just before. the blue economy making a splash in kenya. counting the cost on i just knew. this is. why i'm richelle carey this is the news hour live from doha coming up in the next sixty minutes it's supposed to be about the global economy but at the g. twenty summit in argentina side issues take center stage. the cranium government blocks russian men of military age from entering the country as tensions with moscow rise. more bad news for a zimbabwe's struggling economy. on paul reste coming up in sports world governing

body. opens an investigation after the afghanistan women's team accuses men and the football federation of sexual abuse. leaders from around the world are in argentina but at this year's g twenty summit a lot of the attention is going to things that aren't on the formal agenda they include tension between russia and ukraine which u.s. which led u.s. president donald trump rather to cancel his one on one meeting with russia's vladimir putin many countries are also waiting to see whether talks between trump and china's president xi can ease the growing trade war between the world's two largest economies and then there is the presence of saudi crown prince mohammed bin solomon who's making his first trip outside the middle east since last month's murder of saudi journalist so i have a lot to to get. we have correspondents in one of ours of course in
9:02 pm
a moment we'll talk to alan fischer about the crown prince comments from world leaders to the saudi crown about the saudi crown prince and murder he is standing by at the cologne theater where leaders will attend a cultural event in the coming hours first let's get to kimberly how get this outside the customer a side official residence of the president of argentina so camberley there are all is a lot of focus looking ahead to the meeting between the chinese president and donald trump on saturday what can we really expect any type of breakthrough in this tit for tat trade war. well donald trump speaking to reporters in just the last hour or expressed a significant amount of optimism in terms of that deal in fact he said i think that china wants to strike a deal i think that we've liked to but a lot of people say that this is just sort of donald trump's typical enthusiasm
9:03 pm
when he's trying to get something to the finish line because there are some pretty challenging goals in order for the united states and china to strike an agreement essentially the united states and the u.s. congress has been pushing the trumpet ministration on this one are calling for china to end what the u.s. calls predatory trade practices essentially intellectual property theft cyber attacks and also dumping cheaply made goods into the u.s. market in order for this agreement to take in fact donald trump has always said that china needs to make major concessions economic advisor said that's what they're looking for china has always said yes we're going to do that but the actions have never followed the words so the united states is looking for this in some sort of concrete form or fashion in terms of an agreement whether or not that will really happen that is sort of the deciding factor in trying to come to some agreement well the two leaders are here when a sarrasin as you point out their meeting on saturday to try to do that cautiously
9:04 pm
optimistic but many people say it's a goal they are unlikely to achieve ok there has been an agreement of sorts between the u.s. and mexico and canada after a lot of a lot of hard work they have reworked nafta what are some of the details that this can really. yeah well the details are essentially that this is kind of a re framing of the u.s. or rather the north american free trade agreement that was in place for twenty years and as sensually what donald trump has argued and this is the feeling of many politicians in the united states is that decimated the manufacturing industry in the united states and so when donald trump came into office he promised to renegotiate this deal to try and bring back some of those industrial manufacturing jobs and this is a promise he's made to his base now he has kept it or at least he's portraying this is being kept because there was a signing ceremony here between the canadian leader justin trudeau as well as the
9:05 pm
mexican leader pena nieto as well as donald trump but many people say donald trump's celebre tory mood is a little bit premature that's because this deal needs to be ratified in the u.s. congress under u.s. law and now that we've had midterm elections back in the united states democrats taking control of the lower house the house of representatives that could prove more difficult than donald trump has let on and we expect it will be smooth sailing in mexico and canada even though canada is a little bit unhappy with the name justin trudeau when he was here kept referring to this is the new nafta it's actually called the u.s. m.c.a. canada being at the end that reflects a bit of the sour notes perhaps because what wasn't lifted in this deal or the tariffs donald trump put on canadian aluminum steel into the united states ok i'm not feeling exactly celebrate or in contrast to donald trump donald trump and his classic form in fashion always the marketer portraying this perhaps somewhat prematurely as a victory ok kimberly how could live for us some kind of stars kimberly thank you
9:06 pm
