red cross estimates that more than one point six million people have been affected there are particular concerns about the nearby town of dung where the impact is still unclear the gol is home to over two hundred seventy thousand people but there has been no communication with anyone there since friday afternoon the indonesian president is visiting palo to assess the damage and reassure the people that more help is on the way but for now bodies continue to fill the streets of palo an anxious survivors are being warned not to return to their homes as aftershocks continue door such a al-jazeera. let's get a live update from. in the indonesian capital for us so it's clearly dark that. makes the search and rescue operation very very difficult. indeed but the centenary rescue operation is still ongoing we hearing reports of.
4:04 pm
live victims being found under the rubble of key buildings in provincial city of paolo. the officials are now trying to come back out there trying to spread out there of his cause after identifying key buildings earlier in the day. the challenge now is how to get to the hardest hit areas as was mentioned in the packet such as the town of dongola. we do know that out of the eight hundred over a hundred people died we do know that eleven people is is coming from the region of the angle and we got that confirmation from the indonesian red cross officials who were the first a merchant sea officials who managed to go to the city of the jungle and now the challenge for the next few days is in itself a need to restart a child how to get to other areas beyond palo getting to those
4:05 pm
areas overnight tommy must be almost completely impossible because the roads have gone any public transport system has gone the geography has literally changed. indeed but we we haven't received any confirmation whether they are the. operator. the latest information is military military is ending their personnel to the area now. the the infrastructure in there or affected areas to begin with is actually quite good but the force of the quake was that that actually destroyed. the major roads. as well as other nearby towns along long the coast is this having a knock on effect tommy where you are at the airport to jakarta because those big
4:06 pm
heavy lifting aircraft that the n.g.o.s use the government's use presumably they're coming in and they can do that overnight but that stuff that they bring in that'll be there in jakarta until first light maybe. no i didn't get the first part of your question sorry peter can you repeat that the airport in jakarta must now be hosting incoming aircraft that have got people n.g.o.s and rescue gear on board. yes the airport is only being open only for humanitarian reasons we do know that around over three hundred people have so have been airlifted from the main airport in the nearby city of. the capacity of the airport is already stretched to the limit. the operation of the airport is only being. only
4:07 pm
for until five pm due to a limited. limited supply of electricity. what we do know is in terms of. in terms of support for electricity a number of electrical generators have arrived by via road and then at least by heavy equipment five more have equipment that they have a right of obviously that's not enough to support. the clearing of the debris and also the there are rescue operation in the city clearly tell me this is not on the scale of the two thousand and four christmas tsunami that affected that region as well as well as other areas around the indian ocean but is the government quite close perhaps to a situation where it has to reach out to other countries and ask for help because this is such a big incident to deal with. even though it's nowhere
4:08 pm
near the kill of the isn't thousand and four tsunami we do foresee that there will be in thousands now that there is no indication that the government will appeal for international support this is going to be a very politically sensitive issue because as we all know that. president djoko we know though it's facing an election next year is now you one of the things that will be done by the people here is whether the government whether the national government can actually handle that is that a national disaster such as this scale bear in mind that up until this second the government has yet to officially declare the quake. national disaster now a move to the cleric as a national disaster amounts to emergency situation will have
4:09 pm
a number of repetitions in terms of person such as travel may one thing and so on the sense that we're getting the government is trying to the government is trying its best to make sure that. they are there have the situation under their full control terming thank you very much. we move on to the other top stories now there into the final few hours of voting in the former yugoslav republic of macedonia and a referendum on whether or not to change the country's name the aim is to try to end dispute with neighboring greece voters have to decide whether to accept an agreement to start calling the balkan nation the republic of north macedonia money is the republic of macedonia as deputy prime minister for european affairs he says macedonians understand there is no alternative to against vote. the decision is between black and white here is not about me answers of more good or or less good
4:10 pm
it's logical that it's behind this question of e.u. and nato membership because the reason why we have signed this agreement and why do we have made these negotiations are to open and to pave the way for our nato and e.u. membership so the question is quite logical people today will also whether we want to join nato in e.u. by implementation of the agreement signed greece do you accept this is a huge test for the country and for the voters given that just what two decades ago ethnic albanians in your country took up arms against the government. while a much shorter deal fog people in the all polls we had in the recent period more than eighty percent are in favor and nato and and e.u. also but the problem is that we are living also in the world of fake news and populist propaganda so people are under this attack of fake news that actually they
