6:00 pm
if you find the latin american liberating a prison on al-jazeera. this is al jazeera and live from studio fourteen here at al-jazeera headquarters in doha santa maria welcome to the news groups in argentina the mother of all votes in a staunch catholic country and with the church opposing it senators are about to debate whether abortion should be legal in the first fourteen weeks of pregnancy i think to be. looking at the similar changes across latin america as well also on the grid too close to call in i've hired a special congressional election there is going down to the wire even though the
6:01 pm
republican candidate has already declared victory while in the primaries for november's midterm where she is now on track to become the first muslim woman elected to congress and in california the wildfires get worse two fives have in fact merged now and become the biggest in state history there's even talk they could keep burning for the rest of the smoke. and rain in the heart of the boss of electric car make a tesla tweets about his plans prisoner multibillion dollar company and cause shock waves across the business world we'll have all the details on that story a little bit later to show you some the hash tag aging is friends. with the news grid live on air and streaming online through you tube facebook live an al-jazeera dot com as we go to air at this moment a senate vote in argentina could have massive ramifications on the laws surrounding
6:02 pm
abortion that is a bill that would legalize abortions during the first fourteen weeks of pregnancy it's now being debated and protests for and against are continuing on the streets of buenos aires right now a portion is only legal in cases of rape or risk to the woman's life but if this bill passes and is then signed into law argentina would become the most. populous nation in latin america to legalize abortion this would be a major turnaround wouldn't it in a country and a region where the catholic church and its more conservative views have long dominated so there's been some of the protests we've seen in the past few days and now we're live inside the senate in buenos aires as they begin this debate pretty historic moment there and we've seen it happen in other countries recently other parts of latin america think maybe we've got some pictures from outside the senate as well to see well you can't really say protesters because there are people for and against the bill it certainly a lot of. people out there. to see if we can hear anything from them.
6:03 pm
that's a little bit softer volume there but we're seeing all sorts of people out there protesting for and against this bill which believe there may only be about everything on it tomorrow but certainly the debate starts. today. so we're going to be going and talking about argentina more specifically in a moment but i do also want to broaden things out because across latin america both the catholic church and most major political parties have been against abortion for a long time just have a look at this all of the countries in latin america and the caribbean you've got cuba you're a guy and not mexico but specifically mexico city these are the only places which allow abortion between ten and twelve weeks in those three locations however last year chile legalized abortions the certain circumstances like it is in argentina
6:04 pm
cases of rape when the mother's life is endangered or the fetus is malformed but you've also got brazil as well debating now whether to legalize abortion up to twelve weeks it's been a hearing at the supreme court with more than sixty experts on both sides making the case must forget though that abortion is completely banned in six other countries they are nicaragua honduras el salvador the dominican republic haiti and surinam so that gives you a bit of background we're going to bring in right here at this point to show us i guess how this and this is perfect ground for social media debate for people to put their platforms out there what have you found it's so mixed come all of the conversation is divided as well into two camps there's a problem side which has this green wave movement flooding social media platforms with videos and pictures namely green flags and bandanas worn by women across
6:05 pm
argentina and they're calling for the right to legal safe and free abortion the bandanas are a symbol of the national campaign which started in two thousand and five and we're seeing various hash tags translated to english like let it be lol legal abortion now and save both lives. now seven bills were introduced in congress but for years supporters have just gotten nowhere activists are now pushing really hard to try and raise awareness and the women's march global has said that the vote in favor of legal abortion will signal a change for the region as a whole now other rights groups like amnesty international is sharing the story of nellie she's been processing for you is and won't take no for an answer even the new york times has a special advert to mock the day using the catchphrase it's time to say i feel stew unsafe abortions and then celebrities across latin america have joined in on the campaign sharing their thoughts on instagram. so i want to
6:06 pm
offer sentences in our province to vote in favor of the law for the voluntary interruption of pregnancy so we don't have a single more death in our province inconsistent of who should play for each woman each human lives a different reality which we don't know which makes it easy to judge that's why we can't take away from other women the right to choose that is why i ask you sentences to give us sexual education to be able to decide contraceptives to not have unwanted pregnancies and legal abortion. so no. i am gael garcia bernal i'm a mexican with half my family in argentina i'm no one to decide over someone else's body but i can from anywhere support a law that will lift women's rights for a country with more exploratory in social justice this eighth of august in argentina it will be the mill as a friend brother son father and partner i support all women to guarantee their
6:07 pm
