each month. we're not really talking about he said he said yesterday they'll do what they want to do and he'll do what he needs to do i don't know that there will be much of an appetite krysten all across this country and some of these democratic districts among the constituents for their members to be spending all of their time or even most of their time were faction their time investigating instigating trying to impeach and subpoena people that's a decision the only to make but you have to really give the voters what they want and as far as i can tell the heart many voters out there say you know i'm going to give you an affirmative because you've promised to investigate everybody you are impeach the president there seems to be no little appetite for that in fact i've hardly heard the words of russian collusion all night and i think there's something to that people are there talk about the economy they talk about health care the talking about immigration they certainly are talking about world. i should say national security around the world very happy with this president's policies to try to denuclearize the korean peninsula which helps everyone the remains of our fallen
8:01 am
from north korea from korea have been returned this president sanctioning iran sanctioning russia when these two pushing back on assad when he gasses his people not once but twice he showed a lot of strength and leadership around the world and many people may not say america first but they say stop apologizing for america i was appalled because on immigration it helped in the senate some of us was actually asked are all of the measures. well we'll talk to the lawyers about that halley we'll see what happens but again if that's the first order of business then you're going to have to ask the democrats a question you just asked me which is where do you think he can work with the president and with the white house on behalf of this country were willing to do it but that's also a question for them how are you going to posture that part of our party sentiment from this administration to a democratic where we've shown that we can i mean just two weeks going no you didn't feel like covering much of it for reasons i don't understand but just in the last week or two the president signed into law the most comprehensive historic bipartisan legislation in america's history on any one drug crisis and we've gotten
8:02 am
billions of dollars in new funding that passed the united states senate ninety one it passed the house with every single democrat voting in favor of it so we've shown that we prioritize issues that do you gather and gain a great deal of democratic support obviously the president's trying to work with democrats on some of his judicial and executive nominations he probably now has a majority proof. senate in the. kellyanne conway the counselor to president trump speaking to report says it's very late in washington d.c. there is a very positive spin on the night saying it was a great result donald trump a reflection of his policies let's go to a white house correspondent kimberly halakhah also she was saying that trump the first lady and the family is still up in the white house watching these results just behind way you are and we have been hearing from president trump which is one
8:03 am
tweet. less than his usual average but still. that's right the president did tweet i think this we're getting a bit of a pattern now in terms of the talking points from this white house because not only did kellyanne conway speak and that went on for about twenty five minutes sensually the president capping all of that in a tweet tremendous success thank you all but we know that the night doesn't appear to be a complete success because the republicans have lost it appears the control of the house of representatives how this is being characterized is that the president essentially went out and for every senate race tough senate race that he campaigned on there seems to be a victory for republicans so that is the essential spin that we're getting from this white house in fact prior to kellyanne conway speaking on the driveway in front of the west wing the press secretary sarah sanders also came out spoke to reporters saying that where the president campaigned in fact the united states
8:04 am
voters responded embracing the president as well as his policies and the so-called blue wave or democrats sweeping the house of representatives certainly hasn't materialized got a long night to go a lot of races left and at the end of the day the president's going to work with whoever comes into office we have a lot of things on our agenda and we look forward to getting them all done and anybody that was into supporting a blue wave tonight it's not going to get it maybe you get a ripple but i certainly don't think that there's only way or behind them look i think so far most of the races where the president is gone and those candidates are doing extremely well you also have to look at the fact joe manchin is one of the few democrat the only democrat to come out and vote for brett kavanaugh i think that's a moment that's probably helped him in some cases people that are embracing the president embracing his policies are doing well. so now it comes down to the hard work the president's legislative agenda could be stalled by the
8:05 am
democrats if they do in fact control the house of representatives it certainly seems to appear that that is in fact the case this is now with the white house's characterizing as a choice for democrats if they want to work with this president or if they want to continue what the white house says has been two years of resistance certainly the democrats have made no i have not been silent about the fact that they wish to potentially even move forward with impeachment proceedings this would certainly do rail donald trump's agenda ok kimberly many thanks for that update from the white house and. the president is still awake watching those results kathleen because there has been a major change in the us political landscape following tuesday's midterm elections it's gone five g.m.t. here in doha and donald trump's republican party has held onto control of the senate but the democrats have taken charge of the house of representatives that is
8:06 am