4:11 pm
are changing their identity and everything will be different after signing this agreement of course it is a challenge it is one of the most important decision the people of this country have been made in the recent twenty five years after independence but is a decision that for certain will open a new chapter in this country that will provide the security and peace for the hundred years to come but also economical wellbeing through nato membership and through your membership was no there is no alternative actually for macedonia in terms of geo political orientation there are small parties n.g.o.s opinion makers that actually are exposing all reflecting the mosco view in the country they are small in number but they are trying to manipulate people through as i said fake news and populist propaganda and i am sure that today people will know to make the
4:12 pm
distinction and make the right decision. ok let's talk to philip petrofsky campaigning against the referendum he joins us from sculpey philip petrofsky what's wrong with the question on the voting paper but of course is wrong because not only only one question people citizens of must be and i ask at the same time three questions are you for the agreement with the greeks are you for membership in the e.u. and out of for membership in nato but of course we don't have an invitation for european union yet so. our vice prime minister said there is a fake news and propaganda but not from our side. on the contrary from their side they're trying to make people think that we will get into you and nato from tomorrow that is not correct the question is not asked to properly and people
4:13 pm
cannot our citizens cannot answer properly. why would you like the same question to be do you just want the question to be let's change the name yes or no and if that is the question how does that question or how does that question carry through on your country's journey moving to the west moving towards the european union and out from underneath that russian sphere of influence. well i think that russian influence is overestimated here and it's also part of fake news again day in macedonia a fake news again that is sponsored by the government i don't see russians here on the streets i don't see russians visiting must go near as official visits i see a miracle i see councillors of germany of european union made nato officials who
4:14 pm
are putting pressures pressure on on the voters of course we would like to join nato and utopian union but we would like that to be fair we would like to be respected and on equal level on this question that we have to answer today we are not respected and we are pushed to change our current constitutional name because greeks want so so it is not acceptable for the majority of people here in macedonia to change the constitutional name and also in the question of the referendum it is not not asked. to be real change their name they're asking are you for european macedonia of course that question implies that everyone is for european macedonia not everyone is you will feel sleepy disagree let me interrupt changeableness to disagree with this money in our last news hour program because he basically said there is no alternative but to go for
4:15 pm
a yes vote so in your mind there clearly is an alternative forty is the alternative you want people to vote no of course point number one and also point number two you're saying the greeks are against it that's not quite true is it because mr sipress the greek prime minister he's on record as saying ok fine but they'll probably get it will probably get voted down anyway when he has to ratify it in his parliament. yeah well that's another problem greeks are awaiting for our decision and then they will pursue and conclude that if occasion if this was a fair agreement they will do now that if idea agreement but they're not sure what will happen in macedonia also they're not sure what will happen in greece because simple as government is not not very well supported then. it is possible to be
4:16 pm
brought down in the near future but the opposition so but that's another question first question from your side was was the alternative alternative is of course european perspective of course a donia but better negotiated not in a hurry not with the white flag and not with capitulation from outside from our side european union in nato has to understand that they have to push not muster donia not mustered only us but greek greek state and greeks to understand that we live together we are not threat for them our name is not threat for them we are good neighbors but they are pushing us to change our name and with changing of the name change of identity and raise it is ingo for a whole history of this territory of this state so yes i mean this is the one you basically want to test for your country in this kind of no man's land between what
4:17 pm
it is today what it was historically and a gucci destination the bush era small he was talking about was peace and security for a hundred years to come ok he's a politician he's selling the idea of course he is but why is that a bad place to try to get this huge. and we've lost the line there to scott never mind we got a good sense of what the opposition feels about that going on in macedonia today still to cover for you in the news hour including these ones the u.k. prime minister says there is only one. of the governing conservatives begin their annual conference. chairman of tesla as part of a settlement with u.s. financial regulators and this will tell you whether the italian champions could keep their perfect start to the season well underway.
