saudi tie is a complex tangle of contract stock preferences and legal obligations time a company's hands in such matters in some ways this case is providing an opportunity for companies to really provide some ethical and moral leadership maybe at a time when they're not seeing or experiencing what they'd like to see from leadership in other sectors silicon valley corporations face a dilemma choosing between an ethical response to a shocking crime and the abundant funding that makes the tech industry flourish well joining me now from singapore is i mean they i mean it is a jap pan stock market strategist with singapore based symmetric advisors good to have you with us so how much damage has the whole affair done to the attractiveness of saudi money in the tech world right now or it's difficult to say the moment but i mean the likelihood is that you know it's going to have some notable impact all
12:33 pm
12:34 pm
12:35 pm
five percent down so yes a very very big contributor it's not so easy to find alternatives if they pull out but i don't think saudis will pull out. i think it is in their benefit to to to stay in it and i think the fact that so on sun sun i decided to go to riyadh but not attend the conference i'm pretty sure that's already had the blessings of the saudi government they understand that you know if someone does show up in the conference you know i might send the wrong signals for the vision fund and the saudis on the vision front to succeed will softbank be able low too good to launch another fund for investments in the tech world as was planned. that depends on you know whether the saudis will participate in the future because another said that they want to participate and then add another forty five billion dollars to the second fund. the question is you know if the question is you know will they be
12:36 pm
able to kind of raise that kind of money without the saudis obvious you'd be a lot more challenging. it's a lot of money. i mean this size of these funds which of unheard of previously. is what was supposed to give soft bank the vision fund a big kind of advantage strategic advantage because you know they're in a position to basically you know bind size and support these companies not putting pressure on them like perhaps some of the other v.c.s. would. because you know they have some very deep resources has this whole affair made it any harder for soft bank to launch that second fund because of fears of maybe sanctions which you mentioned because for some companies. it being associated with a fund that gets
12:37 pm
a lot of money from saudi arabia is not the most positive thing in the world and so on and so forth yes the answer to your question is yes obviously they're going to have a difficult more difficult time. convincing people to take their money. so the answer to that is most probably yes will be more difficult would it be impossible i don't know. but it would be more difficult the other question that you know you have to ask is in a way that the if the saudis did stay in the vision fund one and two let's say will the other seat is likely to be kind of. shy away from the front so you know there are there are the see there's in the vision fun like apple. and on and some of the big names so potentially you know we might see some of those other see this kind of pull out so you know it's a fluid situation as i said it's not positive but you know from here
12:38 pm
it's just mainly spec it speculation to. to assume that you know this is going to impact the vision fund immediately but yeah i mean if this continues if the negativity surrounding saudi money continues then yes going to be more difficult thank you very much for your thoughts on that no problem thank you the future investment initiative conference took place in riyadh this week its purpose to show off the kingdom's investment plans but scores of business and government figures pulled out of the conference amid global outrage over what should g.'s death some finances still went to riyadh though chief executives who did sharping clude patrick prion a of the french oil company total burn smith has more. by the time crown prince mohammed bin solomon turned up at the future investment initiative summit in riyadh a day after it started saudi arabia had already signed deals worth fifty billion
12:39 pm
dollars another six billion was added by the time the event closed the murder of jamal khashoggi at the saudi consulate in istanbul cast a dark shadow over the conference but it's not stopped business being done of its people are hearing outworking there still is western representation there are bankers there are people you know investors looking to the business they're just not always up to the highest level as they were last year and it's clear from talking to many of them that some of them are frustrated that their c.e.o.'s and their top executives are pulled out also missing from the summit was senior politicians from mainly western countries who withdrew his outrage over his murder group but there were plenty of others who did attend perhaps not as easily able to resist the financial clout of the world's biggest oil producer there were government delegations from china russia and african and middle eastern countries vision the conference has been solomon's brainchild created to draw investment and
12:40 pm
diversification into an oil dependent economy that needs to find new ways to provide millions of jobs and it's those opportunities that attendees couldn't ignore you can't take away decades of collaboration. affective collaboration. over one incident of course or sconce or quinces fractions and then and then hopefully you can get past those actions the conference was told that multi-billion dollar plans include theme parks and red sea tourist resorts saudi arabia says it also wants to offer privatization opportunities in education health care and desalination for mohammed bin solomon it was almost business as usual. well joining me now from london is name as lamb name is chief market analyst with think mark it's good to have you with us so name how much of a dent has the whole affair put on the saudi investment conference overall i would
12:41 pm
say that the expectations of what they were before this. this affair that they're very different now or saudi officials say they sealed deals worth fifty billion dollars but do we know how much business was lost because of the g. affair for example you know siemens said it alone froze a twenty billion dollar deal but you know there is no question the deals were done . and investors were there entrepreneurs were that there is no doubt about that i think what we are really referring or hair is the level of it on to panesar the sea level executives that was supposed to go there and then the business down on the back of that that would have created some serious headlines because right now they only had a line that we see is that yes one billion worth of a stock selloff by foreign investors and the other headlines that everyone is focused on is that here is the local investors they also were selling the stock
12:42 pm
market in terms of a ryall of i think devaluation was nearly about three billion but then some insiders some banking in local introduced were the only one who were buying that i'm glad you mentioned that when you've got a situation in which foreigners foreigners in particular are selling over one billion dollars worth of shares on the saudi stock market i mean how much of a blow is that to a stock market. it has a very detrimental impact on the saudi stock exchange or on the style of saudi financial markets there is no doubt about that let me put things in perspective c.d.s. stands for credit default swaps and we have seen these c.d.s. incredibly increasing so just for the viewers to make this explain it may make this concept a bit easier when the c.d.s. is rising it means the pick the risk on the country is rising enormously and we've seen those colors of shooting right to the upside in comparison to qatar we have
12:43 pm
seen that risk declining so what investors are thinking saudi stock market is highly risky market to be in and what i wanted to point out is a very important element here why the saudi c.d.'s or the risk is increasing at the same time for the insurance of that market abu dabi is stock exchange we have seen the similar trend as well so the insurance premium for the stock market as anchored quite enormously in the past few days will make pension fund managers though for example any less eager to put their money into saudi stocks in the portfolios lake pension funds and big index funds they are very sensitive to these kind of news an example of that would be google saying no to pentagon that big contract just because the employees started to backlashing they don't want to be involved or pentagon is involved now we have the same in
12:44 pm
a sense around the globe where the investors are going to be happy that a k. rather we want to have a saudi money backing up some new businesses or by the vive wanted to have a saudi money involved in certain part of the business is that remains to be a question because generally speaking i don't think a lot of investors are feeling comfortable with that idea and if that continues to be the case then of course the that's not going to bring any fruitful results for the saudi market or what about spillover how well integrated is the saudi stock market into the global system. not so much directly if we are talking about this purely from the stock market perspective right because it's only institutional or qualified investors can only participate in that market yes the e.t.f. market is still out there where other investors can perhaps participate but if we look at the fund flow in those e.t.s.
12:45 pm
or a non qualified investors or the or the quickly investors of the same criteria can actually invest we are seeing negative fund flow we're still seeing people drawing money out of those e.t.s. rather than putting that money in so i think in a run we are if we are to speaking of the direct correlation of a style the stock market over the over the walled stock market or with other stock market no correlation isn't that great but if we are talking about the commodity aspect or the secret weapons of or oil or anything of that nature then yes the correlation is as strong as it can be all right now i must i'm going to talk to thank you and that's our show for this week about remember you can get in touch with us via twitter use the hash tag a j c z c when you do all drop us an e-mail counting the cost of al-jazeera dot net is our address there's more for you online