let's go to alan fischer now of course the other major story that is kind of overshadowing the g. twenty is the presence of the saudi crown prince mohammed bin solomon how he will be received of course this is after the murder of saudi journalists so. talk about how this is gone now and some of the interactions that he's had with people. well certainly there were the diplomatic niceties that you would expect at a g twenty when the crown prince mohammed bin salman showed up he was greeted by president machree the horse the president of argentina he then moved into the main room and that's when the foreign ministry up its social media game by tweeting pictures of anyone that the saudi crown prince came across we know that just in the last half hour or so or that is exchanged pleasantries with donald trump there has been an exchange between the american president and the saudi crown prince you'll remember that the american president has perhaps been the saudi crown prince is biggest supporter since the cia concluded with
9:07 pm
a high degree of certainty that mohammed bin selman was responsible for ordering the murder of jamal khashoggi donald trump says that there was no conclusion reached which strictly speaking is true but the cia are pointing the finger there was meant to be there was talk there could be a bilateral between the two but that donald trump said simply wasn't going to happen and so the exchange pleasantries according to the white house storefront was asked about it he said there was no discussion we might but there was no discussion so he's holding out the possibility that before the g. twenty is done there could be a longer more substantive discussion with the saudi crown prince certainly president mccraw of france he has had a discussion with the saudi crown prince part of it was caught on camera we can hear press that mccrone same but you never listen to me and the crown prince saying that he will we know or from the elysee palace that the french president has told the crown prince that he wants to see international experts involved in the
9:08 pm
investigation of jamal khashoggi is murder and then there was the bizarre moment inside the hall itself when vladimir putin walked in saw the saudi crown prince and didn't just shake his hand but actually gave him a high five before the two of them seem to enjoy some sort of joke then there was the family photo which is when all the leaders get together. mohamed bin someone stood rather awkwardly to the right of the gathering no one came over to speak to him immediately everyone was interested to see who would be placed next to him in the picture and it turned out that it was an investment banker who was placed there interestingly enough at the far left of the picture that's where president of talk it was place these things aren't a coincidence that was done deliberately in fact president walked past mohamed been summoned to get to his place both men they never looked at one another and certainly never said anything to one another we nor the president not to have argentina had initially planned to have
9:09 pm
a bilateral with mohammed bin salman that has no been canceled but given the twenty leaders in a room we will get more interactions like we just saw from donald trump when there will be an exchange of pleasantries when they may well shake hands when they may have very brief conversations that theresa may the u.k. prime minister has said that she intends to talk to mohammed bin salman at some point during the meetings today she is going to raise the water in yemen she is going to talk about the murder of jamal khashoggi what she didn't say she was going to raise is whether or not the u.k. will follow the example of others who have decided to ban weapons sales to saudi arabia for the time being that is unlikely given that after the united states the u.k. is sodium maybe is biggest arms supplier or alan light for some fantasize allan thank you. take a deeper dive into this without a serious senior political analyst mark who joins me live on set so the word out of
9:10 pm
saudi arabia was that. and donald trump had discussions the word from the white house is no it was just pleasantries are you surprised at the white house pushback considering donald trump basically sided with muhammad and solomon even over his own intelligence community that's true but he's also have facing a lot of problems at home notably from congress because of his way of handling the case and there is of course reports that congress want to open an investigation of the way that president trump have dealt with this question and whether he had any conflict of interest involved in all of this so there is that but there's also the question of who has more stake in such a meeting if it ever took place and the nature of that meeting certainly not trump rather the saudis. wants to show his own public opinion and others around the world that he is a normalized leader accepted lead there by the leader of the free world by the
9:11 pm
american president and hence that it is. as it is customary it is no normal for him to be meeting and talking their marriages are saying look you know they met on the sideline but this is not a meeting that this is casual and so on so forth and that's what people go to some it's like that happens at these events that's why they go per size the on the one hand there is the the business of the day the official business as it were when they all sit on the big table and deal with papers as already been presented them prepared by their own. secretary of treasury is all or ministers of economy and so so forth and foreign ministers and then there is all these bilat totals and others that they place on the sidelines and i think the side of the way by a very important so you have everything from. talking about the crisis between reno and b. son and the whole you know issue with the with the carbon faction business and of course you know the record option accusation against the c.e.o.