4:18 pm
polls are still open in iraq's northern semi autonomous kurdish region for parliamentary elections the vote comes a year after a failed bid for independence it was rejected by baghdad plunging the region into economic and political turmoil security forces in the region where they voted earlier on friday let's go live now to bill and our correspondent. there people are saying it's pretty much tanking. right now has been tanking really always been deteriorating for years but as you say deterioration was only heightened because of the punishment the received for calling the. referendum all eventual secession last year and then of course we had the the retaking of control by the iraqi government all those oil fields around kirkuk that the peshmerga kurdish forces controlled since two thousand and fifteen in those disputed areas and it was vital obviously
4:19 pm
the oil revenue for this region from those fields but if you look at some of the statistics as well an indication of just how important the economy is here and what is on the minds of voters at least official statistics say that around ninety percent of households are having to survive on a thousand dollars. months civil servant wages have dropped up to seventy five percent in some cases and we saw the baghdad government in march reduce the in the federal budget the allocated amount of money for the k o r g from seventeen to thirteen percent now all the parties here in this election have town to the economy is something they say they can deal with but frankly speaking to voters here today they say they've heard that all before whether in fact we do see some of these smaller parties capitalizing on these splits that we've seen in one of the main parties and the repetition of this kind of rhetoric and promises on the economy
4:20 pm
whether we see those smaller parties capitalizing all that remains to be see how potentially important is all this will be blended into those ongoing efforts south of where you are in baghdad to put together a working national government. well as we know those efforts have come to yet another stand still off to those elections in may after which there was a recount questions over vote rigging in that election when the stand there are two main blocs that have appeared in those efforts to form that government but interestingly the kurds the two main kurdish parties you got forty five seats in those general elections have not committed to either of those blocks and we understand that the kurds are waiting for results from this election before they make a commitment as to which group will which they will join on another note it's interesting to note that the president the iraqi president has to be
4:21 pm
a kurd and traditionally certainly recent years it has always been a member of the p u k this year the k d p have filed their own candidate they're putting forward a candidate to fill the position of the presidency it's something again that highlights the lack of unity in the split in kurdish politics in this region as we go forward charles thanks very much well as the voting goes on in northern iraq campaigning has just begun in afghanistan for next month's parliamentary elections there the vote is more than three years overdue and is seen as a test for presidential elections next april tony but he has more now from kabul they can never be described as boring conflicts corruption intimidation and fraud afghan elections have it all but the parliamentary elections due to take place on october twentieth or at least promising something different. new government measures hope to put an end to the problems of previous elections election fraud is
4:22 pm
now a criminal offense voting systems will be cited in public buildings monitored by professional people and a new advanced voting system will be used even so doubts still linger the afghan government has bought more than twenty thousand biometric devices for facial recognition and fingerprinting to prevent voter fraud but only four thousand have so far arrived in the country and operators have not yet been trained many believe there is insufficient time to get the system up and running meaning a return to manual counting and the possibility of irregularities we are worrying about the post-election crisis the losing candidates will not accept the results and the political parties will use as a force to rescue and also to want and target the government voters disheartened by past elections see the biometric system as a big step towards a transparent election process just where it extended to have
4:23 pm
a biometric system is good because many national i.d.'s are fake and there's fraud votes can be bought the elections are three and a half years overdue but because of the uncertainty over the new technology there are concerns that it could be postponed yet again this election is being seen of the test for next april presidential elections then as now the main issue will not just be transparency but it will also be think curity and that is a very delicate situation of the moment with the taliban controlling much a rural afghanistan. the taliban doesn't take part in elections and in the past has had fingers cut off people who have voted the group is making almost daily attacks against the security forces this trend of the taliban is in the weakness within the afghan government and this is certainly something that has emboldened. during the past couple of years. most of afghanistan's population is a literate these men waiting for poorly paid daily work in kabul don't care who is
4:24 pm
