works in favor of the alliance to move prosecutors say a whistleblower alerted them that going conspired to under-report his salary by about forty five million dollars at use nissan's money to finance homes from brazil to beirut. i'm very surprised that this happened to the leader of the company that makes the car i drive i really hope this is some kind of mistake. go on has been credited with reviving nissan and forging a formidable alliance with mitsubishi and reno there are a lot of people on the board of all these companies and i know how to run a car company but the problem is his job was to knit together all these different interests and try and you know forge ahead with this kind of integrated global carmaker and without him there is hard to see that happening news of his arrest reverberated in france where the country owns a fifteen percent stake in reno that dumped on gets you know the state as a shareholder will be extremely vigilant regarding the stability of the alliance

and of the renault group. at the peak of his career go earn the nickname mr fix-it and was the subject of a popular japanese comic with the arrest a nissan executive is calling him greedy and saying the allegations show a dark side of the goan era that is now over the palestinians have welcomed the move but lawyers in israel have launched a class action lawsuit against air b.n. b. the company is removing its listings of properties in illegal settlements in the occupied west bank stephanie decker reports. it's a rare victory for human rights groups who've been lobbying to stop commercial rentals in the illegal israeli settlements for years air b.n. b. is sent an important message to the rest of the business community that it really isn't possible to do business in or with settlements without contributing to inherent serious violations of international humanitarian law and the human rights

of palestinians however it was acquiescing to a policy in which palestinians idea holders are not allowed to enter settlements soley because of who they are and it appears to be the only case in the world for which air b.n. b. hosts are mandated by law to discriminate based on national origin u.s. based accommodation booking website air b.n. b. issued the announcement the day before human rights watch was due to issue a report on bed and breakfast in the settlements specifically case studying the activities of air b.n. b. and booking dot com in a statement on line air b.n. b. says when we applied our decision making framework we concluded that we should remove listings in israeli settlements in the occupied west bank that are at the core of the dispute between israelis and palestinians palestinians say the settlements are one of the main obstacles to any future peace talks they are illegal under international law and their physical presence or an across the

occupied west bank make the prospect of a cohesive palestinian state far more difficult. when israeli minister has called for air b.n. b. to be banned in israel following the announcement in the illegal settlement of a threat the mayor had this to say the decision made by the administration of air b.n. b. to out these properties into dance america is extremely upsetting it's giving in to extreme people who don't have any intention in promoting peace but driving people bringing people further away from one another it's not going to promote peace it's going to promote the semitic decisions made by such an organisation palestinians have welcomed the announcement and announcement that we're told no one expected course we very much welcome this decision and we believe that this decision is very very important. company turf and company will do the same as soon as possible for now air b.n. b.

says it will remove the listings from its site denouncement won't change much for palestinians on the ground but rights groups say it's an important way in which highlights the issue of illegal settlement expansion and if who has access to land which remains at the very heart of this conflict what a difference a year makes this time twelve months ago bitcoin mania was all around but the crypto hype hasn't been matching reality lately big corn is down around seventy five percent from its all time high nearly twenty thousand dollars depending on what exchange you're looking at the other major digital coins are also feeling the pain the sell off is being blamed on a regulator repression. now the u.s. justice department is reportedly looking at whether last year's one thousand five hundred percent big corn rally was jew to manipulation it is part of
7:38 am
a bigger government crackdown on fraud in the digital currency industry and then there's disagreements and rivalry within the industry itself all of this helped cool the height digital assets have now lost almost seven hundred billion dollars of market cap since crypto mania peaked in january we're joining us now from london is dr gary calm an economist at the london school of economics and head of research at block chain dot com thanks very much for being with us so where do you stand on crypto currencies then is this the future or are we looking at a bubble that's burst. so we've seen prices of crypto assets like big coin go up and down in the ten years that they've been exist in existence because we just celebrated its ten year anniversary last month it's a new asset class it's uncertain how we should value it and the type of volatility we're seeing is not a surprise however i think there's a growing acceptance an acknowledgement by just not just technologists but also
7:39 am
regulators that blotching technology and crypto currency are very much part of the future architecture of our financial system we talk about regulation that if there's going to be more regulation. of this system what form would that take right so that's been one of the big questions overhanging crypto assets is the lack of regulatory clarity we're getting more clarity as we go along we had an important in foresman action from the u.s. securities exchange commission recently on two a.c.o.s. that i think created more clarity around you know what's considered a security what type of registration process i suppose will need to go through a kind of penalties will be enforced for not for failing to to register you know we also are hearing some word that the department of justice is just justice is investigation into big point price manipulation is progressing all these things are going to help bring greater regulatory clarity and remove this kind of cloud i
7:40 am
think that's hanging over this space and preventing things like. e.t.f. from being introduced into the market to make it easier for investors to actually trade a known crypto assets was there was there market manipulation going on when it when it came to the whole rally. so that's something that the authorities are investigating there certainly has been some work done by you know academics and others looking at trades on certain exchanges that do look suspicious i think there is a big question mark around that there's questions around how much trading volume is real and how much of it is spoofed or is washed trading i think there's a general consensus that there has been some some you know monkey business basically at work at some exchanges at least and that's all part of the maturing of the space and something that needs to get cleaned up for institutional investors and retail investors feel more confident comfortable owning crypto assets and what about all of the disagreements within the developed when the developers community i
7:41 am
mean how much of a factor is that in all of this that is certainly a factor i think the the recent big cash contentious hard for which the coin cash was actually a fork a big question last summer certainly created some uncertainty and fear there's been some threats and none of this i think makes people comfortable with you know how stable certain you know large assets are it's certainly i think it's played a role in the recent price correction which has been quite dramatic at the same time we're seeing a lot of positive developments the transaction volumes on the big block chain have been growing up from around two hundred thousand per day to around three hundred thousand roughly over the last six months you know blace dot com has seen steady growth in the number of wallets the recent air drop of one hundred twenty five million dollars worth of x l m has been very well received great uptake there so there's fundamental improvements that we're seeing that don't necessarily align with the recent price action and as far as all of the hype that surrounded. it particularly been a year ago in the marketing around this is there
7:42 am
a sense that inexperience day in vesta's would being let in without really knowing without really having full knowledge of what they were getting into i think there certainly has been some fraud and some scamming going on. there's no question about that you know we've seen the f.c.c. and other regulators take action against some of the more egregious. ploys and you know unfortunately with any new technology we saw this with the early internet you know bad actors are often some of the earliest adopters and we need to i think anyone trading crypto assets does need to to do their homework and to to really look you know under the hood of what exchange or what project they might be interested in there is still a lot of need for greater regulatory clarity better data better research all these things are happening but they take time good to speak with the garrote holman in london thanks for being with us thank you and finally government leaders in

