resident but we understand that it is taking place at some point on the white house campus with not only the cia director but also other intelligence officials who have been to saudi arabia as well as turkey the statement from the the director of the now the secretary of state he was the former cia director but pump a zero two state department employees as in fact that this administration is not satisfied with the explanations it's had so far and as a result he wrote in this internal memo we won't be satisfied until the u.s. gets quote perfect clarity on what has transpired so still effort in that information and well that takes place the president of course has taken some measures the revoking of at least twenty one visas of saudi nationals who they suspect are involved in this case this is something that has been applauded by the u.s. congress but at the same time now it is the next step of the congress by the request of the president to take further action whether it's the blocking of arms sales

whether it is any sort of punitive measure in terms of sanctions the highest level of the saudi government that is unclear and may be on hold for some time given the fact that we have congressional elections coming up on november sixth the congress is in recess so it could take some time after that very potentially pivotal election but what i can tell you is this is not sitting well with the american public has been focused on this case it isn't focus on the president's reactions that they feel overwhelmingly have been too cautious in fact when you speak to ordinary americans according to the latest poll numbers thirty seven percent of republicans believe the president has been too soft and saudi arabia when you ask democrats that question seventy eight percent believe the president has not gone far enough and when asked about the saudi relationship the u.s. saudi relationship that the president keeps saying is so pivotal is so strategic important to ordinary americans particularly when it comes to jobs americans not sharing the. public opinion in fact most seeing the relationship as unfriendly some

even characterizing saudi arabia as america's enemy so this is what the president now has to sort out as he gets that intelligence brief because again the president not satisfied with the explanations that have been given by saudi arabia so far. in washington thank you we'll move to some other news developing in the last few hours security now being stepped up in new york after a string of attempted bombings it would seem in the u.s. explosive devices and other suspicious packages targeted prominent democratic politicians and the cable news network c.n.n. they were found at the heart of hillary and bill clinton as well as billionaire george soros the secret service says a suspicious package intended for former president barack obama was intercepted when new york's police commissioner says unless a contending white powder was also sent with the explosive device to the c.n.n. time one of building responding officers identified it the vice that appeared to be a live explosive device that might be
2:03 am
a bomb squad responded security device and removed it for investigation additionally there was an envelope containing white powder that was discovered as part of that original packaging and were in the middle of investigating that right now yairi has been described to dogs and equipment and found no additional threats besides the white powder and working with all the law enforcement partners we responded quickly just your the scene. and we've also heard from new york mayor bill de blasio who condemned the mail bombs as an attempt to intimidate the media and us for the to complete it. what we saw here today was the effort to terrorize is clearly is an act of terror attempting to undermine our free press and leaders of this country through acts of violence i want to make very clear that the people of new york city will not be intimidated. that we are going to go about our lives undeterred because the very concept of terrorism is
2:04 am
to change us so we will not allow that to happen. here is one of the would be recipients of these packages hillary clinton called the troubling time for the us. we are fine thanks to the men and women of the secret service. who intercepted. the package addressed to us long before it me its way to our home every day we are grateful for their service and commitment and obviously never say never more than today. but it is a troubling time isn't it. and it's a time of deep. divisions. and we have to do everything we can to bring our country together.
2:05 am
we also have to elect candidates who will try to do the same. things in our washington bureau now but she had not long ago you actually asked at the scene of one of these suspected bomb sell us about. yeah actually before i get to the just the last few minutes we can with another a suspicious package has been reported this time it was addressed to the op in the manhattan offices of the governor of new york andrew cuomo speaking at a press conference saying he did receive a package even though his own spokesperson denied denied receiving a package just a few hours ago but so that's yet another package that seems to have been addressed or seems to be received by a liberal politician in the united states i was at the outside the obama residence just an hour ago or so the secret service says that there was never any danger of barack obama or hillary clinton for that matter receiving these packages they were detected immediately as potential explosive devices during the routine screening of
2:06 am
the mail that goes to the clinton residence on the obama residence which in fact happens off site somewhere away from their residences so no danger that these would ever have actually arrived at the intended recipients addresses. they all they're saying breslow enforcement officials are being quoted as saying they are suspicious they are connecting these two devices at least with the device that was sent to liberal billion george soros on monday that was a something that was made to resemble a pipe bomb and we'll try to figure out whether these these various devices are in fact explosive devices or at least or of it made up to resemble pipe bombs similarly with the device that was sent to c.n.n. the c.n.n. or c.n.n. reporter that was made to resemble a pipe bomb as as well so there are connections being made between all of these devices targeting both liberal political figures and c.n.n. which has been certainly made to be been accused of being a bastion of the liberal establishment. thank you for that update from washington

