woman with an electrical cord energy. last year gabi was given immediate immunity by south africa's government following the alleged incident which allowed her to evade prosecution and return to zimbabwe but judges have now quashed that decision saying it was inconsistent with its constitution. well now votes are being counted in mali off days presidential election took place on sunday but the poll was mobbed by insecurity in some areas the government says attacks by gunmen on the violence affected around a fifth of polling stations mohammed vaal has more from the capital bamako. and here. counting ballots by lamplight through the night the voting process went smoothly in the mali capital on sunday a great relief for of oddities after weeks of security concerns results from twenty three thousand polling stations across the country are now in but it will take days to count them all it may be friday before an official result could be announced

president seeking a second five year term he congratulated himself and the people of mali for the relatively calm democratic process. then do believe it's a real pleasure for me to perform the citizen act and it's a start a victory for the people of mali who have voted calmly and serenely this vote will have demonstrated our democratic maturity and our status as a great people that optimistic view is being eco the across the political spectrum in focus your money with ali has to hold a million people have to work so that the country can through the world more game have a more credible government you can we have spent five years in different than you know five years where mali is seen as a country adrift with problems of corruption and government which has led us where we are today and we have to turn to page one hundred twenty nine that is what i hope tonight we came here for peace we came here for mali that's what many voters

contain about seventeen percent of the car fire in northern california the largest and deadliest of ninety five currently burning it's charred an area the size of detroit forcing more than thirty eight thousand people to flee their homes. joins us live now from shasta county california gabriel describe the scene for us there. well you can do see images like this and it pretty much sets the scene of how bad this fire was we're just a small community on the site of one of the main roads here and this used to be an area where some people had homes humble homes up on the side of this hill here and as you can see everything here is absolutely gone and it really gives you an idea of how strong this fire was how fast it came through here you can see this was somebody's s. kitchen that you see right behind me you see the stove off in the distance there
9:19 pm
you see the washer and dryer over here again i mean this was a fire so this is what fires do they burn things but this fire was particularly hot and came in particularly fast because of high winds now the good news is at this fire here northern california officials say they've got it about twenty percent contained so they are making very good headway on it but boy there's still a lot of people that are displaced and this syria were where we are at now is still in amanda terry evacuation zone they're not letting anyone back up in here to try to sift through the remains of their homes because they say it's simply still too dangerous meanwhile say you still probably see a haze there over the over the hill there that is smoke because there's just so many fires burning in this area the sun is out right now it's the middle of the day but you just can't see the sun because there's so much and thick layer of smoke
9:20 pm
that she's keeping everything grey and dark and there's still even a little bit of ash floating in the air as well and we've been speaking about ninety five is that currently burning on their fears about law lives being lost if people are not evacuated to safety quickly. absolutely i mean there are ninety fires in the whole western united states right now but there are just in the state of california seventeen what they're calling major fires and this one here the car fire as they're calling it that's the name of this fire six people lost their lives tragically and as one firefighter told me goes it's a miracle more people did not lose their lives however there is serious concern there's concern about these other fires in california real worry that they are going to be burning very hot very fast and that's why many of the crews that have
9:21 pm
been on this fire as soon as they get it contained they're going to be moving to other parts of the state to start battling the other fires one of the big ones is in central california that's shut down the famous yosemite national park that normally sees four million tourists a year at that park that's a precautionary measure because there are fires around that national park that are threatening it it's the first time since nineteen ninety that yosemite national park has been closed due to fire and just about an hour and a half south of where i'm at a major fire burning there is well it's actually grown in size dramatically just in the last twenty four hours so listen the flames here are gone the people here are going in the coming days come back and try to perhaps rebuild or sift through what they have left of their homes and their lives but elsewhere in this state there are many communities that are directly in the line of where the fires are moving towards right now thank you very much. and shasta county california.

