5:00 pm
al-jazeera. and. the investigation into the suspected killing of the saudi journalist she turns to the residence of the saudi consul general in istanbul. again un-p.c. you're watching out of syria life for my headquarters here in doha also coming up the u.s. secretary of state arrives in riyadh for a meeting with the saudi king after president trump speaks of rube killers. ignoring a plea for mercy from the red cross has killed
5:01 pm
a second son was kidnapped seven months ago in one area. i mean just it whitens within the orthodox church russia announces it's going it alone because of the dispute over ukraine. turkish investigators are expected to search the residence of the saudi consul general in the coming few hours as they try to zero in on who is behind the suspected killing of jamal khashoggi it's two weeks since the saudi journalist was last seen entering his country's consulate in istanbul al jazeera has been told that forensic experts found evidence he was killed inside the nearby consulate building investigators spent more than twelve hours searching it into tuesday morning the u.s. secretary of state's mike pompei o is now in riyadh he first met king solomon before sitting down with the crown prince mohammed bin sultan on the washington
5:02 pm
post is reporting that u.s. intelligence services intercepted evidence which shows the crown prince personally ordered an operation to detain donald trump has talked of killers and media reports say the saudis are considering a statement saying he was killed when an interrogation went wrong all this is the un's human rights chief calls for the lifting of diplomatic immunity for saudi consular staff to allow a full investigation. in view of the seriousness of the situation surrounding the disappearance of mystical shortly the high commissioner believes the inviolability or immunity of the relevant premises and officials bestowed by treaties such as the one thousand nine hundred sixty three vienna convention on consular relations should be waived immediately. under international law both of force disappearance and an extrajudicial killing are very serious crimes
5:03 pm
and immunity should not be used to impede investigations into what happened and who was responsible in a moment we'll go live to kimberly hellcat in washington d.c. for more details emerging from there first let's go to the consulate building in istanbul and talk to our correspondent jamal el sheil we're getting this word out of riyadh everyone saying we should have an open transparent investigation jamal in terms of people going into that building behind you we're not seeing much of anything approaching a thorough open transparent investigation. no we're not peter i mean where you are getting these different statements that are coming from different bodies or even different personalities we even heard turkish president one reference to some of the initial findings that the investigating team the turkish one at least were able to substantiate or stubbornness after entering the building behind me whereby there was some toxic substances used to maybe tamper
5:04 pm
with or clean parts of the crime scene possibly even painted over is what we heard the president reference to but obviously al jazeera was told by the attorney general's office leads on monday after his team had entered the building that the forensic experts had managed as you mentioned earlier to find evidence which further their belief and conclusion. that she was murdered in sight but the investigation if we can call it that really is still ongoing there are still several sites of interest that the security forces ones and they include as you mentioned there the consul journals home as well as cars and vehicles that are registered through the diplomatic mission to do that however obviously they need the approval of the saudis and obviously we heard the united nations saying that the vienna convention which stipulates that the saudis need to give approval should be wavered we understand that they will be allowed to enter the home of the consul
5:05 pm
general and maybe it's because the turks have so far maybe not been as aggressive as others in the international community demanding that the saudis corporates in such a way here is the latest statement from the foreign minister of turkey. and wish us ill and. there is nothing new yet with regards to the investigation and the saudi consulate and as well we all know when to enter the saudi consulate to get some paperwork for himself but at the moment the most important thing for us is to find out what happened to khashoggi of course we will carry out necessary investigations in interviews about this is very important for us on the other hand mr pompei i stated that he would like to come to ankara and we welcome him as always we do for our allies from the us and it is important for us the stance they have taken on the disappearance of jamal khashoggi as well as the stance against yes they are doing
5:06 pm
or thirty's handling of this issue. and taking us into the diplomatic arena of the diplomatic consequences of this ongoing saga jamaal i guess the next staging post is what mr pompei says to the turkish leadership be the conversations he we think is still having in riyadh. well i mean it's going to be very interesting to see how this meeting between i and turkish officials is going to unfold. it seems that the u.s. is obviously they've say they're interested in finding trying to get to the bottom of this but it also appears to be that the u.s. is maybe trying to position itself as playing some sort of guarantee to a role in any agreements or settlements that will be reached between the charts i'm the united. kingdom of saudi arabia and obviously as far as the turks are
5:07 pm
