7:00 am
it was not an accident it was a crime but maybe the point is the really significant recent. update but instead. of the fun on al-jazeera. hello again i'm laura kyle this is all special extended coverage of the results of the u.s. midterm elections and this hour we expect to keep getting these results coming in republicans so far have retained control of the u.s. senate in these midterm elections and they're even expanding a one seat majority it's a different story in the house of representatives that's where the democrats all set to win a majority. i'm heidi joe castro is live in arizona where early
7:01 am
returns show a virtual tie between candidates for senate. so it's turning out to be a story of two diverging verdicts in the u.s. midterm elections the republicans have retained their hold on the senate but the democrats are poised to take control of the house of representatives without going to take you to florida in the keeping a close eye on governor races and now we've got andrew get them giving his concession speech having just lost the seat that let's listen in to the question is we have a choice to make some more rewarding. are we going to wake up in baskin. sorrow in defeat or are we going to get up and reassert ourselves to the mission at hand
7:02 am
we're going to get up and fight for the things that we believe in are we going to get up. and say that we still deserve our seat at the table. i said before that i believe that we have to take have to have a table in this state that has long been a better is wide enough that is deep enough to fit all of us i still believe that we've got to have that table but you know we're just going to have to lou a little bit more work in order to build that table we're going to do a little bit more in order to make our way to it if there's not a chair there for us let's pull up our own folding chair let's make sure that people know we we plan to have a seat at this thing and that we will not be ignored that we will not be pushed aside that we will not be pushed into the shadows anymore that we're here and that we are here to stay you have to tell you i am blown away by the volunteers that joint with us on the trail i'm blown away by you
7:03 am
thank this was from the very beginning in extremely extremely difficult tasks i sincerely regret that i couldn't bring it home for you. it was but it was. true when i was but i can. i can i can guarantee you this i'm not going anywhere it was going so i was going to keep fighting. we're going to keep working we're going to keep believing and all of that i believe that ultimately we will be victorious we will be victorious so i want you to know on behalf of our families. that was so so so so appreciative and thankful for you
7:04 am
and we want you to know that we're going continue to lift our great state in prayer we're going to lift our great nation in prayer and we believe at the end of the day that we not us but we will still have the victory god bless you god. and god bless the state of florida and this great country that we get to call home take care everybody. and i had just been listening to the concession speech at the democratic candidate for governor of florida and galen he lost the seat to republican ron. let's go live to and gallagher who is in orlando florida and in this state once again living up to its unpredictable name because at some point the polls did have andrew gallop well in the lead.
7:05 am
and they did that was pretty early on it depends on which counties report first but nonetheless the race between given to scientists was so incredibly close just a few thousand votes between these two candidates and andrew given that clearly sounding deeply disappointed he ran a pretty amazing campaign he came from basically nowhere did a lot of social media really energized his base ran on a kind of progressive bernie sanders tight race would have been florida's first african-american governor if he had won but as conceded to rhonda stances a former naval officer who is really molded him self in the image of donald trump even running campaign ads on t.v. here in florida where he sat on the living room floor of his house with his two year old daughter building a wall and they were also reading together donald trump's art of the deal clearly that was something that paid off for ron to sometimes it was a risky strategy to really mold themselves. holding cell so closely to come on
7:06 am
strong but if this reflects the mood of the state then you can just see how close this race is in the senate race here is also very close we are down to the wire on that one and that's another very important race or watching that will close his well ok thanks very much for. having him results now we're going to go live to texas and. on to ted cruz giving his. age people who have been dependent on government for basic food needs now have jobs and get to come home carrying a bag of groceries get to come home and look at their kids and say i'm providing for my family and their kids get to look up at my mom look up in dad and see the hope this was an election about hope and about the future and the people of texas rendered a verdict that we want to future with more jobs and more security and more freedom in the eight and.
