to discuss trade and ending existing market barriers and pointed remarks possibly aimed at the u.s. when he warned against protectionism his comments come amid a deepening trade war between beijing and washington the foreign ministers from the gulf cooperation council have been meeting on the sidelines of the u.n. general assembly gathering has organized by the u.s. secretary of state my pompei oh it's the first time such a meeting has been held since the blockade of qatar last year. in the u.s. members of a senate committee are to vote on whether to allow donald trump supreme court nominee to proceed with his confirmation earlier some democrats walked out during the final debate over brett kavanaugh is confirmation on thursday he and one of the women who accuses him of sexual misconduct testified before the committee let's talk to rosen jordan live in washington as we look at these live pictures rosalind talk us through what's been happening as we lead up to that key vote in about fifteen minutes time. daryn it's been

a very contentious business meeting usually it's a very perfunctory gathering of the senators on the committee when they're deciding whether to recommend nominations to the full senate for a vote but of course the most contentious of the nominees on today's agenda and there are ten of them is that of brett kavanaugh who has been nominated to fill the vacancy on the u.s. supreme court there have been a lot of you know. comments back and forth frankly from both republicans and democrats about whether the process has been handled appropriately especially in the light of numerous allegations against the nominee of sexual misconduct when he was a teenager and begun adult first we're going to hear from ted cruz the republican on the committee then we will hear from amy clothes which are one of the democrats on the committee. dr ford has been through hell the last two weeks

i have no doubt have been extraordinarily painful for her for her family the testimony she gave yesterday was powerful it was clearly heart wrenching it was clear she was hurting and hurting mightily and judge kavanagh he too has been dragged through the mud for the last two weeks in a way that has no precedent that this is not normal it might look normal you have the nominee you have the family behind them you have all the cameras on and it wasn't normal it wasn't normal because this nominee was handpicked by a president who in just the last week has gone after his attorney general threaten to fire the deputy attorney general who's overseeing a major investigation and national security investigation hand-picked by a president who's constantly undermining law enforcement constantly undermining the

f.b.i. and yet this president picked a nominee who has the most expansive view of executive power that we've seen divisions and emotions on full display roslan are you getting any indication of how this vote is going to go and what happens after the vote. daryn the nomination is probably going to be indoors when they take the vote at seventeen thirty just a few minutes from now then unless something else comes up on saturday the senate majority leader will hold an open session basically to start the clock so that senators can officially consider brett kavanaugh its nomination as of right now there is probably a vote going to happen on tuesday of next week it could slip to wednesday but again the tentative plan is to open the clock for the consideration of his nomination on saturday roslyn just give us

a sense of how much this whole case has captivated not only the democrats and the republicans but really the whole nation and many parts of the world. it really has captivated both domestic and international attention people pretty much stopped what they were doing on thursday to watch some if not all of the hearings there were numerous conversations happening on social media newspapers and television stations and radio stations both here in the united states and around the world had many open sessions where people were debating the veracity of christine ford's testimony as well as that of brett kavanaugh the groups that deal with sexual violence and domestic violence say that their contacts from the general public have gone up exponentially in the past twelve days since since christine ford's allegations were first made public whether or not this is going to signal

a sea change in the way that such will. allegations are handled not just here in congress but across all facets of u.s. society is really a long term question but there is very much a lot of discussion a lot of anger a lot of tears and there are a lot of people saying that perhaps there needs to be more political activity in order to try to make a real change on a very critical issue in us society ok thank you we shall wait and see what happens with that vote in a few minutes time the catholic leader pope francis has defrocked a prominent chilean priest at the center of a sex abuse scandal it's the stiffest penalty the pope can impose on eighty eight year old fernando carradine with the exception of excommunication he had been originally sanctioned in twenty eleven to live a life time of penance and prayer for sexually abusing minors and the santiago parish huron as tsunami has hit indonesia central sulawesi region waves as high