rights. and same i have also come across pictures like these online where men dressed in red cloaks and white bonnets with their heads bowed and this one to symbolize characters from the t.v. adaptation of the nine hundred eighty five novel the handmaid's tale and activists are drawing comparisons to the many women facing restrictive abortion laws around the world and similar protests have taken place in the u.s. and also in our land but anti abortion rights campaigners are also mobilizing their supporters in equal force they're sharing their own pictures and videos and using the color blue along with the hash tag no to abortion and yes to life well interest groups in particular have stepped up their efforts to prevent the bill becoming law and most major political parties in argentina maintain a hard line on this issue and this is what some one line had to say. yes you know you have very. i'm a gynecologist a member of professionals for health and life
6:08 pm
a wednesday august eighth we will be in the congress supporting the completely fuel so of the project to legalize approach and we call on all pregnant women to visit us to receive free medical checks and tests. but let's join our contemporary heroes on the war veterans on yet another night in the region to fight for both life let's not leave them alone let's join them and let's fill the streets with blue flags and blue and then it's. going to. a woman like me eight months pregnant can get an abortion by simply saying she was right sounds hard doesn't it the law literally says i can access an abortion by saying i was raped without proof and doctors will be forced to give me an abortion how do they know if i'm telling the truth without to get your thoughts on the says she said to get in touch with us on any of these thought forms is the hash tag. thank you we're here where one is honorees now here is a latin america editor lucien newman who can say paint a picture for us of what it's like out there the anticipation is low for such
6:09 pm
a historic vote. hello come out i'm here on no one no hi this is well i just for a fair i knew the way the horn you all and as you can see behind me hundreds thousands actually are women and also men who support the abortion laws are gathering here we're expecting hundreds of thousands before this vote is finished and on the other side of the avenue there are the anti abortion law activists as well out in force trying to pressure the congress as they debate one by one which way to go but it looks at this hour come all as though the nos have the majority and that's because i think something like twenty seven out of the thirty's. evan votes needed to thirty six. votes needed to either approve or reject this motion come from the northern conservative part of argentina would
6:10 pm
represent about ten percent of the population but they seem to have enough of the votes to swing this against the abortion legislation people here are therefore not exactly looking very happy they know what's ahead most people are telling us it's not over though if this vote is rejected then in one year's time they can resubmit a new version of it to the lower house and then start all over again from scratch. even if it doesn't go through to see if the fact that we have had this debate in. the fact that chile changed its laurels last year the fact that brazil is having discussions as well what does this tell us about changes in latin america and you know such strongly catholic areas. yes it tells us first of all that the catholic church doesn't have the influence it once had that's very clear a lot of the women who have abortions are catholic they also use contraception they
6:11 pm
also get divorces these sort of dogmas of the catholic church are being ignored more and more in latin america but it also tells us that this is a region as you know famous for its my chiefs more it's a male chauvinism and also from the sides and so little by little and especially with the help of the social networks women have become much more conscious of what is happening to them of their rights and this is being pushed by the younger generation and we're seeing that spread all over this region very much as it started back in the sixty's and seventy's in the united states in europe latin america or latin america women are really playing catch up i would say at this hour fascinating time isn't it listen human america and it's in. q one of the last big votes we saw on abortion was an art and it was admitted leigh a nationwide referendum but still interesting. i look back on. another catholic country which went down this path of even talking about abortion was quite
6:12 pm
a fascinating story in ireland really and if you look up ireland abortion it down to zero dot com you'll find the stories from that as it says in this article momentous that momentous monumental day for women in our land that's at al-jazeera dot com for you and we're looking for your feedback as well on this story and anything else that's coming up on the show contact details coming up for you on screen right now we're going to be talking about the wildfires in canada we are going to be talking a story the wildfires in the california we're going to talking about the spat between canada and saudi arabia is at a.j. english on twitter facebook dot com slash al-jazeera is where you can watch the live stream watch and comment as you go we've been getting great numbers there this week so thank you for joining us and a plus nine seven four five zero one triple one four nine telegram and whatsapp up and running waiting for your contributions now as i mentioned in the past hour saudi arabia's foreign minister has said there is quote nothing to mediate in the kingdom's diplomatic dispute with canada riyadh's frozen new trade and investment it's expelled the canadian ambassador to canada urged saudi arabia to free some
6:13 pm
detained human rights activists this chicken with kristen salumi following developments from toronto a done if there's been any reaction yet from canada itself and then you can take us through what the saudis have been saying. that's right we do expect prime minister justin trudeau to speak later in the day and address this ongoing dispute but the comments coming from the foreign minister ministers show that the saudis have no intention backing down on this they're escalating the conflict and if anything saying that can a made in canada made a mistake and needs to fix it they seem to be addressing reports that the canadians are reaching out to the united arab emirates and england to help mediate in this dispute but the foreign minister saying clearly there is nothing to mediate here they have to fix it they made the mistake they are ramping up pressure in addition to the canceled flights and students being called back thousands of them from
6:14 pm
