common this visit is so important because we can only resolve our differences if we communicate if we don't communicate we cannot find common ground sometimes it takes a while but i am in favor of such discussions that is why i'm happy president adam one is here to get. expressed to the esteemed show so the turkish economy is built on strong foundations we have taken structural steps to respond to to speculation challenges in the economy we are prepared for any difficulties in our economy just as we are prepared to meet any other challenges in any other respects we feel that the relations between germany and turkey are very important and we want to advance a win win scenario john hall has the latest from berlin. well first and foremost of course this was a state visit by president at the invitation of president frankel to spawn one won

the election back in june but also it was i think quite a difficult meeting between the two leaders who perhaps realized that their countries have more of importance between them than the things which they disagree about but found it quite difficult in their press conference chancellor merkel and president to put to one side or hide their disagreements and so you had chancellor merkel saying that they had a common street. egypt desire for a good relationship but pointing out that in terms of a free open and democratic society the two countries have different perceptions of what that looked like president responded by saying he was looking for a win win relationship between turkey and syria two countries he said that had to respect one another the clear implication we will work together but don't lecture us on democracy on human rights on the judiciary so issues of common importance that both countries wanted to see dealt with they made an announcement on syria they'll be meeting next month bringing in france and russia to help deal with the

situation in syria there is of course the ongoing migration and refugee crisis turkey holding up the floodgates to three and a half million syrian refugees desperate to make it to europe germany very keen to reinforce them deal there's an economic crisis going on it turkey's worst in fifteen years germany its biggest trade partner its banks and businesses deeply exposed and of course no one likes the prospect of two nato members turkey in the united states at loggerheads perhaps germany can help solve that little problem along the way so clearly not the easiest of meetings this an exercise in political expediency to countries that recognize they do have problems but they can perhaps try and solve together sinan organization former turkish diplomat who now serves as a visiting scholar at the think tank carnegie europe he says state visit to germany is a great example of political pragmatism. the fact that these talks are being held at

this level with the state visit by the turkish president is in itself a sign that there is willingness both unburden in ankara sure start a constructive powerful being engaged with it does not necessarily mean that some of the areas of disagreement have been settled far from that as we saw this morning but nonetheless it's a sign that they are ready to talk to each other in a frank amende there at the highest levels of political leadership on both sides there are benefits to be had on the german side. wants to ensure that turkey continues to comply with its commitments under the refugee deal whereas onkar wants to open tain germany support in advance of an expected period of economy hardship so it's important for the turkish government to get germany's backing if

year in the u.s. some democrats have walked out of the senate judiciary committee's final debate over brett kavanaugh his confirmation to the supreme court lawmakers have been reviewing thursday's testimony from kavanagh and one of the women who accused him of sexual misconduct so let's look at what could lie ahead for kavanaugh starting with the senate judiciary committee vote which will happen at seventeen thirty g.m.t. that's in two hours time republicans hold a slim eleven to ten majority on that committee one republican who was having reservations has now said he will vote in favor a procedural vote will then be held on saturday before a final vote happens early next week republicans need at least fifty votes for cavanaugh's confirmation to proceed they hold fifty one seats but at least four of their senators are undecided in the event of a tie vice president mike pence would have the casting vote meaning kavanagh would advance to the supreme court let's speak to dr bart ross. political psychologist
12:22 am
joining us from naples in florida thanks for speaking to us on al jazeera if we just look at the mechanics over what could happen today in about two hours time. the senate judiciary committee will be voting on whether to send brett kavanaugh supreme court nomination to the full senate what do you think will happen well first off nice to be with you and what i think might happen is that he could get he get could get approved he could get confirmed however there are two senators two female senators lisa murkowski from alaska and susan collins from maine who are pro-choice they are pro women's rights and they are now in a very interesting situation because both of them really do not need the republican party so they can be very independent and that would cost cavanaugh the the
12:23 am
confirmation so i would look at them very carefully if this goes forward but from my point of view here i think that they should go for an f.b.i. investigation to take a look at these allegations that's what president bush did many years ago president george bush forty one and that's what the american bar association is saying now let's look at these allegations and let's investigate but this seems to be an attempt to ram this through yeah and on that issue of the f.b.i. there seems to be division on whether there should be an f.b.i. investigation or not going forward but what we saw happen just a short time ago is that there was a motion that was put forward on whether marc a judge should be brought in as a potential key witness that was defeated what do you make of that. well again i think that this is really a push to get this person confirmed no matter what because really if you take a look at this and that's beyond the investigation might actually help kavanaugh if
12:24 am
there's no real corroborative evidence and it's hard to get that kind of evidence but the senate on the republican side doesn't want to take a chance they want this guy on they're going to push forward and i think the optics are very bad for the republican party this is as psychologists say a conflict situation that's a lose lose conflict because if he is confirmed it's going to be an outrage and if he if he goes forward without an f.b.i. investigation that's even worse so there's no win here i think for the republican party except to get their man on the court could this all impact the november congressional elections no matter which way the vote goes today what sort of impact will it have on the elections. well that's a great question because i think that no matter which way it goes it energizes the democratic base all the groups all the women's groups all of the activists in this
12:25 am
country are going to be outraged and cavanaugh is really not a very attractive candidate to most people his polling is not that good so i really think that what's going to happen here is that it's going to energize the democratic base and i think the republicans may get their man but they're going to probably have a very very difficult time in november in the election all right dr bart ross a great to speak with you thanks for speaking to us on al-jazeera. the united nations human rights council has voted to extend an inquiry into crimes in yemen the approval overrides objections from saudi arabia and yemen's government who were recently criticized by the council investigating alleged rights violations as bernard smith reports it comes as the un envoy to yemen pushes for a new talks between the warring parties and says the country's main airport outside could reopen soon. five times over the past few years these families have been
12:26 am
forced to travel hundreds of kilometers across the deserts of northern yemen to escape the fighting like another twenty two million people in this country they need humanitarian assistance out of that and we're stuck between the rain in the sun and we others before us we have nothing and until now no organization has given us anything. with almost the entire population on its knees the un is pushing again to get the warring parties to talks it's going to be within weeks i don't think we can allow it to be delayed until kind of over the horizon because the problem with that is and i've been reassured this week between people here in new york that people lose the narrative of peace and once you lose the opportunity to talk about a settlement the narrative of war becomes dominance and that's what we must try to get away from for now war still dominates the narrative these are recent strikes by the saudi u.a.e. led coalition on what it says are who the fight is in her data province near