d.c. . and still ahead on al jazeera more on the saudi crown prince a speech at an investment conference in riyadh including his glowing forecast for the gulf. hello again well this hour we are going to start here in turkey because we have a lot of active weather to talk about that's coming in off the eastern part of the mediterranean notice a satellite image a lot of clouds there and then here on thursday a lot of rain across much of the region so we're talking turkey cyprus syria jordan as well as up towards george georgia now the temperatures overnight are going to get quite low as that front moves through and we could potentially see some snow in the higher elevations of that region notice once the front goes through ancora your high temperature is only going to be about nine degrees there aleppo the rains
2:08 am
going to push through but we do expect to see only about eighteen degrees here across much of the arabian peninsula the clouds are going to stay mostly across parts of saudi arabia up towards kuwait as well and within those clouds we could see a shower too but we don't expect it to be too heavy but here in doha thirty five degrees is going to be the trend today through tomorrow as well as into friday and then over towards dhabi we do expect to see a temperature there of about thirty three degrees and then across much of the southern parts of africa well fine and dry here you really have to go a little bit more towards the north to see any clouds there but for johannesburg it is going to be a warm day but what's more here across durban with the temps of thirty in a nice day cape town attempts are twenty five. divorce rates in taiwan are soaring and as a marriage consultant and knows this only too well. but as the sixtieth wedding anniversary approaches own parents are looking hones rather than alms like the

others without a doubt cannot daughterly love and professional expertise make them see eye to eye . my fine back my mom part of the viewfinder asia series on al-jazeera. your with al-jazeera here is our top story a string of attempted bombings in the united states explosive devices or suspicious packages sent to prominent democratic politicians including former presidents bill clinton and barack obama also the cable news network c.n.n. was talking the first time since jamal khashoggi was killed three weeks ago the

u.s. president has hinted that the involvement of the saudi crown prince donald trump told the wall street journal that mohammed bin solomon is running saudi arabia so if anyone were to be involved it would be him. and the crown prince himself has broken his silence over the killing of jamal khashoggi to talk calling it a painful crime and saying justice will prevail he was speaking at an investment forum in riyadh mohamed bin salman insisted all culprits will be punished and that he would work with turkey he also spoke a lot about economic growth not just in saudi arabia but in the wider gulf the whole region as potential including cutter which is under a saudi led blockade. the kingdom of saudi arabia within the coming five years will be completely different cue weights even cata the spotted. says i have a great economy and we doing a lot in the next five years. let's unpack some of this with senior fellow and professor at the american university of beirut scott from new york so let's
2:11 am
actually just deal with that little sound bite we just heard then romney talking about all this growth in the gulf even cutter as he likes to say there i mean it was apart from his opening comments about jamal khashoggi this is all sort of well business as usual and look at how great things are in the region the law that's exactly what he was trying to do is really trying to walk back the situation where he is very much in a corner or down in a deep hole and very few people anywhere in the world believe him now that's his real problems his credibility is pretty much zero intissar just because of the incident with all of the evidence coming out of turkey and what the american president has also been hinting at that it seems the saudi government knows about this or somehow involved but it's everything that he's done in the last two or three years has not worked very well and has been seen by most people around the world to be a if not negative if not criminal at least negative you know the war in yemen the