canada now we know that they're not going to buy any from canada and they're not allowing saudi citizens to receive medical treatment here any more they're being called back but the canadians have been pretty defiant until now standing up for their comments in defense of human rights it's interesting that the foreign minister also mentioned for the first time why these women are being held although not giving much detail at this point saying that they are being interrogating those interrogations are ongoing that the women had attempted to get sensitive information from the government he called it a security issue not a human rights issue but i think for canadians that is not going to pass the smell test. one of the women who has been in prison has family here in canada the family has been a cause celeb for many on the left here and in the country in fact the press the
6:15 pm
prime minister has been under pressure to counsel a very lucrative military contract with the saudis because of saudis human rights records so while the saudis are attempting to use all their economic might against canada canada and the canadian government have press. from their left the liberal left here to actually take an even stronger stance so kind of a standoff at this stage we'll see going forward if. prime minister softened his tone towards the saudis and makes any headway it'll be interesting to see what he has to say i should also point out that while the saudis are withdrawing all of these most experts say that the economic impact is fairly minimal hard to believe when you talk about four billion dollars worth of trade between countries and use that word billion but in the big scheme of things they're the twentieth largest trading partner for canada so some are saying that the
6:16 pm
a cut economic impact is not so great but certainly the words are strong and biting here. from toronto thanks kristen in the united states political allies have been on ohio and a district that's elected republicans to congress for most of the past century but this is twenty eighteen and political norms are just not how we do things anymore in the last direct fight between republicans and democrats before november's midterm elections republican troy bolton is in front and he just join hundred more from ohio. the election wasn't even supposed to be close but after a long election night it was too close to call republican troy balders and held the narrowest of leads over democrat danny o'connor in a special election for ohio's twelfth congressional district i'm going to promise to you but i'm going to work relentlessly really let us play for this well
6:17 pm
congressional district put. america on the right path and we're going to keep it going about well. in this heavily republican district o'connor and his party called it a win of sorts a way with his campaign claiming provisional in absentee ballots could still make the difference it was anything but a concession speech can you believe how close this is. we are in a tight ball game and you made this possible the grass roots individuals who've been knocking on doors fighting for the future of our country. in this sprawling landscape of ohio farmland in suburbs just one democrat has won here since one thousand thirty nine. republican state legislators in ohio redrew this
6:18 pm
district to make it more republican in two thousand and eleven so democrats say even a modest loss is a harbinger of a coming democratic wave in the november midterm elections that should have been a slam dunk for the republicans the fact that it's not is already saying that again . president donald trump won here by eleven percentage points in two thousand and sixteen when polls show democrat danny o'connor in a dead heat with republican troy boulders in this year trump took notice and took to the road troy boulder said he is the guy is the guy that's going to do things so i've got to work outside groups poured millions of dollars into the race most for pro balders and ads but shows that we have a grassroots enthusiasm about our campaign we have folks across our district who are excited my opponent needs washington d.c. to come in and bail him out in a way that we don't democrats need twenty three seats to take over the house of representatives and each side has one more chance to win this district the winner
6:19 pm
only holds office until january now the two candidates return to the campaign trail to face each other again in the november midterm elections john hendren al-jazeera westerville ohio let's go to washington to kimberly how about this one in our washington bureau hi kimberly i mean i think the words of one of the analysts in that report said it's me this should have been a slam dunk for the republicans the fact that the democrats have gotten this close is not bad for them even if they don't end up going right over the top. absolutely the president and republicans trying to characterize this as a strong wind in fact the u.s. president tweeting in just the last hour five for five meaning five victories in the five republican victories rather in the five races where they were hoping that would be the case but as john hendren pointed out his report should have been this difficult to win millions of dollars spent in order to achieve those victories essentially and news all is saying that in the case of the ohio race it's just
6:20 pm
still too close to call even though republicans are claiming victory along with the president i think the republicans are certainly right now looking towards november feeling very nervous well they are trying to argue look at every special election since donald trump one in twenty six thousand we have won nearly all of the special elections but the amount of money the amount of time that has been spent trying to get those victories certainly indicates that it could be difficult for republicans to maintain control of the house of representatives in november and they've also got history working against them as well because historically it has always been the united states when there have been those type of majorities for two consecutive terms that in fact it flips to the other party so certainly republicans try to characterize this as a victory but it certainly is a harbinger of a difficult challenge in november now kelly the other big news. is when the democratic primary in a party stronghold in michigan and as i understand because she's running unopposed
6:21 pm