a crucial port. the conflict began with a twenty fourteen takeover of the capital sanaa by the booth is an iranian backed group that toppled the internationally recognized government saudi u.a.e. coalition joined in to support the government for the past year it's imposed an almost total and see blockade the un is trying again to loosen those restrictions i want to make an announcement about the opening of sana airport if i can finalize that i want to make announcements about how we can get prisoners released both sides we made a lot of progress since geneva reopening the airport will allow thousands of people to get medical treatment overseas and increase the flow of aid coming in talks between the who sees and the yemeni government was supposed to start three weeks ago but the yemenis never turned up the u.n. special envoy says he's convinced the who things are ready to meet but even if they go see asians do get going. says he doesn't expect to get

a cease fire head of them so for now there's no letup in sight strikes and fighting . bernard smith al-jazeera djibouti well yemen and other conflicts around the world habit and focus at the u.n. general assembly and our diplomatic editor james bass is joining us from the u.n. headquarters in new york to discuss that james durian we've had world leaders here in new york it's friday they've been here all week we've heard all the talking all the speeches but what actually has been achieved particularly on key issues like syria and yemen moments ago walking past me here was the u.n. special envoy for syria stefan de mistura who's trying to build a constitutional committee to try and build eventually some sort of peace deal for syria asked him how he how it was going he said it's very very hard work let's get more details on on some of the issues that we go on behind the scenes joining me
12:29 am
now is the president of the international committee of the red cross peter mara thank you very much for joining us here on out zero everyone is talking what is actually getting done on the key issues and let's turn to probably the most urgent one which is yemen how bad is eat. well the situation in yemen is in fact a very dire situation and what the opportunity this week is that you'll bring a lot of factors together and you can eventually shape at least some minimal consensus on what has to be done in the days and weeks to come i think there is an emerging consensus that more imports have to go into yemen they're more humanitarians have to be able to operate on the ground there is a sense that needs painstaking negotiations on the ground as well between the very fragmented armed groups and i think you can drum up and rally some of the political
12:30 am
influencers or are behind those armed groups on the ground and that's basically what we also try to do with some of the u.n. agencies we had a situation where those seemed to be an imminent offensive on the data and then we had the effort at talks in geneva which never really started because the hutus didn't make it to geneva there is now a feeling that perhaps that offensive might be back on on who date or what would that mean from a humanitarian point of view well we certainly hope that the military calculation will be the same as the humanitarian calculations that such an offensive. really would represent a major humanitarian challenge for a lot of people and that we certainly hope that the military plan those would still back off of such an offense if we have taken that position for quite some time the
12:31 am
u.n. obviously have some resources there you are the largest humanitarian player after them could you cope if there was an offensive on who data in terms of the immediate effects of population being displaced and the effects of there being potentially a famine. well of course you would never can cope with such emergencies look at the present situation without enough and see if we have difficulties coping with the situation where the humanitarian situation in yemen this is particularly dire in terms of import regime which is difficult to bring the necessary things into yemen it's difficult to distribute because of the security situation of the fragmented situation we just can't cope on top of it with a major additional disaster which an offensive on how data was ripped what represent and therefore i think it is important to give diplomatic efforts a chance and to bring the parties to the table talk reate the conditions under
12:32 am
which we can do the minimal humanitarian work which which is necessary in the present conditions given the enormity of the situation in yemen it is quite amazing really visible tenuously there is another calamity going on on going now longer than the second world war the situation in syria the dangers the flashpoint in yemen the flashpoint in syria you have a deal there between the turks and the russians but there's still talk about trying to remove various groups from midlevel you still worried about the situation and we are definitely worried about the situation because it's one of those context where we see an intrinsic weighing from civilians into militaries and militaries into the civilian population and this is a very difficult context in which to act i.c.r.c. itself at the present moment has no access into into a this is
12:33 am
a situation which is basically supported by and by turkey and by imports from turkey and out of the province itself so most likely this is a very dire situation but we haven't even measured yet the full extent of your many terror. an aspect while the military and political aspect obviously very difficult everybody here this week is waiting for to see whether the steel will materialize in de confliction on the ground and eventually in creation of for humanitarian space in which we can operate. president of the i.c.r.c. thank you for joining us on al-jazeera and it's worth telling you that on both those issues we may get some interesting comments because on among the speeches to come in the next few hours we have the saudi foreign minister a key member of the coalition involved in yemen if there's an offensive in who data
12:34 am
saudi arabia will be involved and of course with regards to the situation in syria that deal on it was done by russia and turkey we're going to hear from the russian foreign minister sergei lavrov soon as well all right james bay is thank you india's supreme court has lifted a ban on girls and women of childbearing age entering a historic temple in the southern state of carola the court ruled that excluding women can't be seen as an essential religious practice females aged from ten to fifty had been barred from entering the sub or ramallah temple as some hindu religious figure is considered menstruation to be impure. well this is the latest in a number of socially progressive rulings in india this month on thursday the court unanimously struck down a hundred fifty eight year old law that treated old old adultery in certain cases as a criminal offense and on the ninth of september it decriminalized gay sex overturning and other law framed in the nineteenth century by british colonialists late august