a question that needs to be answered by the saudi officials a president demanding answers a saudi says it will prosecute suspects in the killing of jamal khashoggi. also world leaders trying to take the united stand on ending the war in syria but major differences remain plus the man known as brazil's donald trump looks sent to trances left his challenger in sunday's presidential election but his opponent still holds out a glimmer of hope we'll tell you why. welcome to the program a suspected gunman's facing hate crime charges after a mass shooting at a synagogue baby naming ceremony in the u.s. at least eleven people were killed in full police officers were among the injured. off former. our own.

forty six year old robert bales is facing twenty nine charges for the attack on the tree of life synagogue in the city of pittsburgh if convicted he could face the death penalty can be healthy to our correspondent you've been following events for us through the night that can be just begin with these charges that were filed a short few hours ago. yeah the charges twenty nine counts as you point out under federal hate crime legislation as well as the fact that this is firearm charges that he is facing according to the department of justice eleven people killed in this attack six people injured four of them police officers we should point out who arrived on the scene and exchanged gunfire with the suspect and that is when they became wounded apparently this individual saying that he
12:51 pm
wanted to kill all jews when he opened fire after being in the building for roughly twenty minutes we are told the tac is being called one of the worst jews in american history. around the country evening vigils to remember the victims of the pittsburgh synagogue shootings gunned down in an act of hate audio from the first responders captured the horror as police arrived on the scene right there on the part of doing. police learning the gunman's potential motive to kill as many jews as possible inside the tree of life synagogue when the when. the shooting suspect has been identified as robert bowers a man in his forty's not previously known to police the f.b.i. is investigating the shooting as a hate crime yeah actions this person took today. this is the most horrific crime scene i've seen in twenty two years a federal investigation minutes before the shooting bowers allegedly blamed on

social media a jewish nonprofit group for bringing immigrants to the united states he wrote i can't sit by and watch my people get slaughtered screw your optics i'm going in bowers post also stated a dislike for president trump a feeling truck made clear was mutual as he called for the suspect if convicted to face the death penalty we must stand with our jewish brothers and sisters to defeat anti-semitism and vanquish the forces of hate and those seeking their destruction we will seek their destroy. a crimes against jews and worshippers of other faiths are not new in the united states in two thousand and twelve six were shot and killed in the sikh temple in wisconsin in twenty fifteen nine african-americans were gunned down at a church in charleston a year later twenty six were killed at