in the vendor she will now become the first muslim congresswoman i just want to give our viewers a little bit of background quickly daughter of palestinian immigrants she's made it clear she plans to stand up to donald trump like she did two years ago when she was actually removed from a trump rally in detroit i believe among more than ninety muslims mostly democrats who run for public office at various levels this year again for minorities kimberly for muslims for women for muslim or however you want to categorize this is this is . a strong moment for them even if it is a so she's running unopposed. yeah there are couple things we can take away from this the first one is definitely this is inspirational for minorities and even more so for women overall in fact what is important to note in these races that took place on tuesday night in the united states is that there were records broken in terms of the number of women candidates that were successful in these primaries eleven women will now be running for governor in november hundred eighty two women
6:22 pm
at significant when the seats four hundred thirty five in the house of representatives one hundred eighty two will be running for the house of representatives that beats records that were previously thought unattainable in two thousand and sixteen so this is significant but the other thing we're seeing in all of this and in the victory of this candidate who will now become the first muslim house of representatives representative in the u.s. congress is the fact that what we're seeing is the democratic party recognizing some mistakes that were made in two thousand and sixteen we see the party shifting further to the left almost the democratic socialist tradition that was so popularly embraced especially by young people in the party is sort of the vein of bernie sanders we saw this when the election in june with the. primary victory of alexandria cortez in new york now we're seeing this again so this is twofold this is the democratic party recognizing they have to change tact and also a recognition that there needs to be
6:23 pm
a more diverse representation of the united states within the house of representatives the democrats taking that strategy for november always good talking to you can we think you can we hope it's in washington d.c. so just under three months now to the midterms are going to hear a lot about them over that time but alan fischer did this report just a few days ago about the threat of interference big priority given all the fallout there's been over the russian interference in twenty sixteen if you search for u.s. midterm in al-jazeera dot com hit the latest filter at the top and you'll find that report pretty easily. now the president of the democratic republic of congo will not be seeking a third term in office ending months of speculation instead joseph kabila who's been in power for seventeen years having taken over from his father has chosen to back the former interior minister emanuel transonic should marry will be running in december's presidential vote remember the d.l.c. has never had a peaceful transition of power since it gained independence from belgium back in one nine hundred sixty which checking in with katherine so we know who's in
6:24 pm
kinshasa for us hi catherine tell us about emmanuel in the politics of the man with the differ much from. by saying that. rather than the is right now inside the electoral commission he says he could meet his time it is he he arrived about half an hour ago flung by officials of the ruling party with. the huge motorcade drove by behind r t supportive and as you mentioned he is a former interior minister he's also come from the president a home town home province of mine in the is at least the president's mother's home province a lot of people saying that he is a safe bet for the press for the president he is very loyal to the president agrees very much with his ideology and his policies as well and people also saying that
6:25 pm
he's also a safe bet for the military people he's come from yemen as i mentioned in my memory is also the home province of several powerful generals so people saying that he would he will be out of conflict with the military as well he's also a compromise if you may to add a package within the ruling coalition here from the president but he p.p.r. then on the packages while they've been meeting and other parties as well good old constables with him he's also he could also be acceptable to the international easy because he does not he's not in a meat sanctions list but we also come out just does show a statement from the cash the stocks that have been very critical against president joseph kabila and they say this is a huge step and this is a good thing so all these tensions that was what we've been seeing in the democratic republic of congo people very conscious and confronted the president my
6:26 pm
trying to get all these tensions might just be escalating. happen any word on what will happen. so president to be. a divisive tyrant to seventeen years in power it would be hard you'd suspect for him to just cite away all of a sudden. you're absolutely right i don't think it's over for the president like me to talk like i think. the diary really agrees with the policies of the present and i think he's going to carry on he does become president he's going to carry on. and i think the president is going to be right behind them sort of advice thing and really involved in that as well but the president and you mentioned very divisive figure has been and that a lot of pressure has kept the country can't think what such a long time and what he's intentions are and because of that there's been protests in the last two years look several people have been killed because of those
6:27 pm
protests against the president the international community has imposed sanctions of . life so i think that he's stepping down really was a result of all of that pressure and a lot of people also saying come. that i mean it's kind that he step down he's overcome he's welcome he has not really and he should in this country after and saw it in the day and say thanks for the update catherine. and thank you for all your comments and questions coming in. facebook and whatsapp parent we are having a few problems with the live stream on you tube so we're looking to fix that at the moment i've had a great question we're going to investigate this one actually this is come from. whatsapp line someone said what happens to canadians wanting to perform pilgrimage in mecca there is a huge muslim population and that's a very good point given saudi arabia is now putting all these limits on what it does with canada and if we use the gulf crisis as
6:28 pm