have more of importance between them than the things which they disagree about but found it quite difficult in their press conference chancellor merkel and president the one to put to one side or hide their disagreements and so you had chancellor merkel saying that they had a common strategic desire for a good relationship but pointing out that in terms of a free open and democratic society the two countries had different perceptions of what that looked like president responded by saying he was looking for a win win relationship between turkey and syria two countries he said that had to respect one another the clear implication we will work together but don't lecture us on the democracy on human rights on the judiciary so issues of common importance both countries wanted to see dealt with they made an announcement on syria they'll be meeting next month bringing in france and russia to help deal with the situation

in syria there is of course the ongoing migration and refugee crisis turkey holding up the floodgates to three and a half million syrian refugees desperate to make it to europe germany very keen to reinforce that deal there's an economic crisis going on it turkey's worst in fifteen years germany its biggest trade partner its banks and business is deeply exposed and of course no one likes the prospect of two nato members turkey in the united states at loggerheads perhaps germany can help solve that little problem along the way so clearly not the easiest of meetings this an exercise in political expediency two countries that recognize they do have problems but they can perhaps try and solve together in slovakia three people have been charged with the murder of an investigative reporter. and his fiance they were detained in a house raid on thursday morning another five arrested have been released its killing in february sparked the biggest street protest in slovakia since the fall

well there had been a lot of thought that perhaps jeff flake who is a senator from arizona who is stepping down at the end of this year. possibly decided not to endorse brett kavanaugh nomination so that the full senate can consider it well he did announce this morning to a considerable uproar from people who support christine blazin forward that he would vote to recommend that brett kavanaugh as nomination be sent to the full senate for consideration this is after he was one of two senators two was say that he wanted to hear more about christian laws in ford's allegations after her story was published in the washington post twelve days ago there's also been some thought that because he has been very critical of the president donald trump that he might be considered someone who would be willing to was stand up for those who