concerned the u.s. is a close ally but it's very peculiar to understand the natural role would involve the united states in a situation whereby it was a saudi citizen who was murdered in the saudi consulate but inside turkey obviously there is a u.s. connection in that she was a green card holder he did write for the washington post but even we heard the president of the united states trying to kind of diminish that significance in one of his statements so would appear that the u.s. is probably positioning itself more so as some sort of guarantor to ensure that any diplomatic fallout dozens kind of creates ripple effects particularly considering as we've seen the impact it's had on the saudi economy particularly considering the huge amounts of investments donald trump and ministration has made not just inside arabia but in the persona of crown prince mohammed bin sultan who many believe is responsible for the assassination or at least issuing the order of the
5:08 pm
assassination of john so we will wait and see what kind of reception marc compare was given here in turkey whether there will be public statements that will be made there was even an inclination just very quickly here peter when donald trump spoke late on monday where he said possibly pompei would meets with both the saudis on the. works together he can sit out some point so it would be very interesting to see how the u.s. is role will play out in the next couple of days jamal thanks very much kimberly joins us from. washington kimberly without these comments from lindsey graham just put those in context for us how problematic is that for donald trump. certainly increases the pressure on the white house to it is no secret that the movement is inside the u.s. congress continually and increasingly is questioning the claims to take hillary by the crown prince mohammed bin cell that that in fact he had no knowledge or any involvement in the disappearance of jim. and that is exactly what is being
5:09 pm
questioned by lindsey graham as he spoke on the domestic news program fox news take a listen well i know this nothing happens in saudi arabia without knowing who's india he's the thirty three year old crown prince who jumped over other people he's the son of the existing king and i think he's in a bad track i can never do business with saudi arabia again until we get this behind this and what does that mean it means i'm not going back to saudi arabia as long as this guy is in charge so you're still in the crown prince has to leave this up to them but i'm not going to i'm in their biggest offender on the floor of the united states and this guy is a wrecking ball he had discovered murdered in a consulate in turkey and to expect me to ignore and feel used and abused i was on the floor every time defending saudi arabia closers a good ally there's a difference between a country and an individual the n.b.s. figure is to me toxic he can never be
5:10 pm
a world leader on the world stage what does the president do thankless up to the pros but what i would do i know what i'm going to do will sanction the hell out of saudi arabia you know we deal with bad people all the time but this is in our face i feel personally offended they have nothing but contempt for us why would you put a guy like me and the president in this box after all the president has done this guy. gotta go sorry but if you're listening there are a lot of good people you can choose but m.b.'s his tainted your country and tainted himself i heard it so clearly kimberly lindsey graham knows how to work an audience and he did it on fox news so he knows donald trump's going to see that and he will react to that i don't think he's reacted to it yet on twitter but he presumably will react to it sometime in the next hour or so. it's unclear whether or not the president has seen that interview but he has reacted in the last hour on twitter given the fact that the spotlight on the white house the relationship between the trumpet ministration for example the crown prince and cushion of the crown prince
5:11 pm
one notably saying he had his pocket at one point something widely reported the u.s. president donald trump is tweeted for the record i have no financial interest in saudi arabia or russia for that matter any suggestion i have is just more fake news we should put this into context for our viewers. has had some interest in saudi arabia that didn't just start when he was president was trying to maintain arms sales to prevent it from going that business us business going to russia or china in fact donald trump as part of campaign reporting in the twenty sixteen u.s. election campaign disclosed that he had eight businesses in saudi arabia his attorneys saying in fact that those have now ceased to exist but he's also on record as saying he loves saudi arabia he likes doing business with them so this is certainly a complicated for the president and as you heard there from lindsey graham the congress is not too concerned about donald trump's business ties to saudi arabia in fact we know not just from lindsey graham but also from the democratic senator from
5:12 pm
connecticut who has an opinion piece in the washington post today saying in fact that the both democrats and republicans are going to do all they can to stop that relationship to stop and block arms sales they for a long time been uncomfortable with u.s. involvement in saudi in yemen rather that many of those bombs that are dropped on civilians have made in america stamped on them but it's also the actions of the crown prince that they see is increasingly erratic from jailing family members the disappearance of the lebanese prime minister and the feud with qatar the blockade which many in congress have called simply nonsensical anough is enough and i think what you're hearing from lindsey graham although is to a targeted republican audience is the consensus of a growing number of members of congress both republican and democrat if this is. terry state kimberly might bump a.o. i mean he's having to tread a very subtle line here surely and avoid or just ignore unsubtle aspects of the investigation like why were there lie over the fifteen member so-called hit squad
