right now it's a very hard profile in much fiction. al-jazeera investigation cricket match fixing the phone. turkish investigators to search the saudi consul general's residence in the case of missing journalists the president says they're looking into toxic materials that u.s. secretary of state meets the saudi king and crown prince's media reports suggest they may have made a shrug was killed at the consulate. hello i'm barbara starr you're watching al-jazeera life from london also coming up on the program nigeria's government says it's shocked and saddened by the killing of
7:01 pm
a second health worker kidnapped by boko haram and this he o.p.'s prime minister gives half is cabinet posts to women and creates a peace ministry to tackle a wave of ethnic violence. turkish investigators are due to search the residence of the saudi consul general in istanbul as they try to find out what happened to the missing journalist. the saudi consul general has already left istanbul for riyadh on monday turkish investigators spent twelve hours combing through the saudi consulate which ashaji was last seen entering two weeks ago now al jazeera has been told that forensic experts have found evidence that he was killed inside the building. right now as you are aware i thought result of our intense contacts the search
7:02 pm
process in the consulate ha started yesterday there was an intense process until morning and it we continue my hope is that we can reach conclusions that we give us a reasonable opinion as soon as possible the investigation is looking into many things such as toxic materials and those materials being removed by painting them over. meanwhile the un is calling for the lifting of diplomatic immunity for saudi consulate staff to allow full investigation in view of the seriousness of the situation surrounding the disappearance of mystical shortly the high commissioner believes the inviolability or immunity of the relevant premises and officials bestowed by treaties such as the one thousand nine hundred sixty three vienna convention on consular relations should be waived immediately. under international law both of force disappearance and an extrajudicial killing
7:03 pm
are very serious crimes and immunity should not be used to impede investigations into what happened and who was responsible. well pressure of course is continuing to grow in saudi arabia to explain what happened to her the u.s. secretary of state mike compel meanwhile has been holding meetings with the saudi royal family in riyadh he met king solomon as well as the crown prince mohammed bin someone both countries have agreed on the importance of a thorough and transparent investigation from peo is due to travel to turkey on wednesday well let's bring in jim my little show yalom is outside the saudi consulate in istanbul jamal a lot of developments here let's start with this with the turkish investigators due to enter the consul general residence in istanbul any time now that's really what we are expecting will of course of bring the pictures as soon as we get them but just explain to us why the residents of the saudi consul general is key in all of
7:04 pm
this. well it's key because aside from it being the home of the most senior saudi diplomat in istanbul and the second most senior in turkey as a whole v.c. off to the ambassador the turkish authorities have already disclosed officially the traffic camera footage which showed vehicles exiting the consulate behind me a couple of hours after she had entered two weeks ago and amongst those vehicle was this black tinted out sadie's van which drove just two hundred meters down the road where the consul general's home is parked up into the garridge there was some movement of an old offloading some things from the van itself and therefore it made it one of those suspect locations that the investigators wanted to access to now we were expecting that this was going to be the next major development in the
7:05 pm
investigation following what's took place late on monday nights when the forensic experts and the attorney general's office answered the building behind me but interestingly enough the major development that's occurred was the consul general decided to up and leave turkey without any prior warning which is bizarre to say the least considering as i say the diplomatic seniority has considering the responsibility that he has in the sense that he was in charge of that mission when jamal khashoggi and turd he was the one who told me that he can come and pick up the paper work directly as several friends have told me personally who had spoken to him prior to him coming here and obviously he is the one who would be responsible for any and turns an exit off a saudi officials to the diplomatic mission now he left just a couple of hours after the turkish foreign minister said that despite the call
7:06 pm
from the united nations to waiver the vienna can. and to get rid of diplomatic immunity in order to get a full transparent and investigation concluded the turkish foreign minister said no you know we're not going to be doing that this saudis are allowed to do you know there's still have that immunity and i guess that was a green light for the consul general to just leave the country. very interesting jim we are of course awaiting for the turkish investigators to search a rive the saudi consul general's residence in istanbul and will cross life's us when that happens or for the moment of all thank you while the show g.'s this appearance is shown on a spotlight on saudi crown prince mohammed bin selman or n.b.s. and he's often known the thirty three year old outmaneuvered his rivals to become heir apparent and de facto leader in july last year he was hailed around the world for economic and social reforms like for example lifting the ban on women driving