have been victims of sexual assault rather than simply act as the republican who votes along with the rest of his. party and no matter what the issue is no matter what the controversies are so it is a fair assumption that the vote coming out of this committing in a moment's time will be eleven ten along party lines republicans control both the house and the senate certainly they have been controlling the confirmation process for brett kavanaugh all but when you get to the full floor vote which could happen as early as next tuesday all bets are off because it's not just whether jeff flake would then decide to vote for brett kavanaugh to join the high court there are a number of democratic senators who are in tough reelection this fall who could find themselves under pressure to break with their party and to vote for brett kavanaugh not because of what they themselves think about his judicial record or
2:20 am
about the allegations of sexual misconduct but because they represent a largely republican constituency and so they might face pressure from their voters to vote for someone that they otherwise might not support so it's really still up in the air but i think it's fair to assume that unless something changes in the next moment or so that there will be an endorsement to send brett kavanaugh nomination to the full senate for its consideration and twenty four hours ago during the testimonies of cavanaugh himself as well as dr ford we certainly saw a lot of emotion we saw a lot of anger where there are similar scenes today. yes there were you had protesters outside the hearing room who were basically getting rowdy and so capitol police had to arrest them and haul them away you saw a number of senators inside the room on the democratic side get up and walk out at
2:21 am
the very beginning of the session when it was determined that there would be a vote today at this hour on whether to endorse brett kavanaugh his nomination certainly once the discussion of. the nomination began both republicans and democrats were pointing fingers at each other the cues to each side of engaging in partisan political wrangling we heard oh that's special that has not been heard since the nineteen nominees the politics of personal destruction in which the allegation is that the democrats were trying to shred brett kavanaugh his reputation and undermine his fitness for the high court you also heard democrats accusing republicans of doing the same thing and of not taking seriously the allegations made by christine bossy ford and by other women who have come forward by name in recent days that brett kavanaugh mistreated them in earlier years and
2:22 am
that they required and that they should have been given a full investigation and the opportunity to testify before the judiciary committee on thursday so a lot of acrimony we'll see whether or not the so-called comedy that senators say they like to have with each other a sense of trying to be collusion and trying to get along can actually be repaired after this hearing because as we have been discussing daryn this is a matter that has a very much captivated and caused a lot of angry arguments among ordinary americans for the past couple of weeks where does all where does this all leave then the f.b.i. investigation that dr ford had initially. called for because now the dean of the yale law school which kavanagh in fact attended is also calling for an additional investigation before the confirmation process proceeds so where do we go from here when it comes to an f.b.i. investigation. frankly let's put it this way unless the us
2:23 am
president donald trump tells the f.b.i. that these allegations have been made and that there should be a further f.b.i. investigation into these specific charges nothing is going to happen that is because this sort of investigation can only be requested by the presidential prerogative and so it's basically going to be done a loss the president decides otherwise he has already said that because brett kavanaugh has undergone six background checks conducted by the f.b.i. because of his public service and because nothing has ever come up of this nature before he doesn't see why there needs to be a seventh separate investigation that is certainly a point which chuck grassley the chair of the judiciary committee has reiterated throughout this confirmation hearing process so again. tells the f.b.i.
2:24 am
he wants to have this investigated it's not going to happen and essentially once this vote is taken for its testimony is a closed matter interesting we just a moment ago rosen we were showing pictures of protesters are on capitol hill and there was one woman but there she is she's on our screen she's holding up a sign that says i still believe i need to help talk us through that case rosalyn that took place in one thousand nine hundred twenty two hill faced a very similar scenario against clarence thomas at the time stirred up a lot of anger amongst female voters especially are we seeing a repeat of what happened in one thousand nine hundred one. it appears that this is going to be a repeat of the so-called year of the woman anita hill for our viewers who don't know her is a lawyer and now a law professor at brandeis university just outside boston in one thousand nine hundred one she had been working for the o.c.
2:25 am
that's the federal agency that deals with discrimination cases in the workplace she under great duress came forward and testified before the senate judiciary committee to say that clarence thomas when he was her supervisor at the e.e.o.c. sexually harassed her the testimony from one thousand nine hundred one was quite graphic it involves russians of pornography and of unseemly behavior in the workplace anita hill was very quickly mocked and vilified in the popular press pundits by people who supported clarence thomas to join the u.s. supreme court as someone who could not be trusted even though she was a trained lawyer even though she was moving into a career as a law professor she but however because of the way that her testimony was handled by the committee at the time it inspired a number of women to actually run for both the house of representatives and for the
2:26 am
u.s. senate and you saw for the first time in one thousand nine hundred two a number of those women who were so angered by what they saw during that confirmation hearing actually joined the u.s. senate and the u.s. house of representatives a number of those women are still serving in congress today the parallel is this especially with the use of social media there are many more people talking about her experiences that they have experienced that they have suffered similar to that of christine blazin ford and they are pushing each other to actually say that members of congress particularly male members of congress. don't get it and that's the only way to see that these allegations are treated seriously and that people who commit these crimes are tell'd to account is to actually get involved in politics themselves and so we have seen more than three hundred women file to run for house races already this year and you've also seen
2:27 am
a very big surge in the number of people who are registering to vote and who are working on voter registration campaigns to ensure that other people get to vote the anger over this issue is quite palpable i have not seen anything like this since among two million one and that was a case where you saw the people in places actually asking each other can i even say good morning to you can i even say i like your dress is that going to get me in trouble with human resources that same kind of reaction that same kind of soul searching seems to be happening here in the united states today all right and the protesters there they are again believing woman is not a political act trust dr ford that is what one sign says rosalind will move away from this for just a moment but we will come back to you as and when that vote happens that is the scene inside capitol hill right now we will recap some of our other stories and

