crashing ashore were filmed on mobile phones but there's been no word yet from the city of dongola thirty kilometers to the north which has a population of more than a quarter of a million people tommy so gypped two reports from jakarta. the difficult task of looking for survivors this is what is left in the city of after friday's method to seven point five earthquake and tsunami rescue workers frantically trying to find those who may still be a life search efforts are being hampered by block roads and the collapse periods rescue teams stuck by hand to free twenty four people trapped in the rubble of this hotel the owner told local media people could still be heard crying for help but no heavy lifting equipment was available. dozens remain missing in the city of over three hundred thousand those who did survive the quake and tsunami that follow now have to try to lift off anything they can find things like this of people looting

local shops and siphoning petrol from cars are becoming the norm. is very slowly coming in many injured are being evacuated but the red cross estimates that more than one point six million people have been affected but the killer concerns about the nearby town of dongarra where the impact is still unclear don't go is home to over two hundred seventy thousand people but there has been no communication with anyone in since friday afternoon the indonesian president is visiting to assess the damage and reach a so the people more help is on the way but for now bodies continue to field the streets of. anxious survivors being one not to return to their homes as aftershocks continue. to cut. thomas howes the director of program implementation for save the children he joins us on skype now from jakarta thanks very much for being with us so based on the reports that we're getting and i'm sure
6:04 pm
there are of course the you you're getting as well what is your biggest concern right now as far as the situation there. i think the report explain the situation very well and obviously it's a save the children we are concerned about the situation for children specifically amongst all of those problems of being outlined you also mentioned very clearly the town of dangler we're very concerned you know we have when you go from there we have teams in the ways you believe not been able to access the affected locations so. right now our main concerns are you know for those who have been severely affected in all of the so one point five million in the general area that my in some way be affected we believe that you know around seven hundred thousand of those could be moderate to severe affected and within that obviously we're concerned about children specifically as well and you mentioned the your teams are
6:05 pm
having trouble getting access to those affected regions and we're just showing showing our viewers some of the pictures right now of the aftermath and you know whole areas and roads submerged there's collapsed bridges as well i mean how challenging is it going to be to get the aid to those in need. yeah it's very challenging though there's been a good development today with the year for a little reopening for humanitarian flights which is a big thing that will allow agencies in the government to really start to bring in the much needed stocks and equipment. that we need to kind of. make things make things work essential and yet there's a lot of roads a need to be cleared so this cracks in the road there's also a landslides and you know you you're showing the pictures now as we're talking so it's very very challenging in an earthquake of seven point four seven point five magnitude it's quite area event with and for that to be followed by
6:06 pm
a tsunami obviously that's particularly challenging and it's not you know not something that can really be prepared for to this extent yeah and how does this compare with previous. challenges like this previous disasters in this region. so i mean six weeks to two months ago we have also a very large earthquake nearly seven magnitude in the island of lombok. you know it was a similar situation in terms of the amount of people who were potentially affected you know over a million and i think what we're seeing on the pictures unfortunately you know the about people died. in dongarra although we don't have much information from the gullible already i'm a little we're you know we're talking about eight hundred twenty three people you know that's around more of those who died in lombok just under that so it's obviously significantly more impactful earthquake than the lombok earthquake
6:07 pm
specifically in terms of the epicenter and in terms of the impact of the tsunami that followed it so it is not a normal event extraordinary event and the challenges are also extraordinary. good to speak we're appreciate you talking to us thomas howells there from a save the children now it is all about the name and whether to change it a referendum is taking place in the former yugoslav republic of macedonia the aim is to try to end a longstanding dispute with neighboring greece which has its own province called yes macedonia so voters in the country macedonia are being asked to decide whether to add the word north making it the republic of north macedonia to keep the greeks happy. smarmy is the republic of macedonia as deputy prime minister for european affairs he said macedonians understand there is no alternative to a yes vote. the decision is between black and white here is not about me answers of
6:08 pm
more good or or less good it's a logical that it's behind this question of e.u. and nato membership because the reason why we have signed this agreement and why we have made these negotiations are to open and to pave the way for our nato and e.u. membership so the question is quite logical people today will also whether we want to join nato in e.u. by implementation of the agreement signed greece do you accept this is a huge test for the country and for the voters given that just what two decades ago ethnic albanians in your country took up arms against the government. while a much shorter deal fog people in the all polls we had in the recent period more than eighty percent are in favor in the till and do you also but the problem is that we are living also in the world of fake news and populist propaganda so people
6:09 pm
are under this attack of fake news that actually they are changing their identity and everything will be different after signing this agreement of course it is a challenge it is one of the most important decision the people of this country had made in the recent twenty five years after independence but is a decision that for certain will open a new chapter in this country that will provide the security and peace for the hundred years to come but also economical wellbeing through nato membership and through human wish it was so there is no alternative actually for macedonia in terms of geo political orientation there are small parties n.g.o.s opinion makers that actually are exposing all reflecting the mosco view in the country they are small in number but they are trying to manipulate people through as i said fake
6:10 pm
news and populist propaganda and i am sure that today people will know to make the distinction and make the right decision. macedonia's deputy prime minister for european affairs there talking to my colleague peter dobby earlier one of the machine is a political analyst and host of a national television political show called program two hundred he joins us via skype now from sculpey a thanks very much for being with us so first of all how significant is this for macedonia if it happens absolutely very important for the country and the future of the country. has been said before with this referendum macedonia should get the deadlock out of the way and get easily into your atlantic family if the referendum goes as it sees expected then all the international leaders secretary-general need
6:11 pm