a precursor we've seen limitations that were put on carter as well at the time of pilgrimage so we'll actually have a look into that one i think and have a look at that for tomorrow's news grid on the is there any more questions and comments you've got cinnamon twitter at a.j. english facebook live and the what's happening. this is the news great if you with us on facebook i've got a bonus a.j. plus story coming up the you know about a fight for the sun a funeral service in florida that gives you the option of turning your body into a cold great men like the man behind electric space missions. he's been tweeting about buying back all of tesla's public shares to take his business private just what is he up to we're going to talk about that a little later. hello there we've seen lots of thunder and lightning over parts of turkey recently the
6:29 pm
satellite picture is picking up the cloud responsible you can see it over the northern parts there and actually then it works its way eastwards towards the caspian sea so we're seeing lots of thunder and lightning lots of heavy downpours too and some hail as well and that system sticks around as we had three thursday and into friday so expect some more very heavy downpours here on friday where it's also expecting some showers a bit further south so for the northern parts of iran there could be one or two downpours here as well elsewhere there is just fine and hot couple of to around thirty six degrees and for us in baghdad we'll be getting to around forty four now here in doha we've had winds from the northwest over the past few days and so that has ensured it's not been too shimmied the wind the changing now though so on thursday and friday are we drawn in from a more easterly direction and that will drag in more humidity so expect things to be a bit more sticky over the next few days further south you can see a good deal of cloud here over parts of a man into yemen and the southern parts of saudi so obviously more humidity here and it will be a bit sticky and maybe
6:30 pm
a bit of drizzle around the coast as well down towards the southern parts of africa you can see some heavy rain here over parts of eastern south africa and that will gradually pull away eastwards as we head into friday. full of struggle them out i mean on them while they're out at the same theme of me full of pleasure. and. an intimate look at life in cuba today if you don't mind i don't know where to get us a dozen movie again and aslan maskhadov that would have been in. cuba on al-jazeera. when mexico's leaders implemented drastic and controversial energy reforms the country's oil owned by the mexican people for seventy five years was to be sold to private international

headlines for you down to zero dot com and what's trending as well i want to kristie to the news talking a little bit earlier the latest developments in that split between canada and saudi arabia the update on the democratic republic of congo and joseph kabila is that a lot there about the saudi can of the stories of what the background to that special that will what is behind the ground putting it in context head to up to zero dot com head to what's trending have a look at the eyes of. the u.s. where wildfires in california are expected to burn until at least the end of this month more than ten thousand firefighters working to extinguish the flames which have destroyed homes lives and forced evacuations across the state now this is a story map from a street dot com it is a great job of illustrating the scale of the fire emergency you see them all and i should point up yes the brightest spots are over on the coast in california but
6:33 pm
look there's a lot going on as well and in utah or in colorado and in arizona as well and if i just put this filter on over the top hopefully it will work and you'll start to see the levels of smoke that a coming in huge levels of smoke small pollution as well it is a very serious situation we will have more on the prognosis with stiff culture from al jazeera meteorological team shortly first this report is from rob reynolds in los angeles. breaking the record. yet only a few months ago the mendocino complex fire has become the largest wildfire in california history the blaze has devoured more than one thousand seven hundred square kilometers about the size of the entire city of los angeles more than eleven thousand structures are under threat of burning and new evacuations have been ordered in some areas we re firefighters are battling more than twenty active fires
6:34 pm
around the state more than fourteen thousand firefighters have been deployed some travelling from as far as australia and new zealand a european space agency astronaut captured these photos of the fire from the international space station in orbit the deadly spate of wildfires began two weeks ago with the blades in northern california near reading that fast moving conflagration claimed seven lines and is still burning after consuming one thousand homes the latest hot spot flared up in orange county south of los angeles sending up a towering smoke cloud and forcing evacuations from his vacation home on a golf course in new jersey president donald trump weighed in on the fires instead of expressing sympathy he mocked california for unspecified water policies that allowed water to flow into the pacific ocean a policy he called foolish trumps twitter comment puzzled california fire officials
6:35 pm
the state's reservoirs are near historically high levels and officials say lack of water has not been hindering firefighting efforts in any way what does seem clear is that a warming climate is playing a role in fires breaking out sooner growing larger and burning hotter months of exceptionally dry weather combined with high winds and temperatures reaching about forty degrees celsius have created conditions firefighters say they have never before experienced of the five largest fires in california state history for have occurred since just two thousand and twelve rob reynolds al-jazeera los angeles. as promised difficult are with us here to talk through well can you tell me first of all what the next few days weeks are going to look like and if the conditions are going to be at least a little bit favorable recently it's been very windy there and it's the wind that's
6:36 pm
