transformed by a chance encounter. the girl who saved my life i witnessed documentary on the. all eyes on the saudi embassy as the last known photo emerges of journalist jamal khashoggi entering the building in istanbul. and this is live from london coming up. a diplomatic shock at the united nations as nikki haley the u.s. ambassador to the u.n. resigns. in zimbabwe a return to the bad old days of fuel queues and food shortages this time it's down to a new banking tax. and new details are revealed about one of the men accused of traveling
7:01 pm
to the u.k. to poison a former russian spy. and her u.s. president donald trump says he plans to speak with saudi arabia over the disappearance of the saudi journalist jamal khashoggi his comments come as international pressure is mounting with the u.k. and e.u. both saying they're treating the incident seriously because he has not been heard from since you entered the saudi consulate in istanbul last tuesday turkish officials believe he was murdered there saudi arabia says these allegations are baseless stephanie decker has more from istanbul. it's an ominous image. on security camera video entering the saudi considered last tuesday his fiance who accompanied him to the consulate has verified it it's the last time he has been seen in public just a few days ago the saudi journalist spoke to b.b.c.
7:02 pm
radio recently a saudi columnist an economist who was close to the royal court got a listed and that's a good many people because here we are talking about somebody was close to the government right right i don't even want to use the term this is a descent a descent president then this isn't i mean the people who are this is not even being dissidents right they just have an independent mind and to know i don't call myself an opposition i always say i am just right that i want a free environment to write and speak my mind turkish sources say they believe he was killed inside the consulate saudi arabia categorically denies that saudi authorities have now said they will allow turkish investigators inside the consulate to continue their investigation but this opposition member and human rights activist says he is skeptical anything will be found there on top of us once you open it seems like
7:03 pm
a professional job it's already been seven days the saudis weren't sure about themselves they would not let the turkish authorities and. the u.s. president and a close saudi ally have this to say. president is going to. happen . but i will be at some point where i know nothing right now i know what everybody else does know the u.s. secretary of state is also going saudi arabia to support a thorough investigation into the disappearance the saudis did give a tour of the building to a group of journalists on saturday the consul opening a small cabinet and what appears to be a fuse box in an effort to show she. was not there. there are a lot of allegations and much speculation about what happened to jamal khashoggi here inside the saudi consulate but turkey hasn't yet provided any evidence to back up their belief that he may have been murdered here and saudi hasn't provided any proof that he ever left the only thing we know for sure is that jamal khashoggi
7:04 pm
entered the saudi concert a week ago and no one has seen or heard from him since in a moment we'll hear more from stephanie decker in istanbul first though let's get a notice from the white house with can really help it can really what can we read into these comments from the u.s. president. i think it's safe to say that the white house is gravely concerned by the disappearance of the missing writer there is growing concern in washington not just at the white house but also in the u.s. congress the u.s. president saying as he spoke in the oval office in the last couple of hours that he is concerned and he is raising this issue with the saudis this echoes some of the statements coming from his state department u.s. secretary of state mike pump aoe releasing a statement saying that they are concerned about the disappear as they have spoken with the kingdom of saudi arabia through diplomatic channels in the united states is calling for a thorough and transparent investigation the vice president mike pence saying that
7:05 pm
the free world deserves answers but perhaps some of the most striking comments coming from republican senators lindsey graham as well as bob corker corker who chairs the foreign relations committee saying that he has also raised the disappearance of the missing writer with the saudi ambassador and we will respond accordingly this from graham if there are truth to the allegations it would be devastating to the u.s. saudi relationship there will be a heavy price to be paid economically and otherwise it is safe to say that this is very high registering high on the radar of u.s. officials as well as lawmakers and that further action will be taken if the united states feels that it's necessary although that action very unclear indeed as you say. and overrule how will it impact on the on the saudi u.s. relations. well you know it's interesting because the united states established diplomatic ties in one thousand thirty three with saudi arabia and since then it
7:06 pm
has been willing to turn a bit of a blind eye to some of the controversial aspects of the kingdom itself particularly with respect to human rights that changed somewhat under barack obama but we saw when donald trump came into office his very first foreign trip was to riyadh a reset of the relationship if you will back to sort of the as long as the oil is flowing we may ignore some of the aspects that concern the united states and the human rights community at large but this appears to be a very high interest just to give you a quick look this is a copy of a national newspaper it's devoted its editorial page to that and i should point out it even has made an effort to reach out to the saudis for some sort of explanation but one was not provided to me how can i thank you very much. and it's going to not just a. new do we know when the forty's will enter the saudi embassy. well nothing has been officially announced they could end tonight they could enter
7:07 pm
tomorrow they could enter at any other stage i think they will be keen however to show that they are taking this investigation seriously the media is camped out here you know turkish an international media everyone looking for something concrete some kind of evidence because of course these are very very serious allegations you know a lot of talk about the investigation talking a fifteen saudi officials that landed here in two separate planes talking about following the diplomatic cars black cars that left this consulate who was inside them what were they carrying but it is very very thin on facts in evidence lauren this is something that everyone is waiting for with the only thing we can say for certain and of course that was also confirmed in that still that the washington post published showing entering through the door behind me into the saudi arabian consulate seven days ago he hasn't been seen or heard from since that's the only thing that we are absolutely sure about so it changed a little bit to speculation about what might have happened is there anything that we do know did happen that was staged. well that what i just