to representative said that the road to macedonia for integration needs really really open and how how strong is the sentiment right now for joining nato. well actually if you ask the people all the or everybody almost everybody or majority said it was a significant majority said that they are willing their country macedonia to be part of nato but for the moment all the focus he said the referendum and the numbers as. you may as well know it is important that more of fifty percent of the population should go out and vote and majority of them then should vote for this referendum and then. everything will be much easier for macedonia for a public of macedonia as it's called here in macedonia right now to be member of nato or e.u.
6:12 pm
institutions for the moment everybody's anticipating and to see what is going to be the turnout after a couple of hours until seven o'clock pm here scorpio time all right so let's see if the yes for wins and it's a big enough turn out to more than fifty percent what's the next step. well after that the parliament did will have a very big important role because some constitutional changes should happen that means that the m.p.'s in the parliament to should vote. or actually change the name and accept that macedonia world be called after their republic of north macedonia this is the big. change that will happen in our country after this then in greece also the parliament of greece should to ratify the
6:13 pm
agreement between two countries and when this happened the door let's say if you gradually to nato will be opened a very very soon later on the access and talks with macedonia with european union also will be. they started by there will be much easier to go forwards into. integration so basically if the referendum goes on the parliament will have a key role to make changes in the constitution get to speak with you know seen. in skokie thanks very much now us president donald trump has once again publicly backed his nominee for the supreme court he's ordered an f.b.i. investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct by brett kavanaugh that means a confirmation vote by the full senate will be delayed for at least another week. they have we re going to do whatever they have to do whatever it is they do they'll be doing things that we've never even thought of. everything
6:14 pm
will be fine but i don't know you never know. what the hell. do i think he's great i don't think has ever been any person that's been under scrutiny like he has been i think it's been a very tough process but he's a good man he's a great great. highly respected for many many years at the top of the list and i hope everything works out great. well let's cross live now to kimberly how kids in washington so kimberly what what's the scope of the s f b i's investigation here and is a week really long enough over. well typically these do take longer but these are exceptional circumstances and the senate judiciary committee mandated that this be limited in scope lasting only one week what we're learning more in terms of the probe is that there will be two investigations or rather two there's one of best
6:15 pm
a geisha but it is in looking at two different claims made against judge kavanagh the first of course by dr christine blazin forward the second by deborah ramirez a yale classmate when he was in law school there so those are the two that will be focused on there is a third allegation against judge cavanagh and at this time it does not appear that the white house is authorized for the looking into the claims by a woman by the name of julie sweating certainly this is going to cause some controversy in the united states but at the same time this debate overall is particularly partisan republicans saying that they still are defending their nominee as we've seen from white house officials on the sunday morning chat shows saying that they still believe that he is credible and compelling at the same time democrats raising concerns about if judge kavanagh is confirmed to the highest court right now it doesn't appear there are the votes in the senate to do that but that could change with the results of this f.b.i.
6:16 pm
probe that is expected by the end of the week but there are questions about whether or not he would be viewed by americans as being objective and impartial given the seriousness of the allegations against him and how that might play out linger in americans minds. and of course everyone who watched it remembers those the hearing that took place on friday you know many americans were riveted by the whole thing the testimony from from brett kavanaugh from his accuser christine clancy for to what extent was that kind of a window on the mood of the country right now and how divided use. i think what was most striking for many americans particularly myself as i watched a lot of this is that. in the u.s. congress it has always been known that the house of representatives or committees on the house can be particularly rockets that there is quite a boisterous debate that will take place there it is strongly partisan but the
6:17 pm
senate was always seem sort of to be and give the appearance of holding the statesman a much more measured and polite discourse but we didn't see that during the senate judiciary committee hearings in fact it was quite strong in terms of the language that was used it was deeply partisan and we saw that as a result of the vote coming out of the senate judiciary committee that it went to the floor only on the condition of this f.b.i. probe so certainly it seems that this is another issue yet another issue that has divided americans even if judge kavanagh is confirmed in the u.s. senate and appears before the high court we should point out that that term begins october first this is certainly going to be an election issue for not only democrats but as well as republicans the midterm elections will not only be a referendum on the agenda of donald trump but also on the conduct of those lawmakers that are currently making this very important decision this is something that will be watched very closely in november and we should point out that if
6:18 pm
americans are feeling particularly like they're left with a bad taste in their mouth over this issue it's very very likely that the democrats could not only take control of the house but there is the potential that they could also take over the senate in november so what's the political calculation here for for the republicans then because they're the ones in control of this process and if . judge kavanaugh is indeed confirmed and the republicans take a beating in in the midterms. it doesn't really matter for them because i mean the argument goes elections come and go but the supreme court appointment is for life. exactly and you hit the nail on the head right there with that question i think that there is the calculation among republicans and particularly donald trump who came into office very much with the support of conservative republicans and particularly even christians who strongly believe that the the ideology of the
6:19 pm
highest court in the united states was shifting further and further to the left and in order for there to be balance they needed a president who would make these lifetime appointments that they believe would balance the high court decisions so certainly this is something that republicans have factored into their minds knowing that there is a risk of losing not only the house but potentially the senate in november they are pushing hard for this nomination of judge kavanaugh to be confirmed kind of recognizing that this may be the only opportunity because of democrats get control of u.s. congress this potentially could be a nomination the vacancy on the high court that could be left open indefinitely we saw republicans do this under barack obama with the appointment of merrick garland and it's there's very very much an off opportunity here a possibility that it could happen again. kimberly how can live there in washington thanks kelly. plenty more ahead on this news out how broken promises an economic

