aftermath of this disaster. five pm last friday a magnitude seven point five earthquake struck indonesia just north of the city of seoul always the island it was so powerful that it generated a tsunami warning boys did not detect detect the huge waves that came roaring towards bay now the largest wave first struck the town of dongarra before it flooded south then hitting the city of palu at five twenty two pm now this shows that the moment that that tsunami hit the coastline waves of high of fixed me to then pushed inland. home to six hundred fifty thousand people but some two point five million people live in the whole area that's been hit by this earthquake and tsunami more than sixty six thousand homes
1:03 pm
washed away and nearly seventy one thousand people have been displaced or left scrambling for very basic supplies the death toll has jumped from hundreds to more than a thousand in the week that's past and hospitals overwhelmed with the more than twenty five hundred people who've been critically injured. let's go over now to polly that's the city has been sent. rain hey is in a cap that's been set up for displaced people so tens of thousands of people lost their homes one says the situation for them and cancer like the one. yes laura difficult to believe isn't it that it's been a week already since that disaster since the earthquake and tsunami as you mentioned at that destroyed so many homes killing so many people particularly the
1:04 pm
tsunami that roared down the coast taking everything with it before crashing into the city all still so much going on there is a search and rescue mission that is of course still underway right around the affected areas although as each day has passed it's increasingly turned into a search for bodies rather than a search for survivors still also many communities around the disaster zone crying out for help saying that they have not received substantial assistance in the form of a from the outside and then the homeless as you mentioned the government saying around seventy one thousand people rendered homeless other estimates put it much higher at around three hundred thousand many of them sleeping now out in the open in areas like this waiting for substantial assistance. people here escaped the earthquake and tsunami but the fight for survival goes on in palo parks have become refugee camps for those who have nowhere else to go their houses were destroyed many family

