and i had read that what we've got here is not just about france and new caledonia it's got much bigger strategic implications the big unmentioned country joy about the mention of course is china china's influence across the garden nations is growing at an incredible rate they're spending money they're investing in a project infrastructure projects certainly influencing politics in many pacific island countries and the concern among many countries in this region including australia it has to be said is that an independent new caledonia independent of france would struggle economically france at the moment massively subsidizes that territories budget and it would look to find another benevolent power that could give it the money that it needs and china is where many people think it would look so that is the big strategic question in all of this now we should get ahead of ourselves the vote so far looks as though it's going to be for new caledonia to remain so none of these questions will be but securely relevant in the short term but bear in mind this because france's president wanted this to be

as one of the country's principal identities sorry the russian orthodox church has been on a huge expansion drive in the past ten years the number of dioceses has doubled and ten thousand churches being built. it's exacerbated by human resource problem many more churches not enough ballerinas automated systems are an obvious solution but some people say they lack the soul and spirituality of the human touch like at this church school in moscow where featuring is being trained. as robots will never replace a human soul for me it was also discovered that each spring implies a praying glory to father glory to song and when we prayed the same time as i found out it's certainly something that requires skill ok i've just been given a brief lesson and what i've been told is my right hand controls the for hire bells

protests pick up momentum in iran on the eve of sanctions coming back into force. a lot hasn't sleeker this is al jazeera live from dot also coming up turkish media reveal more about how saudi agents got rid of the body of murdered journalist. came to make their vote count signs of the highest turnout for decades in the u.s. midterm elections. and as the leader of one of mexico's most dangerous cartels awaits trial in the u.s. we look at why as chappell's business is still thriving. hello in less than twenty four hours the u.s. will reimpose one of its toughest sanctions on iran today the move is fueling anger in the capital tehran where protesters have been chanting down with the usa the

demonstration was part of a ceremony to mark the thirty ninth anniversary of the nine hundred seventy nine islamic revolution president donald trump announced he would bring back sanctions lifted under the twenty fifty nuclear deal the trump withdrew from that agreement earlier this year iran's leaders have played down the u.s. move the current commander of the elite revolutionary guard saying tehran will resist any sanctions let's go live now to tehran zain basra he is there for suzanne you were just at the protests earlier marking this thirty ninth anniversary of the storming of the u.s. embassy there what's happening there right now. well the rally at the time there were thousands of people there is one of the larger crowds we've seen in the last few years of course to commemorate the takeover of the u.s. embassy compound university students stormed the compound took fifty two americans prisoner and that sparked

a four hundred forty four day hostage crisis the longest in recorded history the reason i mention that history that context is because it was a seminal moment in the history of what was then the very young islamic republic of iran this was only a few months after the revolution that overthrew the shah of iran reza pahlavi and brought the current islamic republic of iran into into existence and not only was it a seminal moment in the country's history but a seminal moment in the relationship between the united states and iran this year the crowds were bigger and the security was higher and it seemed that people there certainly were angrier and that's probably because this year the anniversary coincided with the deadline for the reimposition of sanctions that had been lifted as part of the two thousand and fifty nuclear deal and reimposed by the american president donald trump and so what we've seen is that these sanctions going into effect made those crowds a little more. animated if you will of course the sanctions we know are coming up
3:29 pm
will be targeting iran's oil sector the oil industry banking and shipping all these things combined earned iran its largest economic revenue it's the biggest generator of money for the country and this deadline means that from tomorrow on words iran will no longer be able to sell its oil freely on the international market but many iranians we spoke to said that this deadline is meaningless because foreign investors have already left the country and american economic pressure has already had the desired effect and economic damage has already been done we spoke to some iranians here's what they had to say. when you look past all the politics what becomes clear is that american sanctions people more than they change iranian government policies american policy some would say brinkmanship has meant economic chaos for iran the value of the iranian has suffered a major fall in the last year adding to high inflation and unemployment concerns
3:30 pm
all of this hurts low income and working people first and foremost they struggle to feed their families because prices for some basic goods have doubled. they talk about their problems. when a customer wants to buy some. people used to buy meat once a month. when it comes to iran u.s. presidents have pursued a policy of containment for decades trying to limit iranians economically militarily and politically in their regional and global affairs even the twenty fifteen nuclear deal that president barack obama championed that gave iran back some of its financial freedoms many iranians saw that is just a softer approach to the same containment policy but by turning back the clock on bilateral ties with iran what president donald trump has done is to show people
3:31 pm
here that during his administration there will be no blurred lines between friends and enemies but if trumpet hope pushing iranians towards poverty would inspire them to topple their own leaders he'll likely be disappointed previous protests never got big enough all he's apparently done is make people here miserable. do you think mr trump is a crazy man who made the situation in the region drastically worse his involvement in the region and sanctions have made the people hate him i really don't think that he's the one that should be the president of america. maybe good for his own people but not as you do i think. it's better not to say anything about his personality everyone knows how. everybody knows. what iran's leaders signed the nuclear deal they said it was the thing to fix everyone's financial problems three years later with american promises of more sanctions than ever before the
3:32 pm
best that people here can hope for is that iran can manage to sell enough oil to survive until donald trump has left the white house so what is the mood there regarding the sanctions and how people are reacting in general. well at the heart of all of this is the fact that iran is going to be technically limited in its ability to sew oil these sanctions are targeting the thing that is at the very heart of this the thing that one's the country's economic engine and so what we've saw in the last few days is people reacting to the announcement of eight countries receiving waivers to u.s. sanctions to be able to continue to buy iranian oil and many of the officials here have been saying the same thing that experts are saying which is that the one thing that donald trump didn't count on in his attempt to try to reduce iran's output is the basic principle of supply and demand one expert we spoke to here
3:33 pm
a former iranian representative to opec said that the global infrastructure to make oil simply put all the all the countries making oil simply don't have the infrastructure in place to make up for any oil that iran would stop selling on the international market and so they really counted on the fact that supply and demand would kick in that that would take some kind of toll on the oil price and that would trigger. some sort of reaction by the americans which is what they say these eight waivers are so officials here are optimistic about what happens going forward this is going to keep being able to sell oil and that sanctions in the past were international sanctions involving the world there was a u.n. mandate these are only sanctions the triumph is putting into place there's a great deal of support for iran by world leaders on the global stage and so these sanctions are going to be relatively easy to cope with that's the sort of macro government approach to everything that's happening and what might happen going
3:34 pm
forward people on the other hand are discouraged by this they say that they didn't sign up to this nuclear agreement to simply sustain themselves that they want to see some sort of economic advancement not just economic survival zain thanks for that zain bus ravi live for us and to herat. well iran is one of the world's largest oil produces and its oil and gas exports are worth billions of dollars a year or so who are its biggest customers while this chart shows iran's average exports in thousands of barrels of oil a day from november twenty seven thousand to april of this year and as you can see china is the biggest importer of iranian oil with about seven hundred thousand barrels next is india with just under six hundred thousand barrels a day followed by south korea then turkey and rounding out the top five is italy a mother she had tack in is an international oil and energy consultant he says iranian oil companies are used to operating on the sanctions so these are all good
3:35 pm
signs as far as iran is concerned that you don't can continue exporting its origin that it has been i think success will see it only an orderly sportswear saber in the spring about two and a half million barrels per day and the reports were that already in summer many customers and stopped buying or has reduced the purchases but the data are a bit contradictory for example some reports say that in september you know exports were one point eight million barrels per day.