a more severe divorce from the european union and they are willing to take it to no deal something that business leaders and other politicians have really warned against saying that it would cause chaos there now most. and all of these extreme bricks it use these hard bricks it call there is boris johnson the former foreign minister he has been very vocal about his dismissal of checkers he has also try to come up with a kind of vision as he sees it on brics it but yet really scant on details in the interview that he gave to a newspaper he talked about even building a bridge between the british mainland and a northern island something which has even been lost well sort of dismissed really by his allies even there but don't forget also that this is an opportunity for boris johnson to try and play for leadership because the reasoning is in a weakened position and boris johnson's perceived as

a very ambitious politician who will try and grab for a leadership challenge if it's possible we don't know which there remain aside there's also a warning from those pro remain and peace within the party who say that if mrs may does not come back with a decent deal that will minimize the damage or breaks it in there would be in their words a polite rebellion. all right sonya go live for us in birmingham thanks five after five days waiting at sea fifty eight migrants have been transferred off a charity ship and handed over to authorities in malta a deal was struck on tuesday to relocate migrants from malta to four other european countries aquarius is the last non-government rescue ship operating in the mediterranean sea. oppose of just closed in iraq's northern semi autonomous kurdish region for parliamentary elections the vote comes a year after a failed bid for independence it was rejected by the baghdad government plunging
6:25 pm
the region into economic and political turmoil security forces in the region voted earlier on friday let's take a closer look at this parliamentary election more than three million people were eligible to vote in the kurdish region with more than seven hundred candidates competing for a hundred and eleven seats and that includes five seats allocated for turkmen five for christians and one for armenians but the election is being seen as a test of kurdish unity and public trust in the main parties let's go to charles strafford who's live for us from there bill so charles. just how much of a factor is the economy in all of this. because you say the economy has suffered hugely as a result of the failed referendum last year the baghdad government coming down hard on the goods you pulled out of bed but instead to say that the economy had been
6:26 pm
suffering for years that the policy would fall that referendum only exacerbated it has did to force withdrawal of kurdish forces from kirkuk which they controlled since two thousand and fourteen when the iraqi military fled and leisel offensive to kirkuk was hugely important for the kurds because of the oil revenue that they were getting from there in those disputed areas i mean government statistics all sorts or the authority statistics here say they move the ninety percent of households having to survive on less than a thousand dollars a month so we saw a big drop in the salaries of civil service but of course the baghdad government in march also reduced the. of the federal budget that allocates to this region the politicians have been promising change post the two main parties the cavy ph and the p u k as well as