7:07 pm
but that was accompanied by a crackdown on the said more than a dozen even women's rights activists who campaigned for the ban to be lifted were themselves of arrested since may he also the tane hundreds of the country's richest people accusing them of corruption and holding them in the luxurious ritz carlton hotel it was the bizarre suspected kidnapping of lebanon's prime minister saad hariri who unexpectedly announced his resignation while in the saudi capital and m.b.a.'s is considered the driving force behind saudi arabia's decision to go to war in yemen in two thousand and fifteen while he was the fence minister since then at least ten thousand people have been killed in the country is now on the brink of famine well earlier republican senator lindsey graham launched a scathing attack on the saudi crown prince while appearing on the show fox and friends. well i know this nothing happens in saudi arabia without knowing this up
7:08 pm
to them but i'm not going to i've been their biggest offender on the floor of the united states and this guy is a wrecking ball he had this guy murdered in a consulate in turkey and to expect me to ignore and feel used and abused i was on the floor every time defending saudi arabia closers a good ally there's a difference between a country and an individual the m.b.'s figure is to me toxic he can never be a world leader on the world stage what does the president do thank this up to the president but what i would do i know what i'm going to do and sanction the hell out of saudi arabia you know we deal with bad people all the time but this is in our face i feel personally offended they have nothing but contempt for us why would you put a guy like me and the president in this box after all the president has done this guy has got to go sorry but if you're listening there are a lot of good people you can choose but m.b.'s is tainted your country and tainted him so well white house correspondent kimberly halkett joins us live now from washington d.c. emily i'm not sure of saudi arabia was listening to that but that fox and friends
7:09 pm
is certainly president trump's allegedly favorite news program so he was probably listening in that's quite a message from someone like lindsey graham who as he says himself has always supported the saudis do we think that donald trump is going to align himself with that line of thinking it'll. certainly we saw briefly the president saying that there would be severe consequences if the allegations regarding the missing journalists are true but since that statement we've seen the president this white house kind of dialing back trying to play both sides if you will and also some sensitivity from the president with regard to accusations insinuations that this white house is particularly cozy with the kingdom in saudi arabia for example not only did donald trump host the crown prince a very warm reception in the oval office earlier this year of course he took his first foreign trip to riyadh and it is certainly there have been ties as well
7:10 pm
between donald trump's son in law jared cushion or and also with the crown prince so donald trump feeling somewhat sensitive tweeted this morning that he wanted to clear the record he says for the record i have no financial interest in saudi arabia or russia for that matter and the suggestion i have is just more fake news but that kind of is contradicted by some of donald trump's own public statements because remember back to the campaign when he announced his candidacy he talked about how much he loved the saudis of doing business with the saudis he likes it when they buy things from him and in fact he had to disclose that he had eight companies within saudi arabia we understand from his lawyer those have since dissolved but certainly he seems to be on the defensive now in terms of the public language the readouts coming out of the secretary of state's meeting with not only the crown prince but also the king and the foreign minister right now they are just reiterating concern on the part of the united states and again calling for a thorough and transparent investigation that is hardly the tough language we're
7:11 pm
hearing from congress where they in turn not just republicans like lindsey graham but also democrats are calling for sanctions at the highest level of the saudi government but also an effort to block the arms sales arms sales rather the existing ones that are already in place in order to send a very strong message that this is a two. point u.s. saudi relationship that could have potentially severe or even economic consequences the un says very much a key issue there between the two countries i can believe how kit at the white house can really for now thank you and for more on all the developments that we have been witnessing we're joined in the studio by al-jazeera senior political analyst one bashara summer when we had kimberly there explaining the you know what's going on in the united states of course at the same time we got mike can pay zero in saudi arabia what have you made of the visit so far and i guess the body language as well as he meets both the king and the crown prince well certainly there's an attempt by the administration to first contain the situation and second