boycott of the kidnapping the lebanese foreign minister putting so underage of the saudis in jail so he's got a huge credibility problem and he's trying to kind of get out of that corner and it's not very convincing would you expect to hear anything further from him on jamal khashoggi in self one of our earlier guests just that it might actually come down more to the way donald trump reacts and then that he would have to react again because it just seemed at this conference that he he said what he was going to say and moved on. that's what he did and nobody believes him this is the problem the people who are in the room clapping for him and sure in form are people who depend on him for lots of money and right now saudi arabia has a lot of money years ago is has had but it doesn't. achieve what it thinks it can achieve just by giving people money most of the countries who the few countries that have come to the support of saudi arabia and disposition have been people who have been financially dependent on its largess so he's trying to go back to the old
2:13 am
idea that i'm going to be a reformer and a modernizer and we're going to be wealthy and everybody is going to be happy and the problem for him is that on his actions seem to contradict what he's saying and therefore he really has no credibility he has to show with his actions that he is serious so if for instance there are people who have been identified as having been involved in this killing with me and then the subsequent cover of the cover ups is as important as the killing in many in many dimensions and therefore he's got to take real action the king and he and others have to take real action because just words won't fly anymore and he probably doesn't understand that because everything that he's done in the last three years suggests that he lives in a world of his own with american public relations agencies and consultants and that doesn't work right mccurry it's always a pleasure talking to you thank you for your time thanks. well then seven thousand

central american migrants are continuing their march towards the united states they're now in southern mexico and still have more than sixteen hundred kilometers ahead of them to reach the border u.s. president donald trump has continued his attacks though underlining his hardline immigration stance ahead of the midterm elections more from john home and he's with the caravan as they make their way north. they started walking at four o'clock in the morning to try and escape the intense heat of the day it rises to more than thirty degrees where we are in chapter south mexico and these are not just men but also women and children that have been traveling now for more than a week from honduras through guatemala and entering into mexico it's been very hard for them but they say that they've got to a point where they can't give up now i'm not stopping i'm continuing for years and want to build a future for my children and i've got this far i'm not going back there's more than seven thousand people marching although you wouldn't guess but to look at the

crown prince in salmond saudi arabia. i want you to talk here and a turkish president named erdogan and also for the first time since it was killed three weeks ago the u.s. president has hinted at the possible involvement of the saudi crown prince donald trump told the wall street journal that mohammed bin salman is running saudi arabia so if anyone were to be involved it would be him. there's been a string of attempted bombings in the united states explosive devices or suspicious packages were sent to prominent democratic politicians including the former presidents bill clinton and barack obama of the cable news network c.n.n. was also targeted at its new york headquarters and in other news more than seven thousand central american migrants are continuing their march towards the u.s. they're now in southern mexico still that more than sixteen hundred kilometers ahead of them to reach the border u.s. president donald trump has continued his attacks on the caravan though underlining