9:12 pm
and all of that and then you have. cycles girl president my conference i'm sort of in of the past. present micro friends having the side conversation with the crown prince and basically giving him a dress down about the way the saudis handled the investigation and why apparently the french president want the crown prince to continue with the investigation and he suggests that there should be an opinion and international. players or investigators within this team that investigate sort of a lot of things go on on the sidelines so is did a home have been someone half to show up for this thing to do it did he have to do this of course you know being royalty and all that he doesn't have to but under the circumstances and after seven weeks of the kinds of scrutiny he faced scrutiny i must say that went beyond what we've seen after three wars of three years of war
9:13 pm
in the ne that likely caught him off guard exactly you know because he thought after three years of being basically invincible right acting with total impunity torturing a country next door to invading get than launching a war getting you know many many many thousands of human a thing a former minister of an allied country manufacturing a crisis one of the neighbor in this case got the. you know walking a number of tens of businessmen and cousins and all. there's and giving him a beating in a hotel room and all of that all of that when not i noticed but that wasn't the kind of scrutiny we face since the very gruesome murder of about hostages so yes as you said he was he was called of god and he had to go to this very important. summit because over there he is among the twenty most important leaders in the world and he could normalize himself as another importantly they're joining the
9:14 pm
important leaders now the problem is being in that conference everyone knows that he is the problematic figure and that he is the bishop's reckless man who actually caused them all stomach heartache and all kinds of aches because of the way he behaved because for a few of them at least russia i'm sure they're probably lecturing him that's not how you kill we'll tell you how to kill there's a better way of killing than simply to massacre people because the way he leaders the way countries conduct wars always lead to death i mean this is the norm international relations wars and so on so would he to death and every other country in that scene had had a war and leaders are responsible for the death of any combatants or sometimes civilians to call them collateral damage but what they don't do is short to be responsible for the killing of
9:15 pm
a journalist the way the saudi crown prince to morrow thank you very much joining us on that. but in your head in the news hour and clearing rain pours down on thousands of asylum seekers stuck in mexico determined to travel to the u.s. . i want to half a million children need urgent aid and central african republic will have the latest on what's been called the world's forgotten conflict. and fan violence in argentina spain being chosen to host. the for the doors final but the two finalists have appealed against the move to madrid that's coming up with paul. actions against ukraine over the disputed region of crimea are also a major issue at the g. twenty. it's moving the ukrainian sailors that capture to a prison hospital in moscow that they were detained off the coast of crimea ukraine
9:16 pm
has banned russian men age sixteen to sixty from entering the country the latest measure in a week of tension following russia's seizure of three ukrainian ships in the black sea or a challenge and following those developments from moscow. i don't friday the crimean commissioner for human rights said that the twenty four captured ukrainians were no longer on the peninsula he said he didn't know where they were but they've been taken away makes me by the f.s.b. the russian security service federal security service what we understand now is that they have been moved from crimea to moscow and they're being held in the force of a prison the force of it is a fairly notorious jail that was in stalinist times run by the n.k.v.d. stalin secret police as a kind of torture center basically then the n.k.v.d. became the k.g.b. these days the force of her is run by the ministry of justice but it does still have very close ties connections with russia security services what we know is that
9:17 pm
twenty one at least of these ukrainians are being held in the quarantine section of the prison the international red cross has been talking to russia about whether they might be able to get access to the men to check if they're being held in correct conditions there are three that are unaccounted for at the moment and we have to assume that those are the three that are injured and the reports going around of the measurements are that those three are being held in a prison hospital from kharkiv not far from the russian border here is andrew symonds with the impact of the crane ban on the entry of russian. tens of thousands of russian nationals are going to be affected by this move and certainly the economy will be affected as well petro poroshenko says the main reason is to stop russian forces from being gauging private companies to send men in here effectively to form private armies and he says this is what happened back in twenty fourteen
9:18 pm