7:12 pm
determine how it's going to be packaged for the american and international public opinion so what's next to it and apparently president tom could not determine that on the phone with king solomon so he had to dispatch his successor of state to see on the ground what's going on now as the president has tweeted he feels insecurity about his position and that's why he's on the defensive saying our you know it's not i don't have an interest and by the way he was always boasting about how the saudis buy from him forty and fifty million dollar apartments in new york so there's a bit of interest there be that as it may i think what's really interesting barbara is dumping on saudi arabia smiling and lindsey graham and the republican leading the senate fuming fuming versus smiling this dichotomy we've seen it before with russia congress and the republican leadership taking a very suspicious very punitive position towards russia for its assess initial
7:13 pm
attempted assassination against its opposite against figures from russia and saudi arabia doing the same there is sort of deep seated hostility towards russia and saudi arabia since the cold war and since nine eleven. but trump tried to repackage this as his best friend putin and his best friend king solomon i think the american establishment is not buying into it it's interesting though because it's almost like the administration of the u.s. has its response before we at least officially know exactly what happened because we still don't have a real official explanation from the saudis speculation yes reports yes but not anything official and now we have the consul general as it was residence is soon to be investigated by by turkish authorities getting on a plane back to reeva mean that doesn't look good look this is you know just been scratching my head the last few days because this is really life imitating fiction
7:14 pm
i don't know if you read mystery novels but this is a thriller of the first degree we have the crime scene we have horror aspects of it and from the from the crime scene we go into chapter one the turks say the saudis are behind the killing the and american media international media response saying this is a scandal then we go into the second chapter american officials european officials say this is terrible we need answers the saudis needs to come up with something and then we go into the third chapter and suddenly we are talking about possibility that there are traces for the murder there are recordings and so on so forth economy starts to fall people boycott the business conference in saudi arabia and so on so forth and now we're going into the fourth chapter well where the senate leadership saying we are not doing business with your people you are basically nobody for us until you change your leaders and so forth and we have the cold still
7:15 pm
general disappearing presumably he should have been questioned now the prosecutor says we might have found evidence of. in his house which means that's also another crime scene not only the consulate but also the consul. house so as the mystery unravels and the saudis are not coming out with the truth and telling the world what would be up and everyone is guessing but as we all guess so your neighbor is coordinated more and more and more and i think its economy is going to suffer its credibility is going to suffer its people and leadership will suffer as well yeah i mean a lot of developments certainly and also just to remind viewers we are still waiting for the turkish investigators to search the residence of the saudi consul general in istanbul i think we can see like pictures of that now we will of course bring you the latest on that as it happens for the moment marwan the sheriff thank you. and still to come on the program the demands for a public inquiry
7:16 pm
a year after a multi-state investigative journalist was killed by a bomb planted in her car plus. a great treat to take place besides. you fucked. donald tusk demands concrete proposals for any progress on grex it saying he has no grounds for optimism. well i once again welcome to the look at the international forecast the weather is not looking too bad across much of china over the next couple of days southern parts stand to watch the southwest might see a little bit of wet weather little further north up towards the cloud and rain in place here from time to time but for much of central and eastern china should be largely dry just not as into the southeast in kuwait as they look like
7:17 pm
a rather wet day brightens up as we go on into thursday twenty six celsius there for hong kong is that wetter weather across the southwestern corner down towards the gulf of tonkin showers along the spells of rain too into southern parts of india maybe into salonica as well but for much of central and northern india it is set there we'll see temperatures starting to notch up as well here as we go on through the next couple days into the mid thirty's for not poor and also for new delhi further south is that weather weather that hyderabad right down into a similar picture across carola tom and others who go on through are stable hopefully the rain not quite as intense say some intense rainfall recently into southern parts of the arabian peninsula just around the monuments border of course with our tropical system making its way through this is the outside lane still bringing some splashes of rain him there's a bit of wet weather too not too far from us here in qatar.

