this news conference what did you make of it. well essentially as far as the u.s. president is concerned domestic political concerns will always drag a u.s. president back to earth as it were there's a truism that typically if a person is elected to a second term he will usually spend most of his energy on foreign policy so that he doesn't have to deal with the very real potentially damaging issues that crop up here in the united states and of course right now he even though donald trump is in his first term he's dealing with a very difficult situation that of trying to get brett kavanaugh an appellate george judge excuse me on to the u.s. supreme court third woman has accused kavanagh of engaging in sexually abusive practices when they were teenagers in the washington d.c. area back in the one nine hundred eighty s. what is significant about the president's comments is that even though he once

again attacked the accuser's lawyer michael of a nominee for a essentially acting as a water carrier for democratic politicians who are opposed to cavanaugh's nomination he then revealed that head of an important testimony on thursday by the first woman to accuse cavanagh of trying to sexually attack her that he was going to listen to this person's testimony to the testimony of christine blazin forward that he would keep an open mind and that if she made a persuasive enough case he could be persuaded to perhaps withdraw his support for brett kavanaugh nomination that's the first time we have heard any such wavering in the president's support for brett kavanaugh even though throughout the past hour of this press conference he has said many times that he believes that cavanagh is

a third woman julie sweetening who says she was raped at a house party in the one nine hundred eighty s. and cavanagh and a friend mark judge were there to get more now from rosalind jordan live in washington d.c. you know we've heard a lot from the u.s. president in the past hour and at times he seemed to be running out of patience because really is at a very busy day at the u.n. but truly most questions just focused on this issue. well that's because domestic politics are much more the focus of the us media than foreign policy and certainly when you have a supreme court nominee whose character has been questioned for a week and a half that's going to be the thing they're going to raise questions about and what you saw happening during that press conference where reporters almost to a person sticking to the same topic and not letting the president try to wriggle out of any any answers and only after the fourth person stood up and started asking

questions that's when we heard this news that the president is for the first time willing to consider pulling his support for brett kavanaugh withdrawing the nomination of kavanagh to join the u.s. supreme court which if it were to happen would be a very significant political loss for the u.s. president and of course this comes in the context of the fact that the president himself has been accused of sexual improprieties before he became president and in fact has been targeted in several lawsuits because of those allegations and so what you have been seeing in the past hour has been for the most part a defense of brett kavanaugh his character of his record of his family but also this very plainspoken revelation that he wants to see what christine blogs the ford the first woman to accuse kavanaugh of sexual impropriety he wants to see what laws

he ford has to say on thursday before the senate judiciary committee and then he said that if in a strong case can be made he would be willing to change his mind and to change course on the cabin on nomination that is certainly the issue that is going to be dominating the conversation in washington and in the national newspapers not other key issues such as the ongoing efforts to get north korea to give up its nuclear weapons program or the ongoing trade war not just with china but also with mexico and with canada. yeah and of course as we can see on the screen there roles the news conference is continuing it mean you mentioned he said there was a chance you know he said he was going to listen to the testimony and then make up his mind but assuming that he's not going to withdraw the nomination how likely is it that kavanah nomination will actually go through and he'll become a supreme court judge. it's really anyone's guess at this point barbara i mean you

have you know a third person who is willing to sign an affidavit and to send it to the senate judiciary committee which is now investigating these charges at least one news organization is reporting that the investigators were trying to interview judge kavanagh on wednesday about these latest allegations which involve gang rape among other things and you have also you know a growing a number of people telling pollsters that they are not in support of cavanagh joining the highest court it's also becoming a very contentious a political law element as it were with the country is a little more than five weeks away from important congressional elections and the fallout from this nomination could change the way that people end up voting in early november so there are a lot of issues that are at stake but clearly perhaps one of the most important things at risk at least for donald trump is his prestige is his reputation he made

a promise that he would nominate very conservative judges to become supreme court justices this would be his second such justice if brett kavanaugh is confirmed but really as of right now it's really anyone's guess what happens assuming that we do get to thursday's hearing where we hear from christine glossy forward who will read tell her story and then we hear from brett kavanaugh who'll give his version he's already denied the allegations but we will see this all happening before the television cameras before the senators of the judiciary committee. jordan with the latest there from washington d.c. things moving very quickly for the moment thank you. well earlier u.s. president donald trump chaired his first meeting at the u.n. security council that's because the u.s.