5:13 pm
or as the washington post was calling it a kill squad why were their lies over oh they were just tourists why were there lies over jamal who showed she left the building oh by the way the c.c.t.v. cameras were switched off why were twenty eight local hired staff told to stay away from the building on that particular day because of a big diplomatic event an event that never took place. right and these are the sort of the i've used this phrase a few times in the last week i'm comfortable truth the world knows the world's watching in real time and we're also watching in real time what appears to be an effort by the saudi government to kind of scramble what we're hearing widely reported here in the united states is that we are expecting a statement imminently whether that's hours or days is unclear but a statement that will essentially contract it contradicts the initial statements made that they had no knowledge of the disappearance of the potential murder here
5:14 pm
that we're talking about of the missing journalist in fact what we're hearing now that's going to be released is that it will be a statement saying that essentially this was an interrogation gone wrong the intent was actually to doctor some sort of rendition and that the second plan as part of the statement will be that in fact those that were responsible for the death of jim will in fact be held accountable that those next steps will be pending an investigation the conclusion between saudi arabia and turkey so you used to see a wiggle room or an effort to wiggle out of the again the uncomfortable truth and we've noted very quickly peter with those readouts coming out from the secretary of state when he met with not only the crown prince but the foreign minister and king solomon that they were very neutral almost benign in the language essentially reiterating the concern about the disappearance and again calling for the need for a thorough and transparent and timely investigation but again leaving an awful lot of gaps in that statement and terms of the complicity and what happens next so when
5:15 pm
mr paul talks to donald trump presumably on the plane when he's flying from to istanbul is the reality of this that the state department will have to say to the turkish leadership you must do on the highest level president. look you've got to go with this is transparent investigation but we all know it will just be us being seen to have an investigation we won't really difficult questions because there have been people in the cleaning the buildings literally perhaps allegedly cleaning away the evidence. i think the american public is half expecting that that will be the case that diplomatic language is often about what isn't said versus what is said and so i can tell you that you know american voters are watching this carefully we have an important congressional election coming up in twenty one days and the american voters are watching carefully how the trumpet ministration
5:16 pm
responds to this but the top administration well it may want to play a delicate or fast and loose with the facts in order to allow the saudis to save face as we heard from lindsey graham moments ago at the congress is not going to stand by and allow that and this is where the co-equal branches of government the white house and the congress is very important because well donald trump may be able to act in that matter the congress will not allow to stand they have as much power as he does and they have the power particularly in the senate to utilize that sort of economic arm of the united states to control the purse strings lock arms sales and also to sanction if they feel it is appropriate it certainly sounds from lindsey graham they're headed in that direction an amazingly complex story of diplomacy from your angle kimberly thanks so much on packing it for us so we will talk to you later. plenty more still to come here on al-jazeera. this is the time for calm heads to prevail. britain's prime minister tries to reassure the country
5:17 pm
about brecht despite a breakdown in talks with the european union. i once again welcome saw the look at the international for costs the weather's not looking too bad across much of china over the next couple of days southern parts start with the southwest missouri a little bit of wet weather little further north up towards the cloud and rain in place here from time to time but for much of central and eastern china should be lousy draw just not as into the southeast and cool wet as they look like a rather wet day brightens opposite go on into thursday twenty six celsius there for hong kong less that wetter weather across the southwest in kona down towards the gulf of tonkin showers and long spells of rain too into southern parts of india maybe into salonica as well but for much of central and northern india it is set
5:18 pm
we'll see temperatures starting to notch up as well here as we go on through the next couple days into the mid thirty's for not poor and also for new delhi further south as that wetter weather that hyderabad right down into a similar picture across carola tom and others to go on through stable hopefully the rain not quite as intense say some intense rainfall recently into southern parts of the arabian peninsula just around the monuments border of course with our tropical system making its way through this is the outside lane still bringing some splashes of rain him that a bit of wet weather too not too far from us here in qatar. and then the sun. and the fuss in the country killing the founder of the maids in the car. if you got the lead to mechanic watch you will see.