for many young adults a coming of age brings greater responsibility. for this young man the responsibility of eight hundred family tradition weighs heavy on his shoulders. the choice. but the decision must be made. part of the viewfinder series. welcome back here's a reminder of the top stories on al-jazeera the saudi consul general in istanbul
7:19 pm
has returned to riyadh turkish investigators prepared to search his residence in their effort to find out what happened to the missing saudi journalist. turkey's president says they're looking for toxic materials he has also raised the possibility the saudi consulate may have been repainted went missing two weeks ago and u.s. secretary of state mike pump a.o.s. talks with the saudi king and crown prince in both countries agreed on the importance of a thorough and transparent investigation. speaking of journalists and then jury it's been exactly a year since a maltese journalist was killed in a bomb attack which targeted her car that. had been investigating corruption in businesses the police and the government her family is the man doing a public inquiry to find out who ordered her death these barker reports now from the maltese capital. dufty khurana go he says death shocked
7:20 pm
a nation to many she was a fearless anti corruption crusader but she was also accused of scathing even defamatory journalism and of being politically partisan on i want to be read blog a year after she was killed in a car bombing the reasons for head death are still unclear. family wants a public inquiry free from all political interference the focus of that inquiry on like the current processes is to look into whether daphne's nice could have been saved so that would mean looking into possible state failure to protect and possible state complicity in the assassination this is where daphne karrada going to see it was killed she left her home in a village just up the hill in a least car the blast was so powerful it's got to parts of the vehicle in surrounding fields some of her remains were found eighty meters away from here this
7:21 pm
isn't the first car bomb in malta they have been six since the start of two thousand and sixteen but it's the first time the victim hasn't been a criminal three men are on trial for murder question surrounding a motive a yet to be answered. kawana claim to have uncovered corruption at the highest levels in a maltese bank the police the government she believed officials were granting residency in passports in return for bribes from shady individuals trying to access the european union. she also linked to maltese politicians including the prime minister joseph with offshore tax havens he denies the allegations. but car want to go he she has family believe there's been a deliberate attempt to control the narrative surrounding her death to make it look like she was investigating criminal gangs alone and not the government the prime minister declined our request for an interview. since carolina police she is dead

colleagues say bolters b.d.'s powerful which is of directly by political parties has lacked an important voice it was nothing like her before and there's been nothing since her bravery i imagine would inspire others in the years to come locally she opened many people's eyes to what. journalism could be this is what's left of a warms large makeshift memorial to the journalist opposite multis law courts it's tended to by activists who say it's regularly torn down even in death they say she continues to be silenced neve barkha al-jazeera valetta malta. european council president donald says he doesn't hold out much hope of a breakthrough and breck said talks because he asians have stalled once again over what should happen with the irish border when northern ireland and the rest of the u.k. leave the e.u. when large britain's prime minister to resign may has

a better cabinet at the sky the status of the talks she says an amicable divorce deal can still be achieved. all don't ask says he is going to ask her to set out concrete proposals on how to break the impasse fortunately the. a report on the state of the negotiations that they go to from michel but you know today as well as just a they should debate in the house of commons gives me no grounds for optimism before tomorrow's who will be on the council on british. side shoot the only source of hope for the you for no. good will and determination on both sides. however for a breakthrough to take place besides a coup in need new fact donald trump has warned honduras he will cut tens of millions of dollars in aid if it doesn't stop a group of about two thousand migrants reaching the u.s.
7:24 pm
border he issued a warning on twitter to his counterpart in honduras that migrants are fleeing poverty and violence in their country headed north on the long journey through guatemala and mexico to the u.s. the armed group boko haram has executed a second the kidnapped aid worker in nigeria a month after one of her colleagues was also murdered the group was there manning the release of imprisoned the members of their organization and had set a deadline but when that passed they killed how well the man who was a nurse with the international committee of the red cross she was among three aid workers were kidnapped seven months ago in borno state amid interest says more now on this from a. the nigerian government up to the last minute had left the girls for negotiations open but he didn't go say clearly what the negotiations or terms of negotiation were and they did not say what they did right and what they did wrong
7:25 pm
the killing of the two aid workers walking for the international committee of the red cross was i would shock to many when the first killing took place in september a lot of nigeria's loss of price because previously the international committee of the red cross facilitated the evacuation of prisoners or captives between the nigerian state and the book was leading to some suggestion that the go between between the two sides that the nigerian state and book is the international committee of the red cross which many of us of the records denied now the nigerian state said that a lot of nigerians actually was hopeful that following the assurances by the nigerian president that the government will do everything possible to ensure the release of all captives. while full full that the incident we saw yesterday may not happen but when it happened a lot of nigerians were disappointed and shocked at the same time. if the o.p.'s
7:26 pm
