a century now rains have stopped there but there are no fears of an outbreak of diseases rescue workers are still trying to rescue thousands of people stranded after days of heavy flooding more than one hundred ninety people have lost their lives in just over a week and more than seven hundred thousand are taking shelter in temporary relief camps and to thomas has more from carola. people in kerala describe the highlights of the war and noted centimeters in sheets but in debt relative to that. ankle deep only deep waist deep. some looking kilometers to the nearest dry roads to. my house and then it went up beyond my head. the ground floor was completely covered. the old are evacuated first carried for the books that came for them elsewhere the water is shallow enough for trucks to drive in and. out. and found most people want to stay at

home in houses with second floors they can pass families guard because morning i wake up they're having so much alike that in my heart boys are having walk those lysol for free. where people remain in their homes food water medicine and toiletries are being carried in the car just simply too strong to promote on a boat like that and hope it ok it will get swept away so they started going to holding on to this rope as they walk about about an hour and a half in that direction this is that and walking through fast blowing water with debris. hundreds of thousands of people have left their homes and now in camps statewide an unprecedented relief effort is underway india's military has fifty four helicopters over carola some drop supplies others amounting rescues the weather is improving there was much less rain across carola on sunday than at the
6:04 pm
end of last week but what is already full and it's fast flowing dangerous and everywhere this is an ongoing emergency. and let's bring in andrew he is joining us from kids who are in carolina we saw you in that report it's andrew outdoors with people who are suffering from these floods but you also went to the make said shelter accounts that have been set up what's the situation like there. well it's pretty bad when you can see how many people of that i mean people have got the essential certainly they have walked by have food and they have some bikes it made sense but there are just so many people and at the moment the supplies are holding up but the local politicians here and. i'm not going to hold up hold out much longer i mean the numbers are just so staggering it forty corpses of a million people now living in these temporary camps of them like they were in that report most people are staying in their homes so if you go over on
6:05 pm
a number of people who survived the flood who are affected profoundly by this disaster in the millions so it really is staggering you scale that carol is having to place in terms of this bump is also ok andrew thank you for that update from caroline itself let's now speak to part of interest saying he's joining us from new delhi via skype he's a spokesman for the indian red cross thanks for speaking to us again we spoke a few days ago just give us an update now where the red cross is concentrating its efforts. the red cross volunteers have now been. looting their first to you as you must have heard that oh so kind of let down in the downpour that's been there but i must add that the damned spindle and from it what was that seen in the what the bit that still there but the expectation now is that not many more people will be moved to relief camps including those who are reluctant and stranded
6:06 pm
maybe easier to beach than that about seven hundred thousand people now in the county and state and the the end of the long term planning now for people to be in that can or will be in there already put a weekend now for the weeks to come and we don't really know how the event of it turned out and we are hearing that there is a real concern right now about the threat of outbreaks of diseases especially amongst those that you speak of that are in the relief camps or happen sir and i hear about that and what's being done to prevent show those are the concern definitely is that i mean if anybody who's worked in boston and they happen more frequently than ever now and he welcomes get all crowded and you know you know the situation that it there i think the right if you act now is rescued even maintaining certain they would have said that people in the camps are able to access them and we're making all that available relieve this abuse in which what's happening right from the only feeds of in that what this kind of ground has picked
6:07 pm
up there is a concerted effort by many to do so you know and i think the scale of it is now becoming more and more of an apparent in the disaster that it has. created and but we're in sort of a. risk from right now. in the camps normally when you stay for long long if you do the bang i mean apart from your regular listeners he also pick up induced chances of infection that could develop because of the debris or what the where you were walking you get hurt by that that also says you go back to be borne diseases and so there are. provisions being made like them in every case that we provide also has been doing that then various ideas related think we all agree fairly classically and you know which is which is that is that and i'm sure authorities would be working on it red cross doesn't give medicines per se for a specific reason that's an expertise that we believe other organizations can do better but in terms of prevention hygiene it's. you know most people that blend in
6:08 pm
we just are the things that are needed to keep yourself safe that are there i think for now the focus should be on strengthening the rescue that's on the way so that more and more people can be brought to you proving the conditions in the count that is there and we have raised a national or be able funding and a lot of support is coming into that that will allow us to build after the long you know that's very important to learn that falling short right now. i think you need to see the response that is coming intellect of you the magnitude of the disaster has been phenomenal so we do need more resources for sure but a lot of promising kind of commitments have come in and out of material and you know. technical support alpha's have come in so that there is a good trend there in terms of allowing us to look at that better but i think there's a lot more we didn't get a lot of. all right so we thank you very much for giving us the update from new
6:09 pm
delhi thank you so much now qatar's government has pledged five million dollars in assistance for carolyn's flood victims the emir shift i mean been hundred thousand the an ounce the aid package saying that he acknowledged the special bond with india and the contribution the people of carola have made to qatar the state charity organization has also launched a campaign to raise funds so experts are saying that the amount of rain that has fallen is unexpectedly high this year for a look at just how much that is you can head to al jazeera dot com where you'll find this article and if you scroll all the way down you'll get to this graph right there now i am getting comments on our facebook a feed from karen office on saying it seems that disaster management teams were not well prepared and angela saying these floods are one of the effects of climate change as well as global warming so if you have any comments or questions on this