7:08 pm
outlined is what we know exactly happened as what happened once he went through those doors is you know we've been talking to separate sources some will tell you they are certain that he was killed others say that perhaps there was some kind of interrogation that went on because of course he has been critical of the current administration in the riyadh particularly the crown prince how many bin and others will tell you that perhaps he was so-called kidnapped bundled out and taken to saudi arabia nothing is clear it is also very loaded is politically loaded when you look at the players in this situation the current geopolitical situation when it comes to saudi arabia turkey egypt u.a.e. and others so i think very very interesting to see also the how they do. media reporting this i think we have to keep reminding everyone that it really comes down to evidence and the fact is that he has been missing for several days seven days he has disappeared whether he's been killed inside that building or not i think still
7:09 pm
is something that we cannot confirm this but no evidence presented but also the saudis never showed him leaving that building either stephanie decker thank you very much indeed. the u.s. ambassador to the united nations nikki haley has announced she's resigning she's the latest in a long line of high profile departures from childhood ministration and he says she's taking time out from public office. i don't have anything set on where i'm going to go i think that the main thing was i was governor first six years and we dealt with a hurricane a thousand year flood a church shooting a school shooting there was a lot and then to come in and do two years of russia and iran and north korea it's been eight years of intense time and i'm a believer in term limits i think you have to be selfless enough to know when you step aside and allow someone else to do the job so thank you mr president it's been
7:10 pm
an honor of a lifetime and i will say this for all of you that are going to ask about twenty twenty no i'm not running for two thousand and twenty and i can tell you sure what i'll be doing is campaigning for this one but she's done a fantastic job and we've done a fantastic job together we've solved a lot of problems or we're in the process of solving a lot of problems at the beginning north korea was a massive problem and now we're moving along it's building along really nicely i can speak for secretary of state mike peo he thinks the world of nicky and so we're all we're all happy for you in one way both we hate to lose your hope we'll be coming back at some board for the new one just in the maybe a different capacity you could there be a big. white house and joins us live now from the united nations at what how much of a shock has this resignation been. well it was a shock to the media to announcement offer to within the united nations the fact
7:11 pm
that it came out in this way the fact that president trump hurriedly organize that news conference very clearly a president trying trying to get ahead of the news coming out it was leaked it would appear she making clear nikki haley that is that she would only be leaving at the end of the year president trump making clear that he knew months before there has been speculation within the united nations about nikki haley's future particularly in the light of changes in the trump administration in recent months when ricks to listen was secretary of state nikki haley had a completely free hand here she liaise directly with the white house she never went through state department at all that changed when my pump aoe came into state department it changed even more when john bolton a former u.n. ambassador took over as national security adviser so certainly nikki haley's area of operation may have seemed to have a shrunk within recent months with those two other points being made but once got
7:12 pm
to remember too is that nikki haley had a seat on the national security council this is very rare for a u.n. ambassador to have and just a sign of how much president trump respected her and how much reliance he placed on her on forging his administration's foreign policy which she has been doing through the united nations and what happens now. well we know now that she will be in her place until the end of the month president trump saying that he will select a new ambassador within the next three to four weeks but certainly the u.n. doesn't like surprises most diplomats now are used to nikki haley some may fundamentally disagree with her on policy issues but no ambassador opposed to her certainly she has great respect within the confines of the united nations so for the diplomats here a new u.n. ambassador means a new set of relationships having to be forged picking your way through the policy
7:13 pm
of the trumpet ministration which at times has some u.n. members believe threatens a very foundation of the united nations so it is a period of uncertainty nikki haley regardless of what diplomats thought about her policies of the administration they did have respect now are they going to deal with an unknown entity in the weeks ahead mike hanna thank you very much zimbabwe's president emerson one god says a new tax on banks transactions is a painful but necessary measure to revive the economy levy is led to a public outcry and the reemergence of food and fuel queues and fears of shortages are much faster has more from harare. it's perhaps another signs the economy may take a long time to recover some people have been lining up since saturday to philip because the central bank governor says fuel shortages are because of the introduction of
7:14 pm
a two percent tax on bad transactions that means products now cost more and suppliers are buying less it's little shortages and many disappointed customers it's up to a very very disappointing because everything is at a standstill i'm going to do any business you can do anything groups in the world we can grow fruit the worsening economic crisis is compounded by a critical shortage of cash the last time lines were long was back in two thousand and eight some people would sleep in their cars for days hoping to get fuel government officials are telling zimbabweans not to panic but some people say they are worried. in some places feel has started arriving but it's still not enough. others are stocking up on groceries these days bread is in short supply and usually doesn't last long on the shelves in some stores customers are limited to two items