hello and welcome to the show i'm sam is a than outrage condemnation and diplomatic action escalating worldwide the killing of saudi journalists shoji continues for evoke reaction he was last seen entering the saudi consulate in istanbul on october the second since then the world has been gripped by accounts of what really happened the mystery first unfolded through leaks by turkish investigative reports emerged about a saudi hit squad killing and dismembering the journalist allegedly on the orders of the crown prince mohammed bin sound man after two weeks of saudi denials they eventually admitted do was mistakenly killed during a brawl in the consulate and they denied any involvement by the crown prince denials met with widespread skepticism turkey's president has confirmed what he
2:25 am
called a savage premeditated murder budget towboat of the one has called for an independent investigation that holds any saudi accountable from top to bottom and is calling on the kingdom to provide specially out who gave the order to murder a child g. and way his body remains are. let's have a look at how world leaders have reacted so far the message from the united states has changed significantly the u.s. is now adopting a more negative stance towards the kingdom and first on transair the saudi explanation was credible he stressed the importance of relations with his saudi allies and said millions of american jobs were more important than imposing sanctions well now the president says the saudis are guilty of the worst cover up ever germany has stopped saudi weapons deals chancellor angela merkel has joined other european countries in calling for a credible investigation the g seven which includes japan canada and the u.s.
2:26 am
condemned the killing in the strongest possible terms francis spend it all diplomatic visits to the kingdom other countries and business leaders boycotted a major investment conference in riyadh but leaders in the arab world have varied from silence to welcoming the steps taken by the saudis. let's bring in our panel joining us in the show in washington d.c. we have more in a bally senior fellow at the institute for palestine studies in istanbul soon and over again chairman of the center for economic and foreign policy studies and also in washington d.c. georgia a few out o. the c.e.o. of gulf state analytics welcome to you all if i could start with more in our human rights considerations starting perhaps perhaps more into win over in calculations of self interest now that we've seen for example the u.s. is that starting to take some initial measures like canceling visas of people it
2:27 am
believes may be linked to her job killing. i think it's a bit of a stretch to assume that the united states or some of these european governments of suddenly discover the importance of human rights in the middle east i think what's really happened here is is that the result of pressure and the constant leaks and so on have forced them into a corner and they have had to act i mean i think the operative principle for these governments is that they can't let the dismembered body of a saudi journalist get in the way of more important things like selling arms to riyadh to complete the obliteration of of yemen and to. renew conflict with iran and to consolidate israeli occupation over policy and so on but i think what's happened in this political context they have felt compelled to take
2:28 am
some measures whether they're going to be merely symbolic or more substantive is something we'll have to see over the long run but you know there is a history here of seventy years of western policy one of whose operative principles is to prevent the peoples of the middle east from controlling their own destiny and i think if you were to ask anyone in the region whether they think western and particularly american policy has been driven by any consideration of human rights they're liable to die laughing and before they can answer your question let me jump in here because we have been hearing some words along those lines from angola merkel the german chancellor let's listen in to what she's been saying about her concern for human rights. well sonya's all distant guns allowed pursuit this is what happened to khashoggi and the saudi consulate is inconceivable it reflects that human dignity isn't respected in many parts of the world some
2:29 am
treaties are now being cancelled and reversed which again prompts us to work more for world peace we must find solutions we must strive to preserve europe together because it's a society based on shared values and we must not lose sight of our gains we must continue to fight for the payments of seven decades of pace. in light of things like that let me take that scene and there are some world leaders you know really shocked has this killing really shocked some world leaders and perhaps beginning to think about how we should all really value human rights would seem to be diminishing. it certainly has shocked. the nature of the crime itself is very shocking but also the fact that it took place. at the compound of a diplomatic representation is also a part of the president and. now we have seen the reactions will leave
2:30 am
as well as a juror. who is prime. and i think the turkish strategy here which has been to also gradually share with international public opinion some of the evidence. has also allowed. the nurturing of international pressure for western governments to start to react more strongly you have. indeed for instance the german ship and the america has reacted to this two days ago there that germany was suspending on the big saudi arabia. it took more than two weeks for germany to part of that stance. i think the same can be said with regard to the u.s. administration and even their much less has happened in terms of who will roll the
2:31 am
action for reasons that we know well namely the relationship between u.s. president trump and the crown prince mohammed bin samana and but also the fact that with the trump ministration the u.s. had decided to invest much more heavily this relationship with saudi arabia and form who that was on the contained strategy towards iraq so there are also reasons why the reaction is not being commensurate with the gravity of the crime and they are holding off human rights. but we're still in your aunt's change in the u.s. position over the last two or three weeks right elise the white house position. yes but still no clear impact. on the relationship with
2:32 am
saudi so far we have seen you know ok sure lol. statements coming from the white house some negative some lessening it if. but nothing so far or they said there's not any revote visas that's tangible there's no. sorry could be that yeah they said they've started to revoke visas that's tangible isn't it yes but not to you know a way that would impact the power structure in riyadh is it ok let's bring georgia into the discussion so do you think i told george over the job killing might become a turning point in human rights accountability in saudi arabia i'm pretty skeptical right now i think that for the trump administration this comes as a huge political headache right before the united states is midterm elections next
2:33 am
month saudi arabia has of course becoming a domestic issue in the united states right now. becoming a big liability for the trumpet ministration especially with more in the media attention to the special relationship between questioner and cushion or in the crown prince of saudi arabia mohamed bin so man but to get to your question you know we're seeing some rhetoric from the white house that might seem odd from the standpoint of those who want the kingdom to be held accountable but i don't think there is going to be a real push from this in ministration on saudi arabia to change its positions on issues concerning human rights i think more pressure will probably come from u.s. lawmakers but how is this going to pan out on the ground in saudi arabia how is it going to change the way in which the kingdom is being ruled today i'm pretty skeptical about any major changes coming as