7:07 am
i want to take a moment also to thank my wife heidi. in the an ear who is my best friend in the world and who in the course of this campaign shoulder responsibilities at work at home juggling a thousand balls backwards on a unicycle. the and i want to thank our girls i want to thank caroline and catherine it is hard. having dad on the road all the time having mom on the road all the time it is hard and these girls pay a price and girls. mommy and i love you with all of our hearts. and
7:08 am
i could not possibly be prouder of the two of you i also want to thank my mom and my dad. their hair she didn't. we can say republican senator ted cruz thanking his family very emotional as he gives his speech in the state of texas that castration joins us live from tucson arizona and hide your cross what's happening at the border there in texas it was looking likely that ted cruz was going to win but there's a lot of talk about the basic rule effect. that's right you know cruz was always projected to be the winner in the polls in the deeply deeply conservative state of texas but o'rorke have really inspired the imaginations of democrats across the nation he raised double the money of cruz and he really seemed to have
7:09 am
momentum going into election day you just heard the victory speech of cruz and indeed he is the winner but not by a very big margin and that is still significant here it still shows that demographic changes are voter enthusiasm on among a growing left in texas is indeed growing here in arizona we're also watching another senate race that is much closer much too close to call at this point republican martha makes sally is still at a virtual tie in these early returns with her democratic challenger kiersten cinema and people are watching this as the second race next to texas which may really be inspired by the response to trump's rhetoric on immigration he was here campaigning on behalf of the republican candidate calling the caravan of immigrants from central america an invasion he promoted a racist political ad the try to equate the members of the caravan any of whom are
7:10 am
women and children with would be murderers once they arrive in the u.s. and he's been floating this idea of revoking birthright citizenship though it's protected in the u.s. constitution that kind of talk may have done the trick in texas though we won't know till the exit polls give us some more information but it may have indeed inspired trump's base of conservative white voters the same group that propelled him to the white house two years ago that now have delivered the win for ted cruz however in a place like arizona which is more a center than texas there's a large group of independents here one in three voters count themselves as such and there is a significant portion of latino's so early voting results as far as ter. now when it was massive here in arizona still too early to know what the results are but if latino's turn out in numbers proportionate to their population of eligible voters here then there is still a very good chance that the democrat may flip the seat from republican to democrat
7:11 am
ok ira thanks very much for the update there from arizona let's just take this opportunity now to bring you an update on the very latest results that we're seeing for the senate now we've got that republicans are reaching that magic number of fifty there week taking control of the upper house democrats trailing with fourteen still a number of seats left to call but democrats certainly for sure won't be taking the house the upper house is going to lower house house of representatives there's still everything to play for we've got democrats with a hundred and thirty five republicans with one hundred and forty three remember that magic number is two hundred and eighteen that's still an open race too early to call although some people are suggesting that the democrats are going to have more luck in the lower house of congress let's cross over now to alan fischer he's live for us on capitol hill and allan we're getting
7:12 am
a sense aren't we of the way the night is going how things shaping up. exactly and i think a few democrats were a bit worried we didn't see the blue we've materializing in early results is that a couple of big wins in virginia but then the momentum seem to slow but things have certainly picked up in the last couple of broadcast partners here in the united states are predicting that the democrats will actually win the house which is very much in line with what the polls we're seeing that are having such a good night in the senate again very much in line with what the polls we're seeing here's an interesting result has just come in judgment by the name of dave brat who's a republican congressman from the southern part of the state of virginia or. richmond which is the state capital he won his seat two years ago by fifteen points he's just lost to a democrat the you know have picked up fourteen seats by my reckoning the last one so that's thirteen in total so that puts them ten away from the figure that they needed to try and win the house and according to predictions that we're seeing the
7:13 am
could well go beyond that twenty three that they need and perhaps have quite a big majority history is being made with the elections in the house with two muslim women who have been elected to be the first muslim woman to self in the house of representatives. and or mark who was formerly a refugee they will know take their seats when congress convenes in january with the youngest woman ever elected to congress alexandra cortez who's just twenty nine she won as expected her seat in new york and a good night for native american women as well deb holland won as did david davis is very interesting because not only is she a native american woman she's a member of the l.b. chidi community too she's openly gay and she's also an m.m.a. fighter there have been interesting results too in governor races illinois and
