9:49 pm
in u.s. history sri lanka's prime minister refuses to leave his official residence in a deepening political crisis turkey pushes for the suspects in the jamal khashoggi murder to be extradited but saudi arabia insists that we put on trial in the kingdom and the far right a former army captain nicknamed the trump of the tropics casts his vote as polls open in the second round of brazil's presidential election and i'm here to stand with all your sports tributes are being paid at leicester city football club after a helicopter crash at the stadium in which the club's billionaire tie owner was believed to have been on board. so a suspect is in custody in the us after a mass shooting during a baby naming ceremony in a synagogue in pittsburgh eleven people were killed and four police officers are among the wounded. right.
9:50 pm
off former automatic weapons gun shots are all right. forty six year old robert bowers is now facing twenty nine charges over this attack at the tree of life synagogue if convicted he could face the death penalty the shooting has set off renewed political debate over gun control and hate speech from pittsburgh this report is from andy gallacher. around the country evening vigils to remember the victims of the pittsburgh synagogue shooting gunned down in an act of hate odio from first responders captured the horror as police arrived on the scene police learning the gunman's potential motive to kill as many jews as possible inside the tree of life synagogue. the shooting suspect has been identified as robert powers a man in his forty's not previously known to police yeah actions this person took
9:51 pm
today and were ready for this is the most horrific crime scene i've seen in twenty two years with the federal bureau of investigation minutes before the shooting was allegedly blamed on social media a jewish nonprofit group for bringing immigrants the united states he wrote i can't sit by and watch my people get slaughtered screw your optics i'm going in his post also stated a dislike for president trump a feeling made clear was mutual as he called for the suspect if convicted to face the death penalty we must stand with our jewish brothers and sisters to defeat anti-semitism and vanquish the forces of hate and those seeking their destruction we will seek their destroy. hate crimes against jews and worshippers of other faiths are not new in the united states in two thousand and twelve six were shot and killed at a sikh temple in wisconsin in twenty fifteen nine african-americans were gunned
9:52 pm
down at a church in charleston a year later twenty six were killed at a church in rural texas following the pittsburgh attack police around the united states increased patrols at synagogues and other houses of worship as americans mourn and it takes leadership to stop this and our leaders are not stopping at it's too much we're a civilized society but the u.s. anti-defamation league says hate crimes against religious groups are on the rise and the pittsburgh synagogue shooting now considered the deadliest attack on jews in american history. signed a gallic of that report and he's live now in pittsburgh and he since you sent that report what new developments that come through. well of those twenty nine charges we've been able to glean some more information we know that the first phone calls came in on saturday morning around ten am we know that the suspected shooter's shooter baez was inside the synagogue for about twenty minutes firing
9:53 pm
indiscriminately we know that eight of those people that were killed were men and three women when the police did arrive on the scene by was was actually leaving the synagogue retreated inside to the third floor way and gauged with officers there was fired between the police and bowers four police officers were injured two other congregants were injured but among those twenty nine charges thirteen of them are considered religious hate crimes all of those charges altogether mean that if found guilty could face the death penalty but really this is a community now in deep mourning this is one of the oldest jewish communities in the united states this synagogue about one hundred years old it's really hard to think that not everyone you know everyone in this community has been touched by this tragedy the victims have not yet been named we're waiting for a press conference to happen any moment where perhaps those victims will eventually be named but this is really one of those issues that again brings up gun crime that
9:54 pm
again brings up hate crime just a few days ago man was arrested in florida for sending a dozen pipe bombs to critics of president trump so this country is divided as always but this event in particular really highlights what those divisions can mean and would these be election issues now and then given we've got midterms in got it's about one and a half weeks now. yeah i mean this again those issues that come up hate crimes and gun control i'm not sure that's going to affect people's vote because this is already a divided nation i think those people on the left will be even more determined to get out and vote on november the sixth for those all important midterm elections and the people on the right will still back. against going against any kind of gun control when you think about the events that i alone have covered over the past year las vegas the polls nightclub shooting marjorie stoneman douglas high school
9:55 pm
and of course that attack in charleston in which nine african-american worshipers were killed nothing has really changed in this country this certainly been no gun control not too much done to tackle these kinds of hate crimes so if anything i think this will just galvanize voters on both the left and the right who are very divided at the moment to turn up to those polls and try and make their voices heard meanwhile here in squirrel hill this is a community that is now in deep deep mourning and incidentally they did actually at the synagogue a couple of years ago hired a former f.b.i. investigator to head up their security they practiced for these active shooter scenarios in which what they were trained what to do but i think essentially they were not expecting this to happen this was a baby naming ceremony a brisk as it's known in the jewish community they think around twenty five family members were inside the synagogue when this attack happened and we think that bowers had an a r fifteen assault rifle unfortunately that is the chosen weapon often in these cases and he had several handguns and he was registered or known to

have had more than twenty weapons and someone who took to the internet reportedly on a regular basis to rants and make anti-semitic comments but he wasn't known to police before this happened but obviously none of that really matters to this community at the moment they are really in shock and again coming to terms with what was a horrible horrible hate crime here on saturday morning. from pittsburgh they're live with and thank you we're also waiting for a news conference from local police as well they're preparing for that in pittsburgh and soon as that happens we'll bring it to you. moving to other news sri lanka's president through policy to santa is accusing the sacked prime minister of enabling corruption and mismanaging the economy in an address to the nation running become a singer insists his dismissal was illegal and refuses to leave his official residence he wants an emergency session of parliament to prove he still has a majority the speaker of the parliament has also refused to endorse for christmas

and sacking a president or policy the senate has suspended parliament to hold off any challenge to his decision to appoint a former president mahinda rajapakse as prime minister there's a lot of names in play them enough amanda's joins us now from colombo to bring it all together first of all you know i have read on the news wires reports of shots being fired do you have any more information. that's right what we've heard is the salon petroleum corporation or the state sort of petrol john and the headquarters is where the shots were fired the petrol only a minister on the run the pickup missing is believed to have led to the premises and that was a standoff a way of people that had gathered at the premises now this is the kind of thing that we've seen for all the last forty eight hours in certain state institutions where supporters of both sides have confronted each other and now mel i'm sorry i'm

going to have to interrupt you there i'm really sorry about that but we have got this live news conference coming in from pittsburgh on the shooting of a new it's berg is one that we as pittsburghers treasure it's an important part of the cultural and social identity of pittsburgh and so this was an attack upon our neighbors and upon our friends and one that we felt very deeply the fact that this attack took place during a worship service makes it even more heinous. a place of worship is a sacred place it's a place of peace and a place of grace it's a place where a community comes together to celebrate that that they hold most dear and most sacred and this of course is our first freedom as a people so today all over pennsylvania men and women in similar places of worship are in prayer for a jewish brothers and sisters so today we stand together as a community a community the rejects hatred and violence

a community where neighbors respect neighbors where we embrace our religious diversity and we celebrate our differences and together we mourn those whose lives were lost and we begin the healing process i want to commend the courageous police officers and swat teams who responded to the scene they are truly heroes who without hesitation without concern for their own safety ran toward gunfire to protect innocent victims by confronting and neutralizing bauer's they prove prevented additional loss of life so worried about the charges last night my office filed federal charges against the defendant robert bowers the complaint alleges that on saturday october twenty seventh at approximately nine fifty am robert bowers entered the tree of life synagogue in pittsburgh squirrel hill neighborhood at that time members of the tree of life synagogue were engaged in