after the ukrainian uprising when pro russian schools so much trouble here in the hockey even of the places trying to force resistance against the new rule of ukraine now he says that this move will affect all men young men sixteen years of age right up until sixty years of age here in hockey it's going to have a big effect there is a thirty percent russian ethnic parts of the population and many families will be affected to the to ing and fro ing across the border just to give you an example on thursday seven hundred people cross the border coming in and coming out that seven hundred in total are men women and children however but the situation here is one where people are quite concerned because of russia had responded by doing the same thing and bombing ukrainian national have a massive effect on so many people who are unemployed or very very low wages going
9:19 pm
into russia to find work so russia played a small cold by not responding italy's foreign minister has summoned the egyptian ambassador to demand justice for those behind the murder of italian student julio we're getting this comes after prosecutors in rome announced plans to investigate members of egypt's secret service as suspects and his murder the cambridge graduate student disappeared in january two thousand and sixteen his body was found the next month with signs of torture and the desert outside of cairo. south african court has rejected a legal challenge to president post as proposed land reforms application was made by a group representing white farmers who are against the government's plans expropriating land without compensation i mean a miller reports. minority rights group after four of approached the courts to set aside a report that recommended that parliament amend the constitution to allow for land

expropriation of land without compensation zimbabwe's economic woes only seem to be getting worse one place where he can really see how desperate things were getting is that the petrol stations hundreds of cars are queuing up for hours due to another round of fuel shortages some stations are even empty or i'm a ta so reports from harare. is the second fuel crisis in just over a month and it's not just in the capital harare it's all over the country fuel pumps are driving the slushy seeing people have been waiting in long lines for hours some say even days hoping to get fuel what happens is they hear a remount or they get word that fuel will be delivered a could be delivered on the certain day they come and they join the line many people we've spoken to say they are angry and frustrated quite frankly i can't believe we're here again as i'm sure so many people. i feel it's a it's just such a waste of time and productivity. as i'm bob wins it's super frustrating because instead of working you know hustling we are hearing something that we have become

they are living under imaginable poverty and facing life threatening nutrition their situation is really desperate we have a whole generation of children growing up in in desperate desperate situations. unicef says children and central african republic have been abandoned by the international community for too long and without urgent help they could become a lost generation brian al jazeera brain is bringing more misery to asylum seekers at the us mexico border they're part of a large group of people fleeing violence and poverty in honduras guatemala and el salvador out as castro is in tijuana and has a story. if this was the first of four days of rain expected in tijuana mexico it hadn't reached two year old nicole regus yet the water surrounded

hello again welcome back to your international weather forecast with this i do want to start over here towards the eastern part of the mediterranean while we have seen plenty of clouds and rain affecting much of the area especially for turkey now for saturday that storm system is going to be making its way to the northeast a lot of that rain as well the snow in the higher elevations is going to be pushing towards the east so for eastern turkey down here across syria into parts of iraq we are going to be seeing some very heavy rain at times and then down here towards baghdad we are going to sing temptress come down slightly but better conditions as we go towards sunday and clear for you across parts of the caspian though we're going to be seeing some rain just to the north for tehran maybe sixty degrees in back who a rainy day for you with twelve degrees there well that same area of clouds is going to be pushing across parts of saudi arabia now we could be picking up
9:29 pm
a range or two here across the border areas but as we go from saturday to sunday in those clouds could be a slight shower but we don't think it is going to be heavy at all as it makes its way across parts of the body and into parts of qatar as well for doha twenty seven degrees the un as we go towards sunday increasing clouds for abu dhabi with the temperature there of twenty eight degrees and then as we make our way down here towards on the part of africa a few clouds passing across parts of cape town as we go towards saturday but temps are there is going to be about twenty two and up towards your hemispheric at twenty eight. over one hundred years ago britain and france made a secret deal to divide the middle east between them now we can draw them in the second episode we explore the lasting effects of this agreement that there's a original set to six because it's at those borders were drawn without consulting the people who have to live with it. sykes people lines in the sand on elm

9:31 pm