7:14 am
michigan going for democrats but as you see a lot of the the senate still remains in the hands of the republicans so not a mixtape good night for the democrats and some donald trump says he'll have to work with the other side only something is going to have to consider if things go as we expect and democrats win the house and we do expect things to go that way because we are seeing associated press quoting the house for the democrats in office said there are still some seats left to go one way or the other we are hearing that the house of democrats and the house of congress has gone to the democrats what does that mean going forward for the next two years for donald trump . it's cool to me things vary and interesting for donald trump he was of course on the campaign trail a lot in the last few weeks saying look vote for republicans we can get an agenda pushed through we can talk about border security we'll get more money for the war we'll get this middle class tax cut suddenly invented just in the last couple of
7:15 am
weeks but of course he had. both senate and the house in republican neutral he was the president so the mix things slightly more difficult to push through his agenda so he is going to have to try and reach accommodation a couple of things that serious sanderson's press sector has been talking about is perhaps looking at the crisis in infrastructure to things that the democrats want to work on but there will be much more scrutiny of his administration though they're republicans were not very keen to say out of the committees to look into sent things that's not going to hold the democrats back to the point i was making earlier as well when the chairman of ways and means takes up his or her position they can request from the i.r.s. a confidential look at anyone's tax accounts they could do it to me if you live here in the united states they could do it to you and you know who else they can do it to they can do it to the president so they'll be able to look at donald trump's tax returns and of all the can't really make them public they don't need any
7:16 am
permission to look at them and they could call those inside the whole dynamic of donald trump. rules don't want to see rules how he governs will certainly change but just one point as i was making the last. don't look at the mid terms of saying well he's going to struggle in two years time clinton obama reagan just three of the presidents had but midterm results and then went on to win the next election ok thank you very much let's go live now to. one of the happy democrat elizabeth warren speaking with us and then was going to iraq we came to this fight for families trying to stretch a paycheck and for people living one moment away from a medical bill that would send them spiraling over a financial cliff. we came to fight for seniors trying to make it on social
7:17 am
security and for dreamers trying to make it in the only country they. the was the evil. we came to fight for workers who want to build a union and for unions who want to rebuild america's middle class. we thank you to fight for firefighters facing cancer for nurses busting their tails to save lives and for public school teachers reaching into their own pockets to buy crayons it was little. we came to fight for loved ones caught in the grip of the opioid crisis for families shattered by
7:18 am
gun violence and for communities of color devastated by a broken criminal justice system the ruta and we came to fight for decency we came to fight for justice we came to fight for change and now tonight we take that fight to washington to make our government who are. the rich and the rule thank you all right. it was. look. so tonight is a night to celebrate how far our movement has come but it is all. also a night to remember just how it began and let's make sure that
7:19 am
nobody rewrites history this resistance began with women and it is being led by women to the e.u. was probably two years ago. on a very dark election night millions of women watched in horror as donald trump was elected president they didn't like it. but they didn't whimper. and they fought back. look we don't look we didn't have them they paid and signs and they took to the streets
7:20 am
by the millions raising their voices until they could no longer be ignored they went to rallies they went to town halls they went to training sessions they became organizers fundraisers campaign managers by the dozens by the hundreds women who had never run for anything before stepped up to put their names on the ballot. look at the record breaking number of women as specially women of color including our on our press was the ebola and it was something they ignored the party bosses who said they should wait their turn they had nor the
7:21 am
consultants they said they should cover up their tattoos and smile more. and they ignored the powerful men of the republican party who never took them seriously anyway. look. they refused to let anyone shut them up or stand in their way and that is how real change big sweep the evil look. good look look it's there. we've seen white women learn from black women how to organize and mobilize the eagle thank all the women partnering with younger women to take to the street was married single
7:22 am
straight lesbian and trans women were rich and poor women building alliances with each other and you know building alliances with the men who also want to make real change. was look look. older. people who never thought of themselves as activists embraced their power took their seats at the table and inspired others why i shattered barriers broke more people who had always been told to wait and wait and wait decided the time for waiting was over and the time to act. was the look