the main thing in spreading wildfires that's what we saw in greece the major problem from that horrific breach fire so in california it's been bad it's looking better over the next few days so the winds aren't to strong so that's the good news and also something that will help us maybe for next year looking ahead el ninos developing in the pacific that's when there's a slight warming you might think the pacific with that but he wouldn't think generally bring the whole stream of moisture towards the west coast of the u.s. including california so that hopefully will mean we have a decent amount of rain between now and next year and that will help to prevent these wild lives ok and the question. i'm always hesitant about asking this but is this climate change or lasers the thing that's really interesting about these fires this particular year is that they really early in the season normally the season to start to september and onwards because you've had the hot summer at that point and then you see the fires when everything's dries a bone but what's happened this year is july had the worst july fire on record that was the reading fire and then after that we've got the the worst firing
6:37 pm
california's history beaching the one that we saw last december but we're really early in the season so something's changing actually in california we have seen changes already in may the california environmental protection agency released a statement saying that the air temperature is is increasing both maximum during the day and the minimum at night both going up we're seeing less snow melt runoff so that less waters around to help us and the sea levels also rising all of these are major indications of climate change what we'd expect to see and so this is another indication that it's taking hold i think while you're talking about the wind of just brought up this wonderful website we use windy so indeed t.v. or windy dot com when you don't call that showing the winds as far as i understand so that's a favorable situation that's right the winds are light we can do with a good deal of rain in order to you know really stop their eyes we're not going to get that but the best we can hope for really at this time of year is some light winds and that will hopefully stop these things from spreading or that much as they
6:38 pm
are ok steve thank you for that let's just bring up some live pictures just where we've got them as well i believe fresno california live pictures coming in from one of our affiliates there just tells a story doesn't that is extraordinary another thing i would say about these fires is it's also the amount of people in the area as well so in reading where they had their horrific fire recently they only had seventeen thousand people living there in the one nine hundred seventy s. but now they've got ninety thousand people living there today so with more people living in the area there will be more accidents that course these fires. signal lost detected but his death. these are images back and steph and the rest of the team can keep you up to date online as well the weather section of al-jazeera dot com gives you the forecast for your part of the world it is forty one degrees and right now at six o'clock at night there's weather related news there's an inside story there somewhere as well i think about europe's heat wave recently have a look for yourself it's in the more menu at al-jazeera dot com and you can follow

of u.s. sanctions comes into effect in november and it's made india nervous and you're imports a large amount of oil from iran but their relationship stretches far beyond the economy as under thomas explains. few of those filling up at this new delhi petrol station have a view on iran's nuclear program nor the merits of the deal to control it but the renewal of u.s. sanctions on iran could be felt here india is the second biggest importer of iranian oil after china eighteen percent of its oil comes from iran. but when prices go up it's the common people like me and others who are affected. india also exports to iran some to see more rice the reimposition of sanctions so far does not come of food nor oil the full extent of what the united states expects of other countries would be you know until november india is hoping exemptions can be made a waiver from the sanctions regime or freedom from consequences if it does continue

to trade with iran but indian exports to the u.s. to twenty five times those to iran it can't afford to risk them the door does and will be taken by the woman it will be in the national interest it is a very very difficult choice we have to strike a balance between who was my legal bike know one of my started you know one of my main business partner india has close ties to iran president has on rouhani came to new delhi in february prime minister narendra modi went to terror on two years ago the country's tiny's our strategic as well as economic sanctions on iran are just a matter of money for india this is about more than the price of petrol rights there is a geo political dimension to the us sanctions regime could fall in. india is the major investor in this port in iran southcoast it gives india access by sea to places which because pakistan blocks the land route it can't reach otherwise you

don is important from the geographical point if you will india looking at afghanistan when you're looking at central asia so we can see how when we talk about the connectivity projects. investment in iran is also politically strategic china's so cooled belts in a road investment initiative gives its influence across central asia if india can rival its people who believe china's influence will grow. little is clear yet u.s. and indian officials will meet in september to discuss what the full u.s. sanctions regime will mean here it could hurt under thomas al jazeera new delhi the israeli parliament has held a special session on a controversial new nation state law nor formally affirms israel's jewish character and makes hebrew the country's so official language a status previously said by arabic was provoked widespread protests stephan deca has more from west jerusalem. the debate happening inside the knesset inside the
6:43 pm
israeli parliament isn't going to change anything to the law today but it highlights the controversy that this law has caused debate going on inside the knesset heated debate we heard from my t.v. he's a palace soon israeli member of knesset saying that this is an apartheid move this is what m.k. said voted for he said that this is a policy that has been inherent over the years when it comes to treating the palestinian citizens of israel and others but it is now ingrained in its lord he said only by standing together jewish people and the arabs would it be able to be overturned it highlights the concern not only from within here from within the citizens of israel also jews who have said that this is a is a threat to what israel says is its democratic and equal basis of the establishment of the state it is also cold prompted a lot of criticism when it comes to the international community and we've also seen tens of thousands of people come to the streets last saturday tens of thousands of citizens of druze also israelis packed would be in square in tel aviv we are