tanzania may soon have two hundred thousand tons of cash to not some their hands they plan to buy the entire crop to try and end a price dispute between farmers in trade is catherine sawyer reports from the south of the country. di nest number have a sting the last of her cash crop that it's been. a disease or dries of food has men she's only managed to fill seven sacks instead of the usual forty on average to make matters worse middlemen offered to buy them at and acceptably low price that course the government to intervene and buy tanzania's and hire at a dollar and a half a kilo the government's also undertaken to process and sell it or. what they wanted to buy from us at a cost that will not get any returns we spend so much on fertilizes the way the government has intervened is good. the cash in us will end up in warehouses like
7:44 am
this would be leased by the government officials here and military commanders are walking out logistics to make sure the process is smooth and there's enough room to store around two hundred thousand tons of knots. and she can and i want to you see we want you the public to coordinate with the military we need strong young men to load the trucks. in. tanzania is one of the world's largest cash not producers and the major foreign exchange. president john mark foley has some ministers and government workers for failing to deal with the matter price crisis this move by the government to buy up all the cash and nuts from families in the south is unprecedented the president has ordered the agriculture development bank to pay up and for the military to coordinate trucking the nuts to warehouses traders and middlemen are being left out

at this time of the year processing plants such as this one should be busy preparing exports most have shut down and those still operating will soon follow. come to london helps run the factory he says a fall in cash and prices because of a subclass in the wild market has made it difficult for traders to buy from a firm as are the government's set price. what with close to some operations and laid off two hundred people next week when this process is done will have to send another two hundred home must be finished packaging the other one hundred will have to do some to say they're ready to talk to the authorities and to reach an agreement but for now the government is firmly in charge of what is tanzania its most important cash crops. all right that is our show for this week remember you can get in touch with us by tweeting me at as i'm a seeker and use the hashtag a.j.c. to see when you do or drop us an e-mail counting the cost at aljazeera dot net is

a deep reservoir of tonic billeted and if you can give them the opportunity the wonderful things start to happen sometimes the simplest seditions all the missed and packed for am petrarca we're going to act that way now back to. the main things that sets out zero apart from other news organizations is that a lot of our reporting is about real people what about ideas or politicians or what they may want to do but how policy and how events affect real people it's ok for something a. little more complicated operations have to be if this is not an act of creation i mean i don't know if the walking. around like my family's status and wealth has benefited from not their choice to enslave. some of us so stai risky to speak out as a surprise that. this job isn't just about what's on a script or a piece of paper it's about what is happening right now.