for the first time in eight years and this means that they will now have the opportunity to block a president trump's agenda over the next to get is so let's bring you a quick update on the latest results that we are seeing from the race for the senate and there we've got republicans the magic number of fifty one actually is one more than they needed is in this and democrats still trailing there with forty two there are a few more seats remaining to be cooled but republicans have convincingly taken control of the upper house as goes the lower house see what's going on. comes we've got a hundred and seventy two for the democrats not quite the magic number of two hundred eighty one but that is being projected to be reached republicans one hundred and sixty six we are calling it for the house of representatives this
8:07 am
short time ago we heard from a very happy nancy pelosi she is the democratic leader now of the house. is right there are democrats and republicans it's about restoring the constitution's jackson balances to the campaign and. it's about being the g.o.p. and my mitch mcconnell is the source on medicare medicaid your portable care and the health care of one hundred thirty million americans living with preexisting medical conditions. and the special interest free reign over washington lured in anything is that there was a new democratic majority will mean in the lives of hardworking americans well in just the past hour we've been seeing president trump tweeting about the elections he said tremendous success tonight thank you to you all live for
8:08 am
us now in the capital hills and we are calling it now for the house of representatives the hard numbers so that the democrats a lot of the way to go but the projections are that they are going to win all the seats that was still wasting or not seats anyway that they need to reach that magic number of two hundred and eighty. quite historic night i mean for the first time ever the united states in elections has voted in more than one hundred women voted in two muslim american women to congress first time that's ever happened to need to american women first time that's ever happened the elected a twenty one year old woman in new york the youngest woman ever to take her seat in congress and just as an example of how well the democrats have done in the last few hours they also won a seat in oklahoma which has been republican since one thousand nine hundred seventy five that's forty three years that's probably older than you a lot of joining me now is jason nichols who comes from the university of maryland
8:09 am
jason we've just been talking there pundits on american television are saying this is a bad night for the democrats they haven't done as well as expected this is been a really good night for the democrats and i'm one hundred percent agreement i believe this is a great night by an inch or by a mile if you take the house and all of a sudden you are able to put a check on this administration that's a great thing for democrats i think they need to celebrate of course some of those losing some of those governorships hurt but at the end of the day in terms of winning the house that's a good thing that was the thing the democrats wanted to do that's what they set out to do if they did picked up a couple of the governorships that have been the cherry on the cake what does winning the house mean for the trumpet ministration well they have to fear a lot of investigations that are going to come up democrats are going to be in charge of those committees so they're actually in trouble and we know that there's a criminal element in the trump administration they have been indicted several times so i think donald trump has plenty of reason to sweat right now is there
8:10 am
going to be a problem though that we're seeing a lot of young women a lot of young people being elected for the democrats but the leadership in the democratic party in the house seventy eight seventy nine seventy of the three main figures is that a danger that the leadership might be out of touch with first of all their own party and then their own. which of course i don't believe so i think a lot of the leadership moves with the trends of the party and they understand that i think that there are a lot of people who are against nancy pelosi and i don't really understand why she's one of the reasons we have the affordable care act which is what people are fighting for right now and why a record numbers of democrats came out in this election so i think a good mix of people both racially diverse religiously diverse and also diversity in terms of age is a good thing for the party but we've seen before obama midterms won the election clinton but men times won the election reagan we could name several of them this
8:11 am
isn't protect this doesn't necessarily mean great news for the democrats when it comes to the presidential election twenty twenty doesn't well it's no guarantee and this is electoral politics there's never a guarantee but again when you have states like georgia and florida and texas that are now in play that's great news for democrats even if they didn't win in those states the fact that they are even in play bodes really well for two thousand and twenty last question how do you keep the enthusiasm up among democratic supporters for two more years to get them out and these sort of numbers and more when it comes to the presidential election twenty twenty well i think one of the things that's going to happen we were i have such a large field of democratic candidates that people are going to stay excited we're pretty much going to go right into presidential season right after this midterm pretty much tomorrow so i believe that people are going to stay energized and donald trump never gives you a lack of material to get excited about or to get excited to stop just nicholson
8:12 am
invest in middle class very much indeed for joining his life here and i'll just say that is jason says nancy pelosi might hint that tomorrow is a new day in america but it also marks the start of the twenty twenty presidential election campaign because both parties will be had done heading towards that big date in november twenty twenty one. number of people who are disposable democratic challengers one of them. who came very close to unseating ted cruz is being suggested is one of the frontrunners. so that's happened in the last couple of hours. right now. listening to what he says is of course giving his concession speech every ball in tear every ambassador every one who knocked on doors everyone who made phone calls everyone who allowed themselves to hole and simple leave to be inspired by one another and to turn that