a church in rural texas following the pittsburgh attack police around the united states increased patrols at synagogues and other houses of worship as americans more it takes leadership to stop us and our lead. is or not stopping at it's too much we're a civilized society but the u.s. anti-defamation league says hate crimes against religious groups are on the rise pittsburgh synagogue shooting now considered the deadliest attack on jews in american history. of course can be the issue of hate crimes against various religious groups requires political leadership that's what was said by one of the contributors in your report is just not there and i suppose really the debate beyond hate crime against a religious premises will continue because gun control is that huge issue and it will be highlighted in the days leading up to these very important midterm elections which many american politicians will be facing that's correct i mean it's
12:54 pm
a divisive issue in the united states the issue of gun control donald trump represents a large. percentage of americans who believe the best way to stop gun violence is with a gun in fact he made such a comment when he was traveling on saturday at one of his stops he said that this is a case where he believed of an armed guard had been inside that synagogue they may have been able to stop the shooting immediately and in fact there are cases in the united states where that has occurred although it's not widely reported because often these are people that stop the shooting before it starts and there are a large number of casualties and carnage in this case obviously that was not the case and in fact we now know that there were efforts by the synagogue to try and prevent the very tragedy that has occurred the department of homeland security secretary cares and nielson confirming that the synagogue had reached out to the department of homeland security to try and combat the violence it has now

experience conducting a site survey and working with the community to try and increase security and safety for the worshippers so they will leave it can be of course will fall over as for the u.s. today progresses thank you. it's a lecturer at the university of new haven and a retired f.b.i. special agent who worked on the unabomber case he says the shooting in pittsburgh can't be linked to the bombs that were mailed to critics of donald trump. in this particular case this event was a hate crime and as a hate crime guy it was driven by a person that was filled with hate by looking at his social media he has a history of being anti-semitic so you have to look at each event and its in its entirety but just by itself you cannot meet the events of bombings and bombs and. number of high profile democrats to this shooting in
12:56 pm
a synagogue it's it's just not linked in this particular case the shooter in this one particular instance telegraphed ahead of time on social media what it was and to do and then he went and carried it out so you know this is a horrific at that. saudi arabia's public prosecutor is due to arrive in istanbul later on sunday to discuss the killing of jamal khashoggi turkish prosecutors won the extradition of eighteen suspects but side because foreign minister has rejected the cole it all comes at a time of mounting european pressure on saudi arabia ellen fisher house wolf mistime will. we came to talk city up but the jamal khashoggi case was never far from the surface as the four utopian leaders gathered after the istanbul meeting turkey's president again demanded those responsible for this killing should face
12:57 pm
trial in his country if you did this crime took place in istanbul if saudi arabia is not going to put these people on trial the turkish judiciary can do that here in istanbul and through our ministry of justice jamal khashoggi disappeared after visiting the saudi consulate in istanbul earlier this month initially the saudis denied he'd left the building but under growing international pressure the admitted he had killed the writer and u.s. president in what he described as a fight gone wrong european. leaders insist so the reviewer faces a coordinated sanctions campaign when the results of all the investigations are known and there. once we know who is behind the state and what the links are we will strive to have a joint european reaction to show we act from a common basis of values it plays on it. for me things a clear firstly some of the facts have been established we must fully investigate a nation of these facts and who's responsible for sanctions must be taken on this
12:58 pm
basis and these sanctions must be coherent and complete and be extremely concrete and proportional it would depend on the facts to say a established and the sanctions will be taken at a european level as we usually do so that there is true coordination but if so the prosecutor will arrive in istanbul in the coming hours it's lying for the turkish authorities the case against eighteen saudis country being held there in connection with the coup showed to killing these also expected to face pressure to extradite them here to turkey where the offense took place earlier so these foreign minister ruled out any extradition on the issue of extradition of the individuals of saudi nationals to detained and sundry with investigation since one year and they will be prosecuted internally at the same conference the u.s. defense secretary said because shoji killing undermines security across the region failure of any one nation to adhere to international norms and the rule of law
12:59 pm
undermine regional stability at a time when it is needed most turkey is growing frustrated with despite public commitments to help any investigation we still don't know where jamal khashoggi body is and who was the mystery local cooperator as the saudis described him who helped dispose of the body and does he really exist all questions the saudi prosecutor will have to answer when he sits stone face to face with his turkish counterpart alan fischer al-jazeera is the. hoshyar brought his following events for us in istanbul and hashim i wonder how much of this sort of war of words between riyadh an anglo will continue in terms of a standoff because while turkey demands answers riyadh is dragging its feet so how this is definitely going to be one of the issues topping the agenda of the meeting today between the sandy general prosecutor and his turkish counterpart basically about. the extradition issue with the church saying that basically they
1:00 pm
would like to see the eighteen people responsible for the killing goes on well actually to be extradited and tried here in turkey is something that has been dismissed by the saudi government and also questions that the turkish government says it needs answers about particularly when it comes to what exactly happened who gave the orders or was responsible higher up in the saudia hierarchy and also ultimately where is the body of the about the and i think this is a list those answers and those questions are answered by the saudi government given what reassurances to the or turkish authorities were deaf to going to brace for more tension between the two countries and of course if turkey isn't happy and as we've seen in the last three weeks there is this slow stick systemic release of information tit bits as we say.