elected they care about survival. right now. i still came here with a truck all of us would go with them all of those because we don't have money and we need food. politics can often be seen is about power and money but for the poor life can be defined by the food on their plate and in afghanistan today many people are hungry tony berkeley al-jazeera kabul. britain's prime minister says those who refused to back a so-called checkers plan for brics that are quote playing politics to resume his critics say her plans would compromise the u.k. sovereignty the conservative party is gathering for its annual conference in the city of birmingham with to six months to go until bricks it is still not clear if a deal is even possible well ahead of the conference to resume a said this if we leave with no deal we as the united kingdom government are still committed to doing everything we can to ensure there's no hard border between
4:25 pm
northern ireland and ireland so what's the checkers plan all about what it calls for maintaining freedom of trade but six restrictions on movement of people from the european union into reason made plans the british government regains control of borders britain will stop sending billions of dollars every year to the e.u. but how much britain will pay for its divorce is unclear some estimates around fifty billion dollars one big major stumbling block is what happens to the border between ireland which is in the e.u. and northern ireland which is a province of the united kingdom many don't want a hard border between the two countries to undergo joins us live from birmingham so sagna officially tourism a is telling everyone look the party is going to come together the parliamentary party is going to come together it doesn't look as if that actually is what people are expecting to happen. well exactly and if she had harbored any hopes of there being
4:26 pm
a unified front at this conference than they must have been quite dashed to put it lightly but really put sides those. members of the party who. remain you find that there is a real strong of m.p.'s who are so against this idea of. divorcing from the european union the checkers plan and they are absolutely determined they've said that this is a plan that's dead in the water that it would be a came to the u.k. being like a vassal state as as one m.p. put it as well really very very tough words and in particular one of the full most voices that of the far the former foreign minister boris johnson who in another interview in the sunday times did say that what even so far as to call her plan to be posterous and arrange so really openly and then while they do have
4:27 pm
a volatile relationship as well boris johnson has made absolutely he has hidden his ambitions to secure the leadership of the party and one day of becoming prime minister as well however there is the other side of the party who are dead set against the i did but now if you turn to the more remain side of the party as well they also issued out their own warning saying that they would be a polite rebellion in their own words in the party if a deal doesn't come through so by both sides really prime minister may is really stuck and that the heart of this problem as well is how long her leadership can last amidst all of this strife within the party. so she's got to come out of this looking stronger than she has. or appearing stronger than she appears at the end and there's that goes. there's the specter of boris johnson or a stop boris johnson candidate some people are talking about the current home
4:28 pm
secretary who might be a stop burris candidate because when they go back to westminster when they go back to the house of commons if there's going to be a leadership challenge that's potentially when it would happen. more precisely and they have to measure up to what options they do have and it really is trying to gauge exactly how much strength how much determination to resume a has is able to to be able to carry through with her plan and also in part how she'll be able to carry on through that with the european union as well she has said that she is committed to working with the european you even though she had quite a humiliating. defeat from them in salzburg a few days ago when they completely rejected her plan but she still seems insistent of this is going to if she can pull that off then she perhaps can secure quite
4:29 pm
narrowly her own leadership of the party for some time to come she has said that she is the time and. leaving to have a party for some time to come but it really does depend on whether she does get drowned out in all these competing voices there and as of now there is absolutely no security of whether a deal will come to light just six months from now sonia thanks very much we'll talk again i'm sure. tempe whether his editor said in the right way to go for a nice quiet stay along the banks of the the mediterranean place or it's been pretty poor across eastern parts of the next few days they'll be further west taking the satellite picture look at this coal of cloud if this is what's been known as the the medication that you may have heard about recently there larry of low pressure swirling away some violent winds winds of gusting in excess of one hundred kilometers per hour recently but it's this weakening now i'm pleased to say there's been some very heavy rainfall so there's been some flooding. across parts of graces is the same aloneness of the house of crease earlier on now yesterday you