6:44 pm
expecting similar size this saturday in tel aviv called for by israeli citizens palestinian citizens of israel and also many others israelis we've been speaking to say that this is a law that is discriminatory and they do not agree with it. moving to london to come out in doha thank you lauren we'll see lauren again in about fifteen minutes time a full bulletin from london now the financial times is calling this one of the wildest moves in the history of mergers and acquisitions it's come from tesla's chief executive elan musk who says he's considering privatizing the electric company to taking it off the stock market musk says he's secured funding to buy all of the firm's publicly traded stocks at four hundred twenty dollars each that would value the company at eighty two billion dollars he made that announcement on twitter on tuesday interestingly just a few minutes after the financial times reported saudi arabia's sovereign wealth fund had taken a two billion dollars stake in the company. but so too william cohen
6:45 pm
a writer and former mergers and acquisitions investment banker he is joining us from nantucket in massachusetts nice to see you william. as much as any one could get inside the head of someone like a lawn musk and wonder what he's thinking what do you think he's thinking here. she said that this this is a stunner even by iran musk standards because i mean he's basically at the moment he's manipulating his stock price by claiming that he's got a fully financed four hundred dollar four hundred twenty dollars share offer to take the company private he's produced no commitment letters seize obviously got no shareholder vote seize got no filings with the securities and exchange commission this is you know completely the sky at the moment which is frankly against security and change commission rules the stock has gone up eleven percent yesterday after the announcement in his confirmation in
6:46 pm
a sort of email to his employees it's all very vague very loose very evil on musk the sky and unfortunately it's very detrimental to shareholders that invest at this point and may find that this goes nowhere so i'm not sure quite what he's up to here but i don't think i don't think there's enough capital in the world at the moment to take tesla private an eighty billion dollar transaction broadly speaking this is for people who want to be up with you know financial news this doesn't happen very often usually we'd be talking about a company wanting to go public wanting to build and get investments is the prison for this sort of thing on the sort of scale. well look there's this would be i think the largest going private transaction in in history if it were to occur and i think we're very very far away from it occurring that's number one but i mean there are precedents you know michael dell of dell
6:47 pm
computer and took his company private maybe three or four years ago that was about a twenty five billion dollar transaction if i recall now it's talking about going public with everybody making a ton of money especially michael dell in the process if it happens so there is some precedent it's very hard to do again it would require an immense amount of capital don't forget tesla loses money on the operating line it's even as we call it earnings before interest depreciation taxes and amortization he's losing money so i'm not sure who would ever want to buy the debt of this going private transaction unless of course they didn't care about getting a return on their money or ever care about getting their money back and there may be people like that who are willing to you know support musk in this crazy idea of taking this company private but i don't think there are many banks that are fiduciary for shareholders and other creditors who are willing to finance this kind of transaction maybe somewhere in the world and sovereign wealth funds in or in
6:48 pm
china are in asia there are people who are willing to do this kind of a crazy transaction i think that at the moment this is just total pie in the sky well what about the saudis. well the saudis have invested in the equity of of tesla which is fine and now they've got eleven percent higher return on their money than they had you know two days ago but that's very different than wanting to participate in a going private transaction which would load this company up with i don't know fifty five billion of debt sixty billion of debt depending on how much equity would be required to buy this company. that is a very very risky proposition especially for a company that doesn't have any free cash flow and needs a lot of capital to continue to build its business and solve a lot of its operational problems william great talking to you on this very interesting topic william cohen in massachusetts for it's. our people in skeptical

arabia's public investment fund buying stakes in tesla the news itself moved to share prices up five for more than four point five percent and online people have mixed opinions about this some are calling it an oil conspiracy to buy and eliminate environment friendly projects while others are praising the move as a saudi initiative to move towards clean energy well let us know what you think of the story use the hash tag his grid or you can simply message just directly or me after him home and thanks for he must space six companies while planning a tourist trip to the moon this year the online team previewed that news but in this article you also find some detail about the man and his ideas there's a fact box there on moscow on how you plans to establish his space travel you've got a way of space exploration is going in relation to will it have a. must moon or something similar and you'll find that it down to see what dot once again for the facebook live team and on international count day know less about to

learn about the lucky cats in a tokyo temple ten thousand of them attracting instagram is from all over the world and then far as what sport looking at the hysteria being whipped up online ahead of transfer deadline day in the english premier league an annual ritual which might need a little bit of explaining to the outsider. thank . you.
