in sweden last week representatives from the who the movement and the saudi u.a.e. backed government the president. agreed not only to pull back fighters but also to establish humanitarian corridors and to allow for the deployment of you in supervised neutral forces for now many yemenis hope that this truce will hold no matter how tenuous the situation on the ground remains. standing by for us at the united nations and despite that fragile cease fire holding somewhat james you've seen a draft u.n. security council resolution on yemen what does it say. well the idea is that u.n. security council should take that ceasefire and the agreements in stockholm and in dorset and then it'll be harder for people to break it if it's indorsed in a security council resolution it's the u.k.
8:04 pm
they've come up with this draft of a resolution it's been circulated to all of the fifteen members of the security council clearly they may well have input on this and there may be changes but there's a say it endorses what was agreed in stockholm it endorsers the timelines of the cease fire and is very clear that everyone needs to abide by those it also calls for more information from the secretary general of the united nations about the redeployment of forces about the monitoring mechanism that he's going to put in place now i can tell you parallel to them doing the negotiations about the resolution which they hope to pass by the end of the week the secretary general is coming up with his plans for the monitoring of the ceasefire because in many ways what happened in stockholm is the talks went much further and much quicker than anyone expected and so they are i think trying to catch up with this monitoring plan i can tell you that the very first members of the monitoring mission the

assessment team a small team will be arriving in yemen in the next twenty four hours to look at the situation on the ground and based on what they find on the ground they will then work out how many monitors need it and then they have to recruit those monitors from various countries around the world they have to volunteer to come forward and then of course the un will deploy them very high risk thing for the un to do the nearest comparison we have is back in twenty twelve in syria when kofi annan the former secretary general was the special envoy for the united nations there were monitors sent into syria to monitor the situation on the ground that is the nearest comparison with what's planned here it's not a comparison that the u.n. and particularly making because that mission in syria was a complete failure. and we know james that the u.n. is also preparing for talks on a wider truce than a framework for political negotiations those are supposed to take place in january
8:06 pm
is the feeling amongst the u.n. security council members that if the cease fire and what they that are currently underway does not hold then that may and the process in january i think they really are hoping that this will hold for two reasons one to create some goodwill and some momentum and two for nonpolitical reasons humanitarian reasons who data has been declared to be the lifeline of yemen it is the main port without it the humanitarian situation which is already the worst anywhere on earth could get even worse and we're talking about words that the u.n. has mentioned like imminent catastrophe imminent famine so i think with that in mind they really do need this to hold but as you say one of the benefits of that is that the next round of talks could then take place in january i'm told not in sweden somewhere else next time around that has not been announced but the next
8:07 pm
round is going to be much harder because they're not just trying to deal with the flash points on the ground they're trying to deal with a lasting political settlement for yemen again something that's referred to in this draft resolution that they've got to come up with a lasting solution but that is going to be difficult particularly because the who thiis control a very significant part of yemen including the capital and they're going to want some concessions made if the going to give that up all right james bays thank you. now the former u.s. national security advisor michael flynn is about to be sentenced as part of an investigation into the alleged russian collusion during the twenty sixteen presidential election the retired general pleaded guilty a year ago over lying to the f.b.i. prosecutors are asking for probation and community service instead of prison u.s. president donald trump denies any collusion with russia to secure his presidency

and has called the miller probe a witch hunt shihab rattansi is joining us from washington d.c. where that sentencing is due to take place well what are you hearing about what's going on in the courtroom. this is way more heated and dramatic than you might have expected we knew that the special counsel had recommended that flynn negligible jail time perhaps none at all because of his extensive cooperation with the special counsel's prosecution but the judge is very very angry disdainful off michael flynn's crimes and it would appear his conduct since he reached a plea agreement with robert muller the lawyers for michael flynn in recent weeks suggested that it was entrapped in some way to do pleading to pleading guilty for his original crime because when he had his initial interview with the f.b.i. investigators in the white house they hadn't explained to him what they were up to you hadn't explained to him the gravity of lying to investigators at the time so
8:09 pm
the judge seems rather annoyed by this and was suggesting well wait you say you were entrapped so are you actually pleading guilty or are you suggesting you were entrapped to this when the back and forth for some time michael flynn admitted that he would least affirm that he did plead guilty that he did not feel he was entrapped then the sentencing hearing began in earnest and that's really where everything began and the judge being very very derisory very it's just not hiding his anger at slim for what he said was effectively selling out the country being the national security adviser. united states but being a registered foreign agent lying to investigators in the white house know that he's very angry by that and he said that he's not going to guarantee flynn won't face costs aeration of some sort and now they recessed for the well they'll be back in court in about twenty minutes time is another opportunity to flip to talk to his lawyers but things are very very dramatic right now in court to have been dramatic in the last hour or so in the court and interestingly. just
8:10 pm
a short while ago tweeting that he wishes flynn good luck at his sentencing. yeah and that's interesting for on several levels unlike some of trump's other associates michael cohen his former lawyer and comes to mind trump has always been very very complementary about michael flynn even though flynn has reached a plea agreement with robert mueller flipped very early on and robot mode is going to be said he's been very helpful in several in several investigations trump apparently not too bothered but by that so that's interesting but this isn't a breeze for michael flynn as some might have thought because of all the the cooperation he's been giving the special counsel so now we're all in suspense sort of see what happens next in twenty minutes when the court convenes once again whether whether the judge is going to accept the sentencing recommendation of guidelines from the special counsel between zero to six months but but but at the low end of zero to six months which could mean no jail time at all but the judge doesn't seem to be terribly happy right now all right you have a chance he will speak to a little later thank you the key power brokers of the syrian war say they will work

towards convening a committee to negotiate a new constitution in syria next year the foreign ministers of russia iran and turkey met to discuss the plan in geneva on tuesday but they went for syria war and there is still some way to go to ensure a credible commission is established reports. the best of the foreign ministers of turkey russia and iran could come up with was a commitment to agree to take efforts aimed at convening the first session of the syrian constitutional committee here in geneva early next year but there is still no indication on exactly who the hundred fifty members of that constitutional committee are going to be because at this meeting these three countries overlooked by the u.n. special envoy stephan to restore it when i were unable to agree on the final fifteen members of the committee there are fifty from the syrian regime fifty from opposition groups but this other fifty there's a been a lot of haggling on who should be on this committee and who shouldn't be on this

committee and they clearly haven't been able to agree the final names it was perhaps particularly for straightening for staff and in this story because as he spoke to the press here this evening this was his last statement to the press who report to the u.n. secretary general but he's leaving the post and handing over to a norwegian in the new year these conflicts never ended with a wonderful peace or death treaty and a conference and everybody embraced of each other it is actually a process that may go on and on until all death and hopefully in the best way for develop people the two constants in this conflict over differ a lot for year one there is never been a constant moment of anything there being constant shifts of what they're being the military events and the facts on the ground and a political position just look where we were four years ago and where we are today

second constant there with always being the syrian people suffering. well the u.s. special envoy for syria jim jeffrey has confirmed the deployment of kurdish fighters from northern iraq into northern syria the unexpected move came after turkey threatened further military action in mendez if u.s. backed kurdish fighters don't leave the area zana to reports from istanbul. turkish military reinforcements have already been sent to the border with syria president to measure up to you border guard says a cross border operation against what he calls terrorists can begin at any moment the target is the u.s. backed syrian democratic forces the s.d.f. is mainly made up of the y.p. g. or kurdish peoples protection units it won't be the first time the turkish military has confronted the kurdish armed group on syrian soil but if this offensive does happen it will be the first time turkish troops are targeting the group east of the