gunman calmly walking up before attacking china's consulate in karachi the new opposition hoping to shake up next month's presidential elections this is in democratic republic of congo. and major climate report contradicts the president saying global warming is here and it is getting worse. so the pressure is building on the u.s. president to act on intelligence reports that suggest the saudi crown prince was involved and journalist jamal khashoggi a senior figure in the democrat party has told the washington post that donald trump's response to the killing will now become part of an investigation by a congressional panel meanwhile we've got new details emerging from turkey's investigation first of all out has been al-jazeera has been told the killing inside
7:50 am
saudi arabia's consulate in istanbul was actually planned twelve days in advance sources say phone calls between the saudi consul general a leading member of the hit squad and the top aides to mohamed bin someone an al being analyzed there's another unidentified voice that can be heard in one of the calls we've also got the saudi crown prince continuing his first trip abroad since the murder of two rivers regional allies aimed at boosting his international standing he got a warm welcome in the u.a.e. . he is expected next in behind and in egypt and also turkey's foreign minister says the saudi crown prince has requested to meet to reject the tired one at the g twenty summit in argentina next week turkish president yet to respond to that one so let's start with rosalynn jordan she is in washington d.c. for us hi residents talk about this congressional panel who is driving this. well in an op ed column in the washington post the california congressman adam schiff who is going to be the new chair of the house intelligence committee come january
7:51 am
says that yes he is going to convene a full hearing on the u.s. intelligence community what it knows about the murder of jamal. and what the trumpet ministration has been doing or not doing in response to the evidence gathered by u.s. intelligence schiff tells the washington post that it's important to get a baseline to basically figure out what is it that the cia and the other fifteen intelligence agencies that make up the intelligence community what do they actually know what evidence do they have what information have they not been able to confirm or refute that way they can actually determine whether or not the u.s. president donald trump is in fact ignoring the conclusions as has been reported by a number of news organizations that as far as the cia is concerned this saudi government did plan and order and carry out the murder of jamal khashoggi back on
7:52 am
october second so that's the first thing that adam schiff wants to do he also wants to take a look at the financial relationship between the united states and saudi arabia and more particularly at what financial interests the u.s. president donald trump might have it with saudi arabia and whether those interests are in any way influencing his judgment again he says that he can't get a firm determination on that without having the evidence examined and shipped also made a point that it's very important for the u.s. house to get on the record trumpet ministration officials to talk about how they've been gathering intelligence how they've been processing and analyzing it so that there is a better understand. being in both houses of congress just how this administration is dealing with information that is classified at best and drives some of the most
7:53 am
important foreign policy decisions that really any u.s. government would want to make i think rosalynn it's always important to ask you and for you to explain for our international audience how much power such a panel would have when you're talking about the different branches of government when you're talking about a president who likes to take action on his own. well for people who don't understand the way that the u.s. government has set up under there under our constitution congress is the first body of government that is mentioned it has the power of the purse it has oversight ability it has the ability to hold people and institutions in contempt and theoretically have them jailed if they don't follow congressional will and obviously congress passes laws which it's then the responsibility of the president to sign and then to execute so it has a rare e verify powerful role in the u.s.
7:54 am
government you hear so much talk and you read so much about the power of a strong president while that is necessarily checked by the work that the house and the senate do working in tandem sometimes working at cross purposes but at the end of the day the two houses of congress are as equally powerful as is the president and so there is this this sense of checks and balances which doll trump seemingly would like to ignore but this is a fundamental tenet of the u.s. constitution so when adam schiff says he wants to call in jena wrangle the hassle excuse me the director of the cia or he wants to call in dan coats who is the overall director of national intelligence or he wants to call in the head of the national security agency the eavesdropping the wiretapping agency that listens to signals and conversations and reads e-mails for in foreign governments all over the
7:55 am
world. that is a power that the congress actually has there's nothing that donald trump or any us president could do to stop adam schiff or any other member of congress from calling in people to explain the work that they are doing that is constitutionally mandated it is a fundamental tenet of the way the u.s. government is set up always worth explaining i think it is and thank you for that rosalynn jordan live in washington d.c. the latest from turkey now on the investigation this in kosovo you with more from. it's been weeks after damascus you just killing and every day we have a new information coming up according to the latest information al-jazeera gathered from the turkish sources is that martyr optimism a trip to the close security guard of the crown prince mohamed bin sandman has had four phone conversations with southall kaftan in the private aid of the crown prince and in one of those phone conversations there were the there was a third was identified by the turkish officials and they said triangle of believe
7:56 am
that this more spin longs to mohamed bin sound man the crown prince but of course for now until the technical analysis conclude that way they can't confirm that it belongs to him mohamed bin salman and they tell us that since the had these phone calls with his saudi mobile phone saudi mobile line they are not able to identify the source very clearly and they need technical support from the united states so it will be an important detail to see who that to whom that third worst belongs to also their other details which shows that this murder was premeditated for instance consul general of istanbul mama della tavi has been named as the prime suspect of this. of this crime all along with him three other saudi national consulate employees are named to be prime suspects as well. and consul general had
7:57 am
three form talks to sell their cattle in the according to turkish officials he has also exchanged one e-mail with them as i said to technical analysis continue and they are they haven't been able to figure out what the content of those phone calls and e-mails were because we were told that they were talking they were using some code and some secret words in order to in order to avoid to show what they are really talking about also another saudi official who is now. to be one of the members of the saudi intelligence extend the voice mails voice messages on what's up on the day. it was murdered and he exchanged those messages with three and i look at. so turkish security sources and the third for security is really believe that this has been a very strongly preplanned murder just one of the note here the washington post has