new cabinet is now a record fifty percent female including the country's first female defense minister the reformist prime minister i.b.m. it has also created a new ministry of peace in a bid to tackle a wave of ethnic violence he said that the citizen to appoint so many female ministers is the first in the history of ethiopia and probably in africa since coming to power in april has introduced a series of reforms transforming is the o.p.'s political landscape and restoring relations with every trade stock or now about this with jordan anderson who's an analyst with the africa country risk team at i.h.s. market thank you so much for joining us here on the al-jazeera ministry for peace sounds great i can't really think of another one of those that maybe another one around the world why has he done it now the key to this is that one of the biggest criticisms that's been made against meds since became prime minister in april is that there's rising insecurity displacement of population and multiple areas across
7:27 pm
ethiopia and this is one of the big criticisms that's being made of his government is that he hasn't really found a way to handle this increasing violence and to bring peace so him introducing a minister naming it minister for peace is him in terms of the message trying to say that he's listening to the people's concerns and that he's addressing them so it's absolutely on message for him another thing that he's done that would be seen as on messages that now i think fifty percent of the cabinet is female i mean he says a first probably for africa but i think arguably one if not the first one of the first vote for the whole world i can think of and many other countries that have that i mean this is great but is it all just cosmetic and it's all fine and well having a ministry for peace and lots of women in government but how is it practically going to help solve the problems of the key practical issue or that the prime minister is trying to solve here is that but in particular by focusing on diversity so by talking about the inclusion of women but also by including more members of the cabinet from some of the peripheral regions. yes of ethiopia regions that
7:28 pm
haven't always been as well represented in government ethnically the prime minister is trying to build support for reform program whereby he also wants to for example diversify ethnically the top ranks of the military and really the point of the new ministry of peace is it's all about bringing the military and the intelligence agencies properly under the control of civilian authorities previously you had governments in ethiopia whereby you had a military that was much more partisan in terms of its leanings at the top and also much less ethnically diverse in the upper ranks prime minister met his reference and to change this and in order to consolidate that civilian and nonpartizan control of the military he's for example restructuring bringing the interior ministry and the intelligence agencies under the minister for peace ok so he's making a lot of changes and i guess i just need a little bit of time more time for it to work but how bad is the situation now when it comes to ethnic violence and i think tensions in ethiopia so for example over the past few weeks we've seen violence in a western region of ethiopia been
7:29 pm
a shango camillus which is displaced over seventy thousand people also some of those people are being displaced surrounded me a region in terms of ethiopia wide over a million people have been displaced by violence in the past year it may be as high as two million depending on the source that you are taking it from so these are very serious issues and it's one of the prime ministers being critiqued by also last week we saw what what was essentially a very short lived mutiny in addis ababa of certain elite forces within the military who came and demanded a meeting with the prime minister themselves to raise their grievances so he also has reasons to be concerned about his control over the military in the security it's i mean briefly if you can other reasons to be optimistic about the future of ethiopia considering everything he's doing oh absolutely so when i say in particular that he's trying to bring in members of the less represented historically parts of the country this is good for their representation for inclusion making them feel part of the country and trying to build a larger national coalition government as opposed to one that's dominated by a particular part of the country this is always been a historical criticism of wade. after wave of ethiopian government is it is
7:30 pm
dominated by one region of the country or by another so by trying to build a more diverse or geographically ethnically diverse cabinet that is a positive development for the country jordan anderson analyst for the africa country risk team at i.h.s. market thank you thank you. time after reminder of the top stories on al-jazeera turkish investigators are due to search the residence of the saudi consul general in istanbul as they try to find out what happened to the missing journalist. the saudi consul general has already left the stumble for riyadh on monday turkish investigators spent twelve hours combing through the saudi consulate which was last seen entering two weeks ago al jazeera has been told that forensic experts have found the evidence that has was killed inside the building. right now as you are well i thought

in large britain's prime minister to resign may has met her cabinet to discuss the status of the talks she says an amicable divorce deal can still be achieved. ok let's go back to our top story now and that is of course the disappearance and presumed killing of jamal khashoggi in istanbul let's bring in jim i'll show you alys outside the saudi consulate in istanbul for us tomorrow we are still waiting for turkish investigators to arrive at the residence of the saudi consul general in in istanbul of the of course the man himself the saudi consul general is proper assumably either in riyadh or on his way to riyadh that doesn't the great does it presumably the investigators wanted to interview him. of course not i mean obviously you know there is the common on the something that if you've got nothing to hide you don't run away in it doesn't look like he's run away because it's not like there's been
7:33 pm
a statement from the saudi foreign ministry saying that they were reporting game they could have maybe played this in a way whereby it was least executed in a better way where they said you know for discussions or to collaborate or to share information or what not but what happened was that literally just hours before prosecutors and investigators and forensic experts were expected to enter the consul general home the consul general decided to get on a flight from stumble and fly to saudi arabia was a saudi flight we understand that's him box on and that took him out of the country we do understand as you mentioned there obviously this is investigation is meant to be a pretty wide one where it's not just the police searching the building behind me the confidence which is the last place that demand officials you will see in. two weeks to the day but they're also looking at other points of interest and also wanting to