6:52 pm
thank you. thank her. little bits of transfer deadline day. drama drama drama but it's ending soon because in twenty four hours time the transfer window in the english premier league
6:53 pm
will be about to close it's the league's earliest deadline day yet with teams from rival european competitions still able to do business and till the end of the month one potential move has social media users in thrall paul pogba is rumored move from manchester united to barcelona has generated tens of thousands of tweets the midfielder who was part of france's world cup winning team could be on his way to barcelona all majority premier league clubs voted to shut the window early so that all deals would be done before the season starts but not all fans thinks think it's a good idea they've been sounding off on twitter it's so stupid closing the transfer window early for premier league teams to bring in players when other european teams can still take ours you have to close it for incoming and outgoing at the same time otherwise you can't replace what you lose spanish change will be rubbing their hands from a business point of view it's terrible you have to buy before thursday five pm and
6:54 pm
then clubs can come in and lowball from europe knowing you need to sell to cover the early buys it's also the same for lower league teams here's a tweet from luke. a disgruntled ipswich fan realising time is running out i will not be letting my nan out until you sign a second term well joining us now to help us understand what's real and what's fantasy is james robson he's the man united and city correspondent for the manchester evening news first off the premier league window is closing earlier this year who voted to do that and why it. really close notably two teams who didn't go for it were manchester united and manchester city they foresaw these precise problems that all the teams in the premier league probably little cooler side are experiencing right now the theory behind i would say was flawed to begin with the theory behind it was that a lot of clubs didn't want to start the season not knowing who would be in that
6:55 pm
seam and who wouldn't now of course straight away that theory falls down with the fact that they can still lose players because the rest of your can still sign fully under the month so that made no sense whatsoever the only thing that we know is that if someone starts the season playing for one premier league team. they won't be able to move to the premier league team until at least the january transfer window so are you saying at that premier league clubs at a disadvantage usually usually get it made no sense whatsoever that i can understand the time when it was being proposed last last summer i still don't understand it now but seeing it actually in reality as we are right now it just seems crazier and crazier you're in a situation now where a lot of the premier league teams have not done their business yet and they've been handicapped by the run on as well and it's an early start to the premier league season as well which also adds to it and they've got now twenty four hours or so to
6:56 pm
get there to get their business done meanwhile as is the case with barcelona suddenly taking an interest in paul pogba they can still they can still be hanging around for a good few weeks afterwards it makes no sense whatsoever ok and i just want to stay on that topic for a best papad. ne ne and truth to those memories. well what i can tell you is that manchester united absolutely have no intention of selling and i would be amazed if he did go i have been amazed before i would say that but i would be amazed if he did go probably largely because of the transfer window situation as we have it now united are struggling as it is to bring in the players that they plan to bring in a sense of back and iraq when they certainly can't be now looking to bring in a top top top central midfielder so i'd be amazed if they let him go in terms of barcelona's interest that's been longstanding standing that was the case before he came to united i think financial issues than that that summer they couldn't bring
6:57 pm
him and they of course they'd be interested in him as for his relationship with jos a marine you know again this is a story that has been rumbling on for quite a while and josey merinos own assessment of papa's woke up which objective late was was outstanding but marino this is couched a lot of his complements. regarding papa's welker ok almost it sounds like a necessary and hey thank you so much and james robson thank you very much. ok now to another move that's making waves on social media chelsea are on the verge of completing a world record signing they've agreed a fee for athletic bilbao cap of ninety two million dollars which will be the most ever paid for goalkeeper kappa is twenty three and already has one international cap for spain let us know your thoughts you can tweet me directly at under sport it's mt now back to you. thank you so much for that thank you for joining us for the new. twitter facebook and what's up with becky studiously ten fifteen on the