2:34 am
a result of this very ugly case. glad you mentioned the congress though will pick up on that point in a second but let me take this thought back to sin and briefly remind us what's at stake in terms of standards of governance in this region as a whole depending on how internationalized this affair in terms of accountability goes. well i mean this is really an off romps if you want to speak in moral philosophy terms this is an affront to human dignity and therefore there needs to be a strong reaction showing where walk the red lines of the international community is and that's generally what's expected however can we think that even if we were to see such a strong reaction from one community why would people overall impact of this whether this you know this incident will be glossed over and you know go back to
2:35 am
business as usual in the foreseeable future or whether we can expect to see some change in behavior some real accountability. that remains an open question ok let me take this thought to my name for the first time we've had the u.s. president in the catering and interview that the saudi crown prince might be responsible for such objects killing why what's tough and what changed his stance. when when you're talking about presidents from you're really talking about a volatile airhead who's kind of all over the map and therefore i find it very difficult to take anything he says seriously particularly because he tends to take you know every side of an issue in the space of a day and sometimes. an hour i think i think what's really at stake here
2:36 am
is i believe there is a solid u.s. and for that matter european consensus about the need to continue propping up the saudi regime as with. other repressive regimes in the region and i think the question people are asking themselves is whether this impulsive reckless. volatile crown prince mohammed bin. service that strategic objective or rather forms an obstacle to it and within the united states for example it's it's been pretty clear for some time that the professionals if you will in the state department and the cia and in the defense of establishment have their reservations about muhammad been sent down from the very outset but what you had with. the coming of the trumpet ministration as
2:37 am
a saudi american relations have become almost a function of a personal relationship between the president's son in law and cushion or and crown prince mohammed bin send money and i think what we may be seeing now at least here in the united states is an attempt by the professionals to reclaim a role in that relationship now this is complicated because in the meantime mohammed bin seven has managed to establish absolute and bra. old power and to you as a man is to weaken. and the alternative power centers whether other branches of the family or or the security forces and so on and so i think this is going to go on. for some time and even if you know there is basically i would say muhammad been some future is now in the hands of the trump administrator and ok that i think the
2:38 am
america that is holding point let me let me take that thought back to georgia so if we're seeing the white house dog home put something of a question mark over mohammed bin son man what does that mean for the crown prince it seems that if more and more people in america come to the conclusion that m.d.'s played some sort of a role in the murder of the washington post contributor it's crown prince may become the next king of saudi arabia is going to be seen as increasingly toxic in washington since he began his ascendancy to the palace m.b.'s in those around him have made major investments in the u.s. and other western countries trying to attract foreign investment for his vision twenty thirty reform agenda it's tried to obtain a lot of goodwill in washington those efforts now suffered the question is if the
2:39 am
reversal is if this can be reversed or not this negative direction it's going to be very well do you think you can cult for m.b.a.'s to regain the goodwill you know in the past. it's there have been so many issues that cause tension between the u.s. and saudi arabia between other countries and saudi arabia but overt those issues seem to sort of escape the spotlight and relations always went back to business as usual surely the saudis want that right now but given how much outrage there is in washington i think it's going to be a long time before people stop talking about souls how different this time is how many international players there are on this issue not least of which of course turkey sin and do you think turkey wants to see the accountability reach mohamed bin sound man's doorstep at this point. a shirley i tend to think
2:40 am
that that the church presence objective. that is also the reason why there is pressure. on the turkish side of gradually the reason why that is gradual is because president iran's also aware of the difficulty that this incident has caused who you are as the us president and just as the charity us relationship is. slowly moving out on that one to create yet another serious difficulty for trump before the midterms so this is the final balancing act that he has to save you know and to consideration on the one hand he wants to build up pressures that eventually
2:41 am
the moment when someone is held accountable but at the same time you also want to provide a face saving formula for trump give you a hard or easy relationship is that trump gerry question there and then yes i wonder maureen if you think listening to what's in and saying there whether you think donald trump may already be finding that face saving solution to allow perhaps harder measures against saudi arabia when he said killing of it mostly up to congress to decide what to do next surely he knows full well that the sentiment in congress monk's most senators bipartisan is to go for sanctions against saudi arabia. but you know you can you can have sanctions that amount to a slap on the wrist or you can have a meaningful change of policy and i know senator mccain won something more than
2:42 am
a slap on the wrist at this point. well that's what they're saying now you know look give the lobbyists some time to spring into action and they may end up being less enthusiastic and also what kind of sanctions are they proposing for example should the united states cease to so what the ins to saudi arabia that would obviously be good news for yemen for example but wouldn't necessarily affect the power dynamic and you know as with so many arab regimes. the legitimacy of an arab regime is not determined by the support of its own people they can survive quite well without the support of their own people the only real test of their longevity is whether western governments are prepared to continue propping them up and that i think is is the key key issue here and again we're not talking
2:43 am
about regime change in riyadh we're really talking about. the future of one player in that power structure and whether mohamed been sent will be allowed to continue exercising playing the role he has monopolizing power the way he has sent to the throne and remain on that throne for perhaps decades and given the type of decisions he's been taking i think there are growing misgivings in the west. about keeping him on board for perhaps decades to come and there are second thoughts now whether this stage it's. going to be a simple matter to have replaced or not is i think an entirely different set of questions joe joe what impact would any level of tough action from congress have do you think on riyadh. i think that if the u.s. government is going to take actions against saudi arabia what we can expect is an