election that is taking place in zimbabwe polls have now closed joining me live from harare is al mar chief observer of the election mission thank you very much for taking the time to speak to us what is your assessment of the election so far. so far we know the election day was quiet and relatively peaceful as a whole campaign compared with this past election that i think it's a progress and that could mean that this election makes a big difference to that what happened before. a big change from the elections in the past in zimbabwe but there has been some concerns about the inconsistency in the way the election has been conducted you are saying that it has been smooth in some places but disorganized in others why is that.
9:26 pm

conference. like the united states italy is currently under enormous strain as a result of illegal immigration and they fought hard and the prime minister frankly is with us today because of illegal immigration italy got tired of it it wanted it longer for the people who really have borne a great part of the burden for europe through the course of the migration crisis i applaud the prime minister for his bold leadership truly bold and i hope world leaders will follow this example including leaders in europe so i don't they when speaking about immigration trade the relationship with russia what might the trouble ministration be seeking from a relationship like this. well he's looking for a friend somewhere in europe because at the moment not everyone is terribly well

positioned as far as the trump administration is concerned and because he sees this almost mind meld with the italians he sees them as a friend particularly in nato and in the g seven it's interesting he was talking about nato and saying that well since i raised the issue of the country should contribute to nato the money has come flooding in well there's two things about that first of all the don't flood money into nato that's not how this works donald trump continues to see this doesn't quite understand how the funding of nato goes ahead and also the in nato you're meant to contribute two percent of your g.d.p. towards a common defense to the defense of your country which is then the need to a standard italy is well below that it's one point three percent so while he's praising the idea of more money coming into nato he doesn't want to criticize the italians directly what was also interesting is well as on the question of immigration particularly in the united states donald trump was asked if he was

since pulling out of wimbledon earlier this month the scot has been handed a wildcard for the tournaments where he will face the american mckenzie mcdonald first stop on monday the thirty one year old hasn't played on hard courts since march last year and has seen his world ranking drop to eight hundred thirty two he had hip surgery in january and says it feels as though he's starting his career all over again. there's a mystery and some see no where i'd want to be ranking wise but. you know the good thing is that when you're up it's off of the game and it's not easy just to move out one spot. like when a couple of months you see you know about three hundred four hundred spots in a week which is which is nice so hopefully over there can get back up there quickly but it sort of feels like i'm kind of starting from scratch again he'll harman is a former tennis correspondent at the times and daily mail he says it's unlikely we'll see murray return to his form. it's very difficult i think for him to be

right back where he was when he won the u.s. open the first u.s. open in two thousand and twelve and then followed it up obviously with two two wimbledon titles and getting to number one in the world as you say eight hundred thirty is a long way from one but and he was quite right and if he does well in these next two or three. months leading up to the u.s. open then he could actually get back to it to a fine level but whether he can actually ever go back to the andy murray of three or four years ago i tend to worry a little bit about that there was there were murmurings wimbledon time as to whether he would he would ever play again let alone be able to compete at the highest level well he's clearly he's playing again as you say he's got a wildcard into washington but it's a long long way back for him to be able to challenge the likes of djokovic in the dollar at the very top of the game well i think whenever you take the very best out of any competition you're going to you're going to struggle in the the supporters won't believe they are seeing the very best in the game that said djokovic is

performance wimbledon i think showed that he is more than three quarters of the way back to the the great joke of it a couple of years ago when he was coached by boris becker was winning grand slams for fun and that all of his he won paris for the eleventh time six weeks ago so he's he's he's right there and that's something final with talk of the wimbledon was it was absolutely two players at their prime federer while he was very close wimbledon again but just came up a little short a merry back as you say if those four can be at the top of their game if they can challenge together and i still think we've got three or four years of great tennis out of potentially out of all of them at the same time the men's game needs new faces and that's what we're looking for next we want to see the new challenges coming through. american john isner has served up his fifth atlanta open title in six years the top seed attempt from behind after fellow american ryan harrison won the first sad is here was able to overcome the hot conditions to maintain his