members killed. now they use whatever they can find to build shelters while still struggling to comprehend what's happened to them. my sister was trapped and they're all they managed to get their routes but my mother in law is still missing. after me there is some food being given out of him about on but it's well. short of what's needed there's still a lack of basic supplies around the affected areas including here in the heart of parlors city where people have been camping for a week despite all the money from the indonesian government and all the offers of assistance from foreign governments no one's been able to supply the people here with temporary toilets or adequate shelter. part of this camp is on the grounds of the mayor's office though sheltering here say he's only been to see them once when the indonesian president was in town we asked the mayor for an interview but his staff declined refugees say grateful for the land to sleep on but they need more
1:06 pm
help than i ate the plant i can tell you there are some toilets over there but they are full of excrement so i eat only once a day so i don't have to go maybe everyone is ok at the moment but if they don't sort it out we will have to hear some people are waiting for space on military flights out others say they have no where to fly to everyone is scared of more earthquakes and wondering when or if they'll be able to go home. so clearly some desperate situation some desperate scenes in areas like this where people are camping out as is always the case in situations natural disasters like this some of the most vulnerable children with me now to talk more about this is the baby coaching from save the children thank you for joining us so what are you seeing out there. been affected by this disaster. more than forty thousand
1:07 pm
children are protected by disease. some of them already been transferred from this place to the nearby city and then we are just. one hundred children are. being displaced and experience. all of them have experienced. what drinking water and also some of their already suffered from these psychological distress so a lot of concerns going forward in the weeks months and years ahead what are some of the vulnerabilities in the in the immediate aftermath of a disaster when we're talking about children. been separated from their parents and then we tried to and then doing the family tracing. for them and obviously you're specifically involved with children with save the children but
1:08 pm
a lot of criticism of the government's performance in response to this disaster that it's been slow people haven't received enough aid if any why is it seemingly taking so long in your opinion. the access is the biggest challenge just. those by. the house and that's one of the concerns. couldn't manage. and distribute the supplies on that area and it's improving now it's improving the government actually dropped supplies by air and also we. have been. all right thank you very much that is a baby quoting from save the children clearly doing a very important job we mentioned criticisms of the government one of the main ones has been a lack of heavy equipment here from the outset rarely to begin clearing away the
1:09 pm
rubble to speed up the search and rescue operation and the recovery operation operation right now the government says from its departments it has eighteen excavates is in the disaster areas continuing that work there are some from private companies as well helping but the government says it needs hundreds more to continue with that work effectively well let's go now to my colleague andrew thomas who is across town in pilot city outside the rural hotel which is one of the most severely damaged buildings still some people missing inside that building andrew you have traveled around some of these disaster areas over the past week what's your sense of how the government has handled the response. well talking to family members of those who are missing the response has not been fast enough as you say when the earthquake struck exactly one week and one hour ago
1:10 pm
now this hotel the row row row what is now left of it was one of the buildings most badly damaged they were between fifty and seventy people inside when it collapsed no one to know exactly how many saw in the search operation which so that was quite saying and watching has been painfully slow thirty two bodies have been pulled out but they do feel the search operation has been too slow and they feel it got going much too slowly as well i think it got going faster by being more lives could have been. the rower. still digging and still finding bodies after a horn sounds the machinery briefly stops and that is carried out but it's not. as husband. is still somewhere inside last friday he was staying at the hotel on business the couple spoke to in the afternoon three hours later both their worlds
1:11 pm
collapsed. and his son drove eighteen hours straight here. when we arrived there was nothing going on even though we could hear people crying for help some local people tried to help using their hands but they couldn't do much without machinery. have now spent six days sitting by the hotel waiting while we were talking the horn sounded again another body has been found but it was another mother very disappointing from the government of the little. very late about how more lives could have been saved if they got here yes. i'm sure. into these years government says it brought in twenty one heavy machines to the loo on friday forty six in total since last friday when it's running this operation seems thera and professional but the search started late and
1:12 pm
even now it starts at nine thirty you thought i was but the next day and we hope we have more. professionals here just the first to be saying lessons must be learnt. without issue of not being able to after dark has real consequences another hotel why in that was really badly affected in the earthquake is the mic you're about two or three kilometers away from where i'm standing and when they were searching on thursday so about twenty four hours ago now a french team of specialists sent him some very high tech equipment using white point some way and they thought they detected a heartbeat but it was about this long yesterday a couple of hours earlier because it was getting dark they couldn't do any active searching well they say that may have been a false positive their machinery may have given them an error but nevertheless they had to stop for the night and when they went back this morning in that same clever
1:13 pm
machinery in trying to text signs of life the word numb and that is what were you both here we saw around this hotel today and we've seen in previous days as well but the search operations got going to slowly and they're not going even now at a fast enough place. yes certainly a devastating story there the one about the mchugh hotel one of many of course that we have come across over the course of the past week thank you andrew well we talk about the homelessness there is also nothing for people to do here there is no work the city the affected areas have largely really being closed been shut down since the disaster struck on friday a week ago and that's partly why we have seen so many people those amazing scenes that thousands of people lining up there waiting for hours trying to get a place on one of the military planes that is getting people out of the disaster areas well let's go now to jim duggan who is also in city.
1:14 pm
shopping mall in also severely damaged we saw the indonesian president joko widodo in town twice over the past week he said one of the main priorities is to restart the economy are we starting to see signs of that or is it too early to talk about those sorts of things. well when we're seeing that we're seeing economic movements little by little but i guess what we're seeing is just a response to the needs the emergency response needs of the people here of those who need to respond to the needs of those have been displaced now i am at a one of the many shopping complexes there have been destroyed here in tell you i'm going to step aside and just show you the magnitude of the devastation of this shopping complex this is just been saying the main street here in for lou and this is part of a big shopping complex as you can see the third floor is completely caved in and
1:15 pm
it's happened it's friday six pm exactly a week ago at this time when mom operations are busiest there had been looting attempts at losing over the last few days and now this has been basically taken under control by state forces they have just started clearing operations the main areas the main entrance of the building complex has been slowly being cleared they're pulling out cars that have been stuck now this whole thing is under control of the minute she should know they have rescuers have not actually access that mall yet no one has been taken out of their retrieval and rescue operations has not started so you can just imagine the agony of so many families waiting for news about their loved ones now when that situation is similar all across by lou and other neighboring districts we drove around coastal areas communities bridges homes
1:16 pm
schools mosques collapsed. but when you talk about reconstruction it's just not going to be in one your area alone it's all about raising one community to another when and as you mentioned you know the issue of schools basically the vice president actually mentioned earlier that they intend to rebuild and open schools within the next month that emergency operations are going to continue for the next two months and they will continue bringing in more help as much as possible we're seeing foreign volunteers coming in here and getting involved but what we see basically is indonesian government leaving all of these operations a lot of machinery going around trying to clear does a very they expect that to happen many months but then again that is just the clearing part the reconstruction the rebuilding thing is something that is going to last for years and that is something that even the indonesian government asked them when. thank you very much yes there is
1:17 pm
still in all whole a lot of work to do as i mentioned the search and rescue operation still very much going on even though the cries for help these signs of life slowly but surely over the course of the past week have faded away still or there is incredible resilience in the communities around the affected areas here in central sulawesi the people that i have spoken to over the past week or so are determined to rebuild determined to go back to their homes to start their lives again even though of course that could be a very long way off. plane. holloway thanks very much against a very full think of the situation there as you say it's a long road to recovery for the people of. plenty more ahead on the increasing we take a look at the greek government's efforts to help refugees as winter approaches plus
1:18 pm
. i was on the iraq syria border and i'll tell you why thousands of women and children previously associated with are stranded with no future prospects. and in sports the formula one world champion now really avoids a huge crash in japan with the action from practice. the winners of this year's nobel peace prize have just been just over an hour ago. the norwegian nobel committee has decided to award the nobel peace prize for twenty eighteen to dennis machir and. for their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict. both laureates have made
1:19 pm
a crucial contribution to focusing attention on and combating such war crimes. dennis mcrib is the hill who has devoted his life to defending these victims. rod is the witness who tells of the abuses perpetrated against herself and others each of them in their own way. has him to give greater visibility to wartime sexual violence so that the perpetrators can be held accountable for their actions across one journal whole was that a heavy announcement. so the two thousand and eighteen nobel peace prize awarded here in oslo this morning in part a surprising part of house not