acceleration of a trend that began years and years ago and that is the saudi arabians making a geo economic shift eastward what we're seeing from this current conference in saudi arabia that's ongoing right now is. sort of a stepped up presence of russian chinese and other eastern investors in the kingdom on in many countries in the east there is less of a political price for the leadership to pay it seen as being very close to a regime like saudis on and so i think saudi arabia is going to try to become more autonomy from the united states and europe and its eyes are going to be on moscow and beijing relies heavily on the u.s. for its defense mechanism and strategy though doesn't it say i'm. yes indeed
2:45 am
and i think just to hold on that call is conspicuous you know way that so far the statements coming out of moscow has have been very useful we have not heard any no criticism from most though it is you know and since they were essentially white courses and protective riyadh's inches so i think when we talk about the reaction to what happened to national community maybe we should be a bit more nuanced in the real reaction is from the west we have immediacy and used strong reaction from other countries like russia or china and that ultimately may also be a consideration calculus is the up. how real is this scenario do you think of saudi arabia using perhaps its oil cod to kind
2:46 am
of mute any consideration of strong sanctions or actions against it i think it's extremely unlikely. because what saudi arabia needs now more than anything is a strengthening of its relations with the west and particularly with the trumpet ministration secondly saudi arabia is very heavily invested in and along with israel and the trumpet ministration and seeking to increase tensions and pursue a strategy of regime change in iran and so the last thing it will want to do is to take measures that will raise the price of oil above and beyond what the removal of iranian oil from from the market would cause so i think it's extremely unlikely and also you know bear in mind the context saudi arabia is now under
2:47 am
a significant reputational pressure if you will and if it responds to this by playing the oil card you know trying to wreak havoc in an energy markets and so on that's going to reflect very negatively on the men particularly on the and individual who everyone sees as effectively functioning as a sole decision maker and these days all right i think we are going to have to end the discussion there because we're running out of time it's been a good discussion let's thank our guests though joe joe coffey out of c n n gun and more in rabbani. thank you too for watching you can see the show again any time by visiting our website al-jazeera dot com and for further discussion head over to our facebook page facebook dot com forward slash a.j. inside story you can also join the conversation on twitter handle there is at a.j. inside story from me sam is