per person to prevent hoarding and panic buying. stock or next month before even the corner and pressure. of your person should change with people uncertain of the future. certainties of. very big pressure inclusions prices a tripled in just a few days it's a question of increasing capacities it's a question of my future as my featuring more feelable shelves because it's just a sage in demand. is there some speculation that's causing some panic buying but again these things are under control they will be no shortage. but increasing production needs foreign currency us dollars the banks say they don't have enough of some importers buy dollars on the black market at a premium sums of worry the could be more frustration and hardship before things get better. al-jazeera had. so to come on the program south africa's under pressure

finance minister steps down the latest from johannesburg to us. and the whole government faces up to a water crisis with a quarter of the population lacking basic access to water. and we've got plenty of rain over the southeastern parts of china at the moment actually is stretching up from what's going on in the bay of bengal you can see it here working its way up through the southwest deposits and then all the way up to shanghai we're seeing some fairly hefty downpours out of this but it's breaking up a little bit as we head through the next few days and still some heavy rain for wednesday still a fair amount of cloud for shanghai as well and then the system breaks up as it works its way southward say then we'll just see a few showers perhaps around the coast towards the north and staying dry for us on

thursday with a top temperature of twenty two and as we head across to woods india well we've got plenty of to talk about here because just to the east of us in the bay of bengal we have one storm developing and we already have another one to the west this one is making its way towards parts of oman and yemen certainly looks like it's going to give us a lot of flooding here the other system well that's coming ashore in the eastern parts of india so that's where we'll see the flooding here and very very strong winds as well it will gradually disintegrate as it drifts its way northward but still giving some very heavy rain that could get flooding as we head through thursday to the west about a good deal of cloud at the moment but generally speaking a good deal of dry weather as well new delhi should be dry too with at thirty three . she's seven years old she's a. she's cool and had best friend. codd

the saudi consulate in istanbul last tuesday turkish officials believe he was murdered there saudi arabia allegations are baseless. the u.s. ambassador to the united nations nikki haley has announced she's resigning because she wants to take time out of public office she's a shift in a long line of high profile departures from the trump administration. as zimbabwe's president. says a new tax on banks transactions is a painful but necessary measure to revive the economy and that he has led to a public outcry and the reemergence of queues for food and fuel. and investigative websites is uncovered the real identity of the second suspect in the stalls report case pending kat says russian military doctor alexander miskin traveled to the city in march under a different name when former russian spy service broke up script of his daughter and urged the reports. if people are trying to murder you then perhaps you can take

corruption let's get more from famine in miller who's in johannesburg for us as the resignation come about a matter. well this all came about during the last week oftentimes and then a testified at a state capture inquiry and as you mentioned they're looking into the relationship between high profile politicians and authorities here in south africa with the family previously and then it had said that he had never met with a good target only bumped into them in passing at public events and now he revealed that he in fact had visit the visited them at their home or now for many south africans those have brought into question just how far this relationship went even though nearly has generally been a well respected is credible has been considered of high integrity but now there's a lot of uncertainty i suppose around just what happened between himself and the group does of course opposition parties many south africans calling for his

resignation while on the other hand they're also bodies of africans who who will still support the finance minister considering that this is the man who saved south africa from a potentially disastrous nuclear deal a few years ago and so the president of course a finding himself between a rock and a hard place in low in knowing that he either had to get rid of this minister or or accept his his resignation but of course wanting to appear decisive a firm hand and ultimately accepting. rizieq nation earlier today and kind of reaction has there been. well so far many south africans have reacted positively to his resignation saying it was the right thing to do of course immediately after his testimony at that commission of inquiry he apologized to south africans saying that it was an error of judgment he should never have met with the gupta brothers specifically outside of the ministry of finance and that he had acted poorly i mean is of african story of course to lose

such a minister with such experience but there is some consolation in that he's been replaced by tito on but when he has so far the chamber of commerce young south africa has said that this is a fine appointment that this is a an individual who has a good history it terms of labor and business so let us know that every consult consoled by the fact that no one has been replaced by somebody that is equally respected but of course what is concerning is that this is the fix change within the finance ministry in just three years and it's been quite controversial over the times of course of africa's looking for policy certainty especially given that so that africa is now in a technical recession and really going through difficult economic times are in a minute thank you very much indeed a suicide bomber has killed an opposition politician in afghanistan's helmand province salim mohammad attracts are and seven others were killed in the explosion during a meeting at his home in lashkar on monday the taliban issued