u.s. but that is the chinese way you have to somewhat read into their comments and for a chinese speaker at something like this i think the comments from the state councilor and foreign minister wang ye were pretty strong talking about countries that might blackmail china and china would not agree to that saying that trade was not a zero sum game of course he didn't respond to the most explosive allegation that we had on choose day from president trump who talked about how unfair china was being on trade and then added that he believed that china was trying to undermine the forthcoming mid-term elections that are taking place in the united states in november president trump was asked further about that as a news conference and didn't give any more details whatsoever and it's worth saying that for now that claim comes just from the president it hasn't been backed up by

the u.s. intelligence community remember when there was hacking in the election in two hundred sixteen in the presidential election and that was going to be done by russia it was that that allegation came from all the us intelligence agencies we haven't had anything similar on this allegation and speaking of russia we expect the foreign minister to take to the podium soon what do we expect there. yes sir will be speaking to the general assembly representing russia because vladimir putin only comes here to new york once every five years i think watch closely for what he says on some of the key issues in the middle east look for example of what he says about the israel palestine conflict but most importantly perhaps syria and that agreement between turkey and russia. there's a key bit of that agreement that no one quite understands which is that the fight as we used to call them who are there in need are supposed to leave how is that

going to happen that's not at all clear will we get any more details and then of course the other contentious thing that happened at the beginning of this week was russia saying that it was going to give a new s. three hundred missile system a much more sophisticated system to assad's government in damascus that is caused real concern i think from the u.s. from turkey from israel we may hear more from mr lavrov in his speech if we don't straight afterwards he's going to the news conference room here in the u.n. and i'm sure us reporters will try and ask about it all right thank you well still in new york the foreign minister of qatar has met with his counterparts from the four nations blockading his country on the sidelines of the general assembly this is the first time such a meeting has been held since the u.a.e. and saudi arabia egypt and bahrain all diplomatic and economic ties with in june last year the meeting was arranged and attended by the u.s.

secretary of state might pump a zero. has more. the u.s. is scrambling to put together a regional alliance to contain what it sees as a growing iranian influence in the region if you listen to the recent statements made by president trump his national security adviser john bolton and secretary state mike pompei of the basically accusing iran of being the world's leading sponsor of terrorism and they're saying that the iran must stop its activities it must stop interfering into the affairs of. countries in the region however the key u.s. allies in the region remain divided embroiled in the worst diplomatic crisis the g.c.c. has ever seen the start of foreign minister days ago made some stating blue marks about qatar cues in qatar of the sponsoring extremism and saying that saudi arabia is willing to wait for as long as it takes twelve fifteen fifty years unless qatar meets all the demands that were made by the blockade in countries saudi arabia

have more of importance between them than the things which they disagree about but found it quite difficult in their press conference chancellor merkel and president the one to put to one side or hide their disagreements and so you had chancellor merkel saying that they had a common strategic desire for a good relationship but pointing out that in terms of a free open and democratic society the two countries had different perceptions of what that looked like president responded by saying he was looking for a win win relationship between turkey and syria two countries he said that had to respect one another the clear implication we will work together but don't lecture us on the democracy on human rights on the judiciary so issues of common importance both countries wanted to see dealt with they made an announcement on syria they'll be meeting next month bringing in france and russia to help deal with the situation