all fight or something nor the victim had done before and something that was considered really brave yet late later that year she got resettlement to germany where she continued a complaint against. sexual violence as a weapon of war that in itself is an extraordinary achievement isn't it but on top of that she's managed to challenge the rules of the z.t. society to allow her and other raped women to be allowed back into the community. yes indeed not only. voice women been knocked on the pawn before because of what they have gone through and the experiences they have had and the toyman they went through by the cup the balls will then tire of the community is allegedly marginalized community living

trade taiwan the south china sea religion human rights and cyber security and of course the rest of asia and the rest of the world is now watching on nervously wondering where this war of words is heading and it's not just a war of words because last weekend in the south china sea we almost had a collision between a u.s. warship and a chinese warship they came to within about forty meters of one another and there is a real concern that that brinkmanship on the high seas is starting to get out of control now on monday the u.s. secretary of state mike pompei will be here in beijing he's paying visits to south korea north korea as well as japan he's here to brief china on what the united states is saying to north korea as it tries to breathe new life into its north korea policy but of course he'll be looking to try to ease tensions with china but that job has just been made more difficult it seems by what the vice president has

seven month stay in morea now they have a hospital appointment after just a week involving the government has had to keep up with new arrivals from turkey so it has moved more than eight hundred thousand asylum seekers this year from the islands to the mainland and it plans to move six thousand more by november the aim is twofold to relieve the islands and offer refugees more humane conditions here the government has achieved at least the second goal people are visibly relaxed the european union provides them with a small stipend for groceries that and an e.u. rent subsidy for their hotel apartments have helped the local economy which used to rely on a different kind of subsidy. the out early who came here had social security subsidies that's all been done away with and tourism here is down to a quarter of what it was before the crisis or if you g.'s have brought the work back up to a decent level. many of these asylum seekers will end up receiving international

1:37 pm
unsanitary conditions we are we are seeing pregnant women sleeping on the floor. sleeping in mud sleeping in what floor. children in similar conditions and we're looking at situation where they very little access to information they have no access to sexual and reproductive health care and no access to to adequate interpretation in their languages and these are all. problems that limits the possibility of women to to participate in decisions that affect their lives to actually meet their needs and to to play an important role in the change they want to see for themselves what we're highlighting he's these women actually have very clear suggestions very clear demands on the east can improve their conditions right now we all saying please moving thousands of refugees from these cabins on the islands to the mainland seem to be trying to improve the situation is
1:38 pm
that not happening. we have seen so welcome of obviously from from the government that they resume urgency relocation of people right now there is an acknowledgement . that the numbers and on the islands are just unsustainable that the services and facilities available cannot provide and shelter adequate shelter to these people however in a situation where policies actually require that thousands of people are trapped on greek islands until they're there and asylum applications are processed and in a situation where there isn't adequate facilities also on the mainland we do not have the lot of good housing offered to these people many of the of the people that are being transferred are transferred to unsanitary comms camps that have been shut down before because they were not suitable are now opened again for people to be
1:39 pm
hosted and there is a desperate need for an improvement in the conditions both on the islands and in the mainland as a matter of urgency but there is need for longer term solutions for integration and there is also need for all the european governments to support greece by sharing the responsibility for for the number of people that are seeking protection in europe welcoming refugees in other european countries as well because the issue of refugees arriving on european shows is gone largely alz of the headlines and yet places like greece is still saying many people arriving all nationals. it is true this is this is a crisis european government has tried to do to push away and this is something that is still ongoing people are still seeking protection people are still in need of safety people are still arriving greece's shores and these people need to be well countries people need to be welcomed the not to put conditions and most
1:40 pm
importantly and it is really important to highlight the voices of women and girls and this is as much as a refugee issue as it is a women's rights issue and we are seeing around the world right now women and girls raising their voice against abuse exploitation inequality and refugee women are doing the same their voices must be listened to. leaders politicians authorities need to act on those boards and implement those demands fotis thank you very much for joining us from athens. thousands of women and children captured after the defeat of eisel being held in detention facilities in camps in iraq and syria human rights watch as nations to repatriate the citizens of the whole fair trials for those accused of being associated with i sell some advantage of it has wolf well came on the iraq syria border. the children and i nice a camp in syria tease each other and play like most others their age but because

1:43 pm
repair treat at least some of the women and children it's a difficult situation and very tragic expression for the children i know a lot of countries have expressed interest in bringing the children back to their country depending on where the fighters are from but right now that problem still needs to be solved rather than just putting them in a camp but many countries do not want anything to do with the people who lived under eisel rights activists see injustice breeds contempt and instability and the danger from a lack of free trial and indifference from home countries is a continuing cycle of vengeance and not something that groups such as i saw. taken advantage of some of the job with others they were on iraq syria border. and it turns on saturday for part three of our summer ben jarvus reports from our home where we look at building efforts in towns destroyed by eisel fighters. india has signed a controversial new deal to buy russian s. four hundred missile systems india force ahead with