5:19 pm
my night. cannot think of. my nigerian women i strongly need. my nigerian on al-jazeera. with al-jazeera with our continuing coverage of what's going on in turkey and of course the consequences of the main aspects of our story for you turkish investigators are expected to enter the home of the saudi arabian consul general in istanbul to search for clues in the disappearance of the saudi journalist jamal khashoggi he hasn't been seen since entering the saudi consulate two weeks ago
5:20 pm
al-jazeera has learned forensic experts found evidence he was killed inside the consulate building. the u.s. secretary of state mike pompei or has met the saudi crown prince mohammed bin cell man in riyadh the washington post newspaper is reporting u.s. officials knew the crown prince ordered the operation to lure mr shoji to saudi arabia from his home in virginia to pump a zero is expected to travel to istanbul for further meetings in the coming hours. the u.n. human rights chief is calling for the lifting of diplomatic immunity for certain consular staff to allow a full investigation he wants to waive the vienna convention which bars known consular staff from diplomatic compounds and n.b.c. this. let's go back to the center ground zero of this story the consulate building and the home of the consul general our
5:21 pm
correspondent jamal el sheil is there we're getting some developments on this tell us what's going on. yes well we've just learned peter that the consul general that's how the consul general has actually left his fro now lots of turkey we understand on the saudi airlines flights which has just the parts that from sarky another. interesting loss for words here in terms of twists to these developments he is somebody who the police had said that they were interested to speak to he is somebody obviously at the center of this being the person in charge of the diplomatic mission in istanbul at least and the most senior saudi official who was present when jamal khashoggi answered we understand from people who had spoken to. before he had entered that actually the
5:22 pm
consul general himself and personally. told jamal that they would nothing nothing would happen to him and essentially had given him a tacit government see that he would be ok to come to look consulates but despite all of this now he has left the country obviously we had earlier heard peter from the target foreign minister saying that there was no travel by and that there were no going to essentially ignore the geneva or rather vienna convention. gives diplomatic immunity to sort of stuff here this despite the fact that the united nations had said that this should be waiver or waived rather. should not impede investigations into the. missing or rather into the killing of jazz it is believed it seems maybe now that we understand the turkish investigators are going to enter his home so literally just
5:23 pm
a couple of hours before they're expected to enter his home the consul general has decided to leave to fleet. maybe make way for the investigators but however it's going to be phrased by different media and different kind of state apparatus is around the world the reality is that this man who is at the center of this investigation is no longer in sarky. will come back and when we get any more details on that of cool stay close let's talk to a senior. tical analyst mo on the sciara mo and so it looks like the consul general decided consul general is on a plane as we speak from istanbul to riyadh reportedly we've got mike pump am saying he's had a conversation with the crown prince mohammed bin salma they both agreed we will have an open transparent investigation donald trump the u.s. president talking about killers in your mind where are we with this
5:24 pm
well let me use some of our viewers favorite metaphor we are now in fourth gear in terms of the blow back to work saudi arabia because of its actions we started with the first gear when we first learned about the disappearance of the turks said they had ordered your recording of his killing with american media responding with alarm then we entered into second gear when president tom got involved as well as european leaders asking for answers from the saudis and this becoming an international crime scene then we enter third gear where the turks say he's definitely been murdered and the saudis allegedly preparing a report to admit the murder and i think now as i said we are in fourth gear why are we in fourth gear. because watching the secretary of state having to go to saudi arabia to look into this personally rather than solve it on the phone and
5:25 pm
having the republican leader of the u.s. senate say three things one. how much when someone is responsible for the killing of. two he would never go back to saudi arabia as long as this man is in charge and he must go and three that the. american congress will probably slap saudi arabia with with sanctions if nothing gives from from the kingdom so here we are now in the fourth stage in fourth gear the blowback continues against the saudis and we just wait now to see how trump the american president will wrap it up would he give the saudis carte blanche to canoe to do what they have done or will this really mean a change of leadership in the kingdom and an admission of guilt how do they fuel
5:26 pm
all who does the fueling to get this process up into fifty we've seen the economy suffer in the past what forty eight hours or so we've seen high profile companies high profile individuals pull out of that investment initiative conference that is ongoing in riyadh we've seen those comments from lindsey graham that you're talking about we've seen the british foreign secretary mr hunt saying we've got to do friends we've got to do business with our international friends in an atmosphere of trust and openness and yet we're being told at the same time the investigation will be open transparent it will happen the consul generals on the plane they've been cleaning the alleged crime scene. yes and in the same time apparently according to the turkish president they had painted over some of the residuals from the crime scene which is really even in the worst of. mystery
5:27 pm
