this is an opportunity for countries around the world that have supported afghanistan to show they will continue to support but particularly with an emphasis on peace with the prospects prospects for peace continuing to improve tell me more about that improving i mean you could look at it and think well three u.s. soldiers have just been killed and more of being killed in the last thing that's the most that have been killed in the last seventeen months but you're saying the prospects for peace are good can you elaborate on that a bit. the prospects for peace are good first of all because the people of afghanistan both those who support the government and those who support the taliban really wanted a three day cease fire that both sides agreed to back in june produced an overwhelming. surge of support for peace on all sides and the fighters on both sides passed the message that they were tired of fighting tired of killing each other and wanted peace so there's a dynamic for peace there also i think both sides have recognized they cannot win

militarily the government does not have the strength to take over all the rural areas that the taliban is strong in but the taliban does not have the ability to to take over and any of the urban areas where most of the population lives and where the government has very strong control so in this situation of stalemate which it's been for about three years now peace is really the only only way forward for most of the people involved but how does the taliban shape up as a peace partner or even just as we can say in the goshi is it a strong cohesive group where if they say yes or no to something at these sorts of talks then it will be implemented. the taliban are a strong and cohesive group but in that strong cohesive group there are different views some people still some of the taliban leaders still want military victory others are very ready for peace but the taliban moves by consensus so that's going

to be a slow process the recent naming by the taliban of several former older taliban leaders to lead peace negotiations was a step forward the fact that over the three months or so that ambassador homicide has been the special envoy he said two trips and very intense mc discussions with a range of taliban leaders most recently in doha where the talks went on we understand for three days the these are unprecedented the u.s. has met with the taliban before over the last eight years have been a lot of meetings but this is the first time there's been real discussions at the same time it's not clear yet that the taliban militants the ones who want to continue to win militarily are ready to buy into peace that's still to be determined and president trying to see a factor in all of this and you know hesitant to bring everything back to him but his afghan strategy. well his afghan strategy of a year ago which was to stop having a time time limited deadline the way president obama did and to commit to

issues of intellectual property theft must be solved. force technology transfers must be solved. significant tariffs and non-tariff barriers must be solved issues of ownership have to be solved. president will probably reiterate his view. we want a world ideally of. zero tariffs zero non-tariff barriers and zero subsidies. now whether they can get through all that remains to be seen but that's the president's point of view as i said just a little while ago u.s. is coming to this summit in very good shape our economy is quite strong it's growing at three percent over the past year second quarter was four point two third quarter was three point five perhaps the revised upwards very strong holiday season

so called black friday very strong we've had tremendous investments business investments and energy investments while prices and gasoline prices coming down that helps consumers of course we're in very good shape. china not so good i'm not here to critique or second guess the chinese economy but most observers believe china to be in a slump whereas the united states is in a very strong solid position going into this summit however again to repeat president said there is a good possibility. that we can make a deal and he is open to it. but on the other hand if these conditions i mentioned a few moments ago are not met not dealt with. now the president has said look. he's perfectly happy to stand on his terra policies which.