8:13 am
into action and into votes and to do something that no one no one thought was possible to build a campaign like this one subtly comprise of people people from all walks of life the eleven together the jamming the differences in deciding that what unites us is far stronger than the color of our skin how many generations we can count ourselves and american or whether we just got here yesterday who we love who we pray to a whether we pray at all who we voted for last time none of that small stuff matters now it is the greatness to which we aspire or the work that we're willing to put into it to achieve it by which we will be known going forward and this campaign holds a very special place in the history of this country every day forward the info you
8:14 am
have made that possible the e the e this team. this team of which we're all members in some way going to stay together is going to continue to aspire to do great things now it may be in individual races in individual communities it may have nothing to do with politics but just each of us and sometimes together finding the ways in which we make life better for one another in our communities in this state or in this country there are so many great candidates who are going to come out of this campaign whose work i look forward to supporting and following and cheering on
8:15 am
but just know this i am forever. i am forever changed in the most profoundly positive way i am forever grateful to every single one of you for making this possible i believe in you i believe in texas i believe in this country. the end. and i love you more than words can express an outlaw i hope persist every single day going for making sure that whatever we have created whatever we have changed and all of us will decide what that means and how far it goes if it leaves something far greater than what we have today you know all of us every single one of us continue to believe and make
8:16 am
possible the greatness of the united states of america the e.u. monarchy you have been able to do this with you i am grateful for ever and we will see you out there tell me how thank you i passed thank you texas thank you every single one of you for making this possible i am grateful i am grateful fake you. giving his concession speech that texas. adoring crowd could say and i don't but here he was saying just before we cut him that is a potential twenty twenty presidential contests are talking about the next election already we haven't even really got through this one but we should perhaps take a look at how tonight and set the scene for the next ten years. exactly right there will be those who will suggest that because donald trump has
8:17 am
lost the house that he has to be challenged in twenty twenty on the republican side so he's almost certainly going to face a primary challenge i would suspect jeff flake who was an arizona senator who stood down amid much criticism of donald trump is probably one of those who will stand against him but on the democratic side beto o'rourke challenger well yeah of course he is if he can start raising money the way he did for the texas race if we can bring that sort of in the asm then there's a possibility that he could well be one of the figures and twenty twenty but you're also looking at elizabeth warren retained her seat in massachusetts she's a democratic senator a camel a house whose democratic senator in california joe biden the former vice president could well throw his hat in the ring as well so as our guest was saying you know it could be a wide democratic field but you better believe that from to morrow people will be talking about it and remember donald trump has raised the normal amount of money
8:18 am
for his reelection we're talking over one hundred million dollars more than anyone has at this stage in this cycle before that's because very soon after he won he decided he was running for reelection with the slogan to keep america great so from and he loves going out on the campaign trail he loves being in front of a big crowd he will continue to do that over the next two years and you know if it becomes a battle about the economy and trade deals just signed a trade deal or is about to sign a trade deal with mexico and canada unemployment at it's louis three ever he managed to get a tax cut through both houses of of congress if it becomes an argument about the economy which very often it does it's going to be tough for the democrats to beat them but if they can generate the enthusiasm that they got for this election and possibly even expand that and keep it going for the next two years then it becomes a different sort of election but try it's it's hard to believe that would. getting the midterms into mourning the people's will be full of twenty twenty who's going
8:19 am
to stand against donate can't wait thank you very much for joining us there from capitol hill well there is some back to tonight's to the midterms and bring you an update on the latest results that we have been getting now from the race for the senate there it is republican still at fifty one very happy with that number because that puts them in control of the senate the democrats with fourteen to take a look now at the house of representatives were expecting some change where the democrats have gone up two hundred seventy nine and the republicans one seventy of course the magic number there is two hundred eighteen and we are calling it for the house of representatives in favor of the democrats because many of the cs all of the seats that they need to reach that magic number and perhaps more in safe democrat areas so the house of representatives has gone to the democrats the senate gone to the republicans so full of grace in the studio with me assistant professor
8:20 am