6:11 pm
us on the ramp at the on the situation in colombia he's joining us live from the capital of bogota so have the measures that the colombian government put in place discouraged venezuelans trying to get into the country. well there it is very difficult to imagine that demanding passport through the mind groundswell stop them from fleeing their country they're leaving out of necessity and most likely they will continue to do so whatever these countries like and whether whatever measures the countries such as ek whether or peru might try to put in place but it's clear that the the challenges are very high for all the nice well as neighboring countries we've seen the number of these migrants going up steadily for the last two years and truly these new measures whether they will most likely
6:12 pm
just create new problems on these at these border crossing we've seeing that already at the border crossing with ecuador there are two hundred three hundred venezuelans that are now sleeping there there this is a very it's a crossing very high in the andes freezing temperatures these people are desperate they arrived there after already what has been a very strenuous trip through colombia so what we're seeing is just that the crisis is becoming more and more difficult for all of these countries to deal with especially now for colombia effect whether that meant this these passports because most of these migrants don't have a passport it's very difficult for them to get one in venice well it's very difficult to find the paper to print these passports on and they're very expensive for many of these venezuelans and we talk to them in the past while reporting this
6:13 pm
crisis for example on the border in the border town of. more than a year to save enough money to get one of these passports so this must be causing that a lot of tension between all the neighboring countries there on the center. definitely definitely now there has been this major incident on saturday in the border town of writing my in-breath deal where a group of locals attacked the migrant camps. after allegedly a shop owner there was robbed and then beaten up by migrants reportedly many of these migrants are through the back into venezuela while locals burned their belongings and so this has been a major incident but just one of many that we've been hearing of course many of
6:14 pm
these countries are healing liquid to receive such a high number of migrants especially in such a short time span in colombia for example almost a million venezuelans arrived in the last two years these are countries that already have high level of poverty so it's very difficult for them to integrate these new people in this crisis seems that we don't see an end to it any time soon ok other sounds are giving us the update from bogota thank you let's now speak to paul dobson in venezuela itself is joining us via skype is a journalist venezuela analysis dot com thanks for speaking to us so maduro has announced a series of economic measures that he's going to take he said this i want the country to recover and i have the formula one of which he says he will hike the minimum wage by three thousand percent and he's also introducing a crypto currency how is this all going to help the economic situation in the
6:15 pm
ordinary venezuelans. well the. the idea behind these measures taken by president or which come alongside a monetary conversion of the paper currency inverness wainer as well and a series of other issues tax reforms and a change in the way that a government when i set subsidy subsidies and the idea behind of these is to start reducing the subsidies in a generalized form on target subsidies to those who actually need them and also to try to address the problems of hyper hyper inflation in the country which is currently estimated at around thirty four thousand percent a year which is eaten away at wages public private sector wages quite considerably in the last six months to a year so these measures taken by the government look to firstly out to some extent the printing of money paper money and to promote the more digital form of
6:16 pm