from doha everyone kamal santa maria and this is the news hour from al-jazeera the saudi crown prince mohammed bin someone has made his first public comments on the killing of jamal khashoggi saying it is a heinous crime. it's a time of. deep. divisions. and we have to do everything we can to bring our country together. suspected bombs have been found in the mail sent to several democratic leaders including hillary clinton and barack obama on the move again the central american migrants convoy marches across mexico with the u.s. warning it won't be allowed to cross borders all of that plus. i'm andrew thomas in new delhi where the government is under pressure to take action against what's out fake news spread by the messaging service is being held responsible for a string of terrific murders but how much blame should the social media companies

shoulder. so saudi arabia's crown prince has broken his silence over the murder of journalist jamal khashoggi calling it a painful crime and saying justice will prevail he was addressing the issue for the first time since she was reported missing in istanbul earlier this month with mama been someone insisting all culprits will be punished and that he will work with turkey but remember the prince himself is widely suspected of ordering the journalists death although he denies all knowledge. had to shoot. first of all it's very painful to the saudis to all saudis it is painful to everyone in the world it's a brutal attack not accepted investigations are happening and we will work with the turkish government to reach results in the perpetrators will be brought to justice this is something that has to be taken by any government and undoubtedly the

cooperation between the turkish and saudi government is good and we know a lot of people are trying to seize these painful situation to create a rift between turkey and saudi arabia and i want this place to send a message that you will never be able to do that as long as you have a king in. crown prince. saudi arabia. and a turkish president named erdogan. body has still not been far more than three weeks after he was last seen at the saudi consulate in istanbul but turkish investigators have now been given permission to search a well in the residence of the saudi consul general also the us president has piled on the pressure he is calling it the worst cover up in the history of cover ups donald trump says the ultimate responsibility for his death could lie with the crown prince will turkish officials say shortly before the crown prince left for

the investment conference he spoke to turkey's president on the phone and their first conversation since the killing of chip type one is demanding saudi arabia extradite those responsible to face trial in turkey. joy a lot of you know it's interesting to note. we are determined not to allow a cover up of the school murder and to make sure all those responsible from those who ordered it to those who carried it out it will not be allowed to avoid justice this is not only our responsibility to try shoji he was murdered viciously on our country's borders but also to the international community law and justice. more now on the turkish investigation and the forensic teams search for the body of jamal khashoggi alan fisher has the details. even the routine looks suspicious now. i say the consular residence in istanbul they were cleaning sewers it happens a few times a year this street was due but with turkish forensic teams searching everywhere possible for clues to locate jamal khashoggi his body this takes on
2:55 am
a new significance it's now but trying to piece together a complex gruesome jigsaw with huge international implications you would think that the whole effort would be to see that justice was done early seemed to be done at least to name the guilty parties but of course it's much more complicated than that because it involves a whole web of relationship in this very complex region and also course the united states that is the car park in istanbul suburb where so many consular car was discovered it was searched turkish police found a computer and clothes but still don't know why it was here then there is the place where an alleged should you body double the clothes he was wearing when he left the consulate all done to suggest the right or left the building the turkish president says a saudi team came here to this forest a short drive from istanbul the day before jamal khashoggi died the suggestion they were looking for a place to dump a body the implication his death was premeditated and not the result of

a fight that got out of hand. each and every day there seems to be new information revealed or leaked the latest this was the car used for that mission in the forest caught by security cameras now an important part of the investigation but there's the feeling turkey's president was far more than has been made public clearly the president of turkey is trying to use this incident to weaken. the saudi era parents but. it's a dangerous game to play if he plays his cards as it were too rough for peace to insist there are too forceful things could rebalance so he's trying still a little bit carefully. the turks seem to know what happened in great detail who may have been responsible and we are not bringing them in front of a turkish court seems unlikely but they're pushing on with their inquiries and promise to soon sure what they know with their allies and the rest of the world

alan fischer al jazeera istanbul and now to charles stratford in istanbul charles just a heads up we are waiting to hear from the u.s. president to the next few minutes so if i have to interrupt you my apologies in advance but can you bring us up to date with the investigation in istanbul right now. we heard earlier from the government that. has been clearance now given by the saudi side of the team to investigate have a sora look at this well in the garden of the consul general now it's been a week since the first team went in joint joint teams out each team went in we understand that the reason why the well wasn't already looked at. cheering that first investigation was because the people that were june to check it which we understand may well be members of the fire brigade and forensic experts were not on the list that had been played by the saudi side of that investigation when the

stand the well is around twenty five meters deep it seems fairly conceivable that the investigation will now go forward seeing as it's dark but we fully expect certainly tomorrow to see turkish members of that say we can't confirm whether saudi officials will that be saudi observers with the other developments as we heard referred to there in alan's package very interesting the still photographs taken from c.c. t.v. video footage around that forested area the belgrade far east outside of istanbul showing well looks like a b.m.w. car b.m.w. vehicle with consulate plates saudi consular plates on it as well the government is saying and of course this is the government is saying that that was that photograph was taken well that video footage was taken the day be full shows he was killed and
2:59 am
of course we heard a one yesterday president or one yesterday referring to a team from the consulate that is believed by well have gone into that area the day before because shows he was killed with the reference to will certainly implication that there was a it was a reconnaissance mission looking for a potential place to bury his body we we also understand of cools the that the search for these so-called collaborates is very much ongoing a lot of interest in what's been described as as somebody who aides believe is turkish and may have helped in moving the body from the consulate to a vehicle to be removed out of the consulate certainly there has been government leaks saying that the body had been wrapped in a rug and is an indication that this the so-called collaborates it was very much involved in in that side of the operation. thank you for that update that's charles