at texas and university we've got a split congress now does that mean we're going to have a stalemate in government in the u.s. for the next two years very possibly. especially given given who's winning and losing in the house and senate it seems that that's probably pretty likely so actually with the senate donnelly's laws is a good example so earlier some discussion of some members of the house representatives of the republican side who lost who tended to be more centrist or moderate donnelly a senator who was a democrat more willing to try and work with from loses to republican it seems that moderates in both parties are kind of those who might be interested in bipartisan erection kind of lost out in this election i can imagine that probably the house of representatives was spending a lot of its time then focusing on investigations. the senate will be focusing very much additional appointments actual legislation might be something that becomes
8:21 am
secondary for both of them at this point ok just stay with us for that which is going to bring out from pennsylvania this was a house seat i have the democratic candidates it's got wallace and. says hold on for a second that c. scott wallace has lost that states with forty eight percent that has in fact gone to brian fitzpatrick he has won it for the republicans with fifty one percent so that's a house seat in pennsylvania that we were watching many of the races for the senate have been very close what does that say can one tell us this one tells us that pennsylvania is definitely going to be a state to watch i mean oftentimes is a state to watch as elections go on but given how tight the races have been in pennsylvania it will probably have to somewhat of a bellwether when we're looking again to twenty twenty in terms of both presidential election others to see which way the country may be going in some
8:22 am
sense that. so unlike say in two thousand and ten so we get the pretty major losses the democrats had in the house or some others seeing so many close elections show that there is the there is certainly a great deal of enthusiasm for the base of the republicans and democrats among independents. it seems pretty evenly split in many ways and that may have a tendency of at least in some of these districts encouraging some bipartisanship and some of the members who have been elected to these just because it is so tight they can't necessarily. eliminate either their democratic or republican potential voters you were talking before about. potentially saying a decrease in the number of candidates all people have made it to the congress who are willing to be bipartisan and to work across the lines do you think that is a direct result of trump being such a divisive president and pushing a divisive campaign not necessarily certainly certainly think it helped but this is
8:23 am
a longer standing process in many ways i mean in many ways this kind of visit this has been going on for years now just because of certain elements of redistricting and also just some demographic changes we're starting to see to solidify a little bit more in districts so i mean for instance you could see similar types of lack of bipartisanship coming in two thousand and ten election. midterms at that point this is been kind of an ongoing trend in america in some ways you could say trump might be a symptom more than it costs of this kind of increased polarization you're seeing but if you're getting this increase what's happening to all people who are in the middle because american politics if you look at it from around the world as many of our viewers are it's just if one choice or another was in many other countries you've got a strong policy that a lot of the middle ground tend to drift toward so well we see a rise in the third party or rise in independents structurally not likely the
8:24 am
reason in america is because of how the electoral system works especially in the house of representatives it's pretty much structured in a way that's almost inevitably going to lead to a two party system. generally speaking of a third party would actually have that much prominence what would most likely happen is it would basically throw out one of the current parties and replace it as part of the. party system so with the last big incentive this would have been in the fifty's or sixty's when you had the democrats in the wood party the whigs get thrown out by the republicans which were going to paint a party that point and within two elections the whig party is basically ceased to exist just with how the structure of elections worked in the us if an independent party would arise it would effectively take out one of the other two but the third party would be a real viable one is probably not likely ok well just with our international viewers in mind tonight's been quite a domestic. bring in some more foreign policy issues here and trump of course has been making great many moves on the international stage and he's been pushing his
8:25 am
america first rhetoric now that the democrats have control of the house of representatives how far are they going to be able to block some of trump's foreign policy moves dreadfully only partially given that the house can affect things like budgeting and so forth and maybe make certain types of regulations dealing with trade deals with the like oradour interaction with states . they can have some influence but especially for talking about things like battle bilateral treaties or so forth under the american system is the senate that's responsible for basically signing off on confirming these things if the president is moving towards other treaties and so forth as long as he has the enough votes in the senate he can still do pretty much what he wants the house tends to be more limited or more interact one would expect probably would they would do instead be focusing on say focusing in terms of the budget about where money is getting spent where it's not to try and basically create incentives for trump to change some of
8:26 am
his policies in effect or to use that as pressure try and convince him to change his policies would be interesting to watch for a moment thanks very much for your analysis on the situation as it's unfolding let's go live now to castro she joins us from tucson arizona how do we watching two big senate races with the texas we know has gone to ted cruz the other one where you are arizona that was also a very close seat we know how that's going. that's right the night is not over here in arizona nor to toward westwards towards california and on words and here there is a still a chance that democrats may pull an upset and flip this senate seat from republican to their corner we're looking at less than five thousand votes with these early returns coming in that are separating republican martha mick sally from her democratic challenger kiersten samina and that this is widely seen in arizona as