jordan is joining us from washington d.c. and time has passed because the vote was expected a few minutes ago why the delay are you hearing anything well there's a there are a lot of rumors jeff flake the arizona senator about whom we discussed earlier had said that he was going to vote for calvinists nomination is reportedly wavering he has been publicly confronted by some of the protests rather than stand by for a second let's listen to the chairman.
2:39 am
ok so as we wait for mr carson to commence speaking let me just tell you what you're looking at and some of the senate senators are making their way into the room because any moment now it's actually delayed but any moment now we expect a vote to take place. on whether to allow president trumps supreme court nominee as a personal point of personal privilege confirmation launceston and i can just speak . normally we would start to avoid right now but as a point of personal privilege i would call on senator flake oh thank you. i been speaking with a number of people on the other side we've had conversations ongoing for a while with regard to. making sure that we do due diligence here
2:40 am
and i think it would be. proper to delay the floor vote. for up to but not more than one week in order to let the f.b.i. . continue to do an investigation limited in time and scope. to the current allegations that are there and limit in time to no more than one week and i i will vote to advance the bill. to the floor with that understanding and i have spoken to a few other members. who on my side of the aisle that may be supportive as well but that's my position i think that that we we ought to do what we can to make sure that that we do all due diligence with that in nomination this important and i want to say that this committee has acted properly and the chairman has bent over backwards to do investigations from this committee and to delay this vote
2:41 am
in this committee for a week so that judge or that. that is forward dr ford could be heard and she was yesterday so so that's without agreement i will bow to a dance bill to the floor of her google roll to stay and wait just one second can diane's speak that we haven't said what are we voting on that say we are voting on the motion to report the nomination to the floor the third recall the role. when that's not my standing what mr chairman let the senator explain that. he had it. that is my under my my understanding and if the democrats can speak to it of chris who are you talked about before that the democrats would accept and endorse a one week. f.b.i.
2:42 am
investigation limited in time and scope well so ensure that these are easy since you're the deciding vote here we'll vote and if there's any sort of discussion will go to that after the vote call the roll. up this. time. i. try to explain. why i think i am not going to go on the nominee no. oh no but they know. i have. now. i'm the nominee now. no. i mean. the nominee will be reported to the middle chairman may be recognized yes thank you
2:43 am
mr chairman i just want to thank my friend and colleague senator flake and thank you for giving us the time today to have a conversation a number of my colleagues have asked for a one week delay in order that there might be an f.b.i. investigation of what allegations are currently before this committee i respect senator flake's view that in his opinion it was best to respect your having given dr ford the time to be heard yesterday and advance the nominee to the floor but it is my hope that we could work together on a bipartisan basis to diligently pursue an f.b.i. investigation within the next week not for the purpose of delay but for the purpose of investigating further either allegations made by dr ford or others with a goal towards demonstrating a bipartisan commitment to diligently investigating these allegations thank you mr chairman thank you senator flake senator feinstein thank you i would support that
2:44 am
motion i think we do need this investigation perfect i sort of misunderstood senator flake what you were doing i thought it included the one week investigation so i would like to support the motion for that investigation mr chairman the chair will take turns here. well this committee but we're not the majority leader sooner flake is made clear what it would take him to be comfortable on a final passage vote but it doesn't matter what we say here this will be up to senator schumer and senator mcconnell so it is completely up to the yeah and i think is that it is made himself very clear and senator let's move from reading senator leahy. thoroughly the server i want to make sure because this is so lower prices. when i do agree with a certain marriage zone of that we should have this further investigation so my

understanding is during the week. that is taking place there will be no action on the floor of the united states. on this nomination and correct. cannot i cannot say that let me say again i'm not making i can't make that commitment for the leadership i can only say that i would be only comfortable moving forward on the floor all move it out of committee but i will only be comfortable moving on the floor until the f.b.i. has done more investigation than they have already it may not take them a week i understand that some of these witnesses may not want to discuss anything further but i think we are we owe them due diligence because in german you're chairman just a minute. all i have said to senator flake is that i would advocate for the position he took but i don't control so hundred s.