7:23 am
look. so earlier this year i called one of those first time candidates a woman namely yuba gretchen surely. now leo who was running a tough race for congress and the pundits were given her no chance of winning none at all. well some of the elizabeth warren the speaking having just won the seat for the democrats in massachusetts as live to christen silly season miles pennsylvania and as it warms and someone to watch isn't isn't she kristen because she has been rejected to be a twenty twenty presidential hopeful. absolutely senator elizabeth warren is one of president trump's favorite sparring partners and it's a role that she seems to relish she has galvanized voters all over the country she's
7:24 am
a strong proponent of women's issues and minority issues as we just heard she's promising to bring more of the same in the coming term hasn't announced her candidacy yet but is widely expected to be considering one no surprise that she won reelection in the state of massachusetts nor was it a surprise that bernie sanders the former presidential candidate a democratic socialist from vermont won reelection there as well but. happy point for democrats around the country who look to these two figures to be leaders in the quest to take on president donald trump in the next two years and the next presidential election possibly. look at the bigger picture the way you are because a number of seats in that the east and. hoping to go to the democrats have they been doing a scene like a mini blue wave. yeah absolutely pennsylvania is very important for democrats in their quest to retake the majority
7:25 am
in the house of representatives they need a strong showing here in pennsylvania they have flipped three seed so far one here in the seventeenth district is north of pittsburgh conor lam defeated a three time incumbent keith profits here running on a hot form of bipartisanship talking a lot about health care and his desire to keep the affordable care act intact message that he reiterated before the cheering crowds here just a short time ago but he's not the only democrat to flip a seat year so far in pennsylvania two women have also won in their districts previously held by republicans mary gay scanlan and chrissy houlihan riding that pink wave that we heard so much about after the election of donald trump in a state that till now had no no women at all in their congressional delegation a state that's never had a female governor but saw an unprecedented number of women coming out to in this
7:26 am
year's elections and one other race that democrats have been eyeing is in the furthest first district that's in the suburbs of the philadelphia here and pennsylvania that one at this stage is too close to call there's a incumbent republican there he's a very moderate he's actually tried to distance himself from president in his campaigning he's running against a. democrat of course to give you an idea of just how important this race is to both parties twelve million dollars came into this race from national organizations a lot of it on the republican side in an attempt to keep that seat republican and right now it's just too close to call but overall a strong showing from democrats here in pennsylvania a state that. it's considered a swing state but did vote narrowly for donald trump in the two thousand and
7:27 am
sixteen presidential election. ok kristen i feel like you're the what last woman standing in the headquarters of democratic headquarters you can hear them packing up. very much for joining us from that offender phillip gray he's the assistant professor at texas a and m. university and political science faculty here in qatar and he is with us in this shit is so i was getting a sense on way that some of the results are coming in then we're getting an idea of how the next two years as shaping up we're not quite ready to call the house of representatives yet but there is the thought that the democrats will be taking it so how the next two years going to be looking for trump in some ways if the house goes to the democrats obviously that will limit his legislative abilities in some ways but it may also indicate increased level of partisanship as well potentially so for just looking at some of the losses that the republicans have had in virginia
7:28 am
ten district ten they've lost barbara comstock in florida twenty six they lost carlos capello both of them are centrist moderate republicans so in many ways what may be happening is those who might not necessarily be lead to get bush to tromp or some of the republicans that are losing meaning those who are still in the house maybe more than happy to support him which could be to a significant increase in partisanship in the house now if the democrats take the speakership then obviously you'll have much more direction in terms of where legislature is going but if the senate still remains with the house with republicans it looks like it will my suspicion is you'd probably see trump trying to focus more on things like judicial policy unlike where he has dominance inside one of the particular chambers. ok let's go live to talk to her as his home democrats say. we have other races in addition to our friend who was up early for poorly. hasn't started announcing their votes
7:29 am
but we have this fixed tackler candidate then steve sisler we still have a shot himself the kodo with billy sudden we still have a shot in georgia with stacy. i don't know if you were. to give it up for the head of the. governor jay inslee of washington. state take your word as a result of his work jared polis is now the governor of the. to ensure he can govern the state senate has flipped from republican to democrat. ned lamont is now the governor of connecticut. cuomo is reelected general mendoza reelected every other democrat for reelection is reluctant folks who are