transactions and also to try to to reinstate the consumer power of venezuelans by linking the minimum wage to the price of petrol the price of oil which is kind of here on sixty dollars to a barrel and to people in venezuela feel like this is the right step to take by the governments. there's a huge amount of expectation at the moment both from the pro government and the anti government sectors for a long time the venezuelans have been calling on the government to make more drastic or far further reaching measures in the economic sphere finally we've seen some quite drastic measures taken by the government so at the moment that's a lot of hope that it would have some sort of positive effect on especially prices on hyperinflation but also on short that is on importing all currency controls which would be in which have been destroyed over the last week the lure of currency control which we fixed the venezuelan born of out of the u.s. dollar has been defeated so now that looks like you have any floating currency
6:17 pm
introduced based on the petro cyber currency so there's a lot of expectation on the streets only time will tell how effective these policies are all right so we thank you for giving us the update from venezuela while the team at the big picture documents the full story behind the most pressing issues off our times and the latest episode is on the battle for venezuela examining how the exploitation of oil created modern venezuela and how the oil industry also helped create a divided society as well as an demick inequality you can head to al jazeera dot com click on shows in the big picture to watch this episodes. well pro and anti-government protesters in nicaragua took out rival rallies in the capital managua on saturday as the country continues to struggle with political violence that's killed hundreds of people supporters of president daniel ortega have called for peace and accuse the opposition activists of being part of
6:18 pm
a foreign backed coup antigovernment protesters demanded ortega's resignation they called for the release of political prisoners and many nicaraguans are fleeing their country because of the ongoing violence there but the atmosphere across the border in costa rica is an entirely welcoming and you're following that story thanks well let me show you lemaire said park it's in the coast region capital san jose now it's a known gathering spot for nicaraguans who live in a nearby neighborhood well on saturday lemaire said looks more like this as hundreds of coast to reconsider gathered in the park to sing the national anthem and raise the coast region flag but a little while later it turned nasty as they started shouting xenophobic slogans telling rugland to get out of their country. the police then arrived to break at the scene after it got violent and they're also accused of beating up some of the protesters security officials say about thirty nicaraguans were injured in around forty four people were arrested. now san jose police chief said that the gathering
6:19 pm
had been organized online and spread to several other parks in the area and he shared an image of some of the items that were confiscated you can see molotov cocktails knives and baseball bats in the nicaraguan bishop silvio jose baez tweeted that he's sorry that this event fuel or the event was fueled by zena phobia but he sure that the presidents and the people of coast rica will not fail to show their nobility and fraternal spirit towards our people a lot of coaster eakins are calling for the same. that was out of the i mean what is happening to some nicaraguans in costa rica right now is a really ugly problem and i hope the authorities can control it quickly before the situation gets worse because it's already a tough one. on average two hundred to apply for asylum and coast rica every day and more than eight thousand refugee claims have been registered since april the
6:20 pm
backlog is double that and the un's refugee agency says the national immigration facilities in the country have been overwhelmed with the number of applications now as the nicaraguan population of costa rica continues to grow the government is trying to control the situation and the president tweeted out this image showing a meeting in the presidential house to discuss some of the next steps after that violence that you saw just a short while ago and then the security minister michael sotto told reporters that police will permanently be posted in la mer said park to maintain peace he also denounced the violence saying quote we are a country of laws we can express ourselves but that does not mean that other people should be assaulted costa ricans are not like this group of protesters we are characterized for being peaceful so if you're in khost rica we want to hear your perspective on this story you can share your thoughts with us on twitter using the hash tag news grid or message me directly i'm andrew ship well we recently sat down