president donald trump has once again publicly backed his nominee to the supreme court he's ordered an f.b.i. investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct by brett kavanaugh that means a confirmation vote by the full senate will be delayed for at least a week. they have free reign they're going to do whatever they have to do whatever it is they do they'll be doing things that we've never even thought of. everything would be fine i don't know. what to. do i think he's great i don't think there's ever been any person that's been under scrutiny like he has been i think is that a very tough process but he's a good man he's a great judge the great. highly respected for many many years at the top of the list and i hope everything works out great. to my colleague kimberly hell kid who's
4:35 pm
in our bureau in washington for us this hour kimberly so the f.b.i. has got free rein does that mean this potential for more awkward revelations and claims perhaps. there certainly is that potential but the way this process works is that the f.b.i. will conduct its investigation it will be looking into the claims made not only by dr christine blazin ford but also by deborah ramirez and potentially as well julie sweat nick two other women that have come forward with claims against judge kavanagh but this will be a very close process in contrast to the high drama we saw on capitol hill last week this then was the limited in scope investigation conducted by the f.b.i. is completed we believe by friday it will be referred to the white house and then sent to senators so if there are sort of further revelations peter it's unlikely that the public will hear about them at least right away having said that the white house is very concerned and we've heard this on some of the morning chat shows here
4:36 pm
sunday morning in washington talking about the leaking of the information that led to sort of the public awareness about dr chris. dr ford given the fact that she had gone forward to her lawmakers but in fact someone it's believed in those offices leaked to the media so that's one thing that we see the white house drilling down on in defense of their nominee if this means the f.b.i. continue to hold witnesses kimberly as well as new witnesses but it doesn't seem to be laying the groundwork for a particularly speedy produces the talking about a seven day window of opportunity here that takes longer than a week surely. and for the ordinary individual it would but in this case because of the high profile nature of the fact that much of america is very unsettled by this the f.b.i. we are told has devoted enormous number of resources to this but at the same time
4:37 pm
you did hear in that hearing when it took place when the senators decided this f.b.i. investigation needed to be conducted because right now this nomination still remains in doubt there are not the votes to pass the full senate they said this was limited in scope so what that means is that it will be expedited that there are is the possibility if other leads are found they may not be chased down so this is something that is somewhat controversial and even if this does peter save the nomination of judge kavanagh many americans feel that he will not be an impartial judge if he does make it to the highest court in the united states the supreme court so there is already this sort of question about whether or not he can be impartial in light of these allegations but i can tell you at this hour very many people in the united states holding their breath waiting for the results of this but even the results could be in some way viewed as being politicized given the fact they will be handed to the white house and then in turn to the senators if
4:38 pm
prior to that final vote on judge kavanagh's nomination what we should point out the white house is still defending and you heard the president there saying he thinks he will be fine can really just just just walk us through the big a tapestry here for a second it's kind of a noise say pulls the plug on his own nomination at some point over this reinvestigation of old witnesses or indeed new witnesses if donald trump pulls the plug on him the whole thing about this nomination process people were saying this was donald trump's opportunity to put his fingerprints on the supreme court for twenty five or thirty years where would that leave donald trump's presidency if kavanagh does not get the job for whatever reason. it certainly will make it difficult peter for him to deliver on a key promise to his supporters we already saw justice neil gorsuch to supported by donald trump and placed on the high court but certainly particularly evangelical christians in the united states are very very hopeful for another appointment their
4:39 pm
feeling in the united states is that the supreme court is too left leaning and that there needs to be balance really your view on that depends on where you sit on the political spectrum but in terms of donald trump and whether or not he can make another appointment that becomes increasingly difficult with each passing day given the fact the high court begins its next term on october first given the fact that we have the november congressional elections coming up and this is very problematic because if there is a takeover of the house and the senate but particularly in this case the senate by democrats it seems almost impossible that donald trump could make a new appointment of judge kavanaugh withdraws or he does not get the votes in the senate given the fact that there is this very strong resistance movement within the united states to donald trump's agenda it may make it impossible for that appointment a secondary appointment to be approved much as we saw the republicans do with merrick garland for barack obama in his presidency kimberly thanks very much.