mr chairman yes senator senator global mr chairman there are other senators has well who may be interested in this negotiation on the republican side and there's not really a set agreement here all of us had already said we were voting now it is simply center flake working with all of us to say for the good of the senate and the good of the court the american people deserve to have the facts followed up on and i really appreciate his willingness to do that and that is what this is about this is simply about and by the way if senator mcconnell wants to go forward in light of that and we still have several senators that haven't said how they're voting on this nominee i actually think this is very important what just happened right now so it doesn't have to have an agreement it is one senator who's standing up there at a corner. mr chairman i just want to express my appreciation to senator flake for allowing this process to move forward there's some difference of opinion among us as to what
2:47 am
exactly the f.b.i. investigation would consist of. some of us think the it has been concluded and supplemented by of this committee's investigation others disagree with that but i respect the fact that not only senator flake advocated to give dr ford a chance to appear in front of the committee. which was the right thing to do but also that he's allowed this process to move forward subject to further discussions about what. the f.b.i. may or may not be able to come up with but certainly he maintains his right to cast his vote yea or nay as he sees fit and maintains significant leverage that way but i appreciate his its support for a full and fair hearing for dr ford and judge kavanaugh as well as his willingness to allow this to go forward subject to his his request mr chairman it's with all i think are on. december feinstein and then if i through the chair could ask
2:48 am
a question of senator flake but as your amendment include continuing the investigation during this period of time. if i can respond there is no amendment i'm simply stating and the discussion that we had between us all as that i would hope and i think we had some agreement before that the democrats who have been i think justifiably uncomfortable moving ahead. could could publicly in an effort to bring this country together. say that we would feel better i'm not expecting them to vote yes but not to complain that an f.b.i. investigation has not occurred and that this what i'm trying to do this is it's countries being ripped apart here and we've got to make sure that we do deal in due diligence i think this committee has done a good job but i do think that we can have
2:49 am
a short pause and and make sure that the f.b.i. can investigate and i understand it is that some of us would have to and i'm prepared to do it make a request to the white house to ask the f.b.i. to do that investigation it would be short. and limited in scope to the current allegations that have been made mr chairman i would just encourage democrats who reads talk to before to endorse that kind of thing that that that we can then move on mr government because of the to our rule we're germ. what it did to our own all right so adjournment. and on that note we will cross over through roslyn jordan joining us from washington d.c. rosalind talk us through what happened in the past couple of minutes because there is there seems to be some confusion on senator flakes call for an investigation and
2:50 am
what happens with that. a little bit confused but as best as we can assess what just happened here first thing that we know for certain is that the committee has voted to recommend that the nomination go before the full senate. eleven to ten that's along party lines republicans voting to send the nomination forward to the full senate the ten democrats voting not to send it ok so that's the first thing that we know the second thing that we know is that jeff flake and we were just talking about the arizona senator when the vote was called on the recommendation. he has now said that he would like the vote on the nomination in the full senate to be delayed by at least one week to not this coming tuesday four days from now but eleven days from now so that the f.b.i.
2:51 am
can have time to investigate the allegations that were brought up during the confirmation hearing of brett kavanaugh and he is increased strongly encouraging members of the committee to go to the white house and to ask the president to authorize this investigation that is implying a couple of things either one that. really rosalyn up a sound bite have to cross over to new york and the qatari foreign minister is holding a press conference on the sidelines of the general assembly so let's listen in to new york and i will cross back to washington d.c. to follow up on the kavanaugh story. you know when with the office of the you know a little bit who's tomorrow if the show if you know what to do it at the top of the office that some would have you. had to have at the. moment to go to the