maybe in seven or four years but none of them understand what this really is also you know one important thing about the evil the fees for the muslim calendar is that people sacrifice some animals. to share the meat with their neighbors family members and relatives and these people have no money they don't they don't have the chance to perform this religious duty and share with their beloved only other hand i asked them how often they can't eat meat they said they don't receive any meat here so even the nutrition is so bad and the camp is so overcrowded especially after the latest attacks and other areas many more people came here so the whole area there are many sub camps in this area the whole population is at least eight hundred fifty thousand people and it is just by the turkish border

changer has been following those developments from the bona and cell phone a province. a consumer association report which was published just two days after the general of bridge collapse says that there are twenty two bridges on the italian network that need serious maintenance work because they're showing signs of structural damage now i'm under one of those bridges that was mentioned in that report now just to take a look up underneath this span and you can see what's happening there is a series of water leaks coming through corroding the metal and what they've done here is they've stayed pulled a piece of wood between two of the cracks to try and hold it together that seems extraordinary that doesn't seem to be the sort of maintenance we need on this motorway which is on the main drag between genoa and children so it does appear this bridge is only twenty years old it does appear that there is a serious problem with the quality of cement that's being used and it's not only

here in italy that there are problems but the french government have just published an audit they commissioned on the state of french bridges and motorways and they say that there are eight hundred forty bridges in france that are showing serious signs of still of structural deterioration and might indeed in the end collapse much like the whole genoa tragedy so this seems to be a problem that is throughout both italy and france and needs serious attention. the afghan government and the taliban have made overtures of peace a president has announced a three month ceasefire with the taliban but with conditions and the taliban have responded by promising to free hundreds of prisoners on the occasion of the islamic religious festival. well this comes as afghanistan celebrates the ninety ninth anniversary of its independence the celebrations marked the one nine hundred twenty

austria currently holds the rotating presidency off the you. now iran's foreign minister has lashed out at the creation of an iran action group intended to coordinate the trump and ministrations policies one of the big issues has to do with the timing of that announcement and andrew is here to explain what that is thanks to remain well sixty five years ago today an american led military group toppled iran's first democratically elected government led by prime minister mohammad mosaddegh the man you see here now it's mark the anniversary iran's foreign minister zarif tweeted this photo of massada can also said that this action restored dictatorship in iran and subjugated iranians for the next twenty five years now in this american action group dreams of doing the same thing through pressure misinformation and demagoguery for minister finishes his tweet by saying never again so this is a key moment in history and it influences so much of what we see today masonic

stood up to the anglo iranian oil company which later became known as british petroleum or b.p. and what he did was nationalize the oil industry because iran was getting so little in terms of oil revenues now that might have earned him the cover of time magazine as man of the year the year before but this is what happened next. the years nine hundred fifty three. this is the democratically elected prime minister of iran dr mohammad mosaddegh who wanted to use iranian resources for the benefit of the iranian people which the british didn't approve of. travel abroad one push on decided to nationalize how rich oil fields developed by forty years of british and a pride and the british oil man left question they'd be back the brits tried convincing the us to overthrow mossad take several times that the us had good relations with the prime minister and wanted the two to reach an agreement but with time passing and no solution reached the us started to worry that the soviets would take advantage so operation ajax. the cia spread propaganda

through humbles and the press and bought allies and the military clergy and parliament paid off mobster protests in the streets and found a willing general to mobilize the army assad was removed in a coup and the pro western monarchy. was reinstated. and of course after that the u.s. backed the shah was toppled in the one nine hundred seventy nine revolution and hostility towards united states since then has been a cornerstone of iranian foreign policy and so the timing of this announcement has certainly been noticed as the administration just the other day announced the formation of what it's calling an iran action group it has the goal of driving administration policy in washington and overseas to change iran's behavior this is what the u.s. secretary of state had to say president represents a tutor a good bit of pressure deterrence and solidarity with the long suffering iranian people our hope is that one day soon we can reach

a new agreement with iran but we must see major changes in the regimes behavior both inside and outside of its borders the way people in the world are demanding that iran finally act like a normal nation. and the iranian speaker of parliament ali larijani had a response to that he said how dare you talk about the freedom of the iranian nation with your dark record of the august nineteenth coup and the appointment of a puppet totalitarian regime americans are imposing sanctions but they claim they are supporting freedom human rights and global and regional security well the u.s. state department says the timing of this announcement on the anniversary of that who is pure coincidence but commentators certainly have noticed like parsley here who says that it's at least a has a wicked sense of irony whether or not it was done on purpose one last comment from levi is here he says the main lesson of nine hundred fifty three is that even if the u.s. manages to change the iranian regime it can't necessarily manage what comes next so