a lot of these new fledgling small apologies as to whether they're going to make any inroads any real danger in will can only be described as a fairly entrenched political landscape a with those two parties still managing so much whether in fact it will make any difference the economy obviously remains to be seen and what implications is all of this going to have for getting a working government in baghdad given that the president of iraq has to be an iraqi kurd. let's right we've seen those negotiations in trying to fool a national government in iraq come stuck for four months now after that after that recount in that controversial election what we understand though is that there are two main blocs that have appeared what's interesting though is that thus far the kurds who won forty five seats in that election have yet to commit to either of the blocks so they are being very much described as potential king makers in any

coalition national government iraqi government and as you rightly say the president of iraq has to be a kurd now traditionally that has been a p u k member. but this year we have seen all these elections we've now seen the k d p putting forward their own candidate as well something that both sides have rejected and indeed the. politicians in baghdad saying that that is not a good idea when it highlights. these widening seemingly these widening divisions between the k.t. pay and the p u k and it also highlights just how important a selection is here these column entry elections in terms of you know the future of political stability not only of iraq but of course the want to reach and. charles thank you charles traffic in be it. now in brazil the outgoing president michelle

hello again you're watching al-jazeera a reminder of our top stories this hour the death toll from an earthquake and tsunami in indonesia has risen to more than twelve hundred people most of the confirmed dead are in power who on the island of rescuers are still trying to make contact with people in the town of. polls are closed for parliamentary elections in northern iraq is kurdish region the vote comes a year after a failed bid for independence that was rejected by baghdad plunging the region into economic and political turmoil. and that's just an hour and

a half left before polls close in the former republic former yugoslav republic of macedonia a referendum on whether or not to change the country's name the aim is to try to end a dispute with neighboring greece voters to decide whether to accept an agreement to stop calling their nation the republic of macedonia. campaigning is underway in afghanistan for next month's parliamentary elections the vote is more than three years overdue and is seen as a test for presidential elections next april tony berkley is in comp. they can never be described as boring conflicts corruption intimidation and fraud afghan elections have it all but the parliamentary elections due to take place on october twentieth are at least promising something different new government measures hope to put an end to the problems of previous elections election fraud is now a criminal offense voting systems will be cited in public buildings monitored by professional people and
6:37 pm
a new advanced voting system will be used even so doubts still linger the afghan government has bought more than twenty thousand biometric devices for facial recognition and fingerprinting to prevent voter fraud but only four thousand have so far arrived in the country and operators have not yet been trained many believe there is insufficient time to get the system up and running meaning a return to manual counting and the possibility of irregularities we are able to post election crisis in candidates will not accept that and the political parties will use as a force to rescue and also to. chart the government voters disheartened by past elections see the biometric system as a big step towards a transparent election process just very thick some did have a biometric system is good because many national i.d.'s are fake and there is fraud votes can be bought the elections are three and a half years overdue but because of the uncertainty over the new technology there
6:38 pm
are concerns that it could be postponed yet again with of action is being seen of the next april presidential election then as now the main issue will not just be transparency but it will also be think curity and that is a very delicate situation of the moment with the taliban controlling much a rural afghanistan. the taliban doesn't take part in elections and in the past has had fingers cut off people who have voted the group is making almost daily attacks against the security forces this trend of the taliban is. in the weakness within the afghan government in this is certainly something that emboldened it all about the in the past couple of years. most of afghanistan's population is a literate these men waiting for poorly paid daily work in kabul don't care who is elected they care about survival. right now if i still came here with

should start to decrease because the pace of the storm has been tracking along at around forty five kilometers per hour so really really really quick moving system this one by the time we come to monday you can see how it's clear three broad skies to come back in behind just not just a little further south as this is the next one to keep an eye on this is calm right that's going to continue making its way further north which over the next couple of days looks like a law as you try week four of japan when this does finally move out and i've been trying he does move out of the way but by the weekend this next system will move through and i think we could see further was for disruption across the good parts of the main islands. in the democratic republic of congo there been calls to reject the use of electronic voting machines in december stener election a coalition of opposition leaders says the devices aren't secure and can be tampered with they're also trying to put their weight behind a consensus candidate to take on the ruling party catherine sawyer reports from the