gym or you. were trying to get our translation sorted into but that is the qatari foreign minister speaking at the sidelines of the u.n. general assembly in new york and he's holding a press conference and this is just off to the foreign ministers of the countries from the gulf cooperation council held a meeting in new york and that meeting was attended and brought to a call to for by the u.s. secretary of state mike it wasn't the first time that such a meeting has been held since the blockade of qatar began in june of last year so that is the qatari foreign minister muhammad's been. holding a news conference at the cattery mission in new york. our
2:53 am
reporter has somehow had about managed to get some comment from the qatari foreign minister as he left that meeting with the secretary of state might come peo and the other gulf countries and he did ask him about what he thought about recent comments made by the saudi foreign minister on the blockade on qatar saying that it could last to ten from ten to fifteen years and i did ask the foreign minister for reaction and what he told him is that no one can predict the future and that regional challenges need to be. as drest first so we're going to move away from this press conference. we're trying to get the translation sorted it's. all right.
2:54 am
we do hope to have the translation sorted for you momentarily that is the category of the foreign minister. speaking on the sidelines of the united nations general assembly in new york let's listen to his reaction when he spoke to our reporter earlier on in new york that. the both the middle east started to go isn't that you see a relation with with the u.s. plus egypt and jordan the meeting was productive so what was what is your reaction to the speech to state to the saudi foreign minister when he said that his country is willing to wait fifteen twenty fifty years at this one for the family and that's part of the house to solve the problem it's own and if you leave from no actually we know what we know what's what it would be the future of the countries even so we cannot predict from now until five or ten or fifteen years or fifteen years but
2:55 am
that can wait also for the better but we have to address the challenges in our region first before we talk we talk about just by putting it like this diplomacy means communications meaning is engaging and this is. all right so that is what the foreign minister had to say a little. earlier on and he is giving a press conference. right now in new york on the sidelines of the u.n. general assembly while that is happening we will take you over to the general assembly itself and that is the foreign minister sergei lavrov speaking there let's listen to what he has to say as exemplified in particular by more than half a century long us blockade of cuba which has been condemned by the international community yet once again lessons are not drawn from history go the number of those wishing to hand down verdicts without any charges or trial is not getting any smaller today assumptions in the spirit of the new tourist highly likely are

sufficient for some of our western colleagues to level like ization is against anyone we've already been through this we remember very well how often spurious pretext were used to justify interventions in unleashed wars as was the case in yugoslavia in one thousand nine hundred nine iraq two thousand and three and libya two thousand and eleven the same methods are being applied to the syria ginsu territory military strike missile strikes were launched and are totally trumped by this pretext on the book fourteenth of this year just hours before international inspectors were expected to arrive at the site of the staged incident we would mourn that any further probing cations by terrorists and their patrons with the use of chemical weapons are unacceptable and the conflict in syria is already seventy years old the failed attempt to effect regime change orchestrated from outside relying on extremists merely resulted in the disintegration of the country and the emergence of a terrorist caliphate in its stead the energetic actions by russia in response to

the request of the government of the syrian air republic and supported by the diplomatic efforts in the framework of the estancia process help to prevent this devastating scenario the syrian national dialogue congress initiated by russia iran turkey this january created. we move away from the russian foreign minister to the cats are a foreign minister left turn in. just by that you see the self has fate to have these gathering we have dealt with so many regional and security topics also we have discussed the strategic initiative in the middle east and for the middle east and this is quite important initiative and there must to be clear principles to be dealt with and to have a lot of discussion transparent discussion discoloring regarding this point the current situation needs that and this gathering is important but we need to
2:58 am
deal with the challenges among these countries between any move for the group to. sort out the matter in the middle east we need to have some credibility in order to make this collective work success also the main principle of respecting the stability of the sovereignty then depend as the independent policy is the mutual interest of the paperless is quite important elements and principles also there must be certain criteria not that working for a certain party or set the country and we also spoke about the porters of having such a coalition based on clear cut throughout to tj's and iraq map for this coalition to be done in this stablish in

a solid manner thank you very much this is a briefing of what has happened. an official from the emirates said that the gulf crisis is not a priority anymore what do you think of this and what is the u.s. need to do in this connection or in this case of course regarding the immorality official in this regards and the. crisis was not us on top of the agenda these days the crisis has been established for certain reasons and we know who are be high in this today we speak about more security challenges and yes there are other priorities when the g.c.c. was the only vice and gathering in the region the challenges in the region
3:00 am
used to be dealt with in the better way but today the g.c.c. is suffering a sort of a cannot believe it realises also we need to ask has any at t.v. meant made in syria in yemen in libya i think the matter of priority is for us depends on the challenges around us and those determine the priority as a holding to them want it just because they don't want to face the realities and the facts right now then it's up to them and these reflect their policies regarding the us we have three shared the partnership between the state of qatar and the not the states we respect the partnership between the g.c.c.