novels you don't do something i want perhaps actually you do but look i mean really what i've been saying now for the last several days is you need to look at the tread at the victory of this. revolving door unraveling mystery if you look at that at the at the at the trajectory you would conclude what i concluded over the last week that something's got to give from the saudis and this is not just. coming up with the truth and perhaps even admission of crime but the responsibility where does the buck stops the stop with the crown prince below him or above him my sense is as we've heard again lindsey graham and so on and so forth is that no one is taking this seriously and not only no one is taking the soul of the explanation seriously or the american about rogue elements no one is accepting it as a pretext for everyone to go to do business as usual with saudi arabia either so
5:28 pm
this means that from now on as we perhaps go to fifth gear rather than third gear in this blowback the already a way for the saudis out of this thing is for mohammed inside man to take responsibility as we heard the american official state if mohammed was that a man takes responsibility for what happened in istanbul then the beginning of the regime you should the beginning the beginning of a solution of this debacle will start my sense is this will be a nightmare for soul eurabia for some time to come. ok that's a nightmare but if we're talking here about something's got to give a kid a crown prince's move sideways who they replace him with or does the king sell man come back into the fold more than he's come into the fold just in the past week because when mom had been some man got the job the line of accession to the top job literally was changed because for people who don't know it it used to go sideways
5:29 pm
into used to go from brother to brother and mohammed bin some months critics say look he got rid of the people above him he sidelined them he got rid of the people below him as well and he also got rid of those regional leaders in serbia arabia that might have presented him with something of a threat in the years to come i mean there's nobody else's name in the frame surely apart from king solomon. well look just to be clear this third edition the words the sons are down to the brothers actually started with king abdullah king solomon's predecessor because all the brothers of god an older and consult is himself in his late seventy's and sick so it was clear that this is going to have to start go into the descendants then horizontally to the brothers that's one to the problem is that in two thousand and fifteen when king solomon took over it was already pronounced that haven't been naive who was
5:30 pm
originally the minister of interior would be crown prince and he was assigned crown prince and everyone understood that to be the case because he's was a senior and he was beloved by the united states because he was cool approaches to them in terms of counter counter terrorism in terms of intelligence cooperation and so on so forth but as we all know by now between two thousand and fifteen and two thousand and seventeen the ambitious crown crown crown prince mohammed bin laden none basically pushed his senior muhammad bin nayef aside and took over for him as company a crown prince with the blessing of his father king solomon so now people are saying look this apparently was all warm which shouldn't have interested the kingdom or its five important facets the economy in the military the intelligence that religious establishment and or ill with this young inexperienced man so what do we do what we all know that i am against a man is the senior of a man his brother from the third wife of king solomon but there are many many other
5:31 pm
of among his siblings that could be and yet some americans are already talking about the possibility of them how mad the naive who was the head of in the interior who basically was the head of the intelligence probably should be brought back in as crown prince and basically undo that the fact to coup against him by the crown crown prince and his father is this practical at this point in time i honestly cannot tell you. from here in london because the the the box as it were it is quite closed within the family in so we're going to be out it's very hard to tell we can't make predictions about it nor that won't necessarily be very. practical words so i would say that there is a choice kingside mind can still he is in his complete health i mean complete mind how if any way he could could get it all until he finds a successor well that may not start talking about democracy or accountability or anything like that but certainly within the family as an instagram told us there
5:32 pm
are many capable people to take over from crown prince muhammad and so much mo and thank you very much we'll talk to you later i'm sure let's just show you the latest live shot coming to us from outside those two buildings that we've been focusing in on over the past two weeks the saudi consul general office there and just to get you right up to date with what's going on in the arena of diplomacy the u.s. secretary of state's mike pompei oh is just about to in the next few hours or so leave as he heads for is stan bull he's agreed with the crown prince mohammed bin solomon that has to be an open honest and transparent investigation we're waiting to see that joint investigative team going through the gates you're looking at right now kemal more with the news grid in about half an hour between now and then it's the stream. getting to the heart of the matter the three big challenges facing human prime in the twenty first century they are nuclear war climate change and
5:33 pm
technological disruption facing realities whatever is there the fear is not in me it is in the people of uganda hear their story on talk to hell jazeera. i am for me ok on your in the stream today will the me two movement change india where hear from women speaking out against sexual harassment there and you can join in of course the conversation live on you tube and also via twitter. in india women are taking to social media to speak out against sexual harassment that they've experienced in the media and entertainment industries when accused of inappropriate behavior have included bollywood stars singers and even a former newspaper editor who is now the country's junior foreign.