8:27 am
a referendum on how trump has been addressing immigration this is a border state i'm standing just one hundred kilometers north of the mexican border and trump was campaigning here on the half a mic sally calling that caravan of central american migrants that are approaching the border an invasion he also promoted a racist political ad that tried to compare the members of the caravan who are in large part women and children with would be murderers in the u.s. and he's also been floating the idea of revoking birthright citizenship which is protected by the u.s. constitution that kind of rhetoric indeed sows division it is polarize of the electorate but it was successful in helping get into the white house to years ago and the question in arizona where one in three voters count themselves as independents is whether that kind of rhetoric may go too far yes it may indeed have
8:28 am
motivated trump's base to go out to the polls in arizona but it may also have turned off the moderates and outright offended the many latino voters who also holly arizonan home thirty percent of the population of arizona are people of hispanic heritage and we saw big voter turnout in arizona and the fact this race is so close i mean we're talking about arizona it's a red state that has not elected democrat to the senate in thirty years and now. cinema the democratic candidate is still within striking distance and in fact is still at this to stick high with a republican so really the night is still too early and this this race may be so close that it won't be called perhaps until much later tonight if not for days ok well we won't keep you up for days heidi but a few more how is at least just to get those results just to take a step back for a moment i know this is a john mccain area. john mccain how much does his legacy loom over
8:29 am
these that actions. that's right and of course john mccain who is a republican senator here that represented arizona for decades he passed away about two months ago of brain cancer he was very popular here in his home state and also around the country as knievel is prominent critic of president trump from within his own party mccain made a name for himself as a maverick and when he died about two months ago the entire nation came together in a moment of bipartisanship to mourn his passing except for donald trump who said very little about the late senator and the question was how would that brain the election for to replace mccain and to replace jeff flake the other republican senator who they keep his seat because he also criticized trouble realize he couldn't win a reelection and in the early stages of the midterm campaign we saw both of those candidates pearce's cinema and martha make sally trying to cast themselves within
8:30 am
mccain's big shadow exactly is also a former fighter pilot as mccain was and here's a cinema try to cast herself as an independent a maverick herself who often broke from her national democratic counterparts but i have to be honest in the last few weeks trump successfully turned the national conversations around in these midterms to his signature issue of immigration and very few voters i spoke with in arizona even mention the name of mccain so that really shows how divisive this election became how much of a referendum it has become on donald trump's presidency and it remains to be seen whether that independent streak continues to live on in arizona after mccain's passing laura ok heidi for a moment thanks very much for bringing us the latest from arizona. she's an assistant professor of public policy at harvard university and she joins us live
8:31 am
from washington d c has this been a good night for the democrats. i think it has been an unexpected night for the democrats and a good night for the democrats and they're going to claim it as a very loud victory for the party. what has been the main issue that the democrats have one loss about what trump has been talking about heidi that was talking about immigration the economy is over see a big pulling point for for the republicans we're looking at the democrats something we haven't talked about much is health care and husband been a big issue for them so when you look at when you actually break down returns and you see the areas where democrats have done really really well they have won on issues like trade taxes and the economy so opposition to trump's donald trump's policies so they've been erie is where residents were constituents have really been
8:32 am
hurt or been felt the brunt of donald trump's policies they've also were done really well in areas that have been receptive or hungry for some kind of policies oftentimes progressive policies on issues like health care issues like gun control the environment so we're seeing those kinds of things across the country and i should also clarify one point that i made earlier even as the democrats claim this is a victory tonight we also know that donald trump is going to claim this is a victory for republicans as well so we're continuing to see these divisions in these clashes that have you know defined the lead up to the midterm elections those will absolutely continue after the midterm elections are all settled and done when they want to look at has been a big good night for the democrats but it's also been a good night for firsts hasn't seen this sort of what's called cultural wave or what has been called a cultural wave many women many tea muslims last see the candidates running and in
8:33 am
many cases winning. absolutely so we've seen that over one hundred women were elected to the house or two in into politics this year setting a record that's just unheard of that hasn't happened before the youngest person in congress was just elected in this woman and congress was elected and they actually were neck and neck between two candidates and very different parts of the country both elected as democrats as the youngest people on people in the house we've also seen muslim candidates we've seen a openly gay governor elected the native american kansas latino candidates and texas black women in connecticut and massachusetts so we actually are seeing a number of historic firsts happening in the political arena in the midterms even in the myths you know even as the.