watching al-jazeera let's recap the top stories for you now the g. twenty summit is underway for the first time now in latin america but instead of economy issues like tensions between russia and ukraine this trade war with china and saudi journalist is murder those things are taking center stage the leaders of canada mexico and the united states formally signed in new york marathon trade deal at the g. twenty summit. spending more than a year pressuring canada mexico into the original nafta after repeatedly calling it a job killer for u.s. workers ukraine is blocking russian men of military age from entering the country following moscow's seizure of three ukrainian ships in the black sea on sunday president petro poroshenko says the ban will help to stop the formation of what he describes as private armies go back to argentina now for more on our top story the g. twenty summit we have some live pictures from venice ariz where there are demonstrators
9:32 pm
that have gathered this happens pretty much every time the g twenty get together there protesting a barrios thing. the world's richest economies are but america will see a new man is there so set the scene for us. whatever show i'm on one of the side of his main thoroughfares where there are several thousand demonstrators most of them from left wing groups left wing parties as well gathered here on this avenue are about to take off towards the national congress they are representing a whole a ray of complaints from the classic criticisms of capitalism they say they're against imperialism one of the main targets is the i.m.f. christine lagarde who is the director of the i.m.f. is here and that is because argentina has or seem to fifty six billion dollar bailout loan from that organize ation which comes of course with demand for even
9:33 pm
more stringent belt tightening in argentina which is in recession people say here this is just a deal of monks rich countries they're also criticizing donald trump he has a favorite target and this here for probably the first time of course we have the saudi crown prince is the eye of the storm people here are denouncing the war in yemen and what they called the brutal assassination of. the mayor the on these demonstrators i'd like our cameraman to show them a little bit more they are most of them young people but a few that few are congressman as well but curiously missing are the main trade unions that are loyal to former president cristina kitchener of the peronist party and that's because christina of the former populist president was the one who actually invited the g. twenty leaders to use when a site is as the location for this for this gathering so they're going to be marching over there there's a lot of security all around this area you can't see it right now but there are
9:34 pm
some fears that there could be clashes with riot police further on as they get closer and closer to the congress building richelle all right c.n.n. live for us in france ours thank you. as british prime minister theresa may struggles to sell her bracks a plan there is growing evidence that those who voted to leave the e.u. are changing their minds and that is leading to growing support for another referendum lawrence lee reports from swansea in south wales. when wales voted in favor of leaving the european union it was seen as a protest vote against the british parliament but as an act of revenge it has backfired already a shiver went through south wales when this german car parts company recently announced it was moving to the constant because of bricks it it will cost five hundred british jobs the workers are exactly the demographic which voted leave it seems many are now having second thoughts you get
9:35 pm
a feeling that people are. thinking about it more know that before the referendum is the truth i don't think they realize the implications and they currently see in the mess that we're in at the moment trying to deal with the negotiations on the withdrawal agreement. on a totally i would say i think yes people are in second thoughts. the prime minister visited wales this week when she took office she talked about it being an opportunity to build a new economy that works for everyone somewhere that message got lost bits of south wales are among the poorest parts of the whole of the european union and when people here voted leave many said they expected the british government to step in and offer the same sort of financial support to them that the e.u. had previously done not only has that not happened it hasn't played any part at all in the debate about what post bracks it britain should look like. small as he had pinned its hopes on a hugely ambitious billion dollars scheme for

a vast renewable energy projects in the bay it could have been a perfect example of a new economy for a poor part of the country but the government blocked it saying it didn't offer value for money local business groups say they've been offered no design no blueprint for how it will benefit them i think it's clear that their government in london very little intention of continuing the levels of investment that we've seen from. in this region or any other region around the way down here. in southwest wales we found a long way from a long way from priorities the sense of bricks it betraying the people who voted for it is leaving supposed suggesting that wales and other places like it's a changing them millions to sue wants another referendum on delighted if there's one thing we've learned over the last two years is that the european union are going to bend at the knees for the wishes of the british i think people are not being led down the garden path they have a right to express their view if this place can to the right thing.
